Toothless dragonite

Toothless vs. Dragonite

Description: Toothless vs. Dragonite. Two powerful dragons of legend, who are known to have human partners who train them.

Introduction[]

Wiz: Dragons, fire-breathing lizards of legend, who are often considered among the top tier of mythical creatures.

Boomstick: They may be powerful and scary, but sometimes they can be totally adorable! And these two are living proof that something can be both cute and intimidating.

Wiz: Toothless, the legendary Night Fury, who’s often considered the fiercest of dragons.

Boomstick: And Dragonite, the pseudo-Legendary Pokemon who’s as powerful as he is cute. He’s Wiz and I’m Boomstick.

Wiz: And it’s our job to analyze their strength, speed, and abilities to find out who would win a Death Battle.

Toothless[]

Wiz: In the land of Berk, the people spent generations fighting off hordes of dragons that would come to steal their food and burn their village. And none had a more fearsome, more ferocious, reputation than the dreaded Night Fury.

Boomstick: Don’t be fooled by the cat-like behavior and adorableness. This guy is the most badass dragon around, and with very good reason.

Wiz: Hunted to the brink of extinction, the last living Night Fury was shot down by Hiccup, the son of the village chief. However, instead of killing him, Hiccup formed a very unique and special bond with the Night Fury.

Boomstick: And get this, he named the thing Toothless, on the count of his retractable jaws. Now you see ‘em, now you don’t.

  • Background
    • Age: 15 (at the start of the series)
    • Length: 26 feet (from nose to tail)
    • Wingspan: 45 feet
    • Weight: 1,776 lbs.
    • Species: Night Fury
    • Strike Class
    • Fire Type
    • Last of his species
    • Known as the “Unholy Offspring of Lightning and Death Itself”
    • Current alpha and King of the Hidden World
    • Dragon Rider partnership with Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III
    • Dragon leader of the Riders of Berk
    • Prosthetic, fireproof tail-fin

Wiz: The retractable jaws are a necessity, as Night Furies are capable of launching explosive plasma blasts. And if they couldn’t retract their teeth, they would, well, quite literally blow them out of their mouth.

Boomstick: But Hiccup naming his new dragon pal was only the start of a beautiful friendship. Not just between the two of them, but between all of Berk and the dragons they once considered enemies.

Wiz: Over the years, the people of Berk and the dragons went on many adventures together, saving humans and dragons alike from anyone or anything seeking to harm them.

Boomstick: And with Hiccup and Toothless leading their new team of Dragon Riders, nothing could stop them, despite both of them being a little… uh, lacking.

Wiz: As a result of being shot down, Toothless ended up losing half of his tail-fin, which prevented him from flying properly, or at all really. So, using his ingenuity, Hiccup created an artificial tail-fin that he controlled while riding on Toothless’ back, allowing them to fly together, and take on creatures like the terrible Red Death… which resulted in Hiccup losing half a leg.

Boomstick: Aside from that little setback, Hiccup learned a whole bunch about the different kinds of dragons, especially his buddy, Toothless. And boy was there a lot to learn.

  • Powers and Abilities
    • Flight
    • Explosive plasma blasts
    • Alpha Mode
    • Command of other dragons
    • Near human level intelligence
    • Claws and retractable teeth
    • Can channel lightning
    • Invisible scales when heated or channeling electricity
    • Can fly up to 900 mph
    • Echolocation
    • Healing properties in saliva
    • Armored fireproof scales
    • Can carry up 400 lbs.

Wiz: Despite not being a natural alpha, Toothless held all the qualities needed to eventually become one, even taking on other dragons much bigger and stronger than him.

Boomstick: If you thought the Red Death was bad, Toothless actually took on a Bewilderbeast, the natural born alpha of the dragon species. Not only is this thing freakin’ enormous, it also has dragon mind controlling abilities that Toothless was able to shake off before he took over leadership of all the dragons, even blasting the Bewilderbeast’s tusk off. And that was after he withstood a blast of that thing’s ice breath.

Wiz: With Hiccup by his side, Toothless only continued to grow stronger and deepen their bond. Not to mention learning new things about himself along the way. Like how he can open his back spikes to make rapid short turns while flying, or how to channel and unleash bursts of lightning, which he used to take out a group of Deathgrippers.

Boomstick: Fire and lightning powers, now that’s what I call an awesome combination.

Wiz: Unfortunately, despite Toothless’ growing power and increasing rank among dragon-kind, he was still reliant on Hiccup to fly. That is, until he met a similar species to the Night Fury that came to be known as the Light Fury.

Boomstick: It was pretty much love at first sight for Toothless. But due to bad experiences with humans, the Light Fury wouldn’t go anywhere near him while Hiccup was around. But since Toothless helped him land his own lady love, Hiccup decided to return the favor by making a new artificial, fireproof tail-fin that would allow Toothless to fly on his own. Kind of like your arm, Wiz, only you can’t fly. Sucks for you.

Wiz: My arm works fine, thanks.

Boomstick: Still can’t fly though.

Wiz: Now without limitations, Toothless rose even further in the ranks, eventually becoming the King of Dragons and ruling over the Hidden World.

Boomstick: From borderline extinct to top dog. Is there anything Toothless can’t do?

  • Feats
    • Defeated a Red Death and a Bewilderbeast (with help)
    • Created a sonic boom while flying
    • Took out a pack of Deathgrippers
    • Broke free of a Bewilderbeast’s mind control
    • Achieved Alpha Dragon status
    • Survived a Bewilderbeast’s ice blast
    • Survived a kilometer high fall
    • Knocked down a dragon-proof ballista

Wiz: Well, like all dragons, Toothless has his share of weaknesses and shortcomings. Much like a cat, he’s easily distracted by shiny objects, he reacts to Dragon Nip the same way a cat would for cat nip, and certain motions can cause him to become disorientated, as can loud noises.

Boomstick: There’s also that sensitive spot under his neck that all dragons seem to have that causes them to go all fuzzy inside. Like that spot behind the ears where dogs love to be scratched. Honestly though, I like being scratched there too.

Wiz: But perhaps Toothless’ biggest weakness is his aversion to eels. In fact, nearly all dragons seem to be both disgusted and even fearful of them. And if they ever eat one, they can actually become pretty sick.

Boomstick: Uch, I don’t like eel either. *Gasp* Wait, Wiz, do you think I could actually be some kind of humanoid dragon?

Wiz: You certainly have a case of dragon breath right now. When’s the last time you brushed your teeth?

Boomstick: When’s the last time you had a date?

Wiz: Actually, I have one right after this Death Battle.

Boomstick: What th-the!?

Wiz: Despite his vulnerabilities, Toothless has quite the reputation as being one of the strongest and fastest dragons around, especially when he enters his Alpha Mode, which is a state any dragon can enter when challenging the current alpha. In this state, Toothless is able to reach his true potential. His body starts glowing, and his attacks become more powerful. Even his shot limit goes up to at least 11, suggesting that it doubles, although it could actually be limitless.

Boomstick: Before that, he couldn’t manage more than 6 shots without needing to rest and recharge.

Wiz: But even in his regular form, Toothless has proven himself more than worthy to hold the title of King of Dragons.

Dragonite[]

Wiz: In the world of Pokemon, one of the most powerful Types is Dragon. And one of the greatest and most known of this Type is Dragonite.

Boomstick: Don’t let the adorable cuteness fool you; Dragonite is one badass powerhouse, whose defense is just as great as his offense. And boy does it show.

Wiz: Dragonite is the evolved form of Dragonair, and the final form of Dratini. Even in these early stages, the Dragonite line is known as the Legendary Dragon of the Sea, which is why in Generation 1, many actually considered him to be an actual Legendary.

  • Background
    • Height: 7’03
    • Weight: 463 lbs.
    • Type: Dragon/Flying
    • 3rd stage of Dratini
    • Evolves from Dragonair at level 55
    • PokeDex Entry - #159
    • Pseudo-Legendary Pokemon
    • Total Stats – 600 (in game)
    • Notable Trainers – Lance, Drake, Iris, Ash, Professor Oak, Clair, Provo, Palmer, Red
    • Sync Pair with Lance
    • Weak to Rock, Ice, Dragon, and Fairy Types
    • Was dubbed as “The Sea Incarnate”
    • Known for saving humans drowning at sea and leading ships through storms
    • Will go on uncontrollable rampages when its environment is threatened
    • Can fly faster than any other Pokemon (except for Mega Latios)

Boomstick: Dragonite might not be an actual Legendary Pokemon, but he’s got the skills and power to be able to challenge one. Dragonite may be cute, but you don’t want to mess with one.

Wiz: As rare as it is powerful, very few Pokemon Trainers have ever been able to obtain a Dragonite. The most well-known Trainer is Lance the Dragon Master, the strongest member of the Kanto Elite Four, and the Pokemon Master Champion of the Johto Region, until he lost to Gold that is.

Boomstick: And there was that Drake guy from the Orange Islands that Ash just barely managed to beat. Even then it took pretty much his entire Pokemon team to beat that guy’s Dragonite, and they barely managed to pull that off. They don’t call Dragonite the dragon of champions for nothing.

Wiz: No one calls it that, but due to its rarity, its level of power, and being a third stage evolution, Dragonite is often called a pseudo-Legendary, and it does seem that those who do posses a Dragonite go on to become champions. Which really isn’t a surprise, considering how strong the species is. For a long time, Dragonite was considered the non-Legendary Legendary Pokemon.

Boomstick: In the words of one of my favorite YouTubers, Austin Lee Matthews, if you wanna take on a Dragonite, you best be packing another Dragonite.

Wiz: Um, in the words of who?

Boomstick: Wiz, I feel so bad for you.

  • Powers and Abilities
    • Flight
    • Super speed
    • Can fly 1,556 mph
    • Assortment of Pokemon attacks
    • Near human level intelligence
    • Signature moves - Outrage, Hyper Beam
    • Special abilities - Inner Focus, Multiscale
    • Sync Moves - Unrivaled Outrage, Now or Never!
    • Sync Skills - Dragon Shift, Lithe, Unflappable, Dragon Strike
    • Immune to Ground Types
    • Resistant to Fighting, Bug, Fire, Water, and Grass Types

Wiz: …Moving on, Dragonite isn’t just strong, he’s incredibly fast. Capable of easily flying more than twice the speed of sound, Dragonite has been known to reach speeds of 1,556 miles per hour or more, about three times the speed of an average airplane. Meaning Dragonite could actually fly around the entire world in just 16 hours.

Boomstick: Dragonite’s not just fast and strong, it’s ridiculously hard to take down since it’s got such a high HP, defense, and resistance, especially in the good old days.

Wiz: Well, like all Pokemon, Dragonite has its resistances and weaknesses. Its biggest weakness, however, are Ice Type attacks, which can actually deliver four times the amount of usual damage.

Boomstick: Pfft, Ice nothing. Dragonite can learn Fire Type moves. And I’m pretty sure that fire beats ice.

Wiz: And although it’s not as effective as Ice, Dragonite is also weak to other Dragon Type attacks, along with Rock and Fairy. In fact, Dragon Type moves are completely ineffective against Fairy Type Pokemon.

Boomstick: Which is some of the biggest load of crap I’ve ever heard. I get that they realized that Dragon was too OP and wanted to make a Type to counter them, but come on, Fairy Type?

Wiz: Well, Pokemon does essentially work with a Rock-Paper-Scissors battle theme, so it only makes sense.

Boomstick: I ain’t saying that there can’t be a Type that’s immune to Dragon attacks, but seriously, freakin’ Fairy?

Wiz: Despite this unusual weakness, Dragonite still possesses a wide variety of abilities, not the least being his impressive arsenal of attacks.

Boomstick: Hoho, you should see what this guy’s packing. And that doesn’t even include the wide variety of TM and HM moves he can learn.

Wiz: TMs and HMs, or Technical Machines and Hidden Machines, are additional attacks that a Pokemon can learn. The anime and manga seem to indicate that while a Pokemon won’t typically learn these moves naturally as it levels up, they can still learn them, as evident by wild Pokemon who wouldn’t have had access to TMs or HMs have been seen using these moves, where, in the games, a TM or HM would be required. This seems to indicate that under the right conditions, moves that would usually require a TM or HM can in fact be learned without them. Meaning that Dragonite’s potential and variety of already impressive attacks is even greater than his standard move-set. And that’s not even including the attacks he’s able to learn in the Dratini and Dragonair stages. It should also be noted that Dragonair has the power to control the weather, which should give you an idea of what Dragonite is truly capable of.

  • Feats
    • Can fly around the world in 16 hours
    • Defeated the Red Gyarados
    • Defeated Team Rocket Executive, Petrel
    • Destroyed Team Rocket’s radio wave generator
    • Helped stop the feuding between Groudon and Kyogre
    • Redirected his own Hyper Beam
    • Leads Lance’s Dragon army

Boomstick: Dragonite may have a bunch of cool moves, but nothing beats his most well-known attack, Hyper Beam!

Wiz: Hyper Beam is one of the most powerful Pokemon attacks there is. It involves gathering a large amount of energy into a single point, and then unleashing it in a powerful beam that tears through anything in its path. In the games, this move is so powerful that it requires the user to rest and recharge during their next turn in order to replenish its energy. However, in the anime and manga, we have seen several instances where Pokemon have been able to use Hyper Beam and not need to take any time to recover, and sometimes even repeatedly use the attack numerous times in the span of just a few seconds.

Boomstick: Yeah, forget that recharging crap. If any Pokemon is strong enough to use Hyper Beam and not need to recharge, it’s Dragonite. Or you can just have him repeatedly use Wrap, which he learned back as Dragonair, to trap your opponent so they can never attack.

Wiz: That was more exclusive to Gen 1. Nowadays, Dragonite’s move Outrage is the better alternative, and is even classified as Dragonite’s most signature move. Dragonite is also known to use a variety of moves to boost his own speed and attack power, and even heal himself.

Boomstick: Or if you’re like me when I wipe the floor with Wiz’s team, Dragonite can lower his opponent’s attack and defense, or even confuse, freeze, and paralyze them, or make them flinch, something that can’t happen to Dragonite thanks to his Inner Focus ability. That’s right, Dragonite is so tough that he literally never flinches.

Wiz: One thing is for sure, even though Dragonite isn’t actually a Legendary Pokemon, he’s more than earned his right to stand beside them.

Interlude[]

Wiz: Alright the combatants are set. Time to end this debate once and for all.

Boomstick: It's time for a Death Battle!

The Battle[]

Lance is standing on the edge of a cliff, looking out at the ocean.

Lance: “Lots of islands to explore out there. I wonder if there are any Pokemon who can provide a challenge.”

Suddenly, Toothless goes flying by, surprising Lance as he flies out over the ocean.

Lance: “What was that? Some kind of Dragon Pokemon I’ve never seen before? Hmm, I should look into this. Go, Dragonite!”

He throws a PokeBall, and Dragonite pops out. Lance points in the direction Toothless had flown off in.

Lance: “Dragonite, bring that Pokemon back here.”

Dragonite. “Nite!”

Dragonite flies after Toothless. He catches up as they’re flying over a series of islands, and flies in front of him, cutting him off.

Dragonite: “Nite, Nite.”

Toothless cocks his head to the side, not understanding, and grunts back a response. Dragonite moves in, trying to herd Toothless back to the mainland. Toothless doesn’t appreciate it and growls in response. When Dragonite tries again, Toothless swipes at him in warning. Dragonite pulls back and addresses Toothless more aggressively.

Dragonite: “Nite, Nite, Niiiiite!”

Toothless pupils narrow into slits and he snarls at Dragonite. Dragonite pulls back and glares at Toothless, ready to battle.

FIGHT!

Toothless fires a plasma blast at Dragonite. It explodes against him, but Dragonite counters by flying forward and throwing a punch, striking Toothless. Toothless responds by slashing rapidly at Dragonite, who jolts back with each swipe. Dragonite manages to catch one of Toothless’ claws, spins him around, and throws him, then uses Dragon Pulse to fire a shockwave.

Toothless manages to halt his momentum, only to be hit by the Dragon Pulse, and sent spinning through the air again. Dragonite appears in front of him, and Toothless fires a plasma blast. Using Agility, Dragonite vanishes out of the attack’s path and appears behind him. Toothless turns around and fires again, only to miss a second time as Dragonite disappears again. He reappears behind Toothless once more, and begins throwing punches. He hits Toothless several times before pulling his fist back for one final hit. His fist begins glowing light blue as he uses Ice Punch. The blow causes Toothless to freeze over, and he drops from the sky.

As Toothless falls, he suddenly breaks free from the block of ice and resumes flying. Dragonite roars and flies down at him. Before he can hit, however, Tothless roars loudly, and a bolt of lightning comes down and strikes him. He unleashes the electricity in all different directions, and Dragonite is struck moments before he would have hit Toothless. Dragonite cries out as he’s shocked, and now he begins to fall from the sky. Toothless flies down after him and grabs hold. He flies down faster, bringing Dragonite with him, and he slams Dragonite to the ground on one of the islands.

Leaping off Dragonite, Toothless bites down on Dragonite’s tail, then whips around and lets him go. Dragonite crashes into a tree and falls to the ground, and Toothless roars at him. Dragonite gets up, glaring at Toothless. He roars and uses Thunder Wave. The bolts hit Toothless, but rather than paralyzing him, Toothless turns invisible, and Dragonite cocks his head to the side in confusion.

There’s a blur of movement as Toothless moves, and he fires another plasma blast. It explodes against Dragonite, and he goes down. Toothless suddenly tackles him, pinning Dragonite to the ground. He becomes visible again, standing on Dragonite’s chest, growling down into his face.

Dragonite suddenly uses Iron Head, slamming his forehead into Toothless’ face. Toothless stumbles back on his hind legs, dazed as he clutches his head. Dragonite hops up and flies into the air. He begins to gather energy in his mouth, then unleashes his Hyper Beam. The beam hits Toothless, carrying him off, and Toothless goes crashing through the trees.

When the attack finishes, Dragonite is left winded, and begins panting in exhaustion. A few moments later, Toothless comes leaping back into the clearing. He snarls at Dragonite and pounces at him. Dragonite manages to catch him, and Toothless snaps and swipes at him, trying to scratch and bite.

Whirling around, Dragonite tosses Toothless into the sky, but Toothless spreads his wings to stop himself from going flying. Hovering in mid-air, he fires a plasma blast that causes Dragonite to stumble back upon impact. Then Toothless opens his spikes running down his back and zooms at Dragonite, slamming into him. Dragonite stumbles back some more, and Toothless comes at him again and again, not even letting Dragonite fall to the ground before hitting him again.

As Toothless comes in for another attack, Dragonite regains his bearings. Using Iron Tail, he spins around and whacks Toothless with his tail, sending him flying into the sky. Dragonite spreads his wings and flies after him. Using his Extremespeed, he flies into Toothless, then comes at him again. This time it’s Toothless who gets knocked around as Dragonite flies into him over and over again from different directions.

Toothless brings down more lightning and unleashes it before Dragonite can hit him again. Dragonite cries out as the electricity flows over him, and drops from the sky. Toothless zooms after him, but Dragonite manages to pull out of his dive before he hits the ground, and Toothless zooms after him. Dragonite turns to face Toothless and begins rapidly flapping his wings as he unleashes Hurricane. A force of powerful wind slams into Toothless and sends him flying backwards, away from Dragonite.

With a minute to spare, Dragonite lands and uses Roost. He tucks his wings in and assumes a resting position, as he begins to recover, little hearts beginning to rise off his body as his injuries heal. A few seconds later though, Toothless comes flying back over, carrying a large boulder that he throws at Dragonite. Dragonite raises his arms and catches it, and Toothless lands and fires a plasma blast while Dragonite’s hands are full.

The blast causes the boulder in Dragonite’s arms to explode, and he and stumble back from the blast. Toothless jumps up and flies at him again, but Dragonite suddenly uses Wrap, spitting a binding string substance that coils around Toothless, causing him to fall to the ground. Dragonite then takes the opportunity to perform Dragon Dance, and begins glowing as he raises his attack and speed.

Toothless gets to his feet, even as the Wrap squeezes him, and attempts to fire another plasma blast, but only a puff of smoke escapes him, indicating that he’s out of shots. Dragonite turns back to him and takes a deep breath, then suddenly unleashes Fire Blast. Toothless recoils as the attack comes at him, but it hits, and a large blaze consumes him.

Dragonite stomps his feet and roars in victory. But then Toothless suddenly emerges from the flames, completely unharmed from the attack, and now free of the Wrap. He begins to glow blue as he enters Alpha Mode, and Dragonite’s eyes widen in surprise.

With a snarl, Toothless fires a plasma blast. It explodes against Dragonite with even more power than before, and Dragonite stumbles back. Toothless repeatedly fires at him, each blast knocking Dragonite back more and more, and he cries out each time, eventually collapsing to his hands and knees. Toothless fires again, but this time Dragonite counters. He uses his Ice Punch, punching at the incoming plasma blast, causing an explosion of fire and ice.

Toothless growls at the cloud of smoke obscuring Dragonite, ready to fire again. The cloud of smoke suddenly gets blown away, revealing Dragonite, flapping his wings to clear away the smoke. Toothless fires again, but this time Dragonite uses Barrier, and it blocks the plasma blast, though the Barrier shatters from the explosion. Dragonite then uses Outrage, and goes in to attack. Toothless fires at him repeatedly, but Dragonite uses his speed to dodge and maneuver around the incoming plasma blasts. He meets Toothless and unleashes a series of blows from his Outrage.

When the assault is finished, Toothless stumbles about, his eyes rolling around in confusion as imaginary birds fly around his head. Dragonite attacks again, using Superpower, and Toothless is blasted off his feet. He remains in Alpha Mode though, and turns back to Dragonite. He opens his mouth to fire another plasma blast, but suddenly goes cross-eyed and closes his mouth in his confusion, and the plasma blast explodes inside it, causing Toothless to collapse.

Dragonite uses his Agility to quickly move behind Toothless. He grabs him by the tail and swings him over his shoulder, slamming him to the ground. Then he spins Toothless around and throws him, sending Toothless flying through the air.

As Toothless goes flying into the distance, Dragonite realizes he’s still holding something, and holds up Toothless’ prosthetic tail-fin, looking at it in confusion.

Toothless goes tumbling through the air, trying to fly, but unable to without his tail-fin. Dragonite flies up towards him, gathering energy in his mouth, and fires a Hyper Beam. The beam carries Toothless off the island, and he goes splashing into the ocean. He begins treading water, trying to swim, but unable to take to the air, and only continues thrashing around.

Dragonite raises his arms and uses Draco Meteor. Comets suddenly come raining down from the sky, and one crashing down on Toothless. He sinks beneath the surface, and Dragonite uses Ice Beam, freezing the surface of the water. He comes down and lands on the ice, and looks down at it as Toothless swims up to the barrier of ice and begins scratching at it. He and Dragonite look at each other through the ice, and Toothless opens his mouth, as if to fire another plasma blast.

But then his Alpha Mode blue glow fades away, and he sinks down into the water’s dark depths, disappearing from sight. Dragonite drops down into a sitting position and emits a sigh of relief.

KO!

A nervous looking Dragonite is seen rubbing his head uneasily as he presents Toothless’ prosthetic tailfin to Lance, who sweat-drops as he looks at it.

Outcome[]

Boomstick: NOOOO!!! How could the King of Dragons lose to something so cute and cuddly? I mean, they’re both adorable, but come on, it’s a freakin’ Night Fury!

Wiz: Which indeed made for a very good match, as both Toothless and Dragonite put up a great fight, but Dragonite had too many advantages over Toothless, from his attacks to his defenses.

Boomstick: I guess that’s true. Dragonite is pretty much resistant to everything Toothless threw at him, except for the whole lightning thing.

Wiz: Toothless is a very powerful dragon, but his special attacks really only include blasts of plasma and channeling lightning. Unfortunately for him, Dragonite is resistant to Fire Type attacks, and Electric ones only do standard damage. But with Dragonite having such a high defense, none of Toothless’ attacks would have caused him that much damage. And while it’s true that Toothless defeated a Bewilderbeast, he didn’t do it alone.

Boomstick: Yeah, he did pretty much have an entire dragon army helping him in that fight. He just delivered the final blow that broke off the Bewilderbeast’s tusk and sent it running.

Wiz: Dragonite, however, has a wide variety of attacks that he can learn, both naturally and with TMs and HMs. Fire, Water, Electric, Dragon, Ice, Flying, Normal Type moves all are within Dragonite’s ability to learn naturally. Not to mention his other abilities that can amplify his own speed, attack, defense, and specials. And that doesn’t even include the moves available to him with TMs.

Boomstick: Dragonite can also sacrifice being a Flying type for one turn to heal himself; however that works.

Wiz: We haven’t seen an example of this in the anime, but Dragonite can naturally learn the move Roost, which will allow Dragonite to heal half his HP, but requires him to become a pure Dragon Type rather than a Dragon/Flying Type for the rest of his turn. However, this shouldn’t affect Dragonite that much, or have any drawbacks in his fight with Toothless. Even if it did, he would regain his Flying type shortly after. So not only does Dragonite have great attack power and defensive power, he also has the ability to heal himself.

Boomstick: And his speed. We can’t forget about his speed.

Wiz: It’s hard to say for sure exactly how fast Toothless is, as his speed is simply listed as 20, but it doesn’t indicate if this is knots, or miles per hour, or kilometers, or what. But judging by his feats of speed that we’ve seen in the movies and series, we’ve determined that his max speed to be about 900 miles per hour. Which seems fairly accurate based on the Book of Dragons that states that the Night Fury can fly faster than 750 miles per hour. Very fast for a dragon in the How To Train Your Dragon series, but well below Dragonite’s speed of 1,556 miles per hour. And Dragonite can even increase his speed further with the use of moves like Agility, Extremespeed, and Dragon Dance.

Boomstick: And then comes the biggest factor of all, attack number limitations.

Wiz: In the How To Train Your Dragon series, a dragon has a limited number of shots it can take before it runs out and needs to rest and recover. The Night Fury seems to have the highest, having a total of 6 shots. Although, it’s possible that in his Alpha Mode that that number is limitless, there’s no actual evidence to support this, as the most shots we’ve seen him take in this mode is 11.

Boomstick: Pokemon have a limited number of times they can attack too, based on their PP count. Hehe, PP.

Wiz: It stands for ‘Power Points’. And while this is a feature in the games, for obvious gameplay reasons, there seems to be a layer of truth to this in the anime and manga as well, as evident by how Lt. Surge’s Raichu ran out of electricity when battling Ash’s Pikachu. But even if a Pokemon does run out of PP for a particular move, it still has a number of others it can use, and can also resort to the damage recoiling attack Struggle if it needs to.

Boomstick: And unlike in the games, a Pokemon can clearly know more than four moves, meaning that even if Dragonite ran out of PP for one particular move, he had a number of various other attacks he could fall back on. But once Toothless ran out of shots, his chances of winning were almost as extinct as his species.

Wiz: That’s not exactly true, as even without his shots, Toothless is still a fearsome opponent, but in the end, it wasn’t enough for him to take down the true original dragon of Pokemon.

Boomstick: The O.D. of the O.G. ain’t no one’s fool; not even a Night Fury’s.

Wiz: The winner is Dragonite.
