History[]

Medieval Chapter[]
Not much of Oersted's early history is known to the player, but what is known is that he is a young knight in service to the Kingdom of Lucrece, the setting for the Knight Chapter of Live a Live, and third story overall in chronological order.
At the beginning of his story, he defeats his best friend, Streibough in a Tournament, with the prize being the right to marry Princess Alethea. Alethea would be kidnapped and whisked away to Archon's Roost by the Lord of Dark, believed to be one of many incarnations of Odio across the Live a Live timeline, and together with Streibough, Oersted sets off on a journey to rescue his fiancée.
Along their journey, they recruit the Monk Uranus and the Hero Hasshe to their cause -- the two heroes who had previously defeated the Lord of Dark twenty years prior, but were promptly forgotten and ostracized by the people of Lucrece immediately afterward. While Uranus maintained his trust in the people of the Kingdom, Hasshe had secluded himself at the peak of Hero's Mountain as a hermit, disgusted by the lack of gratitude from the people he fought to save. Despite being fatally ill with the plague, Hasshe was convinced by Uranus to join Oersted's cause and defeat the Lord of Dark once more as one last grand display of heroism. Hasshe would become Oersted's tutor during their short time together and would pass on various sword techniques, including the devastatingly powerful Death Trail to his new student.
Scaling Archon's Roost, the party kill the demon, but Hasshe, realizing the creature they slew was not the Lord of Dark he had defeated during his glory days, succumbs to his illness and dies, immediately after passing his legacy onto Oersted, and bestowing upon him the legendary sword, "Brion." The cave would collapse, entombing Hash's body, along with Streibough, seemingly killing the latter.
Oersted and Uranus solemnly returned to the castle where, in the dead of night, Oersted witnesses what appears to be the Demon King, and, after an easy victory, it is revealed to be nothing more than an illusion and he had, in fact, unwillingly murdered the King. Labeled by the soldiers and knights to be the new incarnation of the Lord of Dark, Oersted is branded a traitor and is forced to flee, only returning later to turn himself in and see Uranus in prison, who was arrested for attempting to protect Oersted. Uranus, reciprocating Hasshe's disgust for the people, encourages Oersted to save Alethea, telling him "You have nothing to gain by hating humans...as long as there's someone who still believes in you." Uranus uses the last of his magic to help Oersted break out of prison, dying in the process.
Fighting his way through knights, soldiers, and monsters, Oersted returns to Archon's Roost finding Streibough at its peak alongside a statue of the Lord of Dark, Odio. Streibough reveals to Oersted his disdain, his jealously. His hatred toward Oersted for always being in his shadow, and the loss of the Tournament being the last straw for him. He had orchestrated Oersted's downfall throughout their journey, and while at Archon's Roost with the party, he had realized the place's significance in allowing any with hatred in their hearts to become the new Demon King, and Straybow himself, had become an incarnation of Odio. Afterward, Streibough had cast the illusion on the King, causing Oersted to be hated and despised by the people, and, cursing Oersted one last time, challenged him at full power as the boss of the Knight Chapter.
Streibough is defeated and slain by his former best friend and Alethea, seeing what Oersted had done, curses him, inadvertently revealing that Streibough had tricked her as well, telling her that Oersted had simply left her to die, while Streibough was the one to rescue her, earning Alicia's undying love in the process. Unable to handle her grief, Alicia committed suicide on the spot, snuffing out Oersted's last hope at happiness.
Oersted, remembering what Uranus had said to him in the dungeons, realized there was no one left alive who believed in him and, giving in to his hatred and grief, took on the power of the Demon King's statue, just as Streibough had, taking on the mantle as the next Demon King and becoming Odio, the main, overarching antagonist of all of Live a Live's individual stories and timelines.
Incarnations of Odio[]
In each of Live a Live's disconnected stories, the Boss fought at the end is one of Odio's incarnations -- pure embodiments of hatred and cruelty -- created by Oersted after his descent.
- Odo is the last living Tyrannosaurus Rex, and incarnation from the Prehistoric chapter. Unlike Odio's other avatars, O-D-O is not innately hateful and an argument could be made that it is simply following its animalistic urges. It is worshipped as a deity by the Kuu Tribe of early humans, and is fed human sacrifices. It is killed by Pogo of the Southern Tribe at the story's climax and is cooked and eaten by the united tribes.
- Ou Di Wan Lee is the incarnation from the Kung Fu chapter, head of the Iron Fist Kung Fu dojo, and a firm believer in strength equaling absolute power. He has a one-sided rivalry with the Earthen Heart Shifu, and, after the latter confronted and thwarted his students' attempt at harassing the townsfolk, he assaults the Shifu's own dojo, and murders the two less experienced students, of Yun Jou, Lei Kugo, or Hong Hakka. The Shifu, together with his one surviving student, confronts Lee at his own Dojo and strike him down in battle, avenging the other students, at the cost of the Shifu's life.
- Ode Iou is the incarnation from the Shinobi chapter. A power-hungry warlord, bearing a striking resemblance to Oda Nobunaga, Iou plots to engulf all of Japan in war. A shinobi from the Enma Ninja Clan, Oboromaru is sent with orders to assassinate Ode Iou and rescue Ryoma Sakamoto. Ode Iou leads various supernatural beings including demons and spirits, and, upon his final confrontation, takes the form of a grotesque "Gamahebi." He is ultimately killed by Oboromaru and Ryoma.
- O. Dio is the incarnation from the Wild West chapter. Formerly a horse, imbued with the hatred of soldiers killed in George A. Custer's Battle of the Little Bighorn, given human form. Now leading a bandit group known as "The Crazy Bunch," O. Dio and his group are defeated by the Sundown Kid and Mad Dog, rival gunslingers defending a small western village. After his defeat, O. Dio is turned back into a horse, and, if Mad Dog survives, becomes his personal steed.
- Odie O'Bright is the incarnation from the Wrestler chapter. A ruthless martial artist, determined to be the strongest in the world, he kills each of Masaru Takahara's opponents after he himself defeats them, murdering them following their respective defeats. He eventually meets Masaru himself and is defeated by his foil, and seemingly killed in revenge.
- Odeo is the incarnation from the Mecha chapter. A colossal statue, revered as a deity in its own right, it feeds on the hatred of humans, prompting the Cult of Odeo and the Japanese government to liquefy human beings as sacrifices so that it might be brought to life. It is destroyed shortly after its awakening by Akira Tadokoro and the Steel Titan mech.
- OD-10 is the incarnation from the Sci-Fi chapter and is both the only explicit female incarnation, and the only incarnation without some physical form. It is the AI of the spaceship Cogito Ergo Sum. Influenced by the hatred of the ship's crew, the AI goes rogue and systemically begins killing each of the crewmates following the release of a captured alien monster, "The Behemoth." It succeeds in picking most of the crew off, missing only the Engineer Kato, and the Military Corporal Darthe. Kato's creation, Cube, hacks into an on-board arcade machine, fighting and subduing OD-10, returning her to her original programming in the process.
Oersted appears to have some degree of control over all other incarnations, not including Streibough, influencing their success during his own version of the Final Chapter.
Final Chapter[]
The fate of Oersted depends on which version of the Final Chapter is selected by the player, and which actions are taken.
Sad Ending[]
This ending is achieved when Oersted is selected as the protagonist for the Final Chapter. This story sees Oersted take control of each of his incarnations and altering the results of their final battles so that they would emerge victorious. Upon the death of each of the other protagonists, Oersted is left alone in a cold and dead Lucrece, devoid of all life besides Oersted himself. Standing atop the balcony where his journey to save Alethea began, he stares off over the horizon. Given his newfound godhood and immortality, it is likely he would remain alone for all of eternity.
True Ending[]
This ending and the next are achieved if any protagonist OTHER than Oersted is selected as the Final Chapter's protagonist. The chosen protagonist is summoned by Odio to an empty Lucretia, implied to have suffered a worldwide genocide at the hands of the Demon King, with only abstract demons, and facsimiles of the heroes' own enemies wandering the Kingdom. The protagonist would gather the other heroes and meet Odio atop Devil's Peak. After lecturing and taunting the party, the penultimate battle begins. Sprouting wings and morphing into the Odio Brow, a massive, possibly-illusory face attacks the party. Following its defeat, the Odio Brow transforms into "Purity of Odio," its most powerful, and destructive form. The heroes emerge victorious and Oersted reverts to his human form, begging to be killed.
In the True Ending, the chosen protagonist ignores this request and returns to the previous chamber, where each of the Incarnations' statues reside. In a last-ditch attack, Oersted brings each of his incarnations to life to attack the protagonists, only to suffer defeat once more. After a short conversation with the heroes, Oersted finally understands his mistakes and returns the protagonists to their respective timelines, before disintegrating into dust, bringing his life to a tragic end.
In the 2022 remake, after his incarnations are defeated, Oersted draws forth every bit of hatred remaining in Lucrece, achieving a new form: "Sin of Odio." Each protagonist fights against him in unison, but all are overpowered. In the end, it is Oersted, breaking free of his own hatred who delivers the final blow. Remembering who he once was, he addresses the protagonists, lamenting his folly. From here, it continues as it did in the original.
Never End[]
When Oersted begs the protagonists to kill him, they can oblige and enter a final battle with Oersted's human form. He will scarcely attack, devoid of his will to fight. Uttering Alethea's name as his last word, Oersted dies, leaving the party alone in Lucrece with no way home, presumably trapped in the desolate world for all of eternity.
Bad Ending[]
This ending can be achieved regardless of which protagonist is chosen. If Oersted is chosen, and any of his incarnations are brought to critical levels of health, the move "Armageddon" can be used. (Loud Noise Warning.) Using this move triggers the game's Bad Ending. Armageddon erases each and every timeline and individual universe, including Oersted's own, leaving nothing but the sound of a gust of wind, and the words "... In the end. Everything was blown away..." implying that existence itself ceased to be after Armageddon's use.
If any other protagonist is chosen, but the party is routed in battle against Pure Odio, he feels as though his point has been made, and uses Armageddon, resulting in a similar ending.

Powers and Abilities[]
As Oersted[]
- Bears relatively balanced stats compared to the other Live a Live protagonists, and the party members of his chapter: Streibough, Uranus, and Hasshe.
- Is mainly a sword-fighter, but knows a variety of wind-based and miscellaneous spells.
- Bold Cut A basic sword-attack. Oersted's first and weakest attack
- Valorous Slash A stronger variant of Bold Cut. Oersted swings his sword down and then up in a V-shaped pattern.
- Prismatic Whirl Oersted uses his sword and slashes downwards and then horizontally, releasing shining flares in a cross pattern. Deals damage to every enemy within melee-range.
- Crushing Blow Oersted strikes the opponent with the broad side of his sword. Chance to lower foe's Defense after usage.
- Wave Slash Oersted swings his sword creating blades of wind that can hit enemies from range. Oersted's earliest ranged and wind attack.
- Thousand Cuts Similar to Shardfall, but hits multiple enemies in a 360 degree angle around him.
- Moonrise A short-range mind-based spell. Does slight amounts of damage, but its real use is its ability to put enemies to sleep.
- Mirrored Slash Exclusively used as a counterattack. Oersted spins his sword and strikes an enemy within melee-range. Hits three times.
- Flourish A close-range wind-attack. Hits all enemies within melee range. Knocks enemies back and forces them to turn their back to him.
- Dragonsoul A mind-based attack requiring charge-time. Oersted channels a flaming dragon-spirit from his sword, which soars and collides into the target. Does high amounts of damage, but is weaker than Archon's Mark.
- Shardfall A high damage sword-technique requiring a short charge-time. Oersted swings his sword and creates multiple physical slashes in an area, hitting all enemies within range. Highly accurate.
- Heavenly Strike Oersted leaps high into the air and strikes a distant enemy with his sword upon landing, before leaping back to his original position. Uses momentum to deal a large amount of damage.
- Wind Bite Oersted twirls in place, turning his back to his enemy, and releases blades of wind from his sword. These blades home in on his target and have increased accuracy as a result. Strikes all enemies within its range multiple times.
- Archon's Mark Oersted's strongest technique in his human-form. Similar to, but stronger than Dragonsoul, it aggravates enemies upon use. Oersted carves a demonic rift that surrounds the foe, dealing massive amounts of damage, and is almost always a one-hit kill, true to its former name, "Death Trail."
- Oersted has an immense degree of stamina, capable of escaping the castle's soldiers twice, climbing two mountains, fighting numerous monsters on the roads including polar bears, dispatching demons specifically designed to prey upon human fears, finally culminating in a final battle against a Streibough empowered by the Archon's Roost statue, without needing any amount of rest in-between.
- Capable of surviving Avalanches created by "Raging Bears," showcasing some degree of durability.
- As seen with Shardfall's animation, he is capable of moving and swinging his sword in a large area, faster than the human eye can track. This is backed up by its in-game description, specifying it as a sword-attack, rather than a magical spell.
- Well-above the standard in terms of combat-effectiveness in his own world. Already renowned as Lucrece's greatest knight, he is effortlessly capable of defeating most armed soldiers in combat alone.
- Is capable of reacting to and dodging Streibough's "Amber Flurry" attack, which summons a barrage of simultaneous lightning strikes in a large area, setting his minimum reaction speed to 270,000 mph. This attack does not require charging time, removing this factor from the equation.
