Yang Xiao Long VS Winter Soldier is a What-If? Death Battle by DBDoctor13. It sees Yang Xiao Long from the Rooster Teeth Web Series RWBY fighting against The Winter Soldier from Marvel Comics.

Both of them were normal kids who fought evil on a daily basis. Then a life-changing event happened which left lasting scars to their bodies both figurative and literal. They recovered with equipment that made them stronger and now, at last, the two will meet. Will the Winter Soldier assassinate the Hot-Headed member of Team RWBY? Or will Bucky go out with a Yang?
INTRODUCTION[]

Wiz: It helps to have a robotic arm ready in the event that you ever lose your normal one. Especially if you’ve been through absolute hell and then something worse happens that leaves you with mental and physical scarring.
Boomstick: Bucky Barnes; the former sidekick to Captain America-turned KGB Agent known as The Winter Soldier.
Wiz: And Yang Xiao Long; the former student at Beacon Academy-turned-Huntress with one powerful arm from Team RWBY.
Boomstick: He’s Wiz, and I’m Boomstick!
Wiz: And it’s our job to analyze their armor, weapons, and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle!
WINTER SOLDIER[]
(Music: Return of the Heroes by Terry Devine-King from Conflicts 3247)
Wiz: James Buchanan Barnes was born in 1925 to a loving family. Of course, as this is a Marvel story, his mother and father died ten years later and the ten-year-old was separated from his sister.
Boomstick: Damn. That sucks. Anyways, James remained at the Army Camp where his father died eventually becoming the camp mascot. But when World War II broke out, James traveled to England where he received combat training from British Commandos. I dunno why he didn’t just ask the people at the combat camp, but hey; that’s just me being smart.
Wiz: When James returned from training, he was partnered with a US Government Operative named Steve Rogers. The two struck up a kind friendship but Rogers barely seemed to be around. One night, James discovered the truth.
Boomstick: Steve Rogers was Captain America! ZOMG!
Wiz: With that, the super-soldier took the 16-Year-Old under his wing and made him his sidekick; Bucky.
Boomstick: Together, Cap and Bucky waged a war against Adolf Hitler, the Nazis, and a sub-Nazi group called Hydra. They were joined by colorful allies such as The Howling Commandos, Namor the Sub-Mariner, and The Human Torch. But Cap and Bucky always enjoyed kicking some Nazi ass. Like that time they literally stuffed Hitler into a garbage bin and prevented him from killing a hostage. *Sigh* It must’ve been nice to have an older brother like Cap.
Wiz: But in late 1945, Captain America and Bucky were sent to London to stop Nazi scientist Baron Heinrich Zemo from deploying an experimental plane with weapons that could kill countless individuals. The two were forced to try and ground the plane themselves, but something tragic happened…
(CAPTAIN AMERICA [Seeing a bomb in the plane]: There’s not enough time! BUCKY; JUMP FOR IT!!! [Bucky is revealed to have gotten caught in the ladder leading to the cockpit.] BUCKY: I CAN’T!!! CAP!!! CAPTAIN AMERICA: Hold on, Bucky! [Cap drops down and tries to help Bucky get freed from the ladder.] BUCKY: I’m sorry, Cap! CAPTAIN AMERICA: Stow that talk! We’ll make it! BUCKY: No. I’m sorry. But the world needs Captain America more than Bucky! [Bucky kicks Steve causing him to fall. Steve looks horrified as he sees Bucky waving and smiling assumingly.] CAPTAIN AMERICA: NO! NO!!! BUCKY!!!! [The ship explodes, with the shockwave sending Steve into the freezing water.])
Boomstick: And that’s the story of how Bucky Barnes died. (Pause) Nah, just kidding.

Wiz: While Steve Rogers was frozen and left to be discovered decades later, Bucky’s remains were eventually discovered by the Russians who were hoping to revive the Sentinel of Liberty for their own needs. Despite them only finding Bucky, the Soviets decided that if they couldn’t have Captain America, they’d use Bucky instead.
Boomstick: So Bucky was given a robotic arm and then given a complete brainwashing to make him their personal agent. Thus was born one of the coolest assassins (pun-intended) in comics history; The Winter Soldier.
([Steve is seen throwing his shield at the escaping Winter Soldier. However, the assassin catches it without even looking back. Once he’s caught it, he pauses to glare at the Super Soldier].)
Wiz: The Winter Soldier is a powerful enemy. Despite being in his early twenties at the time of his death, he has managed to remain young since the KGB were smart enough to put him into cryogenic sleep after each assignment. Thus, keeping him in peak human conditioning.
Boosmtick: Basically, it’s like Jason Bourne if instead of getting his mind wiped, he repeatedly got put into carbonite. Minus the sight problem. Anyways, The Winter Soldier has ranked up plenty of impressive kills over the years from NATO Generals, to British Ambassadors, S.H.I.E.L.D.’s first L.M.D. and even the head of M16! He even killed Wolverine’s wife!
Wiz: Thanks to his training under Captain America, the U.S. Military, and the KGB, The Winter Soldier is a master martial artist, expert marksman, skilled acrobat, master in multiple languages, expert assassin, and a professional when it comes to spying.

Boomstick: He’s strong enough to toss a man over his head with one arm, crack a wall with one punch, and when he was a teenager he managed to uppercut a guy so hard, it sent him flying!
Wiz: He’s survived getting punched through concrete walls, got hit with a grenade launcher resulting in only some damaged ribs, and even withstood a beating from Doctor Doom himself.
Boomstick: What kind of drugs was this kid taking?!
Wiz: Well, unlike Captain America, Bucky never received the Super Soldier Serum. Instead, he has a really high-pain tolerance due to the pain he’s been inflicted with over the years. However, after Bucky lost his right arm, the Russians replaced it with a cybernetic arm that is strong enough to punch through human flesh, a giant robot, or even break through metal chains! It’s also bullet-proof, knife-proof, and fire-proof as well! The arm can even be detached and fight on its own if Bucky should need it!
Boomstick: Wait! Wait! Wait! Go back a second! Is he fighting a Nazi Zombie?! South Park was right after all! Quick, Wiz! We need to mount an assault on every Taco Bell!
Wiz: The arm also has some defenses which can electrocute a person, and even emit an EMP Device! But this is not the only arsenal at The Winter Soldier’s disposal.
Boomstick: Ah, my favorite part. The Winter Soldier’s arsenal includes a gas grenade, a device that shuts down lasers, holograms, smoke grenades, explosive rounds, combat knives, hand guns, sniper rifles, and an explosive that can take out a space-ship!
Wiz: Taking the length and width of the explosion, this bomb must have yielded 808.1 Pounds of TNT!

Boomstick: That’s insane! But then again, even without all those gadgets, Bucky has done some pretty insane things! He’s withstood getting electrocuted, survived falling through some trees from a lengthy height, and a beating from Master Man who can lift dozens of tons! He even hid some plastic explosives in his arm and tore them out just to escape a prison!
Wiz: He’s dodged lightning which can move around 98,000 miles per-second! Bucky has also dodged bullets from machine-guns and guns at point-blank range. He’s dodged the villain Unicorn’s laser eye which assuming it moves around the same speed as real lasers, can fire at a speed of 186,000 feet per-second! He can even dodge bullets while underwater in the Marianas Trench, and dodged fast enough to avoid a Kree Weapon that could one-shot Cap! He even bested The Black Widow in combat which is actually no surprise considering during his KGB Days, The Winter Soldier was her personal instructor.
Boomstick: They even fell in love eventually and enjoyed putting each other’s guns in their hilts.
Wiz: I hate you. Well, Bucky eventually regained his memories after Steve used the cosmic cube to undo the KGB’s brainwashing. Though he took a long road to recover from all his sins, Bucky has more than made up for it. He’s taken out multiple A.I.M. Soldiers while restrained, killed a train full of HYDRA Agents, and even held his own against Daredevil, Wolverine, and Hawkeye at the same time!
Boomstick: He’s followed Wolverine without being noticed, reacted faster than a sniper shot, and saved the world from multiple takeovers. Hell, he was so good that he succeeded Steve Rogers as Captain America for quite a while, until events forced him to fake his death and become The Winter Soldier once more.
Wiz: But The Winter Soldier is not perfect. Despite his accomplishments, he is still a mortal man and can be put down just as easily. Plus, while he has been earning redemption for what he did, he still feels guilt over all his actions. Also, his bionic arm can be put down by an EMP, leaving it useless.
Boomstick: But with decades of experience under his belt, The Winter Soldier has proved himself to be one of the deadliest characters in comic book history. If you see this man having broken into your home, you’d better not have done anything wrong because he will violently murder you.
([The Winter Soldier’s mask has been knocked off. He turns around revealing himself to be Bucky Barnes.] STEVE: Bucky?! THE WINTER SOLDIER [Confused]: Who the hell is “Bucky”?)
YANG XIAO LONG[]

Wiz: Yang Xiao Long was the daughter of two of the greatest hunters in Remnant. After she lost her mother under mysterious circumstances, Yang was trained by her Uncle Qrow to become the best huntress. After years of training, Yang would eventually be accepted into Beacon Academy alongside her younger half-sister, Ruby Rose. It was there alongside two other friends that they would become Team RWBY.

Boomstick: And all these years later after we saw her fighting Tifa Lockhart, that shit’s still confusing. Anyways, Yang enjoyed life training at Beacon where she continued to hone her skills and learns entirely new ways of beating the ever-loving-shit out of monsters and other people, while getting into typical high-school-style hijinks.
(YANG: I always start my semesters off with a Yang. Am I right? [An apple is tossed at her face. Sun and Neptune enter the cafeteria where they see the food fight going down. Yang is shown using the Turkeys around her Ember Celica.])
Wiz: Unfortunately, the good times didn’t last very long. During the Beacon Vytal Festival, the school was attacked by a horde of Grimm, White Fang, and loyal followers to the witch known as Salem. While Yang attempted to help teammate Blake Belladonna, the fight would change her life forever.
([Yang is seen charging at Adam Taurus with tears in her eyes. Adam swiftly draws his sword with precision timing. As Yang flies through the air, the lower half of her right arm separates from her body. She lands on the floor violently with golden aura spurting from her wound.])

Wiz: But Yang lost more than just her arm that day. The events of loosing Beacon coupled with the disappearance of two teammates broke her psychologically.
Boomstick: Basically, she got Bane’d. But with some help and encouragement from her father, Yang found the strength to pick herself back up while getting a brand new prosthetic arm!

Wiz: Yang’s prosthetic arm is a device that was specifically made for her bravery during the Battle of Beacon. It appears to be similar in strength, dexterity, and overall similar functions to her former arm. It also contains a retractable gun and can be removed by Yang if she wishes.
Boomstick: Best of all, she can fire it like a rocket and with the strength it was given by Atlas Scientists, it makes Adam’s Semblance Yang’s bitch. But this chick doesn’t just rely on her arm. She wields her Ember Celica; two shotgun bracelets that Yang uses to punch and shoot people at the same time!
Wiz: Each gauntlet can fire twelve shells and Yang can also use the recoil to boost her striking power and mobility. Each of these shells are also powered by Dust which is a special resource that has varying effects. Yang has two kinds that she uses. Orange and red.
Boomstick: The orange shells are used for close-range combat. Yang will often use these to maximize the impact of her strikes in close combat.

Wiz: The red shells can be fired for a ranged projectile that explode upon impact. Based on one image when calculating the size of the explosion, we found that the explosive force of her Red shells must be equal to 580563.4 pounds of TNT! In addition, Yang has her own aura which is the manifestation of one’s soul. With this, Yang can defend her body for a limited amount of time. Once gone, she is open to attacks from an opponent.
Boomstick: But they’ll be in for a surprise that will blow them away, literally. Because Yang has what’s known as a semblance which is her own super-power. Using her semblance, Yang can absorb energy from her attackers and redirect it right back at them!
Wiz: However, it does not enhance Yang’s own durability and she will take full damage from the attacks. But even without her abilities, Yang is an accomplished Huntress. Despite never fully finishing her education at Beacon, Yang is able to take down multiple foes at once. In some circumstances, she’s even taken out several foes with one explosive round.

Boomstick: She one toppled a giant robotic elephant’s legs which was so big that one of her classmates had to crane his neck to see the full size. While this feat was in the written form, Yang has been seen to take down giant mechs on occasions. We previously showed how Yang was able to take down this ED-209-knock off after getting hit twice. She took that thing down with one punch!
Wiz: Taking into account the size of the Paladin Prototype and the user, Roman Torchwick, in order to destroy a machine of that size, Yang would need to hit with a punch that generated a force greater than 11246953.8 pounds of TNT!
Boomstick: Yang’s punched an Ursa Minor through several trees, held the beak of a giant Nevemore open (while firing shots into its mouth), punched someone through a steel door, and by launching her robotic hand, sent Nora Valkyrie flying backwards!
Wiz: She survived fighting Beowolves for an entire day, survived being launched 10,000 feet into the air and falling back onto the ground, and punched the ground hard enough to create a shockwave!
Boomstick: She can channel her inner Wonder Woman by blocking bullets with her arm, tanked multiple explosions that just pissed her off something fierce, and survived getting bitten by an Ursa Minor!
Wiz: Assuming the bite is equal to the normal bite of a Grizzly Bear, Yang survived being bitten with a pressure force of over 1,200 lbs!
Boomstick: And despite loosing her arm to Adam, Yang is also quick enough to dodge all manners of bullets, rockets, and other fast monsters! Hell, Yang is even skilled enough to hear a gun click from a distance away!
Wiz: But Yang is not perfect. She’s often hot-headed and does still carry the burden of loosing her arm. Also, her aura is limited as previously mentioned, and she can run out of ammo. Despite all of this, none of these factors have ever stopped Yang Xiao Long from doing what she can to defend the world alongside her friends. She eventually even managed to take out Adam with help from Blake when they squared off again.
Boomstick: I’ve seen a lot of powerful women in my life, and this is one chick I do NOT want to mess with!
(YANG [As she shoots into the Nevermore’s Mouth]: I! HOPE! YOU’RE! HUNG-! …-GRY!)
DEATH BATTLE![]
Wiz: Alright, the combatants are set. Let’s end this debate once and for all.
Boomstick: It’s time for a DEATH BATTTTLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
PRE-FIGHT[]
(Music: Burning Soldier- Brandon Yates featuring Jeff Williams and Casey Lee Williams)
We open on an establishing shot of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier. We then cut inside as we see the Black Widow walking up a series of metal steps in what appears to be the Engine Room. She comes to a small ledge which features a small window that shows the cloudy landscape. Watching the sight outside is The Winter Soldier.
BLACK WIDOW: James.
The former partner of Captain America turns around giving the smallest hint of a smile and a cocked eyebrow.
WINTER SOLDIER: Nat.
Natasha hands the Winter Soldier a small cylinder. James activates it and it projects a hologram of Yang Xiao Long.
BLACK WIDOW: This is your latest target. Yang Xiao Long. We don’t have much about her history except that she is currently on the move. S.H.I.E.L.D. needs more info about the special bracelet weapons and that prosthetic arm of hers. Bring the fight to her on your own.
The Winter Soldier frowns.
WINTER SOLDIER: That is not a wise strategy.
BLACK WIDOW: Well, in Russia we have an old saying; Если вы казак, не позволяйте себе быть известным.*
(*Translation from Russian: If you’re a Cossack, don’t let yourself be known.)
WINTER SOLDIER (Bluntly): I’ll get the job done.
He prepares to leave but stops to give Natasha a serious look.
WINTER SOLDIER: И я не дурак.*
(*Translation from Russian: And I am not a fool.)
The former Captain America leaves. We cut to Mistral as Yang is seen riding Bumblebee trough a forest. Unbeknownst to her, The Winter Soldier is waiting nearby crouching silently in the trees, his face now masked. We then see that Yang is heading for a trip wire. As the Winter Soldier readies his sniper, Yang suddenly stops. Seconds before hitting the tripwire, she comes to a halt just in time before hitting the trap. However, it appears the former KGB Agent was counting on this as he fires. The former Beacon Student dodges the attack and fires off an explosive red shell knocking the tree to the ground. The Winter Soldier manages to roll out and onto the ground. Yang takes a defensive stance as The Winter Soldier readies himself.
YANG: Nice aim. So who’re you supposed to be?
The Winter Soldier remains silent until he charges at her and Yang charges at him.
FIGHT[]
The two lock fists with each other’s metal appendages. The two scared soldiers struggle as Yang kicks and the WWII Survivor’s side, and then spins him around. As a result, James looses his jacket revealing his robotic arm.
YANG (Surprised): You have a metal arm?! Dude, that’s so cool! Where’d you get it?!
James responds by striking Yang in her side. Yang’s semblance protects her. She responds with a knee to The Winter Soldier’s groin which does hurt him, but Yang finds herself wincing slightly in pain.
YANG (Groaning): Agh! What’ve you got under there?!
Bucky takes out a gun and aims it at her. Yang gasps and begins dodging the bullets. The Winter Soldier then tosses an EMP Device at her and it activates. Suddenly, Yang’s arm shuts down and goes limp.
YANG (Confused and Worried): What?!
Winter Soldier responds with a punch across her face. Yang regains balance and manages to block the following blows from the Soldier. Eventually, The Soldier throws a strong right hook. Yang Dodges and strikes him in the chest. Unfortunately the former KGB Agent had been counting on this and he pulls out his knife, stabbing Yang in the chest. Yang screams in pain from being stabbed at such close range.
WINTER SOLDIER: They said you were tough.
The Winter Soldier then Sparta Kicks her in the chest pulling the blade out. He puts the knife back in its holster.
WINTER SOLDIER: But I’m guessing you lost an arm too at some point. That’s fine.
The Winter Soldier does a spin-kick, hitting Yang right in the face as she goes flying back. It’s revealed that James planned his attacks as Yang falls on the tripwire. The result creates an explosion that engulfs the entire area between the trees.
WINTER SOLDIER: I’ll be sure to give you a proper burial. It’s the least I can do.
The Winter Soldier walks over to collect the body but is then suddenly punched in the stomach. The punch also gives an explosion that sends him flying backwards and into a tree, leaving an impact on there. He groans and staggers back up revealing that a branch pierced his abdomen. The Winter Soldier grits his teeth as he pulls the branch out. Now confused, he scans the fire only to see Yang charging at him.
WINTER SOLDIER: What the-?!
The Winter Soldier doesn’t have time to respond as Yang hits him with a barrage of blows and explosions. His cloths begin to burn and his face is slightly scarred by a result of Yang’s attacks. The former Beacon student doesn’t give him a second to breathe. However, she does fail to notice James pulling out a handgun. He fires it into Yang as her eyes go wide and she slowly falls to the ground. As she does, her aura fades having been deactivated. The Winter Soldier picks her up by the throat and slams her into a nearby tree, causing the tree to fall upon impact. He then releases his arm and lets it electrocute her. Yang screams in pain, but focuses hard. She raises her robotic arm and shoots it right at The Winter Soldier. However, he manages to catch it similar to how he caught Captain America’s shield in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
WINTER SOLDIER: You really thought I was going to fall for that?
YANG (Struggling): No… THIS!
The former Captain America looks at the arm which now has the retractable gun out. It shoots him in the face as he cries in pain. Meanwhile, Yang’s semblance activates. Her hair glows and her eyes go red. With one hand, she effortlessly rips The Winter Soldier’s Mechanical Arm off of her neck and then slams it into the ground hard enough to break it. Yang zips back to her opponent and slips her mechanical arm back into place. She then delivers a series of blows to The Winter Soldier faster than he can react to. Eventually, The Winter Soldier is dazed which allows Yang to reload. She charges up hard and delivers one final almighty punch to his stomach. The resulting explosion leaves a giant hole in The Winter Soldier’s chest, while the rest of his body parts fly off him. The remains of The Winter Soldier fall to the ground dead. Yang smiles and walks off. She pauses looking back at him.
YANG: You really didn't need to fall to pieces on me like that.
There is no response from the dead body.
YANG: Out with a Yang!
With that, she walks back over to Bumblebee and drives off.
K.O.[]
ANNOUNCER: K.O.!
RESULTS[]
Boomstick: And now Bucky knows what it’s like to be me. Living with that hole in your chest after a messy divorce. Also, screw you, Yang. You stole my pun!
Wiz: To be fair, The Winter Soldier had superior running speed and years of formal combat training under his belt. Unfortunately, he did not count on Yang’s semblance and her own technology. Not to mention that whilst Yang is reckless, she has learned to incorporate some strategy into her fights when put in difficult situations.
Boomstick: Yeah, he may have grown out of the tights, but Bucky still makes the same dumb teenage sidekick mistakes. Like the time when he was still brainwashed and hesitated for a brief second which allowed Captain America to get the better of him and restore his memories.
Wiz: While Winter Soldier’s laser-dodging skills were impressive, he could not block bullets the same way Yang had. Even then, Yang’s strength put her far above the former KGB Agent. Although Winter Soldier could deactivate her arm and control his while detached from his body, Yang has proven she can fight just as well if not better even without her arm.
Boomstick: Even without his own arm, the Winter Soldier has still managed to get his ass handed to him on numerous occasions. Not to mention that while surviving the drop into the trees was impressive, Yang survived being launched 10,000 feet into the air and came back down with no problem or harm done. Even James needed a second to recover after falling on his tailbone. Believe me, that shit hurts! Not to mention that when Bucky survived a lot of these explosions, he had Captain America's shield with him. Because he's no longer The Star Spangled Man with a Plan, that meant we couldn't let him have his shield for the fight.
Wiz: The Winter Soldier may have been a hardened combatant, but he could not stand up to the Huntress’ craftiness, greater strength, and superb durability.
Boomstick: Looks like Bucky went out with a Yang. Now there’s a HOLE new position open for his empty space now!
Wiz: The Winner is Yang Xiao Long.
TRIVIA[]
The similarities between Yang and Winter Soldier is that they were both part of a team of heroes (Yang with Team RWBY and Bucky with The Invaders) before a traumatic experience crippled them until they were given cybernetic reattachments which helped them recover after going through depression (although in Bucky's case, he had to get over his depression after Captain America used the Cosmic Cube to restore his memories and undo the brainwashing that The Soviets gave him and filled him with guilt over all he had caused.)
This fight would ideally be in 3D Animation.
The Song Title Burning Soldier is a reference to both Yang's Theme Song (Burn) and Bucky's codename of Winter Soldier. The song itself would incorporate an orchestral action piece accompanied by some synthetic beats to mimic The Winter Soldier's theme from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Towards the end, a segment of Burn can be heard.
The track album cover was done by NerdWithAKeyboard. It features an image of a combination between Yang and Bucky's mechanical arms. Initially, there was a cut between the two arms, but DBDoctor13 convinced NerdWithAKeyboard that it would make more sense for the arms to appear fused.

The Black Widow has a cameo at the beginning of the fight where she is seen giving James the mission to take Yang's equipment. The two even share a conversation in Russian.
This fight presumably takes place between RWBY Volume 4 and Volume 5 as Yang is riding Bumblebee through Mistral.
Boomstick refers to Bucky's previous identity as Cap being "The Star Spangled Man with a Plan" which is a reference to the song sung for Steve Rogers preforming at the USO Shows during the film Captain America: The First Avenger.
