Description[]
Mortal Kombat VS God of War! The two Gods of Thunder clash in a battle of epic proportions to fight out who is the superior being! Who will win? Who will die?
Interlude[]
Wiz: Lightning and electricity are deadly aspects of nature and there are many fictional characters that have been able to malnipulate them for combative purposes.
Boomstick: And these two Gods of Thunder were known for using their powers to defend their violent worlds from harm, but after being corrupted by evil, they now use them to seek vengeance against anyone who crosses their path. Like Raiden, Protector of Earthrealm.
Wiz: And Zeus, King of the Olympian Gods and father of Kratos.
Boomstick: He’s Wiz and I’m Boomstick!
Wiz: And it’s our job to analyse their weapons, armour and skills to find out would win, a DEATH BATTLE!
Raiden[]
Wiz: In the Mortal Kombat Universe, Earthrealm is the world where mankind resides, however since there were many individuals who threatened Earthrealm, it needed a protector and that protector was Raiden, the God of Thunder!
Boomstick: One of these threats was Shinnok, an Elder God with incredible power, who decided to do the cliche bad guy thing and try and take over the world, however Raiden and the other Elder Gods fought Shinnok in a destructive battle, which ended in him being locked up in the Netherrealm, a.k.a Mortal Kombat Hell.
Wiz: But Shinnok was not the last threat to Earthrealm that Raiden would face, as the Emperor of the world of Outworld, Shao Kahn wanted to absorb it into Outworld for his own selfish purposes. Raiden was forced to gather several of Earthrealm’s strongest warriors, to face against Outworld’s most fearsome combatants in a series of tournaments known as the Mortal Kombat tournaments!
Boomstick: Despite being a God, Raiden needs to take on a mortal form in order to participate in the Mortal Kombat tournaments, but that does not mean he’s a total wimp either! He’s strong enough to smash through a stone bridge, throw the massive Shokan, Goro over his head, support a plane as it descended and he regularly trades blows with beings capable of breaking bones and ripping apart bodies with ease.
Wiz: Speed wise, he’s fast enough to appear as a blur while moving, catch a knife thrown by Kano and is comparable to the likes of Sub-Zero (who avoided rockets) and Reptile (who dodged bullets).
Boomstick: In terms of durability, he’s been unaffected by being stabbed in the freakin chest, been slammed through stone doors and pillars, been betean up by 5 revenants at once and just about managed to survive a combined attack from the sorcerers, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi.
Wiz: His stamina is impressive enough where he is capable of fighting off multiple opponents at once, within a few minutes, such as the time where despite being tired out, he managed to fight off several undead revenants of his former allies and eventhough he was beaten up fairly badly, he was still willing enough to fight Shinnok to stop him from corrupting the Earth’s life force, before he ended up being captured by the Dark Lord. He’s also particularly agile, being able to perform somersaults and even double somersaults in the middle of battle.
Boomstick: Being a God of Thunder, Raiden’s main ability is to channel electricity through his body, he can fire bolts of lightning directly from his hands, launch small lightning projectiles at his opponents, turn enemies into stone with his lightning, create lightning based shields and release his lightning in a flash of light to blind his opponents, kind of like Goku’s Solar Flare technique.
Wiz: Raiden can also heal himself and others with electrical energy, summon powerful storms that cover the sky and winds that send his opponents flying, fly fast enough to appear as a blur and teleport with ease. He can use his teleportation abilities in the midst of combat by teleporting away when an enemy is about to launch an attack and then reappear once they’ve performed it, causing their attack to miss.
Boomstick: Since he constantly has to kick the shit out of anyone who threatens Earthrealm in a mortal body, Raiden has mastered several different fighting styles to aid him in combat, such as Judo, Nan Chan, Tae Kwon Do and all 750 variants of Jujutsu. He’s been able to match and even surpass Liu Kang, who is arguably Earthrealm’s greatest champion.
Wiz: To help bring down his opponents, the God of Thunder uses 2 X-Ray moves. In the first move, he stuns the opponent with an electric blast and teleports behind them. He attacks the victim's spine with his elbow, shattering it before teleporting back in front of the target. As he does so, he performs a karate chop down at the opponent's skull, breaking it. Finally, he charges a ball of electricity in his hand, which knocks the enemy back.
Boomstick: In his second X-Ray move, he stuns the opponent with an electric blast before sending them skyward with a lightning strike. He flies after them, grabbing them by the spine and electrocuting their skeleton as he reaches them. As he stops, he summons another lightning bolt to send the victim flying downward. They hit the ground and bounce off of it, allowing Raiden to teleport under them and ram his knee into their spine, breaking it in two. How lovely!
Wiz: When the time comes for Raiden to put down his opponent for good, he has a number of fatalities at his disposal. He can turn his opponents into piles of ash, channel electricity through their bodies until they explode or their eyes pop out and rip out his opponent’s brain and heart, charge them with electricity before placing them back into their bodies causing their head and torso to explode.
Boomstick: Can’t there be at least ONE person in Mortal Kombat who doesn’t like to brutally kill their opponents?! There has to be a nice, non-brutal fighter SOMEWHERE in the Mortal Kombat Universe, right??
Wiz: Boomstick, you do know that Mortal Kombat is a game specifically known for it’s bloody fatalities, don’t you?
Boomstick: Oh yeah...I guess that is true.
Wiz sighs before carrying on.
Wiz: Raiden’s weapon of choice is a metal staff that he use to channel his lightning through. It’s even capable of piercing through the thick hide of Netherealm demons, despite being a blunt weapon. He can also use the Kamidogu dagger of Order to increase his power by sacrificing some of his blood to the deadly blood code, at the cost of becoming more violent and bloodlusted in battle.
Boomstick: While he is pretty powerful in his own right, if Raiden REALLY needs to get down to business and take down his opponent, he can access the full extent of his power in a state known as Unrestricted Raiden. In this form, he was able to fight Shinnok, alongside the Elder Gods in a war that wiped out an entire civilisation and clash against Shao Kahn in a battle that shook the Earth to its core. He can also release all of his godly energy in a massive explosion in an effort to take down his opponent, however since this attack destroys his physical body, he prefers to only use it as a last resort.
Wiz: Raiden is incredibly wise and has acted as a mentor to many of Earthrealm’s strongest warriors. He is a skilled leader and gathered many warriors to fight against the Deadly Alliance, even though practically all of them ended up dying in the process. He has at times become extremely ruthless in his efforts to protect Earthrealm, when his energy has been corrupted, which has lead him to become a lot more violent and aggressive when fighting his opponents.
Boomstick: The God of Thunder has a large number of impressive feats to his name. He’s defeated the former Elder God Shinnok in a battle that almost wiped out the Sarian race, betean the likes of Baraka, D’Vorah, Liu Kang and revenant versions of Jackson Briggs, Stryker, Kabal, Kitana, Nightwolf, Kung Lao and Liu Kang, faced off against hordes of Netherrealm Demons alongside the Wind God, Fujin, was the one of the last people standing in the Battle of Armageddon and even became an Elder God at one point, but then relinquished the role since the Earthrealm warriors were useless at defending themselves against the Deadly Alliance.
Wiz: However, despite being a God, Raiden is hardly perfect. When engaging opponents in his mortal form, he becomes a lot weaker, especially if he’s fighting in a realm that isn’t the Earthrealm. His godly energy can also be corrupted, causing his alligeance and motives to change and his plans have often resulted in many of his closest allies dying for the greater good.
Boomstick: At the end of the day though, with his powers of thunder and lightning, martial arts skill and his amazing hat, Raiden is a formidable fighter who will do whatever it takes to protect the Earthrealm! Also, Wiz, I really like Raiden’s hat. Can we stop off at the mall after work so I get one like it? Please? Please? Please?
Raiden: "I am of truth and light. I protect Earthrealm."
Zeus[]
Wiz: Long ago, the Titans led by King Cronus ruled the Earth. One day Cronus was informed of a prophecy foretelling his downfall at the hands of his son. To prevent himself from being overthrown, Cronus devoured the children of his wife Rhea one by one.
Boomstick finds a cutscene between Cronus and Rhea with Cronus being shown as tall as a mountain, whilst Rhea is the size of a normal person.
Boomstick: Wait, how the fuck are these two meant to have kids if Cronus is the size of a freakin mountain?!
Wiz: Uh, well since other Greek Gods in the God of War franchise have shown the ability to change their size at will, its possible that Cronus or Rhea could do the same so that they could conceive a child more easily. Oh God, why we talking about this now?! Let's carry on with Zeus' bio!!
Boomstick: Rhea then had her 6th child, baby Zeus smuggled away to safety to his grandmother Gaia, the embodiment of the Earth who raised him to fight against Cronus and free his siblings.
Wiz: After freeing his siblings, Zeus led them in an uprising against the Titans which became known as the Great War, however to secure his victory, Zeus forged the powerful Blade of Olympus and used it to banish the Titans to the realm of Tartarus in the Underworld, before proclaiming himself King of the Gods on Mount Olympus.
Boomstick: While Zeus had a wife who was his sister, Hera he decided to be a dick and be unfaithful to her, fathering a swarm of bastard children with a number of Goddesses, mythical creatures and mortal beings. Two of these children were the brothers Kratos and Deimos who were born in SPARTA!
The 'This is Sparta!' clip from the movie 300 is shown.
Wiz: After Kratos grew up, he became a fearsome warrior, but his world was turned upside down when he was tricked by the God of War, Ares into killing his wife and daughter. Not knowing that Ares had been the one behind his family's murder, he would eventually pledge to serve the God of War and the Olympian Gods, in order to make up for his sins. However, when Kratos decided to kill Ares, Zeus decided to aid him in his quest, as he belived Ares to be the 'marked warrior' who was prophecised to kill him.
Boomstick: After Ares had been killed and Kratos had become the new God of War, Zeus would eventually betray him, which proved to the BIGGEST mistake that he would ever make as Kratos eventually went on a rampage that resulted in the deaths of all the other Olympian Gods, before confronting Zeus in a long and brutal battle, where he fufilled the prophecy of the marked warrior and killed Zeus by stabbing him with the Blade of Olympus and then punching him to death ending the rule of Olympus forever.
Wiz: While he was alive though, Zeus possessed incredible power. As the King of the Gods, his physicality was above the majority of the other Olympians and divine beings in the God of War universe. His strength was roughly equal to Kratos (who was strong enough to snap Poseidon's neck and rip off Heilos's head) and was superior to Atlas (who was responsible for holding up the sky) and was impressive enough to send Kratos flying upward with his blows and throw Pandora around 20 meters.
Boomstick: He was fast enough to fly into space within seconds and keep up with Kratos (who was capable of tagging Hermes, the speedy messenger of the Gods). Durability wise, he was able to endure being slashed and punched by Kratos as they fought, punched into a wall, stabbed through the stomach by the Blade of Olympus and was still resisting after Kratos stabbed him through the stomach with the Blade of Olympus, broke his arm and impaled both of his hands. DAMN, this guy’s a fuckin tank!
Wiz: As the God of Thunder, Zeus can create massive thunderstorms and tornados. His most common method of attack is to fire bolts of lightning from his hands, but he can also create lightning based shields, release shockwaves of lightning and augment his fists with lightning to increase his striking power.
Boomstick: He can shapeshift into a variety of different forms, teleport, fly and massively increase his size to the point where he's able to lift buildings off the ground and toss them with ease and shake entire plateaus with his punches.
Wiz: He can also create several clones of himself to aid him in battle and confuse his opponents. These clones can augment their punches with lightning, create shockwaves and fly, however they aren't that difficult to take down.
Boomstick: Part of the reason why Zeus is such a pain to take down is because of his healing factor. It's potent enough to allow Zeus to grow back entire limbs and organs and enabled him to heal completely within a few minutes, after being repteadly stabbed by the Blade of Olympus.
Wiz: Zeus can summon the monstrous Sirens to aid him in battle, which are capable of paralysing enemies with their shrieks and slashing them with their claws. He's also able to drain power from other beings to increase his own strength and strip immortal beings of their immortality, like how he did this to Prometheus.
Boomstick: However, if Zeus gets the crap betean out of him in his physical form, he can resort to his astral form. He's able to shoot out lightening blasts in this form and somehow trap his opponents in their own minds and haunt them with their negative memories whilst he destroys their physical bodies, however said form can be overcome with enough force and mental fortitude forcing Zeus to continue to engage his opponents in his physical body.
Wiz: Zeus is an incredibly skilled warrior, having led and won a war against the Titans and was able to match Kratos in combat, who himself is a capable Spartan warrior. He typically uses a brawling-based combat style combined with his electrokinesis when engaging his adversaries in battle.
Boomstick: The King of the Gods also has two powerful weapons at his disposal. The Gauntlet of Zeus was forged by the God Hephaestus and was used to seal the Titans away in the realm of Tartarus. It’s strong enough to shatter solid stone and iron and is capable of bumping off immortals. However, Zeus’s most powerful weapon is the Blade of Olympus. A sword so cool that it was forged by Zeus using lightning in a tornado! That’s almost as cool as the dwarves forging Thor’s hammer from a dying star!!
Wiz: With the Blade of Olympus, Zeus can create giant tornados as tall as mountains that were capable of affecting the massive Titans from several miles away, release giant hypersonic blasts and wipe out entire armies with a single swing of the blade.
Boomstick: Zeus is pretty intelligent, having led his siblings in a war against the Titans and devised a plan to trick Kratos so that he could drain his godly power and transfer the rest of it to the Blade of Olympus.
Wiz: Being the King of the Gods, Zeus has several impressive feats. After freeing his siblings from his father’s stomach, he defeated and imprisoned the Titans, created the Age of the Gods, sealed all the evils of the world inside Pandora’s box, helped Kratos escape the Underworld, destroyed Sparta, one-shot Gaia with a lightning bolt and nearly killed Kratos in his astral form.
Boomstick: But...he’s not exactly perfect either. He’s extremely arrogant, to the point where he’ll taunt opponents who have a chance of killing him in order to get on their nerves. He’s also paranoid about being overthrown and is vulnerable to a number of magical artifacts and weapons (including the Blade of Olympus), but he can be taken down with enough physical force as well.
Wiz: However, with his electrical abilities, raw power and deadly weapons, Zeus has more than earned his status as King of the Gods and will stop at nothing to destroy all threats to his rule!
Zeus: “Petulant child! I will tolerate your insolence NO MORE!!!”
Zeus then flies up into the air and charges up a massive lightning bolt before launching it at Gaia.
Pre-DEATH BATTLE[]

Wiz: Alright the combatants are set, let’s end this debate once and for all!
Boomstick: It’s time for a DEATH BATTLE!
Special Thanks[]
Special thanks to DeathBattleDino and allofcreation104 for letting me use information from their Raiden and Zeus Death Battle bios.
DEATH BATTLE![]
In the land of Greece large thunderclouds were passing over the various cities with lightning crackling near the peak of the tallest of the Greek mountains and home of the Olympian pantheon, Mount Olympus.
On the side of the mountain, the large gigantic Titans with the Ghost of Sparta, Kratos in tow were attempting to climb up the jagged rocks in an attempt to reach the top of the mountain and bring the fight directly to the Olympian Gods. The camera then moves to the top of the mountain where all the male Olympians had gathered in preparation for this war. An old-looking, but powerful God then turned to address them, it was Zeus, the King of Gods.
Zeus: “My Brothers. We were forged in victory. A victory that ended the Great War and brought forth the reign of Mt. Olympus. Born from the Depths of the Underworld. Rooted in the River of Souls, our Mountain emerged out of the Chaos. As it grew, so too did the might of the Olympians. We created a world of peace, a world of prosperity, a world that lives in the shadow and safety of My Mountain. A Mountain that has come to be the absolute measure of Strength and Power. Now, on this Day, that power is to be tested. The Mortal, Kratos, seeks to destroy all that I have wrought. Brothers, put aside the petty grievances that have splintered us for so long. We will unite. We will stand together. And I will wipe this plague! Olympus will prevail!”
Just after he had finished his speech a mysterious figure appeared in a flash of red lightning a few feet away from them with brown armour and a gold amulet around his belt. It was Raiden, the God of Thunder.
The other Gods turned to face this stranger.
Zeus: Who dares enter Olympus without my consent?!
Raiden replied in a serious tone.
Raiden: I am Raiden, Protector of Earthrealm. Recently, after the defeat of my lifelong enemy, Shinnok, I came to the realisation that I needed to actively take a role in wiping out all threats to Earthrealm before they could become a threat, rather than letting them invade it and destroy countless lives in the process. While this realm was a fair distance away from your realm, Zeus, I managed to detect your power and after observing your behaviour over the last few weeks, I have decided to eliminate you before you become a threat to Earthrealm.
Raiden gets into a fighting position whilst Zeus merely laughs at his threat.
Zeus: Ha! Ha! Your insolence greatly amuses me, Raiden but know this, you cannot hope match my full power, let alone destroy me! Hermes! Helios! Show this fool what happens to those who dare challenge the power of Olympus!
Hermes and Heilos: Yes Zeus!
Heilos then got into his flaming chariot whilst Hermes sped towards Raiden and moved to punch him, but the God of Thunder simply teleported away, surprising the messanger of the Gods. A moment later however, Raiden reappeared blasting Hermes with a red lightning bolt in the back sending him skidding across the floor. He then charged like a bullet into Heilos knocking the Sun God out of his chariot and onto the marble floor. Poseidon and Hades immediately got into combat positions, but Zeus raised his arms to signal them to stop.
Zeus: There is no need to intervene, my brothers. After seeing this fool’s power, I’ve decided to entertain him for a bit and once I have killed him, I will then join you in wiping Kratos, Gaia and the Titans off the face of the Earth.
The two Gods then nodded and jumped down the mountain to engage the Titans, followed by Hermes and Heilos whilst Zeus hovered towards Raiden.
Raiden: You will receive no mercy, Zeus. All you will be given is a warrior’s death!
Zeus: Insolent wretch! It is you who will die on this day!
The two Gods of Thunder then leapt in the air, ready to clash.
FIGHT!

Description[]
Mortal Kombat vs. God of War. The only thing louder than lightning or thunder is the wrath of these gods.
Introduction[]
Wiz: Raiden, Mortal Kombat's God of Thunder.
Boomstick: Zeus, God of War's God of Thunder.
Wiz: Long ago in ancient civilisations, the superstitious people believed that thunder and lightning must surely be the work of the gods, for what else could be creating such great and terrible spectacles?
Boomstick: You want spectacle? How about you throw two powerful gods into rings where blood and broken bones reign supreme. He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.
Wiz: And it's our job to analyse their weapons, armour and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle!
Raiden[]
Wiz: Mortal Kombat, an interdimensional tournament between two different world where those who achieve ten victories in a row are allowed to conquer the world belonging to their opposition. In essence, transforming the way a war can be fought.
Boomstick: And because he likes spectating them so much, Shao Kahn of Outworld initiates more of these tournaments than anybody.
Wiz: Well, I won't dispute that Shao Kahn has the best seat in the house for watching other warriors beat each other to death with their own body parts, but I'd say he keeps to the winner-takes-all-method as to not draw the ire of the Elder Gods, the deities who oversee all realms. But that doesn't mean there aren't your standard kind of gods involving themselves in Mortal Kombat.
Boomstick: Chief among them being Raiden from Earthrealm. The immortal god of thunder himself.
- Background
- AKA Lord Raiden
- God of Thunder
- Age: Millions of years
- Height: 7'
- Defender of Earthrealm
- Needs to consult with the Elder Gods fairly often
- Fought the DC and Injustice cast
Wiz: Having realized the Elder Gods won't directly interfere in Shao Kahn's near-complete conquest of Earthrealm, Raiden took it upon himself to save Earthrealm, serving as the leader of the warriors who stepped forward in defense. Even if it meant needing to fight in the form of a mortal to do so.
Boomstick: Yeah, there's apparently a bunch of divine rules about gods fighting in Mortal Kombat which I do think makes sense. If it was a god fighting mortals, it would be pretty predicable. Looking at you Record of Ragnarok.
Wiz: Even if the fighting is taking place in Earthrealm, the place where Raiden can harness his full might, he still needs to take the form of a mortal to fight in Mortal Kombat. This would likely be the reason he has employed other powerful human warriors to fight alongside himself, like Liu Kang, on account on his compromised abilities.
Boomstick: I have to wonder if he even needs to logically rely on other warriors, because even with his power restricted, he's in a league of his own. He's mastered over 750 varieties of jujitsu, with some Nan Chaun, Judo and Taekwondo thrown into the mix. And whilst he's titled God of Thunder, he wields the element which always comes ahead of it; lighting!
- Abilities and Techniques
- Lightning control
- Weapon summoning
- Straight Shock
- Lightning Hammer
- Shocker
- Electric Current
- Downpour
- Power Discharge
- Deadly Storm
- Might of Mordulus
- Sparkport
- Electric Fly
- Thunder Take You
- Fatalities
- Dark Raiden
- Amulet of Shinnok
Wiz: He can use it in all your standard ways; fire it at a projectile, enhance his strikes with it, summoning bolts from the sky, generate storms on a whim, use it as a shield and even shape it into a sword, as an alterative to the Bo staff he can summon. In certain cases, he can even use the current he sends coursing through someone's body to control their movements.
Boomstick: He can even fly when surrounded by his lightning to turn himself into an electrifying missile and with Sparkport, actually teleport in an instant.
Wiz: His wide array of techniques in battle all make use of his signature element; by unleashing a blast after recovering or blocking an attack, sometimes through the ground itself, call upon a lightning rod or electrical to serve as an arena trap, jump into the air to command lightning attacks, and unleash devasting combos with his lightning enhanced punches, kicks and knees or Bo staff. And then there's his vicious Fatal Blow.
Boomstick: Replacing X-Rays, Raiden's Fatal Blow is available, ironically, when he himself is often a single powerful hit away from defeat, sort of a way of turning the tide. He uses his staff to knock a poor sod about like there's no tomorrow around their face and gut. And with that much harm inflicted on them, then there's no better opportunity for him to use one of the series' patented No Mercies-I mean Fatalities! He can overload their body with electricity in a variety of ways to make their eyes pop, limbs and head explode, or shove his conduction rod straight down their throat and electrocute them from the inside-out. No innuendo meat...or was there?
Popup: In Injustice, Raiden's super move consists of him summoning a massive dragon made of electricity.
Wiz: But Raiden's journey into power doesn't halt there. No, there is in fact another form he can take?
Boomstick: You mean his electric eel Animality?
Wiz: No, I mean his Dark self.
Boomstick: Oh right. Long story short, Raiden's archenemy is the fallen Elder God Shinnok, who planned to corrupt and absorb Earthrealm's life energy with his amulet. When Cage Junior Cassie took him down, Raiden stepped up to use Shinnok's own amulet to undo the damage. Unfortunately, this had the side effect of filtering the corrupted energy into Raiden himself. Thus, he became Black Lightning, instead of the other way around like in Injustice.
Wiz: With his morals now much looser, Raiden has no objection to using the Amulet of Shinnok and all its dark powers, which include disintegrating his opponents, trapping them within the relic or even resurrecting the dead as his thralls.
Boomstick: Bit of a far cry from the noble god beforehand but he eventually managed to kick the Amulet and its corruption, just in time to fight a time-manipulating ultra-bitch obsessed with the perfect run-through.
Wiz: You're one to talk. Every time you get a new MK game, you try to play through it with nothing but flawless victories and you know that's practically impossible. I've had to write cheques, apology notes and attend court summons for hurled controlled incidents.
Boomstick: I happen to have a goal. MK 11 just happens to be a bit more challenging.
Wiz: Yeah, because it requires more strategic thinking. And speaking of, Raiden shines fairly well in that regard.
- Feats
- Shook Earthrealm to its core and outperformed the Big Bang
- Destroyed a monk temple
- Thwarted numerous invasions of Earthrealm
- Channelled lightning through a wooden staff
- Often generates storms
- Harnessed dark magic to return Revenants to life
- Defeated Liu Kang, Shao Kahn, Shinnok
Boomstick: When he had to prevent one of Shao Kahn's invasions, he was able to get the better of him by setting the conquering asshole up to break the rules of Mortal Kombat so that the Elder Gods could directly give him the power to end the fight.
Wiz: Even without the Elder Gods, Raiden once fought against Shao Kahn and generated enough energy to shake the earth straight to its core, which would require a teraton of TNT to perform. He can fight at the speed of lightning itself, no surprise, has flown into the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds and can react to the 2% light speed beam attack of Cetrion, who is herself an Elder God capable of growing to the size of Earth.
Boomstick: And in one of his quasi-canonical arcade endings, Raiden actually goes to war against several other gods and wins, which may even include the Elder Gods, such as the fallen one Shinnok. In fact, Raiden fighting Shinnok is what serves as a stand-in for the event that killed the dinosaurs. You know, the one that was theorized to be a meteor worth 100 teratons of TNT?
Wiz: And in the comic's continuity, Raiden's battle with Shinnok reached heights of cosmic proportions. Described as the great incarnation of kombat throughout the infinite planets, Raiden and Fujin battled against Shinnok in a bout that shook the foundation of the universe, threatened all reality, generated energy capable of moving galaxies and generated enough might to make the Big Bang itself look tame in comparison.
Boomstick: And that right there is what an unrestricted god can do. Really is too bad he has to restrict it when he takes the fight to other realms.
Wiz: But perhaps Raiden's greatest victory, one that allowed him and his allies to escape the temporal manipulations of Kronika, was by relinquishing both body and power to his chosen warrior, Liu Kang, so that he could win the ultimate battle.
Boomstick: Don't worry, because he was soon back, although this time as a complete mortal. A mortal with the ear of the new god of time, fire and lightning, so I mean really, what's the difference. Afterall, he was still the being who had enabled what the true victory of Mortal Kombat really was.
Zeus[]
Wiz: Everyone knows the legends of Kratos, the Ghost of Sparta and later, New Greek God of War, and the story of his journey to these titles.
Boomstick: Which involve a bail-out from Ares, a blood-fuelled power-trip and the accidental murder of his family. The first one I mean, don't worry, Loki's okay.
Wiz: Desperate to have the memories of his travesty erased, Kratos pledged himself to serving the Gods for ten years in the hope of being forgiven. And this meant serving in the shadow of the greatest of the Olympian Gods.
Boomstick: You know him as the god of thunder, lightning and order, the Skyfather, King of Olympus, the primordial playboy, the one who came along, Zeus himself.
- Background
- God of Lightning, the Sky, Order, and Hospitality
- Age: Thousands of years
- Height: 8'11
- Ruler of Olympus and the Greek Gods
- Father of Hercules, Hermes, Ares, Kratos and Deimos
- Infected by the evil Fear
- His Gravedigger shovel would later become armour for Shovel Knight
Wiz: Whilst he hasn't the one directly commanding Kratos, that would be his daughter Athena, he would see fit to help his greatest champion with boosts in power and even appearing to him as a lowly gravedigger to lend a lifeline out of hell itself. Little did even the King of the Gods know that by doing this, he set the stage for a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Boomstick: Zeus had this theory that the child of a divine being would rebel against their father and take their power and position for themselves, and later, that child would then be usurped by their own children, and so on. With Cronos the Titan having taken down his father Uranus the Sky, and with Zeus having taken down Cronos, Zeus seemed poised to have one of his own children take him down.
Wiz: Whilst it was Ares who plotted to overthrow his father, it would be Kratos who Zeus suspected would overthrow him. Although in a roundabout way, this paranoia was in essence, Ares' fault.
Boomstick: And Zeus' too, to be fair, considering Kratos had gotten quite annoyed at the god king imprisoning his younger brother out of fear of the whole son-usurps-father cycle. But because Ares forced Kratos to open Pandora's Box to match him in battle, an Evil was released to infect Zeus. The evil of Fear.
Wiz: With his paranoia of the Cycle enhanced, Zeus decided that for his rule over Greece to be complete, Kratos had to die.
Boomstick: Which was a problem even Kratos himself could not overcome, not without the right strategy, because even compared to the other Olympus, Zeus is in a pantheon of his own.
- Powers and Arsenal
- Godly physique
- Accelerated healing
- Lightning manipulation
- Flight
- Size manipulation
- Shapeshifting
- Duplication
- Teleportation
- Weather control
- Siren summoning
- Curses
- Magic nullification
- Aegis
- Blade of Olympus
- Gauntlet of Zeus
- Fear Zeus Projection
Wiz: For starters, Zeus possesses world-shaking levels of strength, speed and durability, so much so that he can fight against mountain-sized titans and take stabs from weapons the width of his own body. He can shapeshift into a white bird, increase his size to rival that of Titans and inflict horrific curses on others, the Titan Prometheus being a noteworthy example along with one of his former lovers, who would become a monster should she tell any of his secrets. And on the flipside, those who wield the tiniest percentage of his power are able to dispel other magical effects.
Boomstick: But he wouldn't be a Zeus unless he had thunderbolts to hurl. He can create spears of lightning, enhance his strikes with it, send it shooting along the ground and even have orbs of it surround him as a shield. The weather itself is little more than a tool for him to use as he pleases. Along with those dark-skinned Sirens he can send his opponent's way.
Wiz: He can also teleport and fly but most peculiar of all, he can generate phantom clones of himself to assist in battle. Whilst they will go down with just one hit, Zeus can create a new one with the slightest movement and use them in his attacks to generate shockwaves.
Boomstick: Could have something to do with...nah, can't think of anything, just a cool trick. And speaking of cool, Zeus has a few weapons to call his own.
Wiz: He possesses his own personal shield, an Aegis, to cover his arm, a gauntlet which bound the Titans in characters and can smash straight through other gods, and by far the most greatest and of his own design, the Blade of Olympus.
Boomstick: Looking like it's made of gold, requiring godly blood to wield fully and as long as half of Zeus' body, the Blade is by far the ultimate game-breaking in the land of Greece. With it, Zeus can easily slay other immortals and unleash massive waves of energy to either banish or vaporize foes.
Wiz: The Blade is also capable of siphoning another god's power, which was the ploy Zeus set into motion in order to be rid of Kratos; by letting him give up a majority of his power into the blade and then using it to strike him down.
Boomstick: Not being a god may not seem like a handicap for someone like Kratos but without his status as the God of War, title-drop, there was no way he could take down Zeus. So he pulled an Endgame long before the Avenger's one could introduce their own fat Thor and stole the Blade, getting his powers back and bringing the battle to Olympus itself to kill Zeus once and for all.
Wiz: Which didn't sit to well with the other gods. In spite of fearing and resenting Zeus themselves, they understood Zeus' intrinsic ties to Greece and fought to defend him. And with each one Kratos struck down, Greece steadily transformed into an apocalyptic landscape.
Boomstick: You think he'd stop after the killing of one god caused a Greece-spanning flood but nope, Kratos kept at it. Imagine if something happened to me. What would happen to our show?
Wiz: Oh, nothing, I'd just hire a replacement.
Boomstick: You can be a real jerk you know that?
- Feats
- Strongest of the Olympian Gods
- Tricked and killed Kratos
- Dug a hole out of the Underworld
- Survived repeatedly impalement from the Blade of Olympus
- Shook the foundations of the Greek world with a yell of anger
- Defeated the Titans, Gaia, Kratos
- Fear Zeus completed destroyed nearly all of Kratos' weapons
Wiz: As the apex god of Olympus, Zeus is capable of cowering even his own brothers into submissions, the next two strongest Olympians, giving you an idea of just how above other gods he is. Poseidon possesses electricity which can disintegrate both both and soul, and Hades can rip out the souls of other immortals. And the Titans are no exception to living in Zeus' shadow, as he considers their power to be irrelevant next to his. This would include Atlas, who was able to strike down the embodiment of the sun Helios.
Boomstick: And with Helios' power, Atlas was able to start destroying the Pillar of the World, which keeps the Underworld and Mortal World apart so that they don't collide and return all of existence in the Greek world to nothingness. In the novelisation of the second game, Zeus let out a roar of anger so powerful, it shook the foundations of the world itself. This could include the Underworld itself, which many sources state is infinite in size.
Wiz: And posing as Kratos' greatest challenge, his own son who bested several of the above entities in combat, is the final clincher of Zeus' incredible might.
Boomstick: Kratos is confirmed by developers to be superior in all ways to the Redeemed Warriors of the Multiplayer mode in Ascension, who could wield a hammer bearing the weight of the whole world behind it, a spear which held up the cosmos and an enhancement that allowed them to move at the speed of light.
Wiz: It took Kratos travelling back in time, destroying the quintessential Flame of Olympus and driving the Blade of Olympus through Zeus to pin him to Gaia's heart to seemingly kill him, but even then he arose as a dreadful new entity. Commonly referred to as Fear Zeus, this astral projection arising from Zeus' body was powerful enough to completely destroyed 90% of Kratos' arsenal. The origin behind this form is widely argued but it may have something to do with the Fear within Zeus, as it subjects Kratos to a mental darkness embodying all his greatest failures and fears.
Boomstick: But this is where Kratos truly turns the tide upon his father, as his mental dive allows him to unlock the real power of Pandora's box. You see, since the evils went to the gods like Zeus, the power of Hope is what allowed Kratos to slay Ares. And now he uses it once again to force Fear Zeus back into Fearful Zeus and go utterly ape on him. And that's saying something.
Wiz: With Zeus' death, the reign of Olympus was truly over, with Greece plunged into apocalyptic chaos, all serving as the ultimate proof that in the Greek World, it was Zeus who reigned absolute. Although perhaps he still had a legacy, for Kratos, now older and wiser in the Norse Realms, would forever live with the blood of his own father on his hands, having once become the exact kind of God Zeus himself was.
Interlude[]
Wiz: Alright the combatants are set, time to end this debate once and for all.
Boomstick: It's time for a Death Battle!
The Battle[]
Setting: Shrine of Olympus
On the edge of the domed, pillar supported structure jutting out from Olympus, Zeus looked down at the rolling thunderstorms, face etched in anger as blue lightning crackled.
Zeus: I am a patient king, but when there is someone else who dares trifle with my sphere of dominion...
He lifted his hand and a yellow lightning bolt formed in it.
Zeus: Then they will pay the price!
He drew his arm backwards, ready to throw the bolt, yet before he could, Raiden flew upwards through the storm cloud, a ball of lightning formed between his hands.
Raiden: I have already payed for many things, God of Olympus. The Elder Gods have decreed it is your turn!
With a yell, both gods hurled their respectively-shaped lightning attacks at each other, which met in mid-air and exploded, bathing the area in static-filled light.
FIGHT!
When the glare subsided, Zeus saw Raiden was still flying up to meet him, and he jumped back as the rival god smashed upwards through the ground he was standing on. When he landed, Zeus looked up to see Raiden in the air, his fist convulsing with lightning to bear down at him with an attack. Zeus crossed his arms to guard against the attack, which resulted in a lightning explosion against his forearms pushing him back a little, yet retaliated afterwards. The lightning enhanced punch thrown at Raiden was avoided, yet the next one aimed at his stomach connected, and Raiden barely recovered in time to guard against the punch thrown straight at his face. He was sent skidding backwards himself, but when Zeus lunged at him with a lightning bolt in hand, Raiden grabbed the arm and flipped the Olympian over himself. After his back hit the ground enough to crack it and bring out blood, Zeus' face was bombarded by repeated punches from Raiden, until he was able to grab the fist. He used the hold to swing Raiden into the ground, getting back to his feet in the process, bringing a foot down into the god's chest afterwards. Yet Raiden forced Zeus' foot off with a current through his own chest and then shot upwards with a propulsion-harnessed bolt of lightning, kneeing Zeus in the face during. Zeus lost his hold on Raiden's fist, which Raiden swung up at him upon landing. Zeus swung his own punch downwards to meet it, the fists smashing together and producing a shockwave to send the two flying backwards.
Zeus was nearly able to stop himself going back any further by driving his feet into the ground, only for Raiden to shoot towards him with Electric Fly, tackling Zeus out of the Altar to smash him against his own massive statue. At this point, Raiden realized that Zeus had grabbed a hold of his wrists and before he could get free, a lightning bolt from the skies shot down and hit him in the back, smashing him into the ground. Zeus pushed off the statue and raised his hand, a lightning bolt hitting it to don the limb in his Gauntlet, and came down towards the prone Raiden with the metal fist raised.
Raiden summoned a sword of lightning from his hand, using it to block the strike even as it sent a thunder-boom out from the point of impact. The Earthrealm god summoned another lightning sword and stabbed it up from Zeus, forcing him backwards as it skimmed his check and he spun back to his feet, in the process slashing Zeus on the waist and chest. Zeus snarled in anger and lashed out with the Gauntlet, slapping Raiden twice upon the head before grabbing said head so he could bring his face down into his extended knee. Still holding Raiden's head, Zeus sent a blast of godly energy through it, blasting Raiden backwards with a scorched face. Raiden stumbled back to his feet as Zeus advanced towards him, and summoned his conduction rod to block Zeus' swipe. Summoning a bolt of lightning to strike the rod, it was superheated to the Gauntlet and with the unorthodox trapping, Raiden pulled the Gauntlet from Zeus' arm; in the Greek god's surprise, Raiden swung the rod around and smashed the welded Gauntlet on it into Zeus' face, breaking it into scrap metal.
Zeus recovered from the strike nearly instantly and punched out at Raiden, who caught the punch. His own retaliation-punch was caught by Zeus and the two struggled to overwhelm the other as lightning cackled from their bodies. The two glared at each other in the lock before Zeus suddenly shapeshifted into an eagle, his claws aimed at Raiden's face and inflicted several scratches. Raiden cursed before shapeshifting himself into an electric eel, forcing Zeus back by channeling electricity through himself. As the Eagle-Zeus flew upwards to shriek in anger, Eel-Raiden summoned a lightning dragon around itself, which fly up to grab Eagle-Zeus in its jaws. Zeus was forced back into his normal form, and in the dragon's fangs was smashed through the ceiling of the Flame of Olympus' room. He was dragged across the walls and smashed through several pillars before getting tossed towards the Flame. The Olympian teleported himself out of his momentum and appeared on the walkway to the flame, the lightning dragon turning around to come at him a second time. Zeus summoned around himself floating orbs of electrical energy, which sheared away the dragon construct as it came at him.
Raiden leapt from the apparition in his normal form and fired out a sphere of lightning energy at Zeus. His floating spheres blocked the attack at the cost of themselves and Zeus started darting towards him, leaving behind a copy of himself each time. In spite of Raiden lobbing lightning spheres at Zeus, the Olympian was stood standing in front of him, his copies having moved to surround Raiden. Raiden's eyes darted around himself before he guarded himself as the copies lunged at him. Their fists cracked all over his body until he was able to get them to back off with a lightning bolt to himself, summoning his Bo Staff in the process; a twirling strike out dispelled several of the Zeus clones but some where able to get into the air to avoid the attack. They then shot back down to earth, shaking it with their self-sacrificial landings, knocking Raiden off-balance at different angles. Several Zeus copies where left to throw strikes at Raiden, missing as he propelled himself into the air with his staff; in the air, he sent down three lightning bolts to dispel the remaining clones.
The Earthrealm god landed and looked around for the real Zeus.
Raiden: Coward! Show yourself and fight!
He suddenly felt a horrendous pain through his side and looked down to see it had been stabbed through with the Blade of Olympus. From behind him, Zeus sneered.
Zeus: A king may present himself from wherever he wishes! That is the law of a kingdom!
Raiden: I suppose you're right...
Raiden suddenly Sparkported behind Zeus and grabbed him around the chest.
Raiden: Then I will take you to mine!
Zeus only had time to bellow in surprise before Raiden teleported the both of them to a Shaolin Temple. Zeus broke free, turned around and swung the blade down at Raiden, who caught it with one palm. Zeus' eyes widened in shock as Raiden was invigorated by his native realm and the King of Olympus received a powerful haymaker across the face. As Zeus flew backwards, Raiden summoned a bolt of lightning to strike him in the chest and mash him into the ground. The Blade of Olympus flew from his grasp as the power coursed through him until Zeus let out a roar and a flash of light preluded him rising up as a giant. Raiden stepped back in alarm and rolled backwards from Zeus' downwards foot stomp. Raiden blasted Zeus with lightning yet it barely made him flinch and Zeus retaliated with a surge of lightning through the stone ground. Raiden endured the assault and drew out Shinnok's amulet, firing a beam of energy from it up at Zeus. This had a more significant effect than his prior attack and Zeus felt his energy bend and warp. He growled in agony as he was forced to shrink back to his normal size and looked up to see Raiden clip the Amulet onto his chest armour, taking on the dark energy.
Zeus stepped back in shock before Raiden was suddenly in front of him, his staff in hand and ready to perform a modified version of Thunder Take You; he spun the staff to repeatedly strike Zeus in the face, teleported into the air to hurl it into the Olympian's forehead and then retrieving it and appearing behind Zeus with two teleports to drive it into his spine. Zeus was sent skidding across the ground, leaving a trail of blood. When he came to a stop, Zeus was in front of the Blade of Olympus and he reached out for it. His wrist was stomped on by Raiden, who picked up the Blade himself.
Raiden: Those who live by the sword, die by the sword!
He raised it above his head, ready to bring it down, but as he held it ready to strike, he felt his strength begin to leave him. He gasped in surprise and stumbled, attempting a slash downwards, which was caught by the hand of Fear Zeus. It rose to overshadow the weakening Raiden, yanking away the Blade of Olympus, which had drained Raiden of his godly power, before striking him away with a backhand. As Raiden travelled backwards, straight as an arrow, Fear Zeus returned to Zeus' body, who snatched the Blade of Olympus upon springing back up. He flew after Raiden and upon coming level, stabbed the Blade of Olympus down into the ground just ahead of Raiden, the god's trajectory meaning he flew straight into it.
The Earthrealm god was bisected as he continued to fly forwards and as his remains started to separate, Zeus fired out a bolt of lightning, which cooked Raiden's insides and fused his two halves together. Yet this god of thunder was still very much dead, his horrifically fixed body smashing into the stone wall of the temple.
Zeus: Yet another stunning failure from a foreign god.
He teleported back to Olympus, the blue lightning in the clouds surrounding it reverting to a yellow coloration.
KO!
Outcome[]
Boomstick: God Almighty!
Wiz: Couldn't have put it better myself, as Zeus ultimately had the better advantages as a god. Befitting, considering he was a king of them. Whilst Raiden did appear to be the more conventional fighter, Zeus is no stranger to stopping wars with his own two hands.
Boomstick: He was also much faster than Raiden. Only 2% lightspeed isn't really up to stuff compared to the full speed of light, which Zeus and others he's fought could surpass.
Wiz: On the subject of strength, Raiden being able to shake the Earth and fight Elder Gods who can grow larger than it does fall short of Zeus' universe-level feats, even if he give him the comics scaling.
Boomstick: Raiden and Fujin working together could put the Big Bang to shame but the World Pillar Helios could damage prevented the infinite Underworld and the separate plane of reality Greece, along with other realms like Morpheus' and Thanatos', from becoming Chaos again. And the Blade of Chaos Kratos wielded after moving could Midgard where on par with the Leviathan Axe and Mjolnir, which could shake the Nine Realms.
Wiz: Now, the comic's description said Raiden, Fujin and Shinnok caused shockwaves felt on infinite Realms, but the definition on whether realms are universes or planets leans a little more to being in-between the two. Shao Kahn taking Earthrealm for himself is presented as him lording over the planet Earth itself and Ed Boon has even said that, whilst Earthrealm could be classified as beyond the solar system, it's not the universe itself. Whilst shaking infinite physical planets could be an indicator of infinite might, the ability of gods to threaten numerous infinite realms like the Nine keep the power difference clear.
Popup: The Netherrealm is described as infinite in-game but given prior evidence, it's unlikely other Realms match this size, and other realms comparable to the Underworld help keep Zeus on a higher level of might. Cory Barlog has officially stated the Nine Realms as being infinite.
Boomstick: Also helping Zeus out was his arsenal, which could specifically kill divine beings like Titans and Gods. Plus, if not wielded by Zeus, the Blade of Olympus would take someone's godly power and store it inside itself. Raiden was definitely a tactical and brainy fighter but so was Kratos, and Zeus, who's rather wily himself, tricked him into picking up the blade.
Wiz: On the flipside, the atomizing lightning of Poseidon is very little compared to Zeus himself, so the similar effect of Shinnok's amulet was likely to be ineffective. Whilst it could possibly have trapped Zeus like it did Shinnok himself or even corrupt his power, Zeus' speed, teleportation and duplication would give him the options to buy time for a killing blow.
Boomstick: Whereas thunder comes after lightning, Raiden comes after Zeus thanks to the Olympian's power, speed, cunning, ability variety and god-killing weapons. Just what you need for a Perfect Storm.
Wiz: The winner is Zeus.
