Interlude[]
The episode opens with the Death Battle transition card closing before opening again to reveal Vergil dashing forwards, rapidly teleporting across the hanger as he got in close to Vader and swung Yamato in a quick-draw as Vader parried the attack with a swift swing of his Lightsaber to block Vergil’s strike, hich pauses and grays out as Ringmaster shouts…
FIGHT!
Wiz: Darth Vader, Fallen Jedi Knight turned mighty Sith Lord.
Boomstick: Vergil, the Darkslaying Elder Son of Sparda.
Wiz: Evil comes in many faces and many forms, and sometimes even the most good-natured of souls can find themselves being manipulated and tortured into becoming the unwitting pawn of pure evil.
Boomstick: He’s Wiz and I’m Boomstick!
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.
Darth Vader Strikes Back against DEATH BATTLE![]
Wiz: A long time ago, in a Galaxy far, far away, lived a young boy on the desert planet of Tatooine who longed for a life free from the sandy dunes, to travel the stars and right the wrongs of the galaxy. That young boy would one day go on to become the most dangerous man the Galaxy ever knew. His name was Anakin Skywalker.
Boomstick: Anakin and his mom grew up slaves for the sleazy salesman Watto, but it was clear Anakin was no ordinary kid. Even at ten years old he was able to compete in Pod-Races, something no normal human could ever do compared to the wacky aliens in the galaxy, and this would be confirmed on the day when Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, who just so happened to crash on Tatooine with the Queen of another planet fleeing the evil Trade Federation.
Wiz: Seeking the parts to repair their ship, Qui-Gon took a keen interest in Young Anakin, recognizing that he had the potential to become a Jedi himself, and could possibly even be the Chosen One destined to bring balance to the Force. Betting on and winning Anakin’s freedom, Qui-Gon intended to become both the teacher and father-figure Anakin both desired and needed.
Boomstick: But alas, tragedy struck with Sith Satan himself Darth Maul appeared and killed Qui-Gon, leaving Anakin’s training in the hands of Qui-Gon’s apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. And with that, Anakin’s journey to becoming a Jedi began, and he skyrocketed through the ranks faster than any Jedi before him. In just ten short years, Anakin already excelled as a Master in Lightsaber combat, which was only highlighted further by his time serving as a general in a Galactic Civil War.
Wiz: In particular, Anakin studied in the Fifth Form of Lightsaber Combat, which itself is made up of two practices, Shien and Diem So, and can best be summarized by the saying “The best offense is a good defense.” While it is not an agile form, Form V excels in winning duels through sheer overwhelming pressure via redirecting blocked attacks to create openings for devastating parries and counter attacks, while still allowing for a fully-brunted offensive. The Shien variant focuses on countering ranged blaster fire, and the Diem So variant focuses on countering Lightsabers, so by mastering both, Anakin could prepare for any scenario.
Boomstick: But if Anakin was a Master of Lightsaber combat, his raw power in manipulating the Force was something else entirely! As old Obi-Wan once said; It's an energy field created by all living things, basically meaning it’s omnipresent and exists everywhere, and with is, Jedi like Anakin can use abilities like Telekinesis and Telepathy, Mind Reading, Mind Tricking, and so much more.
Wiz: One of Anakin’s most powerful abilities was his use of Precognition, glimpsing into the future to see what may come to pass. While this could be used as an ability in battle, Anakin more often used it while he was asleep, receiving dreams of the future that haunted him like nightmares, the first one being the death of his mother at the hands of Tusken Raiders. A few years later, he had a vision of his secret wife, Padme Amidala, dying in childbirth, and this time he did not intend to let it come to pass.
Boomstick: Yeeeah, see, the Jedi had a whole rule about not forging super deep attachments, lest they come to prioritize their personal loved ones over the safety of the entire galaxy, and while we can debate all day long about how right or wrong that rule was, in the end, it led to Anakin turning against the Jedi and becoming the apprentice of the Sith Master Palpatine, slaughtering thousands of them. Not just the Men, but the Women and the Children too. As a result he got to lose the epic lava-planet duel against dear old Obi-Wan that resulted in him getting FUCKING BURNED ALIVE BY LAVA! How the hell did he survive that?
Wiz: The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be...unnatural, and Anakin learned this the extreme way as his burning hatred and rage allowed him to survive off the Force alone until he could be recovered by his Master and reconstructed. Anakin Skywalker had died, and reborn in his place was Darth Vader.
Boomstick: Now that’s a classic movie villain! Man that armor is freakin sweet, and as a bonus, it’s composed of an ultra-tough metal known as Durasteel, which is one of the strongest metals in the Star War Universe. Plus it’s equipped with an on-board life-support system to continuously supply his oxygen since his lungs are literal toast, and since it’s vacuum-sealed, he can survive in space no problem.
Wiz: But the armor isn’t perfect, in fact it never was from the start. The life-support system was buggy and would go off-line randomly, the armor itself was uncomfortable and graded against his skin, sometimes the limbs just wouldn’t work. It, by all means, should not have allowed Vader to become such a deadly killer, but it did due to the nature of Sith Philosophy. Through a combination of making Vader believe he not only killed his wife, but also ensuring he would never forget the monstrous machine he had become, Vader’s anger, his pain, his hatred was all only empowered. Who cared if the limbs would stop working when he could move them with the Force. It didn’t matter if the life-support didn’t work when he could thrive off of purely the Force. It didn’t matter if someone destroyed his helmet’s lenses when the Force could guide his movements.
Boomstick: The Force really is just that crazy, and the Sith are more adept with using it’s raw-power than anyone. He once had an entire building collapse on-top of him, disabling his life-support, and still sustained himself long enough to get outta there. But Vader uses the Force for more than just self-support, he can make shields to protect himself, say “fuck everything around me” with the Force Repulse, slow you down to a crawl with Force Slow, make pseudo-Force Lighting called Kinetite, and choke the every-living shit out of every Imperial Officer who pissed him off. Hell, he could use Force Crush to lift a target into the air and slowly crush them via sheer pressure, or even telekinetically destroy your internal organs with Force Kill.
Wiz: He can tap into into all of his innermost fears, pain and hate, and convert them into an intense power-up called Force Rage, or Force Fury, to gain a mid-battle power-up over opponents, bind and control souls with Sith Alchemy, and even perceive Shatterpoint’s, which allow him to exploit flaws in everything to find and create weak-points.
Boomstick: He’s even got a Dual-Phase Lightsaber, which can do everything awesome a normal Lightsaber can, while also allowing him to manually adjust the blade to double its normal length.
Wiz: All that said, it’s no wonder that Vader went on to be the most fearsome killer in the galaxy.
Boomstick: He’s killed hundreds of thousands of Jedi over two decades, slaughtered an entire army single-handedly, and has consistently shown light-speed directions from deflecting lasers, to other lightsaber’s, and while dogfighting in his personal TIE-Advanced.
Wiz: He’s survived impaling himself, being at the center of an exploding-planet, has been stated to be stronger than weaker Nightsisters who could use Sith artifacts to move moons, and even finally beat dear-old Obi-Wan in their final duel.
Boomstick: By making sure he couldn’t high-ground it up any longer. Heck, even prior to becoming Vader, Anakin was able to hold down and restrain both The Son and The Daughter. Who are they? Only the physical embodiment of the Light and Dark sides of the Force, and Anakin overpowered and held them both down! At the same time!
Wiz: Though in the end, Vader would be faced with his greatest challenge yet; converting his secret son Luke Skywalker to the Dark Side. And yet, despite all of Vader’s trying, and despite the countless atrocities he had committed, Luke chose to believe in the goodness of his father which ultimately paid off as it allowed the goodness of Anakin to finally resurface and overthrow Palpatine as his dying act. Not only had Anakin finally saved someone he loved, he had brought balance to Force just as Qui-Gon believed he would all those years ago.
Boomstick: But that doesn’t mean Vader still isn’t the coolest villain in cinema history. Forget anyone else, if he’s coming for you, it’s too late. You’re fucked.
Vergil Bury's the Light in DEATH BATTLE![]
Wiz: Two Thousand Years ago, a great mutiny took place in the Underworld as the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda woke up to justice and betrayed the Demon kind. Successfully defeating the lord of demons Mundus, Sparda severed the connection between Hell and the Earth, as well as sealing off a large portion of his power before continuing to protect the Human world for years to come.
Boomstick: Eventually Spards vanished into legend and died, but not before meeting a woman he’d fallen in love with named Eva, and there was a brief time where they lived as a happy family along with their twin sons; Dante and Vergil.
Wiz: In many ways, the two were opposites from birth. Dante was more of an extrovert; aloof and lighthearted while Vergil was an introvert; always cold serious. Most importantly, while Dante valued his humanity over his demonic heritage, Vergil was the opposite. Still, the two brothers cared for each other greatly, until one fateful day…
Boomstick: After Sparda died, a lot of his old enemies came looking for a little payback by trying to kill his family, and poor little ten year old Vergil was playing alone in the playground just a few yards from his house when he was ambushed and eventually cornered in a nearby cemetery. As he was surrounded by demons and saw the burning smoke of his house in the distance, a power awoke from deep within the half-blooded boy that let him kill his attackers.
Wiz: Believing that his mother and brother had abandoned him, Vergil had been changed forever by the encounter. He would go on the run alone, coming to find his humanity a weakness as he set out to seek his father's immense power for his own so that he would never be vulnerable again.
Boomstick: And he’s absolutely equipped to do it. As a half-demon Vergil is naturally superhuman, able to move several times faster than a typical human being, jump dozens of times his height, and most notably, he’s got a wicked fast healing factor. Stabbing, impalement, bullets, he can take all manner of beatings and keep getting up. His regeneration is so good he was once perfectly sliced in half at the waist, and generated before it could be a problem.
Wiz: But Vergil’s most dangerous weapon is the Yamato, a mystic demon katana that was left to Vergil by Sparda capable of cutting through anything. Humans, demons, it can even the fabric of space itself. Vergil most often utilizes this through his trademark technique, the Judgment Cut, where Vergil repeatedly slashed through dimensions. Not only that, the tears in dimensions created by Yamato’s sword swings can be used as projectiles as well as to create portals to travel to just about anywhere.
Boomstick: I’d hate to be on the receiving end of the Yamato’s attacks, especially when he amps it up to the Judgement Cut End, where he hits everything that annoys him all at once, and then there’s no more anything.
Wiz: Perhaps this is what the legends meant when they say Yamato can cut through anything. Not that the blade itself is so sharp nothing can stop it, but that its ability to pierce dimensions means there’s nothing that can defend against its attacks. By slicing through the space of a target, Yamato effectively bypasses all forms of conventional durability, and only some equivalent force of the same ability can defend against it.
BoomsticK: Yamato is so effective at severing space it not only destroyed the Mahvel 3 Tier list, but it’s actually what Sparda used to separate the Human World and Demon Worlds in half. And Vergil maximizes its potential with his personal fighting style, the Dark Slayer Style, which focuses on lighting-fast attacks and quick-draw slices from his sheath just like any good anime character in combination with nigh-instantaneous teleportation for both avoiding attacks and getting in real close.
Wiz: Given Devil May Cry’s Japanese Development, it’s then likely that Vergil’s fighting style was developed and inspired by Iaijutsu, a real-life Japanese fighting style focused around the quick-draw and is a largely, counterattack-oriented art, but can also be used for surprise attacks against unexpected enemies, which is reflected in the Dark Slayer style rather well.
Boomstick: Vergil isn’t just a one-trick pony though. With the Beowulf Gauntlets he can unleash lightning fast kicks, devastating Shoryuken’s, and create punches so-powerful the explosion engulfs everything around, while Mirage Edge is a claymore composed of pure demonic energy styled after his father’s Force Edge that let’s him ape some of his brother’s moves like the Stinger, Helm Breaker, Round Trip, and Million Stabs.
Wiz: Vergil doesn’t just use his ability to construct swords out of energy for one means though, as he also created these Mirage Blades as his primary method of ranged attacks. He can fire them off one by one, line them up for rapid fire, have them surround himself or others, and rain them down from above all at once.
Boomstick: But when it’s time to get serious he unleashes his full power and Pulls his Devil Trigger, boosting his demon-physiology to it’s limits by amplifying his power, speed, defense, and healing abilities. Vergil was already crazy strong, so it almost makes you wonder why he even bothered going after Sparda’s power.
Wiz: Well, as they say, “Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely”, but it was awakening his demonic powers that saved Vergil’s life all those years ago, reinforcing in his mind how important it was. As he says to Dante, “Might controls everything, and without strength, you cannot protect anything; let alone yourself.” That said, it’s worth noting that Vergil does have a code of honor and hates fighting dirty, and in particular he hisMirage Blades over traditional firearms because he believes guns to be unbefitting of a true warrior.
Wiz: Though ultimately, Dante awakened a greater strength thanks to his humanity that allowed him to triumph over Vergil, leading to the Elder son choosing to trap himself in the Demon World instead of returning with his brother. There Vergil did battle with the great Mundus, just as his father did all those years ago…
Boomstick: Aaaaand he got horribly, horribly crushed, trounced, and all-around beaten to a bloody-pulp. Not because Mundus was more powerful, the opposite in fact. Mundus himself admitted Vergil was stronger than him, it’s just the fact that Dante and Vergil had worn each other down so much that Vergil didn’t have any strength left to give against Mundus.
Wiz: Which is incredibly impressive given the strength of upper-demons. For example, Dante once fought a demon of similar strength to Mundus called Abigail who could create massive storms capable of eclipsing continents, and Dante beat it…by simply activating Devil Trigger. The mere explosion of energy released by Dante activating Devil Trigger completely defeated Abigail.
Boomstick: Dante even beat Mundus himself later on! And Mundus is so-powerful he can’t cross into the human world. Only only that, Mundus apparently overthrew the original “God of Evil”, and during his climactic battle with Dante, created and manipulated an whole infinitely expanding universe with countless stars. Hell, the two of them even flew through that dimension while fighting each other.
Wiz: That would require them to be moving at well over Nine Million times the speed of light, just for reference. And while Vergil had already reached this level up power, thanks to the decaying and dying state he was left in after fighting Mundus, then being stripped of the Yamato, mentally enslaved, and forced to fight Dante again, Vergil lacked any ability to use his strength. Eventually though, he made his way to Fortune Island where he found the Yamato in the hands of another white-haired devil slayer named Nero.
Boomstick: Yeah, spoiler alert for a five year old game, Nero is Vergil’s son. Don’t ask us how the hell he ended up in bed with someone, we have no clue either. Though Vergil didn’t quite know it either, as he instead forcefully ripped off Nero’s demon arm to take the Yamato back and use its ability to sever anything to also sever himself into two halves, his human side V and his demon size Urizen. Thus began the game where Vergil hired Vergil’s son and Vergil’s brother to defeat Vergil so Vergil could become Vergil, featuring added Vergil DLC.
Wiz: In short, Urzien summoned a massive demon tree called the Qliphoth so that he could farm and collect human blood and be bestowed upon its ultimate power by eating the Qliphoth Fruit. Even after Urizen gained its power he still lost to Dante’s new Sin Devil Trigger form, but it’s worth noting that during their battle Uizen’s attacks were so strong they shook the very Earth itself.
Boomstick: But once Urizen was down for the count, V hobbled on up there and the two merged together once more; and Vergil was reborn anew. Not only was he physically restored back to his peak condition, he even picked up a few new tricks. Now he could make a spooky ghost-clone of himself with Doppelganger, and one-up his brother by also unlocking the ultimate power of Sin Devil Trigger, which aside from boosting his power even further beyond, also lets him fly.
Wiz: Dante and Vergil would prepare for one final face-off as they had done so many times before, but as they did even Vergil gave a moment to pause and wonder if he hadn’t lost his humanity so many years ago.
Boomstick: Though he was still totally ready to fight Dante to the death in a the coolest final boss fight ever that he would have absolutely won…if Nero hadn’t awakened his own Devil Trigger right then and there and told the two brother’s he wasn’t gonna let them kill each other, before beating them both senseless himself.
Wiz: And yet, this actually got through to Vergil, and along with inheriting the memories of his human side V who grew repulsed by his crimes and atrocities. By fighting with and connecting with his son, Vergil finally managed to accept his own humanity, finding a balance between man and evil that Dante and Sparda had both found so many years ago, rekindling his relationship with his brother, and in turn, beginning a new bond with Nero. Though Vergil may be softer now, let that not fool you, for any enemies seeking to challenge the Elder Son of Sparda will find a terrifying foe in their wake.
Pre-Battle[]
Wiz: Alright, the combatants are set and we've run the data through all possibilities.
Boomstick: IT'S TIME FOR A DEATH BATTLE!!!!!
Fight!![]
[Above the Earth]
“WE NEED BACKUP IN HANGER- AHGK!”
A Stormtrooper collapses onto the ground in the midst of the large hanger in a Star Destroyer, laying amongst the bodies of several other Stormtrooper’s scattered abound the hanger, with the most of them surrounding a Lambda-class T-4a shuttle in the center of the hanger. The now slaughtered squadron of Stormtrooper’s had been personally assigned to escorting an important target sought after by Lord Vader, but upon finding himself in the hangar bay, they had turned the tables upon the Stormtrooper.
That target was none other than Vergil, the Elder Son of Sparda. As Vergil took a moment to sheath his katana and slick his hair backwards again, he began to look around the room that he had effectively cleared out with minimal effort, and gave a scoff.
Vergil: Humans are always always pondering what lies beyond the stars, but this… this is disappointing.
Just then, as Vergil was preparing to leave, a sickening chill washed over the room from behind him, and as he turned around, the Dark Slayer found what he could only describe as evil and malice contained in a physical form standing in the doorway. The dark black suit, the chilling artificial breathing, the piercing red eyes. Vergil fully turned around to face the man, no, the monster standing across from him that was Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith.
Darth Vader: I can sense it. Your anger, your pain, and your hatred for the world below. Join me, and I can show you a power beyond your comprehension.
For a moment, Vergil considered the words spoken by the synthetic voice of the man before him, his eyes even twitched at the word “power”, but he would not be tempted by such thoughts anymore. He began to turn away from Vader, only to pop the Yamato out of its sheath and grab the blade before spinning around, swinging the blade to cut through dimensions and throw a slash of energy at the Dark Lord, who blocked it simply by holding his hands out and making a defensive shield.
Vergil: No thanks. I don’t make deals with monsters.
For a moment, Vader actually lowered his head in disappointment, before another breath escaped from his mask as a red hiss suddenly rang out, and the Sith Lord raised his crimson red lightsaber to point its blade at his opponent.
Darth Vader: A pity. Then you will die.
A scowl formed on Vergil’s face as he suddenly dashed forwards, rapidly teleporting across the hanger as he got in close to Vader and swung Yamato in a quick-draw, and sparks flew outwards as Vader parried the attack with a swift swing of his Lightsaber to block Vergil’s strike before pushing the devil backwards. With his Lightsaber only held in one hand, Vader began walking forwards and instantly pressed the attack with more offensive strikes of his own, but Vergil was quick to block the incoming strikes with a few swing of the Yamato before the two entered a bladelock, pushing back at each other with brute strength alone before finally, one gained an advantage. Vader, taking a moment to apply more pressure through his cybernetic limbs, brought his Saber down again to break Vergil’s guard before stabbing him straight through the chest, causing Vergil to let out a loud hiss of pain.
Vader: All too easy.
Vergil: Tch…don’t get so cocky.
In a sudden blue flash Vergil teleported out of the Lightsaber’s blade much to Vader’s surprise, causing him to turning around stiffly as he began to search for his opponent, only to find Vergil standing behind him as a row of Mirage Blades lined up in the Blistering Swords formation beside Vergil before firing out rapidly only for Vader to casually raise one hand and deflect the spectral blades using his Lightsaber with swift defensive swings of his hand. Once Vergil’s attack was finished, Vader raised his left hand and lifted Vergil into the air with Force Grip before beginning to crush the demon with the sheer might of the Force.
That was, until Vergil teleported again to get behind Vader, though the Sith Lord spun around quickly to deflect the incoming strikes from Yamato again, though this time the sheer force of the impact pushed both fighters away from each other, leaving them at more or less of an even stand-still. Though it was clear to both of them neither was taking the other particularly seriously, both fighters had been able to gauge the basics of the other’s fighting style. Vergil knew he was faster, but Vader did as well, and could easily take up a defense that Vergil would need to work hard to break down.
So, the Son of Sparda gripped the hilt of the Yamato, and focused his gaze entirely on Vader as he began to swell with Demonic Energy.
Vergil: Okay then, let’s see you keep up.
Disappearing in a flash of light, Vergil appeared behind Vader yet again before suddenly dashing around again just as Vader began to turn, only for the Sith to glance around as Vergil rapidly dashing around him to feint Vader out with afterimages. Yet, Vader showed no fear, as he allowed the Force to guide his movements and direct his Lightsaber to the optimal positions he’d need to deflect the strikes of the Yamato before beginning to swell the energy of the Force up inside of him and releasing it out as a powerful Force Repulse that blasted Vergil off of his feet.
As Vergil was flung across the hanger Vader quickly raised one of his hands to lift a TIE-Fighter into the air, causing the personal starfighter’s metal to begin creaking under the pressure of the grip before Vader thrusted his hand to the right to fling the TIE-Fighter in the same direction, smashing it into Vergil and crushing him between the TIE-Fighter and the nearest wall with a very loud crashing sound.
Vader: You are strong, but your strength is insignificant next to the power of the Force.
In response, the TIE-Fighter was suddenly and forcefully launched back at Vader with great force, though the Sith Lord only used one hand to motion it to the side so it wouldn’t hit him and instead crashed into another TIE-Fighter behind him. Vergil walked back out, his arms and legs encased in Beowulf's gauntlets and greaves as he turned his focus back to Vader and switched his weapon out for Mirage Edge, replacing Beowulf with the spectral claymore.
Vergil: Is that all? Soon, you will know this devil's power!
Drawing Mirage Edge back to charge it with energy, Vergil threw out several slashes of energy with Over Drive that Vader blocked with his Lightsaber just before Vergil managed to get in close and clashed blades with him, but this time Vergil was quick on his feet and broke off from Vader before getting caught in a longer bladelock. Appearing behind him and forcing Vader to turn around to try and counterattack a blow that never came, because Vergil weaved to Vader’s side drew Mirage Edge back to quickly begin hitting Vader with Million Stabs before drawing the blade back to drag the Sith Lord up into the air, and quickly jumping up after him.
With Vader up in the air, Vergil switched back to the Yamato and quickly performed two distinct slashes before performing a spinning slash and finally sending Vader crashing back down with a mighty blow of the katana, only to sheath the blade again and narrowing his focus before, while still hanging in the air, unleashing a Judgment Cut upon Vader to deal heavy damage to his armor. Vader let out a loud grunt of pain as he was hit by the cut through space which left troublesome damage upon his armor, but he as he looked up he was quickly knocked back as Vergil unleashed a downwards diving kick from above with Beowulf again, smashing Vader back into the ground before drawing a fist around to unleash a heavy charged punch to blast Vader back, causing the sith to skid along the ground a few times before finally stopping.
That was when Vergil noticed that the artificial breathing of Vader’s suit began to grow more intense. Actually, to call it breathing would be wrong, it was more like desperate wheezing and gasping for oxygen. As Vader stood began to stand back upwards, his ecstatic and chaotic breathing slowing, growing more stabilized, he raised his head to face Vergil revealing part of his mask had been broken open, revealing his glowing yellow sith eyes and a part of the scarred tissue of Anakin Skywalker underneath, in addition to his the glove of his left hand begin shredded apart revealing the cybernetic hand.
Vergil had assumed the Sith Lord to be a monster before, the armor a vessel to contain nothing but pure evil, but as he looked at his yellow eye and scarred, burned skin beneath the mask, and the replacement limb, he could see now something entirely different. Someone who had suffered like he had, but unlike himself, had not been able to recover from the fall to darkness.
There was only one thing he could say upon seeing Vader’s true self.
Vergil: What the hell happened to you?
Darth Vader: It is the fate of all who walk the path of the Dark Side. You are no exception.
Calling his Lightsaber back to his hand with the Force, Vader’s left hand began to spark with blue light before he fired out several orbs of kinetite that came flying at Vergil. The first two or three actually managed to actually hit Vergil and deal some serious damage before he quickly swung the Yamato to cleave the space before him apart and destroy the rest of the kinetite orbs. That, however, quickly revealed Vader rapidly approaching from right behind them, and Vergil quickly had to switch to the Mirage Edge to deflect the incoming attacks, but it was clear he was being pushed onto the backfoot again.
Ducking underneath a swing of the Lightsaber, Vergil pushed himself back on the offensive with a few swings of the Mirage Edge that Vader defended again before the Sith began gripping his Lightsaber hilt with both hands and really putting the effort in, augmenting himself with the Force to begin completely overwhelming Vergil with powerful overhead strikes. Sparks flew from each collision of the energy blades as Vader locked himself into another clash with Vergil before he let out a strenuous grunt as he totally broke Vergil’s defense and slash him across his chest with his Lightsaber.
That was suddenly followed up by Vader grabbing Vergil within a Force Grip, the rage of the Dark Side burning inside of him. He wasn’t sure if it was the resistance of his opponent that was getting him so mad or the excruciating pain he was in caused by the damage to his suit, but he was going to make sure Vergil was suffering as well. Dragging Vergil along the hanger bay floor, Vergil was knocked through the bodies of several Stormtrooper’s before lifting him into the air and smashing him onto the Lambda-Class Shuttle he had been brought onto the Star Destroyer in, causing it to explode when a vital spot was hit.
Within the center of the flames lay Vergil, the Son of Sparda breathing heavily while standing back upwards as he looked across at Vader. The Sith Lord was certainly a powerful opponent, so perhaps it was time to stop holding back and show him the true power of a demon.
Vergil: Ha ha ha ha… is this your best?
Darth Bader: Only a taste of the Dark Side’s power.
Vergil: Good. Because now? I’m motivated.
Raising his right hand before himself, Vergil then thrusted it to the side as blue lighting struck him, and his human form was replaced with that of his Devil Trigger. His true demon form unveiled, his raw aura began noticeable to Vader as the Dark Lord took witness to the true strength of his opponent.
Vader: Impressive. Most impressive.
Vergil suddenly came flying forwards as he hit Vader with the rapid slashes of Yamato before firing out several Mirage Blades, though Vader recovered fast enough to deflect them despite the new damage to his armor and his cape being ripped up. Vergil dashed at him again and switched Mirage Edge, and the two briefly clashed blades again before Vergil teleport behind Vader while switching Beowulf, dealing two quick blows to Vader before the sith lord turned around began to parry Vergil’s melee strikes, only for Vergil to weave to the left and duck down, charging up a Shoryuken that sent the two of them spiraling upwards into the air.
This time, however, Vader was able to hit Vergil out of the combo with a swing of his Lightsaber to knock the demon back down to the ground before landing back on his own feet, focusing his control of the Force to push his cybernetic limits harder and faster to keep up with Vergil’s growing power. His mechanic suit could never keep up with someone like this normally, but with the Force, he could simply keep pushing until Vergil had nothing else to give but death.
As Vergil came charging in again Vader swung his Lightsaber to match the yamato again before Vergil suddenly teleported backwards, revealing that there were several Mirage Blades above the Sith that were being rained down upon him. Vader, however, just raised one hand to stop the blades dead in their tracks before he turned them around and fired them back upon their caster, forcing Vergil to teleport to dodge the attacks. The demon reappeared and came striking at Vader, but was met with a swift counterattack as the two came to an even split, a clash that neither one and instead only pushed both further from each other.
This fight was going nowhere fast.
Vergil: Scum, get out of my way!
Darth Vader: Patience, you will be beaten soon enough.
Vader outstretched his hand and grabbed Vergil with the Force to begin crushing his windpipe with Force Crush, the sheer pressure causing Vergil to let out a gasp of pain even in his Devil Trigger while clutching at his throat. Unable to muster up a counterattack, Vergil’s demon eyes focused on Vader as he raised one hand to summon up his Doppleganger, the astral copy of his Devil Form focusing on Vader before it suddenly charged straight form in, brandishing its spectral copy of Yamato and forcing Vader to stop choking its master as he moved to block the incoming attack.
The Doppelganger's strikes certainly had weight to them, Vader would give it that much, but the pale imitation of his true opponent would never defeat him. After literally disarming the Doppleganger with a swing of his Lightsaber before grabbing it with the Force and crushing it until it shattered, Vader began to turn back around only to be punched directly in his stomach, the charged up punch shattering part of the panel of his suit’s life support system before Vergil raised his leg to begin unleashing a series of rapid kicks that started fucking up his armor even more.
But that didn’t deter Vader, who pushed through the attacks and grabbed Vergil by the throat, this time physically, to impale him through the chest with his Lightsaber. A loud demonic hiss escaped from Vergil’s mouth as the saber penetrated his abdomen, and he forcefully punched Vader away from him before demonic energy began to swell and pulse within him as he raised his right hand above his head.
Vergil: Rest in peace!!!!
Bringing his fist down, Vergil punched the floor of the hangar bay, and a white light engulfed everything in the room, including Vader…
KA-BOOOOOOM!!!!!
A loud explosion suddenly rung out that was muffled by the vacuum of space as the Star Destroy in orbit above the Earth began to explode upon itself and splitting in half, causing the deaths of hundreds of crew-members as the Destroyer began to fall out of orbit and get pulled into the Earth’s gravitational pull.
Upon the Star Destroyer, Vader was blasted out of the ship thanks to the Force Barrier he had just barely managed to make for himself before he landed on the outwards hull of the ship, which itself was currently falling apart and threatening to split apart. Even more of Vader’s suit was beginning to fall apart, including a bigger chunk of his helmet, but the Dark Side gave him everything he needed to survive. Now he just needed to find the Son of Sparda…
Which, in truth, proved surprisingly easy as Vergil came blasting out from the hull as he powered up further into Sin Devil Trigger, intent on going well beyond his limits if it meant destroying the Sith Lord.
Vergil: YOU SHALL DIE!!!!
Darth Vader: Now you will experience the full power of the Dark Side!
Drawing on all of his innermost rage, pain, and all other negative emotions, Vader was engulfed in Force Fury as he charged forwards and leaped into the air, clashing blades with Vergil as the two traded a series of Lightspeed attacks between each other before Vader landed back upon the hull of the Star Destroyer and raised his hand to throw chunks of metal at Vergil, only for him to slice between them with ease and begin flying around Vader before charging straight at him and getting into a bladelock with him.
As the two continued clashing blades atop the Star Destroyer, they suddenly broke the lock and began to strike at each other several times over, Vergil not caring that he was being cut through by the Lightsaber while Vader just shrugged off every stab that his body took. Both could keep going. Both were tougher than a mere stab wound. Vader began running forwards as he slashed at Vergil and struck him in the shoulder, but Vergil just knocked the Sith away and the two exchanged three clashes with their sword before Vergil suddenly knocked Vader backwards by slashing through dimensions to break the space between them.
The wreckage of the Star Destroyer began to catch on fire as they fell down through orbit, and for a moment the Demon and the Sith took a moment to stare each other down as they prepared their next clash. Through the fight, both had come to understand each other in a sense, despite how little they still knew about each other, yet they both knew even through the vacant halls of hell, neither would surrender.
Vader took off running, raising his Lightsaber as the truth was revealed to his ember gold eyes while Vergil’s Yamato clashed with his blade. The Elder Son of Sparda had fallen to Darkness just like he had, become a puppet of an evil as great as his own Master, yet unlike himself, he had tamed his inner darkness, returned to the Light like he never could. Vader pushed onwards as the two of them together continued to fight through the fires around them and ice within their hearts forever. Two lost souls, locked in combat, who now remembered the truth of why they still fought.
As the wreckage of the Star Destroyer broke off and began to crash down upon the Earth, the main section of the hull where Vader and Vergil had been fighting upon crashed upon a forest and reduced it to smoldering, flaming ashes with a massive explosion. Within the flames and the ruins lay Vergil down on one knee, who reverted back to his human form as expending so much of his energy fighting. As he looked upwards, however, he almost gasped while seeing Darth Vader walk out of the smoldering flames and wreckage, still standing, still pushing to fight.
Pushing was the apt word to use, as his helmet was now entirely gone, his life-support system was by now fully in ruins, and his mechanical limbs would have long since stopped working after that impact. The only thing sustaining him now is the Force, which did not make him pause or waver. The Dark Side gave him all he needed, his rage burned too bright to give up on the cusp of victory.
Darth Vader: It is inevitable that you tire, but there is no end to the power of the Dark Side.
Vergil began to huff as he pulled himself back onto his feet, standing across from Vader for what would undoubtedly be the last time. Running forwards, Vergil and Vader both charged at each other as Vader raised his Lightsaber and prepared to clash against the Yamato…
Only for Vergil to pierce the fabric of reality, cutting through space in the most vital of moments to sever both of Vader’s hands from his body. As Vader’s human eyes only barely had time to comprehend the loss of his hands, Vergil suddenly forms his Mirage Blades in the Storm Swords formation, letting all of them surround Vader at different angles before they all punctured and penetrated his body, causing him to let out an excruciating yell of pain. Finally, Vergil grabbed Vader by the shoulder, and thrust the Yamato forwards, impaling Vader on the demon blade and spilling the remains of Vader’s blood over it.
Yet, as Vader’s dying gasps began to echo in his ear, Vergil saw no honor in this victory as slaying some mighty evil. No, all he had done was kill a man like himself, someone tormented by loss and corrupted by pain. Or, perhaps it was better to think of it as freeing the man from his pain, and releasing him to the afterlife, where he could be free.
Vergil: All things must end, even our anger and pain. Let go of them, they will do you no good any longer.
Finally, he removed the blade from Vader’s chest, and as the former Sith Lord collapsed onto the ground, as the life faded from his body, blue eyes stared back up at Vergil. Anakin Skywalker lay dead upon the ground.
The fight was over.
As Vergil began to limp away from the fight, he wondered, had he not split himself into V and Urizen, if he would have ended up like Vader; a monster of evil, destined to be slain by his brother or his son. Perhaps it was fortunate for himself then, that through that experience he had finally found his humanity.
Yes. As Vergil swung the Yamato’s blade to make a portal back to Fortune, he knew it was his humanity that let him win this fight. He sought his strength now to protect not himself; but his family, and that is exactly what he had done. He made his way through the portal, stepping out onto Fortune before the orphanage that Nero ran, and smiled.
Before finally passing out from exhaustion.
KO!
Post-Analysis[]
Boomstick: Looks like Vader just wasn’t ready for Vergil’s Righteous cause on Judgment Night.
Wiz: This was an interesting matchup to look at, and surprisingly, both had comparable power. Vader could restrain the physical manifestations of the Light and Dark Side of the Force itself, the Force itself being nigh-omnipresent and existing everywhere in the Star Wars universe, a universe potentially several times larger than our own. However, Vergil surpassed Mundus, who himself could create an ever-expanding infinite universe, something DMC1’s director Hideki Kamiya has repeatedly clarified is the case, so at their best, both characters had above-universal capabilities.
Boomstick: But even if you don’t buy the universal shit for either, given Vader has survived the epicenter of an exploding planet and Urizen, half of Vergil, could shake the planet would his punches alone, it’s pretty clear that at low or high ends of scaling, they’re both directly comparable with each other, which meant raw power alone couldn’t decide this one.
Wiz: Vader certainly gained an edge in direct combat thanks to his years of Jedi training giving him a leg up in direct skill and experience over Vergil, and with all of his Force powers, he technically had the edge in sheer versatility. There were certainly some scenarios where Vader could have won by using Sith Alchemy on Vergil’s soul or going straight for the kill with Force Kill.
Boomstick: But Vergil’s regeneration was insane and Vader didn’t really have a way around it. Remember, he’s survived being bisected, I seriously doubt even crushing some of his internal organs is gonna be an instant win option when Vergil could just teleport out of the attack or throw a Doppleganger at Vader. Plus, while both have some incredible survivability, remember that Vader isn’t healing from attacks like Vergil is, he’s just using the Dark Side to push his body forwards. Wear him down and he eventually, he’s gonna give. Sure, Vergil can be beating to exhaustion as well, but the fact that he’s actually healing means he’d still be in slightly better condition than Vader is.
Wiz: He also had a unique advantage with the Yamato, as its ability to cut space meant their similar power levels were irrelevant, Vergil could simply bypass Vader’s Lightsaber, Force Barriers, and even armor to immediately strike a killing blow if he wanted. Plus he always had the option to switch things up with the Mirage Edge and Beowulf to keep Vader on his toes, giving him a level of flexibility that could keep up with Vader’s versatility.
Boomstick: So it all comes down to who’s faster, and there’s no way around it, Vader never stood a chance in that department. He may consistently react to light speed attacks, but Dante and Mundus in DMC1 could move over Nine Million times the Speed of Light, while fighting each other. Hell, Dante’s pretty consistently reacted to light-speed lasers even as far back as DMC3.
Wiz: Vader’s Precognition could help against Vergil’s speed to an extent, but it wasn’t going to do much against a difference this big, especially when you factor in Vergil’s more agile fighting style and teleportation.
Boomstick: Plus with Yamato’s portals he could always just BFR Vader to the Demon World or some desolate planet. Is it out of character, yeah, but technically possible. Guess that’s just what you get for fighting the guy who single handedly runs the Marvel 3 tier list.
Wiz: In the end, while Vader was a terrifying killer, Vergil just had the right skill set needed to bring down the Dark Lord.
Boomstick: I guess even Sith May Cry when faced with a Son of Sparda.
Wiz: The winner is Vergil.
