Description[]
Mortal Kombat vs Shovel Knight! Half Undead, half ninja. All badass. But which one of these undead specters will continue on their quest and which one will return to Hell once more?
Introduction[]
Wiz: Scorpion, the burning specter of vengeance.
Boomstick: Specter Knight, the reaper of the Lich Yard.
Wiz: Unrelenting, tireless, nigh-unstoppable. These words match what an undead monster are capable of.
Boomstick: And when you slap on the fact that they're badass ninjas like these two, may God help you. He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick!
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor and skill, to see who would win... a Death Battle!
Scorpion[]
(Cue: Mortal Kombat (2011) - Theme of Scorpion by Shinrei) (0:53)
Wiz: Born into the Shirai Ryu, Hanzo Hasashi was destined to be doomed in an endless cycle of pain and misery. But before being trapped in said cycle, Hanzo was not only the Grand Master of his clan, but also a husband and a father.
Boomstick: That's when Shang Tsung's Echo Fighter, Quan Chi, found out a way to get his master's amulet and allow them to mess Earthrealm up. But there was problem, not only was it on a map inside of a Shaolin Temple, which was under the control of his mortal enemies who wish to not have Earth get destroyed, but he would also need to go through the four elemental gods as well.
Wiz: Not wanting to deal the Order of Light and four entire gods, he hired both Hanzo Hasashi and his eternal rival, Sub-Zero, to get the map. And when the two encountered each other once more in the Shaolin Temple, they knew that this fight would be their last.
Boomstick: And seeing as this is called Mythologies: Sub-Zero, you can probably guess what happened to old Hanzo here.
Wiz: But death wasn't the end for him, for while he was in the Netherrealm, Quan Chi gave him a choice: Either stay here in the Netherrealm for all eternity, or be his servant and kill Sub-Zero.
Boomstick: Doing anything to turn the guy who did this to him into fucking ashes, he accepted the deal. While Hanzo died, his codename, Scorpion, was reborn.
Wiz: Keeping his knowledge of his training, Scorpion is master of martial arts, knowing the styles of Hapkido and Pi Gau, knows his away around weapons like swords, axes, and his famous kunai, and is a master of ninjutsu, seeing as he was the clan leader of the Shirai Ryu.
Boomstick: Now add hellfire into the mix and you've gotten yourself a recipe for PAIN! And much like how I would use them if I had those powers, he's very creative with them. You have your simple fire streams and balls, empowering weapons with it, all that jazz. But then you get stuff like teleporting with it, summoning it from below, go all Ghost Rider on a poor fool with a toasty finisher, and can even create HANDS FROM THE GROUND TO DRAG THEIR ASS TO HELL WITH IT!
Wiz: And that's not all he gained with this glow up. He capable of summoning his own minions from the Netherrealm, creating illusionary clones to fool his foes, summon his dead clan to help kill his foes, and can even drag others into the Netherrealm, where he gets stronger the longer he stays in it.
Boomstick: Wow, with all these powers, I wonder how much of a chance Sub-Zero had in their rematch?
Wiz: He didn't.
Boomstick: …Brutal!
Wiz: Scorpion's capable of breaking pure blocks of diamond, much like his fellow combatants, can create pillars of flames powerful enough to kill demons, and is comparable to the likes of Rain, who can create lightning, and Kuai Liang, the original Sub-Zero's younger brother, who's capable of freezing an entire city, being worth at least 968 kilotons of TNT.
(Cue: Shirai Ryu Fire Garden OST | Mortal Kombat 11)
Boomstick: And like Kuai Liang, he should be comparable to the likes of Kotal Kahn, who's capable of redirecting light itself, and has even fought those who've beaten before, like everyone's favorite MK character: D'vorah! But oh man, if Kuai Lang is this good, I wonder how this Sub-Zero stands a chance against Scorpion!
Wiz: Interestingly enough, they've never really fought. Well, they did that one time during Shinnok's return, but besides that, they're pretty allies, if not friends. Heck, in the original timeline, Scorpion wanted to protect the newer Sub-Zero, almost like an act of pence.
Boomstick: "Hey, wait a minute." you might be asking. "You said that they fought during Shinnok's return. Weren't they on good terms?" Well remember Quan Chi? Well he told Scorpion that Kuai Liang killed his family, which may or may not have pissed him off enough to want to beat, as well as maybe murder, the shit out of him.
Wiz: And he succeeded. With the beating him up, not the murder. …But then Quan Chi, for SOME REASON, decided to tell Scorpion the truth. That HE was the one who killed both his family and clan.
Boomstick: …He DID know who he was telling this too, right?
Wiz: I don't know what's more baffling: Him doing that or sending Scorpion back to the Netherrealm, which is also Quan Chi's home realm.
Boomstick: And thanks to that massive fuck up on Quan's end, Scorpion's hate-filled murder boner went from Kuai Liang, to him. Dear god, he's fucked, isn't he?
Wiz: Yep. And thanks to that, Scorpion hunted him to ends of Netherrealm, which led to multiple events happening that eventually led to him becoming a champion of the Elder Gods-
Boomstick: You know, one of the worsts gods you could ever have.
Wiz: -in the exchange of his family and clan being brought back, which they did in the form of specters like himself. And having the same fate he was subjected to towards both his clan and family pissed him off enough to try and kill Taven and Daegon, which would cause the end of all things: Armageddon. Just to spite the Elder Gods.
Boomstick: Damn... Went from family man to Kratos. Hell, even the Arcade endings aren't nice to him. That, alongside knowing his fate in the timeline Raiden made, I wonder if he's ever going to get a happy ending without life kicking his ass?
Wiz: Who knows for sure, Boomstick. Perhaps in Liu Kang's new timeline, he might have that chance. But until he does: Beware his anger. For if you don't, you WILL feel Scorpion's wrath.
Scorpion: "Vengeance will be mine!"
Specter Knight[]
(Cue: Fate Approaches)
Wiz: Sometime ago, two adventures by the name of Donovan and Luan set out to find an amulet of great power, hoping that with it's power, it could protect Luan's child. With blades, caltrops, and a bond so strong that one might mistake them for family, they arrived at the amulet's resting place: The Tower of Fate.
Boomstick: Little did they know that it was one of those evil cursed powerful amulets. Don't worry, they won't live long to deal with the consequences.
Wiz: Climbing up the tower, the amulet was right within their reach. But before they could claim their prize, a lone knight appeared before them, telling them to stop.
Boomstick: This was Shield Knight, and she was there to destroy the amulet once and for all! Pretty nice of her, right? Destroying an evil all-powerful amulet and all. Well, Donovan didn't think so. So after fighting Shield Knight, which caused the room the trio was in to start collapsing, Luan, being reasonable one of the two, told Donovan that they should just cut their losses and leave before they all died and his son became an orphan. Donovan disagreed.
Wiz: In his greed, Donovan struck Luan down. And before he could do the same with Shield Knight, the room finally gave out, with Donovan falling to his death.
Boomstick: But unfortunately for him, someone had other plans.
Wiz: Enter: The Enchantress, a powerful dark sorcerer who saw potential in the now deceased Donovan and give him two choices: Join Luan in the abyss, or serve her as an specter of a knight and help her create an order of knights. Not wanting to die, and wanting to make sure his deceased friend's son is safe, Donovan agreed, transforming him into the dreaded Specter Knight.
(Cue: Hitting Close To Home (Tower Of Fates Entrance) - Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment OST)
Boomstick: Now as the newly resurrected Specter Knight, Donovan was sent out to find his mistress' knights. These knightsAnd in return, she'll turn him back into a real boy. Honestly, it's not that bad of an offer in hindsight.
Wiz: But these knights were no walk in the park, some of these knights were tricky alchemists, brilliant engineers, plunderers of both the sky and sea, and even false kings who fought his way through several trials to get his ill-gotten title, one of said trials included fighting a fusion made of multiple kings that was capable of firing beams of light.
Boomstick: And they all fell to Specter Knight. Skeletons, knights, ghosts, cannon balls, not even an underground dig site with fucking LAVA everywhere or a LITERAL ICY TUNDRA could stop him. Hell, if solid cubes of stone get damaged by you simply jumping off of them, that's when you know you're not to be fucked with.
Wiz: Even his Curios he obtained during his quest, most of which he can channel through the power of Darkness, aren't anything to sneeze at, like his boomerang-like Throwing Sickle and his Spider Scythe, which moves all around the floor, ceiling, walls, anything terrain wise. In fact, some of which are kinda broken.
Boomstick: Yeah, like his Will Skulls! These little beauties gives old Specter here a nice tasty spirit in a skull to munch on. And while normally attempting to eat a spirit normally makes people be tripping balls, but for Specter Knight it just regains his health. Now, I wonder where I can find one?
Wiz: No, Boomstick. I'm not letting you get high off of eating ghosts.
Boomstick: You're no fun...
Wiz: Anyways, he also has his Shadow Mirror, an enchanted mirror that allows Specter Knight to create an intangible copy of himself that can attack others just like Specter could. Not only that, but he also has his Bounding Soul, where he fires up to four lost souls towards his enemies, with the soul itself being able to bounce off of anything and even capable of phasing through them while still damaging them.
Boomstick: And with his Art of the Fire Whee- I mean Barrier Lantern, he can create a shield of spinning fire that gets stronger the more it hits things. Be it projectiles, people, or stage hazards like falling lava, it doesn't matter. The Barrier Lantern doesn't incriminate on what makes it stronger. And if you're bored with it, or just wants a neat projectile, he can just chuck the damn thing at some poor sucker. And then there's his Dread Talon, where with one mighty swipe of this claw he can cause major damage to some poor sucker, even if they're much more durable than what Specter Knight can dish out normally.
Wiz: And most interesting of all is his Chronos Coin. Named after the Greek God of Time, this mere coin gives Specter Knight the power to slow down time around him to the point where it freezes. Albeit for a limited time. And what more is that if he's so happens to run low on Darkness, he can just hits his foes until it gets more. So unlike other playable knights in the game, he's not as limited in the use of his Curios.
Boomstick: And then there's the stuff he can do WITHOUT Darkness.
Wiz: Flying, teleporting, telekinesis, summoning the undead as your minions to act either as swordsmen, sentries, or even as explosives, the capability of homing attacking you. Hell, he can change the weather to be more stormy or just flat out turn the whole area dark, something that doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest.
(Cue: The Apparition (Spectre Knight Battle) - Shovel Knight [OST])
Boomstick: Hell, the guy can even become INVINCIBLE with some attacks! So with the exception of stuff like healing potions, like all undead characters seem to suffer from, nothing could ever stop Specter Knight in his mission!
Wiz: That is until he found out who The Enchantress truly is. For she was none other than Shield Knight herself, corrupted by the amulets power.
Boomstick: And let's just say that Specter Knight took the news of that...
Specter Knight: "It was Shield Knight all along!! She took everything! The Amulet! Luan! She stole my very life away! This ends tonight!"
Boomstick: …not as bad as we thought it would be.
Wiz: With this knowledge, Specter Knight hunted her down, ready to finish her once and for all! …But unfortunately for him, his actions caught up with him.
Boomstick: Remember Luan's son? Well, he eventually grew up to the age that all Shonen protagonists get to before becoming a hero: child age, and set off to avenge dear old dad. Aww, how sweet, right? Well, The Enchantress didn't think the same and corrupted him into an evil version of himself, even amplifying him enough to fight old Specter Knight one on one.
Wiz: Keep in mind that those amplified by The Enchantress' power makes them capable of doing great things. For example of this, Black Knight, after being amplified by her, was capable of summoning meteors from the sky. Assuming that they were falling at least in the speeds of Mach 49 and comparing it to the Tower of Fate's door, the impact it would do to someone after landing on them would have to be at least 1 kiloton of TNT. And yet after a close fight, Specter Knight came out victorious. But it came at a cost.
Boomstick: For you see, The Enchantress had finally found her last knight: Reize, Luan's Son. And remembering the promise he made to old Luan, he told The Enchantress that HE'D to be her last knight instead of the kid as he used the power that would bring him back to life to purify Reize, screwing over Donovan to eternal servitude in the process. And to make matters worse, he then loses to a guy with a shovel. Twice.
Wiz: Now to be fair, that was the same knight who helped seal away The Enchantress. But even after The Enchantress' defeat, Specter Knight is still as deadly as ever. Through sheer will and determination, nothing's going to stop him from getting what he wants.
Specter Knight: "I was granted new life... so that I may take yours!"
Interlude[]
Wiz: Alright, the combatants are set. We've gathered and ran the data through all possibilities, so let's end this debate once and for all.
Boomstick: It's time for a DEATH BATTLE!
