JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure vs Demon Slayer! Thrust into the life of a monster-slayer by the transformation of their siblings and decimation of their homes, these kind-hearted swordsmen journeyed to hunt down the monsters responsible, but which one will draw their final breath?
Interlude[]
Wiz: The act of breathing is more than just a simple reflex of the human body; it stands as a sign of life, focuses the mind itself, and in the case of some people, may allow them to tap into abilities that push them far beyond what most are capable of. For these two, it serves as a method of protecting the innocent from the bloodthirsty creatures of the night.
Boomstick: Both swordsmen are shining examples of kindness even in battle and proficient in their ability to weaponize their own breath, but only one can come out alive. With their stories and lives having ended, it's time to see which of these two will be left breathless.
Wiz: Jonathan Joestar, the Hamon-wielding progenitor of the Joestar bloodline.
Boomstick: And Tanjiro Kamado, the Child of Brightness and Sun-Breathing Demon Slayer. He’s Wiz and I’m Boomstick!
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armour and skills, to find out who would win... a Death Battle.
Jonathan Joestar[]
Wiz: The Joestar family. A bloodline that’s spanned generations of wealth, misfortune, attitude, and far too many absolutely bizarre events, and people. But to truly understand where the story began, we must travel back to 1868, during one stormy night in Victorian England. Travelling by carriage, the patriarch of the family, George Joestar I, and his wife, Mary Joestar, were involved in an accident which led to a disastrous fate. Their carriage fell down a cliff and Mary gave her life protecting their newborn son, Jonathan Joestar.
Boomstick: But you can just call him JoJo! Anyway, they were found by the lowlife Dario Brando, who attempted to rob the couple, but ended up saving George’s life. Seeing this misunderstanding, George vowed to repay Dario for “saving” his life, and this would come back to bite their entire bloodline in the ass. HARD. But not yet. For now George focused on raising his son right, and to be a proper and respectful gentleman. A true noble and successor of their bloodline, and at the age of 12, young JoJo would be forced to deal with the son of the recently deceased Dario, Dio Brando, who was adopted as his brother. Yep, just take in quite possibly the greatest asshole in all of anime. Fantastic work, George!
Wiz: Dio was quick to assert his dominance, making Jonathan’s life a living hell. Regularly beating him up, stealing his friends and badmouthing him, outperforming him in their studies and showing better manners, he quickly won over George and made Jonathan look terrible, all in an attempt to psychologically break Jonathan and inherit the Joestar fortune. But despite all this, Jonathan was able to find happiness in the company of a local girl named Erina Pendleton, and the two would become childhood sweethearts. So, as you could imagine, seeing Jonathan having any modicum of happiness in his life, Dio was dead set on ruining it, and in turn stole Erina’s first kiss, dishonouring her and their relationship.
Boomstick: And once Jonathan found out, you can bet he was hella pissed! He ran straight home, jumped straight over their fountain and beat the shit out of Dio! Now that’s what I’m talking about! Some righteous justice. And in their brawl, Dio’s blood would fall onto a curious stone mask that belonged to Jonathan’s mother, but before things could progress, George stopped their fight and sent them to their rooms. Dio would get the last blow in though, trapping Jonathan’s dog Danny in a box and putting him in the furnace, burning him alive. That bastard!
Popup: Being the true gentleman that he is, Jonathan got accustomed to gentlemanly sports such as boxing at a fairly young age, being competent enough to become a popular and famous figure in his local circles. As well as being an extremely proficient rugby player in his university years, able to power through four rugby players tackling him all at once. No doubt thanks to his massive stature.
Wiz: But from there on out, Jonathan and Dio would be on false good terms, keeping up friendly appearances, but hating each other in secret. Even so, nothing happened between the two, and they attended university together, each receiving top marks in their respective fields; Law for Dio, and Archaeology for Jonathan. He even published a celebrated thesis by the age of 20, and was well on his way to uncovering the secrets of his mother’s strange stone mask, so things were looking up! But alas, all good things must come to an end. Jonathan’s father had fallen ill, and Jonathan was quick to discover that Dio was taking their father his medicine, and was poisoning him. All he needed was concrete proof.
Boomstick: So he travelled to the most treacherous street in all of London; Beatdown Boulevard. Ah, I mean, uh, Ogre Street. Lamer name, but still the toughest street in town. And there, he’d find the apothecary who sold Dio the poison, only after getting into a fight with a local gang and impressing their leader, Robert E.O. Speedwagon, to the point of utter respect and admiration in his noble and gentlemanly spirit. So, new best friend and the apothecary in-hand, Jonathan went back to the manor and confronted Dio, with the local police to back him up if necessary.
Wiz: Having his plans to poison George and steal their fortune exposed, Dio was ready to murder Jonathan with the stone mask, but after a chance encounter in town, he’d seen the strange power it could grant those who wore it and made it react with fresh blood. So Dio, cornered and with nothing to lose, attempted to stab Jonathan, but George got in the way at the last second, saving his son from a cruel fate as Dio used their father’s blood to activate the mask and transform into a vampire. Dio slaughtered the policemen with his newfound strength, and nearly Jonathan as well, though the gentlemanly JoJo narrowly defeated Dio by burning him alive in their mansion, sustaining grave injuries in the process.
Boomstick: But he survived! And was nursed back to health with the love and care of his grown-up love, Erina. Unfortunately for everyone involved, Dio survived as well, and was gathering his strength and building a zombie army to rule the world with. But to defeat Dio once more, Jonathan would need more than just his righteous fists and fiery passion. He’d need a creepy floating Italian man who punches frogs with the power of the sun: William Antonio Zepelli. Zepelli was an experienced practitioner of Hamon, an ancient martial art designed specifically to do battle against vampires like Dio.
Popup: The use of Hamon is performed through a fighting style called Sendo, meaning Way of the Hermit. While anybody can technically produce Hamon, only one in ten thousand have the ability to effectively use it in practice. Most notably those who have lived through great tragedies and persevered. Talent in the art is also passed through one’s bloodline, which is how Joseph Joestar had a natural affinity for Hamon, despite a lack of proficiency.
Wiz: Alternatively known as Ripple, Hamon is an energy identical to that of the rays of the Sun that is harnessed through respiration, which manifests as soothing ripples throughout the body and enhances the user’s physical abilities. This is the very stuff used for hunting the undead, and is fatal to the likes of Vampires, Zombies, and even Pillar Men. It requires precise breathing and willpower in order to utilize it properly, but it can practically make anything into an effective weapon for combat, and delays the onset of various bodily functions, such as hunger and the need for urination. And Jonathan’s most iconic use of Hamon is through his Overdrives.
Boomstick: A fighting style Jonathan developed as a result of his Hamon training, this style involves attacks where Jonathan imbues his limbs with Hamon, literally giving himself the power of the Sun in the palm of his hands. As a result, he can easily kill vampires just by punching the living daylights into them. However, Jonathan can also choose to transfer his Hamon energy through walls or weapons whenever he pleases. A concept which he turns into an attack with Sendo Hamon Overdrive, punching whatever object his opponent is using to shield themselves and attacking them with Hamon through it. He does the same with Metal Silver Overdrive, transferring his Hamon through metal like electricity.
Wiz: By charging Hamon energy into a single concentrated point, Jonathan can create literal fire based on Hamon energy that he can transfer to any part of his body, aptly named his Scarlet Overdrive. And just like actual fire, touching it or getting touched by it will result in someone or something getting burned. And at the opposite end of the spectrum, he can utilise his Turquoise Blue Overdrive by conducting Hamon through the water and sending thrusts of Hamon infused water to blast his foes away. He can even use the faint magnetic traces of objects to stick them together, and them to himself, with his Life Magnetism Overdrive.
Boomstick: And when Jonathan needs to deliver a bunch of rapid-fire punches, he delivers a flurry of Hamon-enhanced punches with his Overdrive Barrage. But his strongest and most iconic technique is without a doubt his Sunlight Yellow Overdrive! Unleashing a barrage of Overdrive punches imbued with the energies of the Sun, it disintegrates any vampires or zombies unfortunate enough to be hit with it. And damn does he have an epic chant to go along with it! But his Hamon isn’t only useful for his Overdrives. Jonathan’s got a whole bunch of abilities he can use, both inherent to Hamon use and learnt from good old Zepelli.
Popup: In the 2007 Phantom Blood movie, Will A. Zepelli and Tonpetty share a handshake which disperses all the surrounding clouds on the mountain they stood on. The energy required for such a feat comes out to 202.5 Kilotons of TNT, and as one of the strongest Hamon users in the series, as well as having received Zepelli’s Hamon, Jonathan should also reasonably scale to this.
Wiz: From the get-go, Jonathan was a natural at Hamon, quickly learning techniques such as the Zoom Punch, where Jonathan dislocates his shoulder and extends the joints in his arm to punch an opponent far away. The Hamon dulls the pain before it snaps back to normal, and then works on healing any potential damage. It’s called miracle energy for a reason, as Hamon is extremely effective in healing oneself or others. With just the residual Hamon in his body, Jonathan was able to revive a dead flower with a touch, and after his training with Zepelli, could remove the pain of his broken arm, mend his broken neck, and force poisons out of his body.
Boomstick: Additionally, It allows for great control over the body. Similar to other Hamon users such as Dire, Jonathan has mastered such a great amount of body control to be able to cast afterimages with his movements. Also, by sending Hamon through someone’s mind, Jonathan is able to control the movement of their body, like when he used Hamon on Wang Chen, causing him to forcefully hold onto the ship’s screw shaft or causing Dobbie’s snakes to devour their master. Plus, Hamon can directly shut off a person’s brain or heart if it makes contact, something other Hamon users have done to ordinary humans with a single zap.
Wiz: It can also be used for walking on water; done by repelling the water beneath oneself like the same poles on a magnet. While Jonathan was never as advanced as Zepelli at it, he was still adequate. While on the topic of water, Jonathan can use Hamon to detect the vibrations of life by transferring Hamon through a liquid, passing through his body and into the environment. Another most curious skill, Hamon has the ability to restore the humanity of a zombified opponent as seen with Bruford, as well as rejecting zombification extract and releasing people from vampiric hypnosis.
Boomstick: But perhaps Jonathan’s greatest ability is his sheer tenacity. Dio said it best himself; bloody his nose and he comes back twice as fierce. His unrivalled willpower has allowed him to overcome the various struggles and challenges that faced him, even when faced with nearly unwinnable odds. This is only backed up by his wit and quick thinking, which have gotten him out of plenty of life or death situations, using everything available to his advantage, cementing his combat strategy skills. Whether it be developing new strategies in the heat of battle or turning an opponent’s strengths against them, Jonathan is an extremely intelligent and resourceful fighter who cannot be underestimated.
Popup: According to an interview with Hirohiko Araki, the creator of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Jonathan's name was inspired by a family restaurant, "Jonathan's", at which he and his editor would frequently meet late at night to discuss ideas. Additionally, the characterisation and appearance of Jonathan was inspired by Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star’s main protagonist, Kenshiro.
Wiz: Jonathan would need all of these skills and abilities as he, Speedwagon, and Zepelli set out to end Dio’s tyrannical reign, invading his domain and waging war against his army of bloodthirsty zombies. Including Jack the Ripper and a knight duo who fought in service to Mary, Queen of Scots; Tarkus and Bruford. The latter of whom would challenge Jonathan in battle, testing his drive and capability as a warrior. Eventually, Jonathan would best the dread knight, restoring his human soul with his Hamon and refusing to fight once he knew Bruford had been brought back to his senses. Defeated by such an honourable warrior, he offered Jonathan his sword, gifted to him by Queen Mary, as a sign of respect and honour.
Boomstick: With Bruford’s remaining blood before his death, he wrote a “P” beside the “LUCK” engraved onto the sword, thus changing the name to “PLUCK”. Taking up the knight’s blade, Jonathan would use the sword in the fight against Dio’s minions, able to conduct Hamon through the blade and slice through the undead like a hot knife through butter. But Tarkus would prove more difficult to defeat, which is very fair, given that this monster of a man could lift massive boulders with one finger and split apart cliffs. A feat worth 1.4 tons of TNT! And JoJo would be trapped in a collared deathmatch against him, chained to the ceiling as he fought for his life with a broken neck.
Wiz: Zepelli would end up giving his life to ensure Jonathan defeated Tarkus, gifting him all of his Hamon and allowing Jonathan to heal his injuries and snap the collar that not even Tarkus could break. With their combined energies, Jonathan was strong enough to slice Tarkus in half with only his Hamon-charged hand. Which only left Dio. Thankfully, Jonathan would be joined by steadfast allies, who fought alongside him against Dio at the top of his castle at Windknight’s Lot. Through a hard-fought battle, Jonathan was able to overcome Dio’s vampiric freezing powers, and punching a hole straight through Dio’s chest! Which is made all the more impressive given that Dio was able to fight Stands like Star Platinum.
Boomstick: Who’s even stronger than the Stand Stone Free, which could punch meteors at a force of around 441 Kilotons of TNT! And Dio was able to do all this while weaker than his state during the events of Phantom Blood. With the muscular physique they have, there’s no question JoJo is as strong as his adopted brother. And Jonathan’s an absolute tank! He’s taken a spear to his shoulder, survived having his neck snapped and having Speedwagon’s Buzzsaw hat cut through his arm to the bone, smashed through a stone wall, could still grab onto Dio after having his arms and bones broken by him, while on fire, and survived a 64 ton boat explosion unscathed!
Popup: Jonathan was already dead by the time the ship had exploded, but his corpse did not suffer any damage. Soon after, Dio would put his head onto Jonathan’s body, surviving within a coffin for 100 years at the bottom of the ocean before being pulled out before the events of Stardust Crusaders. Dio would use Jonathan’s body to father four children; Giorno, Ungalo, Donatello and Rikiel, as well as fight the Stardust Crusaders, despite Jonathan’s body rejecting him and causing him to be weaker than during the events of Phantom Blood.
Wiz: Yet despite his massive build, Jonathan’s also extremely quick. He’s fast enough to create afterimages, could dodge Adam’s speed, and was able to intercept Dio and Zepelli before either could notice. A feat requiring JoJo to move 16.8 times the speed of sound to pull off. Which is even more impressive, given that Zepelli could move faster than the eye could track and dodged fragments that moved as fast as an explosion, which would call for a reaction speed of 379.5 times the speed of sound. Even inexperienced Hamon users like Joseph could dodge beams of light from the Red Stone of Aja, and Jonathan himself could dodge Dio’s Space Ripper Stingy Eyes, which move at Supersonic speeds!
Boomstick: Despite Jonathan’s overwhelming strength and versatility with Hamon, he is not without his own fair share of weaknesses. Any sort of disruption to his breathing can prevent the circulation of Hamon in his body, leaving him unable to utilize it. This also applies if Jonathan loses too much blood or if his blood can't pass through his body due to being frozen. He also can only channel Hamon through his hands and feet, which is a problem if he’s bound or tied up. And Jonathan is still only human, which means he's unable to regenerate anything beyond minor injuries or broken bones.
Wiz: Defeating Dio and ending his reign of terror at Windknight’s Lot, Jonathan married Erina soon after, setting out on a honeymoon to America. But like all good things in his life, it too was ruined by Dio, who’d survived their encounter by severing his head before the Hamon could get to it. Dio, despite his hatred, had gained respect for Jonathan, and decided he must steal his body, as he felt that it was the only worthy body he could take. Dio fatally wounded Jonathan, but the gentlemanly JoJo used the last of his Hamon to cause the ship they were in to explode, embracing Dio as Erina hid in an explosion-proof coffin and the brothers were engulfed in the ensuing explosion… Even though Dio didn’t quite die.
Boomstick: Thankfully, Erina survived, carrying a child she had saved from the explosion, and pregnant with Jonathan’s son. But Jonathan’s sacrifice was not in vain. His bloodline would continue throughout the ages, spawning a line of illustrious and bizarre heroes who would crush Dio's plan, and save the world. An honourable gentleman who suffered through tragedy to the very end, the actions of Jonathan Joestar had an everlasting impact, inspiring the future heroes who would all share his name: JoJo!
