History[]

Raised to a Scottish royal family, Merida was destined to become a brave young woman unafraid to take on the adventure regardless of the risks, though she does not know what it really is like. Given a bow from her father at a young age, Merida practiced constantly with it, becoming proficient with the bow and arrow. When she encountered Mordu, an ancient monstrous bear who was once a selfish prince who destroyed his kingdom out of pride and hate, her father, King Fergus, lost his leg protecting her. To that end, Merida grew up, a master markswoman of her own right. However, word came to Scotland's shores that the clans who swore their fealty eternally to Fergus had arrived with their sons, with intent to betroth Merida to become the new King and Queen of Scotland, to Merida's displeasure. Because none of the clan's heirs are worthy of Merida's hand, she protested against it, causing a fallout between her and her mother, Queen Elinor. She later discovered a witch of the woods masquerading as a woodcrafter and asked her for a spell to change her mother's heart. In exchange, Merida would buy all of the witch's woodcraft.

The witch apparently agreed to give Merida the spell in the form of a cake, which Merida has to give to Elinor to change her heart. But the spell had awry consequences; it transformed Elinor to a bear. Merida returned to the witch's lair, but found out that the witch has gone, but not before she gives Merida cryptic instructions to reverse the spell:

"Fate be changed. Look inside. Mend the bond torn by pride."

Initially, Merida does not understand, but bonds with Elinor over time, and discovered that Mor'du is the prince Elinor told her in the legends. Merida later came to the conclusion that to mend the bond torn by pride, she must repair the tapestry she damaged while arguing with her. But complications grow as Elinor slowly devolves to her primal instincts and Fergus discovers her in her bear form. Mistaking her for Mor'du, Fergus attacks Elinor despite Merida's intervention. Elinor flees, prompting Fergus to amass the clans into a hunting party to kill Elinor. Merida escapes with the help of her triplet brothers, Hubert, Harris and Hamish, all of them becoming bears themselves after eating the cake, repairs the damaged tapestry, and intervenes against Fergus before he attempts to kill Elinor.

Mor'du appears and overpowers the entire hunting party, even Fergus himself, and nearly kills Merida, but Elinor steps in and fights Mor'du herself, resulting in the latter's death by a falling menhir. Merida wraps the tapestry around Elinor and makes amends with her before the second sunrise, effectively nullifying the spell, turning Elinor, Hubert, Harris and Hamish into humans again.

Merida and Elinor make a new tapestry and bid farewell to the clans.

She also made a brief apperance in Ralph Breaks The Internet, as amongst the gang of Disney Princesses that bonded with Vanelope von Schweetz, who became an isolated runaway after her game was removed from the arcade.
