History[]
Origins[]
Ungoliant was a giant spider demon from the first age of middle earth. Her origins are unknown, which is rare for books set in the Middle earth universe, as Tolkin was famous for explaining everything in great detail, but with Ungoliant, nobody is really sure what she is. It is stated that not even the Valar know where Ungoliant originates from. It also is stated that she originates from the darkness that once lay around the planet Arda. It is likely that she is a Maia or even a evil version of Tom bombadil, another anomaly in middle earth, but because no information was ever conclusive on this topic, it is unknown what race of beings she is a part of.
Early life[]
When the Valar beat and imprisoned Melkor after the battle of the powers, Ungoliant fled from the Valar and the hunters of Oromë and went to the south. Now in a new place, she went to work establishing a home for herself, in a ravine south of the great mountain Hyarmentir. There she created her lair, establishing a home for herself. She took on the form of a spider at this time. She then sucked all the light from the area, using it to spin webs of unlight (A power of hers) to capture all the light that passed her by.
Destruction of the two trees[]
After Melkor's escape from the Valar, he would seek out his old ally in order to destroy the two trees of Valinor. He came to her home and got her allegiance, by promising her anything that would state her unending hunger, and also promising she could drink the sap of the two trees. Thus the duo came to Valinor during a festival, and Melkor cut open both of the trees, leaving Ungoliant to suck them dry. She then proceeded to drink the wells of Varda dry. The duo then escaped Valinor, with pursuit from Oromë and Tulkas. Ungoliants unlight ability allowed them to escape these to gods unharmed. They escaped back to Middle Earth, however, Melkor now feared Ungoliant, as she had swelled to such a terrible height and stature that the dark lord was made afraid.
Ungoliants betrayal and later life[]
Following the destruction of the two trees, Ungoliant demanded the gems that he had stolen should be hers. Melkor now fearing her massive size and power, submitted to her and gave her the lesser gems. But he refused to give her the Silmarils. This caused her to attack, overpowering Melkor and wrapping him in her dark webs of unlight. He screamed a terrible scream, louder than any that would ever be heard in any other age of middle earth. This summoned his massive army of Balrogs, who forced Ungoliant back and eventually made her retreat and then flee, leaving to return to her home. Just as nobody knows her origin, nobody knows how she died. After her defeat, she retreated to her home, and slowly starved without food. Eventually, legend has it, that in her endless hunger, she devoured herself.
Powers and Abilities[]
Ungoliant was a powerful entity, with immense offensive power in the form of her main weapon, the unlight. The unlight was not darkness, but more was the absence of light, turning the light into a void of no light that could hide her and Melkor even from the Valar. This shroud could also conceal her movements while she was still journing, or spread out around her in an aura. It is said many times that she can spin webs of darkness, which was able to hold Melkor himself. Her venom was powerful enough to kill both the two trees, which represent the sun and the moon. So as stupid as it sounds, her venom is star level. Her main offensive fighting though will probably be using her massive body to squish, impale, or grapple with an opponent that she faces in battle.
Speed[]
The question of speed is hard to quantify. She is never shown to have any crazy speed feats on her own. She fights Melkor, who can move between Arda and the timeless halls, and also in a very early draft of Tolkien's Legendarium, she threatens to consume Eärendil the mariner, who is basically a guy who rides a ship through space that is also a star. These two feats of fighting light speed beings could place her at being light speed herself. There is also the fact that she catches the light in her webs, and consumes it, so there is also a strong argument for her to be able to keep up with light-speed beings.
Feats[]
- Defeated Melkor and threated to consume him
- She withstood the cry of Melkor (Morgoth) at point-blank range, which destroyed the rocks, shook the mountains, made the earth shake and was heard for hundreds of kilometers; at the same time, she did not suffer a drop
- She survived the attack of the balrogs and was able to escape from them. Balrogs can destroy mountains, destroy entire kingdoms alone, and travel at hypersonic speeds.
- Destroyed the two tress of Valinor
- Managed to hide herself from all the Valar and Maiar
- It is said that "No light can pierce her webs"
- Came close to consuming Eärendil the mariner in a early version of the text
- Her Unlight can block the light of the Valar
- Drank the wells of Varda, which is what every star was made out of.
- Even the Valar feared her
- Tulkas, the strongest of the Valar in physical strength, could not pierce her webs.
Weaknesses[]
- Ungoliant will die if she does not constantly feed
- Weak to fire
- Beaten by the Balrogs
- Dead by self-consumption
