Weaknesses[]

Night Furies have very few weaknesses, making them hard to combat.

  • Tailfin Dependency: A Night Furies main weakness is their tailfins. If their natural one is cut or damaged then they are unable to fly. Toothless can't fly if his prosthetic tail fin is damaged. However Toothless has many and eventually Hiccup made him one out of pure Night Fury scales that make this weakness inactive.
  • Cold Temperatures: According to Grimmel the Grisly, Night Furies are unable to survive in consistently cold environments like tundras, snowy mountains, or arctic islands. However repeatedly in several episodes like "Animal House" and "A Time to Skrill" it was shown that Toothless was able to survive in a cold environment without any discomfort. This implies that a Nighty Fury can't inhabit a cold place for an enormous amount of time, or this weakness doesn't apply to Toothless because during his time with Hiccup he developed an immunity to cold by regulating his body temperature with a buildup of energy, he has a much higher resilience to cold.
  • Flying Long Distances: According to Grimmel the Grisly, Night Furies are also unable to fly for long distances without resting/sleeping, which can make them easy to track or hunt down. However, Toothless seems to be able to surpass this weakness himself as shown multiple times to go on for several weeks without resting or sleeping.

Night Furies have standard dragon weakness:

  • Eels: Dragons avoids eels as much as possible because they can make him sick. It makes all species of dragons (except for the Typhoomerang) very sick and hostile, while increasing the number and power of their shots, even changing the color of the fire. It also disorients their senses; dragons see blurry and contorted images. This makes a dragon confused and frustrated, thus making it aggressive.
  • Blue Oleander: The Blue Oleander flower can make him sick. Only the Scauldron's venom can cure other Dragons being afflicted with Blue Oleander.
  • Dragon Root: The plant is the exact counterpart of Dragon Nip and Sagefruit: instead of making dragons calm, it makes them very aggressive. Even trained dragons will try to attack each other, but the dragons' riders can calm them down to a state of wariness, until the dragon root can be removed from their presence. Dragon root arrows will disorient him, severely limiting his flight & combat capabilities. For some reason Night Furies are renders more weak and vulnerable for some time, while other dragons can recover faster, as seen in "Enemy of My Enemy".
  • Grimora Parasites: Grimora parasites cause Toothless to revert to a feral state.
  • Shot Limit: Can only shoot a limited number of plasma blasts before needing to recharge. The exact number of shots tends to be inconsistent, but Toothless is shown to recharge his shots very quickly.
  • Chin Scratching: Scratching a spot at the bottom of his neck will incapacitate him.
  • Loud Noises: Toothless' acute senses can make him disoriented by loud noises caused from clattering objects or other dragons like the Screaming Death's roar can disorient Toothless, even while flying. However, it is shown that loud sounds don’t affect Night Furies that badly compared to other dragons.
  • Deathgripper Venom: Similar to all dragons, Night Furies are also susceptible to Deathgripper venom, with one vial being enough to subdue one into submission or knock them unconscious.
