Doctor Alec Holland was a scientist stationed at a laboratory complex in the Louisiana bayou to the world of a plant growth formula for the intended purpose of ending world hunger. But Anton Arcane, an occultist and mad scientist desiring to have the formula to gain immortality, has his henchmen leave Holland to die after rigging his lab to explode. Holland, who was covered in flames from his own growth formula, dove into the into the muck-filled swamp and is assumed dead. But a short while later, Holland's formula caused a green humanoid plantlike creature to emerge. Possessing Holland's memories and reincarnated soul, this creature comes to be known as Arcane's nemesis and champion of the plant world against all threat natural and supernatural: Swamp Thing.
