History[]

Origins[]

"Nine for mortal men doomed to die..." In the second age of Middle earth the dark lord Sauron gave knowledge to the elf Celebrimbor of how to make powerful rings. Working together Sauron (Disguised as Annatar lord of gifts) forged the Seven rings for the dwarf lords and nine rings for mortal men. Celebrimbor made three rings for the elves. Sauron then forged the one ring of power in Mordor. Sauron put on this ring, but the elves whore the rings realized his intention and hid the rings in Celebrimbor's kingdom of Eregion. Sauron declared war on the elves and sacked Eregion, taking the seven rings of the dwarfs and the nine rings for men. This is where an ancient lord of men comes in. Although it is unknown who his identity was before he became the Witch-king, we can guess he was one of the Numenorean lords that were given rings. They were the most powerful men and as the Witch-king was the most powerful of the Nazgul we can make this assumption. Anyway, they became powerful lords of their race and gathered great riches and brought prosperity to their kingdoms. However, their lives became stretched as they lived longer and longer, until they became shadows of their form or selves. The where now slaves of the ring and Sauron. He was known as the lord of the Nazgûl for the rest of the second age. He commanded Sauron's armies in the war of the last alliance. When his master was defeated and the ring was cut from his finger, the Witch-king no longer was able to have a physical presence in the world.

The Angmar wars[]

But slowly the presence of his master returned to Middle Earth, for the ring was not fully destroyed. After Sauron was able to return to his ancient fortress of Dol Guldur, the Witch-king's spirit returned to Middle earth. He was sent to the kingdom of Arnor (Gondor's sister state) to destroy the kingdom. He set up the kingdom of Angmar in the far eastren regions of Arnor. He quickly went to war against the 3 warring kingdoms of Arnor. He ruled the war from his capital of Carn Dûm. He was given the name of the Witch King of Angmar. He first invaded the kingdom of Rhudaur and set up a puppet leader to fight for him. In the battle for Rhudaur the king of Arthedain was killed defending the kingdom. They then assaulted the watchtower of Amon Sûl (Weathertop) and burned the tower. The next king of Arthedain (King Arveleg) was killed in the battle. They then invaded the kingdom of Cardolan and conquered it. There was now only the kingdom of Arthedain to oppose the king of Agmar. They finally launched a large invasion of Arthedain, and almost succeeded, but they were stopped by the elves of Lindon and Rivendell. The Battles stopped for a while, as Angmar had been defeated and could not take Arthedain, and the men could not take Angmar. But the Witch-king could not die and he would continue the war soon soon enough, spelling doom for the northern kingdom and destroying all resistance.

The final defeat of Arthedain[]

First, he sent evil spirits to the Barrow-downs in Cardolan in order to prevent the rebirth of that kingdom. He then launched a final invasion of Arthedain fights all the way to the capital of Fornost Erain. After a short battle he took the city and the final kingdom of Arnor was destroyed. To further his victory the last king of Arthedain (Arvedui Last-King) drowned in the Icebay of Forochel, and the last remnants of Arnor were lost with him. The Witch-king made the city of Fornost his new capital, and ruled his new empire. This would not last long though, as the kingdom of Gondor leads a massive force to assault the Witch King. They were joined by the forces of the elves of Lindon. Then they begin to march to Fornost. Along the way they recruited any members of Arthedain that wanted to fight to reclaim their homeland. This massive host would not have defeated. They would avenge the lost kingdom. They would win.

The defeat of Angmar[]

The battle began just outside of Fornost, with the host of Gondor splitting into two armies. One would be the main force that would engage the forces of Angmar. The other force would be a unit of Caverly that rode up the hills of Evendim to wait in ambush. The main force of men and elves would engage the forces of Angmar on the plain. At a critical moment in the battle the Gondoian cavalry rode down from the hills and turned the battle in favor of the men and elves. The gained a decisive advantage and the Witch-king's forces were completely crushed. The Witch-king, knowing that his forces had been completely defeated, attempted to retreat back to the east. But a second Elven army from Rivendell led by Glorfindel came up out of the south and blocked his escape. He was trapped between the Gondorian host and Glordindel's army. They destroyed what was left of his army, and he was compelled defeated. As a last attempt to change the fait of the battle, he revealed himself to the host and challenged the King of Gondor (Eärnur) to a duel. As the fight began Eärnur's horse bucked as it was overwhelmed by the fear of the Nazgul lord. The Witch-king laughed at him and prepared to kill him. But suddenly Glorfindel rode up and confronted the Witch-king. The Witch-king, knowing that he couldn't defeat Glorfindel, retreated. As he retreated, Eärnur attempted to follow him, hoping to regain his honor and kill him. However, at that moment, Glofindel issued the famous prophecy "Do not pursue him! He will not return to these lands. Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of man shall he fall." And so without the Witch-king Angmar collapsed and was ended. But Even though the Witch-king was beaten, he had destroyed the kingdom of Arnor, and it would never recover until the days of Aragorn II.

The fall of Minas Ithil and the Kings of Gondor.[]

After Angmar fell, he returned to Mordor after centuries in the northern regions of Middle earth. While Sauron dwelt at Dol Guldur, the Nazgul rallied around the Witch-king. They all worked together to build massive forces of orcs in Mordor. After raising a massive army, they attacked Gondor. Gondor was severely weakened from the great plague and the Wainriders and they were in no place to defend against an attack. They attacked Minas Ithil and then laid siege to the city. The city held out for two years against the Nazgul. Finally the city fell and the city was captured. The city was renamed Minas Morgul. Later King Eärnil II of Gondor passed away and his son Eärnur, the Witch-king's old foe from the battle of Fornost, took the throne. The Witch-king challenged him to a duel. He refused under the council of his steward. However, seven years later, Eärnur was challenged again. This time he accepted. He rode with a small force to Minas Morgul. He entered the gates and was never seen again. The reign of the kings of Gondor failed that day, and the stewards would take the rulership from then until the coming Aragorn II.

The hunt for the ring[]

And so the Kings of Gondor failed and the greatest enemy of Mordor was weakened. Four hundred years after the death of King Eärnur, the lord of Minas Morgul lead an attack on Gondor's former capital Osgiliath and seized its eastern half. The great bridge that once linked the city was destroyed, and the city was ruined. Soon after the creature Gollum was captured, and out of him, they gained valuable information about where the ring layed. Sauron (Now returned to Mordor) sent three of the Nazgul to hold Dul Guldur. The rest, he sent out to attempt to locate the one ring of power for Sauron. This group (Led by the Witch-king) made there first stop at Isengard and asked Saruman were the Shire was, as that was were Gollum said Bilbo Baggins lived. By chance, the Witch-king encountered Grima wormtounge in Rohan. In fear for his life, Grima wormtounge told him where the Shire was, and the rest of the nine Nazgul were sent to join the Witch-king. They all then went towards the Shire, disguised as black riders, to find the ring.

The raid on buckland and the battle of Weathertop[]

The Nazgul tracked the hobbits all the way to Buckland and raided the houses. But Frodo had already left. The Nazgul reached Bree the night Frodo arrived. They attacked the inn the were staying in. However, with the help of Aragorn, the Nazgul could not enter the inn. In the morning, Frodo, Merry, Pippen, Sam, and now Aragorn went through Midgewater Marshes. That night they stayed in the Marchs. In the distance they say fire and lighting in the distance. This was the Nazgul fighting Gandalf. After the trek through the Marshes, they stayed on top of Whethertop. That night they slept on Weathertop. The Witch-king led four Nazgul to attack Weathertop. For the first time in 1600 years he returned to the ancient fortress of Amon Sûl. The Nazgul attacked the party in the dead of night and fighting broke out. Frodo, facing an unimaginable temptation to put on the ring, slips it onto his finger, and the Witch-king stabs him. Frodo is severely injured and his soul begins to be corrupted. The Nazgul chased Frodo and his company towards Rivendell. However the Witch-king was confronted by Glorfindel. Glorfindel than helped Frodo to escape towards Rivendell. Lord Elrond lures the Ringwraiths into the river Bruinen. Elrond then released a giant flood, with Gandalf makes the waves look like horses. The Ringwraiths physical form is destroyed and they are sent back to Sauron.

The war of the ring[]

Thier lord Sauron called the Nazgul back to him in Mordor and gave them new mounts to search for the ring. However the Witch-king went back to Minas Morgul and prepared his forces for the final attack on Gondor. As Frodo, Sam, And Gollum made there way towrds the secret stairs, the Lord of the Nazgul senced them and almost found Frodo. If he has the quest would have surely failed. However Frodo grabbed the Phial of Galadriel and held it, making the Witch-king lose his focas. After this encounter he led his massive orc army to Osgilitath and assulted the city one last time. Faramir's forces fought bravely, but they were no match for the flying Nazgul or the forces of Gothmog (The chief of his orcs) and they were forced to retreat, losing many while taking this action. The army of the Witch-king than fought Faramir agin at the Rammas Echor, defeting him and strickning him with the Black breath. They then marched unopposed into the Pelenor fields and began the siege of Gondor. Using his sorcery he made the battering ram Grond shatter the gates of Minas truth. He rode in on his black horse, spreading terror among the ranks of the Gondorians. He was only opposed by Gandalf the White. Then suddenly he heard the horns of the Rohirrim and he left to face this new threat.

The Fall of the Witch-king[]

As the Rohirrim charged and the battle turned in the side of the Gondor, the Witch-king rode on his fellbeast and commanded his leigons to stand and fight. This worked to some degree and the charge was slowed. Than than Mamukils came and blunted the charge all togther. As the battle begun to go ill on the side of good, he seeked out king Theoden. He found him and landed in fron of him, causing the nearby horces to buck with terror and the riders to rtreat. King theodens horce, Snowmane, crushes him underneth its body, and than King Theoden is mortly wounded. As his Fellbeast prepares to eat the body of the dieing king, Eowyn niece of King Theoden steps up with Merry to engage the Witch-king. The diolouge goes as follows:

Éowyn: Be gone, foul dwimmerlaik, lord of carrion! Leave the dead in peace!

The Witch-king: Come not between the Nazgûl and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shriveled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye.

Éowyn: Do what you will, but I will hinder it, if I may.

The Witch-king: Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!

Éowyn: But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Be gone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him.

Eowyn than cut the head off his fellbeast and the creature collapsed to the ground. The Witch-king arose and with one strike of his mace Eowyn's arm was broken under her shield. She fell to the ground, and as she prepared to die Merry stabbed the Witch-king with a Barrow blade. This blade was made to counter the Witch-king and was made by the ancient men of Arnor. He screamed in pain as the blade stabbed through his leg and the sinew of his knee, breaking the spell binding his undead flesh to his will. As he kneeled on the ground, Eowyn with her last bit of strength, drove her weapon into the space where his head should have been. And thus he died. The prophecy made by Glorfindel at the Battle of Fornost so many centuries before had thus come to pass. For not by the hand of man had he failed, but by those of a hobbit and a woman.

Weapons And Armor[]

  • Sword of terror: In the movies and books, the Witch-king has a presumably magic broadsword that he can light on fire on command. It's his main weapon and one of his strongest to. It causes fear in his opponents and makes even the strongest warrior quake with fear. It seems to be used mainly to cause intimidation, but could probably also be used in combat.
  • The Witch-king's mace: The Witch-king wields a large deadly mace that can kill opponents in one swing and break shields. It's strong enough with him that he broke Eoywn's shield and arm in one swing.
  • The Witch-king's flail: In the movie the Witch-king wields a massive flail instead of a mace. It serves much of the same purpose except it has increased range.
  • Morgul-knife: Perhaps the Witch-king's strongest weapon is the Morgul-Knife. If an opponent is stabbed than a shard of it will break off into the wound of the opponent and the rest will turn to dust. The shard will slowly make its way to the opponent's heart and if it remains in the body too long it will turn the person stabbed into a wraith under the control of the Witch-king and by proxy Sauron. The effects can be slowed by Athelas (AKA Kingsfoil) but the effect can only be stopped by Elven magic.
  • The Witch-king's Armor: The Witch-king has a full body suit of armor that is most likely made of steel. He also has his famous helmet which is very intimidating and raises his stature. His armor has at least the durability of regular armor, but probably is enchanted. His armor seems immune from all weapons except the magic barrow-blade that was designed and cursed to hurt him.

Powers and abilities[]

  • The black breath: The black breath is a aura of fear around the Witch-king that can make even the most bravehearted person quail. If used on a person at close contact it can put them into a state of unconsinous that they will rarly ever wake from. Serious cases can only be cured by Athelas being applyed by the kings hand.
  • Weapon immunity: Any weapon that came in contact with the Witch-king would immediately shatter into pieces and be completely destroyed. He is only hurt by Eoywn because he is stabbed by Merry's Borrow-blade, which is made pacifically to cut his soul from his body.
  • Weapon poison: Anyone who stabs the Witch-king is poisoned and dies under most circumstances, unless of course, you have the hands of the king with Athelas.
  • Telekinesis: He breaks Frodo's blade on Weathertop with a wave of his hand or when he breaks Gandalf's staff in the Movies.
  • Spell usage: He made the gates of Minas truth extremely weak and made grond stronger
  • Lightning Control: He made the gates of Minas Terith explode with lightning
  • Immortality: He can't be killed as long as Sauron still exists.
  • Self-Sustenance: He can go without rest or sleep forever.
  • Nazgul shriek: A horrific wailing sound to make people feel overwhelming pain and despair
  • Weather control: He created a storm that sank the boat of the last king of Arnor

Allies[]

The Witch-king can summon the other 8 Ringwraiths to his command. He rides a fell beast that allows him to fly. He controls the forces of Minas Morgul.
