History[]
Natsuki Subaru is the main protagonist of the Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu. He was a shut-in hikikomori who was sent to a fantasy world. As a child, Subaru always idolized his father, and always felt the pressure of having to live up to being his father's son, his father was very friendly and well-liked by everyone. In grade school, Subaru was the fastest in his class and the smartest and was always the one, who would always be trying new things to get attention, he noticed that as his acts to get attention got more extreme, more and more of his friends left him.
As he grew older, he was no longer the fastest or the smartest, and eventually, he had no friends. Still feeling pressure from being his father's son he tried to reinvent himself in high school, however that failed as he tried to imitate his father's eccentric behavior, which he always showed around him, however, he didn't know at the time that not even his father acted that way around other people. Because of this, he made a complete fool of himself on his high school debut, and slowly, he felt anxious when going to school. He started skipping school, once a week became twice a week until eventually, he stopped going to school altogether. Every day when it was time for school, he always felt anxious, he wanted his parents to disown him for being a failure of a son, but they never did.
After being summoned to a new world, he saw this as a chance to make a fresh start. Exploring this world he met a beautiful half elf girl named Emilia and decided to assist her in her quest. However, Subaru didn't change as a person and failed, being murdered along with Emilia by the assassin Elsa Granhiert. After his death Subaru suddenly found himself returned to the exact time and place that he arrived in this new world. Realizing he now possessed an ability he named "Return by Death", which allows Subaru to return to an unspecified "save point" in the past whenever he dies. He decided that he would use this new power to save Emilia and, though he succeeded, was eventually exposed for what he was- a person forcing their feelings on someone else, and that his white-knighting doesn't work out in the real world. He thought of himself as the hero of his own story, but was faced with reality when he didn't have the OP powers of a usual protagonist, he however chose to ignore that he wasn't the hero and that the world would go on with or without him and tried to force his way into Emilia's affairs, and in the process made a complete fool of himself.
Subaru continued to travel with Emilia and suffered through multiple deaths, facing tragedy after tragedy, gaining new friends and allies only to lose them, the world proceeding to show him how weak he was, and that he couldn't save anyone. After being utterly broken, he wanted to run away but was however stopped by Rem. This became the turning point for his character; he truly made an effort to change himself rather than expect that as the supposed protagonist, everything would work out, which it didn't before as he had to watch the results of his failures and see the people he cared for die over and over again. Subaru indeed became a changed character, and he tries to live up to the expectations of a hero that Rem had for him. Going as far to be given the privilege of becoming Emilia's knight and subsequently becoming an important figure in the Dragon Kingdom of Lugunica.

- Return by Death: An ability which returns the user to an unspecified, unpredictable and uncontrollable "save point" after their death. It activates instantly after their life is taken, there's no lag between the point of death and the point of resurrection, and there is no known limit to how many times they can return. This ability allows Subaru a near endless amount of second chances as he can recall the events of previous loops he had died in, inherently knowing what will happen and the rough actions the people around him will take, almost like a form of precognition. As he usually tries to do different things every time he returned to life, Subaru is able to gather more intel on how his allies and opponents behave under specific conditions, allowing him to predict their movements and plan strategies accordingly. Subaru is not allowed to reveal this ability to anyone and there are penalties for attempting to do so or if anyone is to find out about it. Usually when he tries to speak about it Satella forcibly silences him by grasping his heart, if Subaru attempts to reveal his ability irrespective of this penalty she will find another appropriate punishment, such as when she killed Emilia when Subaru was dead set on telling her. If anyone is to discover the ability on their own Satella will appear herself in order to rectify it, such as when she attacked Pleiades Watchtower when Rui gained knowledge of the ability by eating Subaru's memories, note that simply knowing that Subaru can redo through some means unknown will not trigger this penalty, such is the case with Roswaal. - Witch Factors: The Witch Factors were a set of nine mysterious seeds of power each relating to one of the seven deadly sins (plus the additional sins of vanity and melancholy). Since his arrival in Lugunica, Subaru has coalesced three Witch Factors into his body—Sloth, Greed, and a third Authority of unknown sin-affiliation:
- Invisible Providence: The Authority of Sloth, formerly called the Unseen Hand, gives Subaru the ability to summon invisible hand-like appendages from his chest that he could move and extend telekinetically. One of these hands was strong enough to tear through flesh, bend and brake bones, and shatter rock. If Natsuki focused enough, he could make the tendrils of Invisible Providence phase through matter as though it wasn't there. He acquired this ability after killing Betelgeuse. However, he is only able to control two hands.
- Cor Leonis: An inverse form of Regulus' "Lion Heart" which Subaru obtained in Arc 6. As such, it works inversely to how the Small King does, in which Subaru takes on the burdens of others, either physical or mental, and transfers them to himself temporarily in exchange for an increase in his combat abilities. It seems that it only works on people who Subaru has a strong emotional connection, whom he can perceive through points of light when the Authority is active. Subaru can use it to derive the relative location of other people and their emotional states.
- Spirit User: Subaru is contracted with the Artificial Spirit Beatrice which allows him to be able to use two magics while she's active:
- E・M・M (エミリアたんマジ女神 Emiria-tan Maji Megami, "Emilia-tan is Seriously a Goddess"): Using Yin Magic, Beatrice interferes with the space-time around Subaru, and while he can't move during activation, he experiences no interference from outside the barrier. It is similar to the Authority of Greed but doesn't have the same risk, and can be used until mana runs out.
- E・M・T (エミリアたんマジ天使 Emiria-tan Maji Tenshi, "Emilia-tan is Seriously an Angel"): Beatrice creates a spherical field several ten meters long with herself and Subaru at the center which negates the effects from mana within it. It is absolute negation magic which is useful against mages and those who use mana to assist their techniques; however, the spell only negates the use of mana, so it has no effect against opponents who fight without it.
- Non-Stop Abyss (ノンストップ・アビス): Non-Stop Abyss made its debut in the non-canon Isekai Quartet Movie. Likely using Beatrice's Door Crossing magic, this combination technique connects a miniature handheld door to a much larger door. By using this technique, Subaru and Beatrice can move someone from the smaller to the larger to quickly transport them from point A to point B. Even if the opponent is considerably larger than the mini door, it can still absorb them and teleport them to the other.
- Cocytus (コキュートス, Kokyūtosu): Cocytus is a large scale spell made out of two combined elements, which was used by Subaru and Emilia during their fight against the Oousagi. While Subaru used Yin Magic to form some sort of a barricade around the Demon Beasts to prevent them from escaping, Emilia used Fire Magic to carefully apply magical energy to the already-casted Minya spell, creating an icy cage and lifting the cage, the Demon Beasts and the ground itself high in the air.
- Sword Skills: He did kendo in middle school for a bit, so he has some basics in swordsmanship. After his humiliating defeat at the hands of Julius, Subaru received some rough sword training, under Wilhelm van Astrea at the Karsten mansion, Subaru unlocked a basic grasp on swordsmanship that was helped by the kendo he did when he was younger. However, it should be mentioned that despite the combative skills Subaru picked up from his time in Japan as well as his time in the other world, he was still a low-level combatant overall who would lose to almost every opponent he faced in terms of battle power as he's completely talentless with a blade and is unable to hold his own against anyone who's at least fairly skilled with a sword.
- Minya (ミーニャ): Subaru can create stakes made of crystallized mana covered with light purple flames as an offensive attack via Spirit Arts. They are strong enough to penetrate defences. Any stakes in the air explode and release smaller stakes that fly in all directions which then rips targets apart.
- El Minya (エル・ミーニャ): The spell works very similar to normal Minya. The only difference is the number of stakes, which increase to around 40.
- Murak (ムラク): Subaru reduces the effects of gravity. Just by jumping lightly, a person can jump as if they had springs. If Subaru wishes to, it can also be used to fly, although Subaru will get blown around by the wind like a leaf, but they won't flip around in midair.

- Natsuki means "vegetables, greens" (菜) (na) and "moon" (月) (tsuki).
- Subaru means "Pleiades" (昴). In astronomy, "Subaru" is the Japanese name for the constellation Pleiades. Of which, seven stars in the constellation are named after the Seven Sisters, the daughters of Atlas and Pleione in classical mythology.
- Due to his name being related to a constellation, Subaru used to have a love and obsession over them, thus having vast knowledge of Earth's stars.
- Subaru has been ranked among the five weakest characters in Re:Zero.
- Subaru is surprisingly talented at sewing. In the later arcs, his skill improves to the point where he can even make stuffed toys.
