- The connections between Zelgius and Siegfried Schtauffen are gruff and blunt, yet well-spoken swordsmen who are extremely no-nonsense and take pride in their swordsmanship. They both wield incredibly large and iconic divine blades blessed by deities as if it were nothing (Zelgius wields Alondite, which was blessed by Ashera and Siegfried wields Soul Calibur, which was blessed by Elysium). They were mentored in swordsmanship by an experienced knight very close to them, who they eventually fight and slay (Zelgius’s mentor is Sir Gawain the “Divine Knight,” now known as Greil, who he sought to surpass so much that he challenged and subsequently slayed him in battle, and Siegfried’s mentor is Sir Frederick Schtauffen the “Gentle Knight,” his father, who he met on the battlefield and accidentally slayed in battle). They both have an alter ego as an anonymous knight named after the colour of their armour and known for being unstoppable in combat, with an unknown identity (Zelgius has an alternate persona known as the Black Knight and Siegfried has an alternate persona known as Nightmare, the Azure Knight). Eventually, they would inspire the next hero in-line to rise up and defeat the evil that plagues their land, being their strongest and final mentor who passed along their blade to them (Zelgius incurs Ike’s quest after slaying Greil in front of him, but later following their final duel, Ike notes that Zelgius has become his final mentor, and is entrusted with Alondite, and Siegfried directly mentored Z.W.E.I and entrusted the Soul Calibur to him).
