Interlude[]
Bryant: Inside of us, there is a gift. But many times, that gift is hidden under a life of a lack of opportunities and our own uncertainty.
Thea: But when we get the chance, we can show off our stuff!
Bryant: Like Nagisa Shiota, the returning assassin from Assassination Classroom.
Thea: And Komaru Naegi, Danganronpa's Trigger Happy-
Bryant: Ultra Despair Girl.
Thea: Wait, what? Why is the shooting game not named Trigger Happy Havoc?!
Bryant: I'm Bryant Reese.
Thea: And I'm Thea Price.
Bryant: And we're here from Fanfiction.net to find out which student would win, a Death Battle!
Nagisa Shiota Claps Back in Death Battle![]
Bryant: In the school known as Kunugigaoka Junior High, one of the most prestigious schools in Japan, there existed five class levels, which the students were sorted. At the top stood Class 3-A, the third year middle school class, filled to the brim with students who were considered to be the elite. On the opposite end of the spectrum laid Class 3-E, the third year middle school 'failures', considered to be the scum of society, and failures of human beings.
Thea: That might seem exaggerated, and it is. All a part of the principal's plan to motivate his students by making Class E seem like the end of your life. But the status quo changed when Korosensei came and turned E-Class from a class of failures to a class of assassins!
Bryant: Korosensei, or Unkillable Teacher, was a result of anti-matter research who was asked to look over the class by their late teacher, Aguri Yukimura. Doomed to die in the upcoming March, Korosensei dedicated his entire life improving the lives of his students. And he succeeded! He taught students to be confident, to accept certain aspects of themselves, to truly be people that they could be proud of. And arguably, the student affected by him the most was Nagisa Shiota.
- Nagisa Shiota:
- Age: 15 (22 after timeskip)
- Height: 159 cm (160 cm after timeskip)
- Weight: 48 kg
- Codename: Androgynous
- Likes: Sushi, English
- Dislikes: Being short, dresses, Science
Thea: We covered Nagisa before, but if you don't remember him, here's a reminder.
Bryant: Nagisa was born as the only child of Hiromi Shiota. Hiromi grew up under strict parents, with little to no freedom to live the life she wanted. As she grew up wanting to live a more relaxed life where she got to wear the dresses she wanted and style her hair how she wanted, but also live a successful life with her dream job achieved thanks to her dream school.
Thea: But since she was already an adult who failed to get into her dream school and to get into her dream company, she decided that she would raise her daughter to have her ideal childhood, and ideal adulthood- and it's a boy. He's got a girl's face, but he's still got the male exclusive.
Bryant: Hiromi did genuinely love Nagisa, but she also was under a heavy delusion. A delusion that her position as Nagisa's mother made her uniquely qualified to be the one who decided what was better for Nagisa, and how he should live his life. She wanted him to live the ideal life she never had, even if she had to force it onto him. This resulted in a childhood of abuse and feelings of low self-worth. Nagisa viewed himself as nothing but an unremarkable boy, who had no future.
Thea: Which was a pretty big contrast to Karma Akabane, his best friend. Karma was tall, big, smart, strong, handsome. Basically all the things Nagisa wasn't. He could do whatever he wanted, and no one could say otherwise.
Bryant: And for some reason, Karma decided, at least for a while, that he wanted to be friends with Nagisa. And for the period of time that they were friends, Nagisa felt as though he was standing tall, as someone with something to be proud of. Unfortunately, the life he had growing up resulted in something that he didn't really expected. A sort of dark side had manifested in Nagisa, something which made Karma feel threatened by. As such, in the second year, their friendship had essentially broken off. And Nagisa soon found himself dropping into Class E.
Thea: And there, Nagisa's life ended up being a lot better!

Thea: I mean sure, things looked a lot worse when the moon exploded and the culprit decided to teach his class. But Korosensei was the best teacher and authority figure in Nagisa's life!
Bryant: In this Assassination Classroom, Nagisa and his classmates were tasked with finding a way to eventually kill Korosensei in order to prevent the end of the world. And under the tutelage of Tadaomi Karasuma and Irina Jelavic, Nagisa learned the skill necessary to become an assassin!
Thea: We got all the classics. Firearms, explosives, chemistry, disguise, infiltration, negotiation, and even seduction!
Bryant: As a whole, Nagisa isn't really a standard brawler. He mainly relies on stealth, observing his victims in order to strike when their guards are down, taking them out with a single, precise, and efficient strike. Having grown up as an abused child, Nagisa had developed numerous abilities and skills which he found useful in his new life as an assassin.
Thea: Stuff like hiding his presence in order to avoid being seen by someone who would try to hurt him, or observing his target's emotional state to be aware of when they were going to attack. Man, that's kind of depressing that a kid would have to learn those kind of things.
Bryant: But unfortunately common in many abused children. Fortunately, Nagisa would be able to do good with these skills, though even should he be caught, he's well equipped to defend himself.
Thea: His primary fighting-style is most likely Self-Defense Forces Fighting, the standard combat style taught the Japanese Military, since his teacher, Karasuma, was an agent for the Ministry of Defense. It was used back during Imperial Japan!
Bryant: But the modern version is known as shinkakuto, and revolves around the assumption that modern weaponry wouldn't always be enough against threats like terrorists or guerilla fighters. Shinkakuto was built on the martial art Nippon Kempo, which has a focus on strikes, throws, and ground fighting. It emphasizes the usage of using all four limbs, immobilization, take-downs, blocks, throws, and joint locks. Much of which can be found in other martial arts like judo, jujutsu, and karate, making for a very well-rounded fighting-style.
Thea: But Nagisa definitely has his preferences when it comes to a fight. His best weapon when it comes to a fight is a knife, and Nagisa is at his best with a blade at hand. He usually uses one knife at a time, but he's got no problem with carrying two weapons with him.
Bryant: This would be thanks to his more advanced assassin training. Nagisa doesn't just learn from being taught, he learns from observing. For while other students are naturally talented and learned how to channel those talents into assassination, Nagisa's talent was straight up assassination!
Thea: From Lovro, the assassin teacher, Nagisa learned his signature technique, the Clap Stunner!
Bryant: Based on the real life Nekodamashi, the Clap Stunner revolves around stunning the enemy by disrupting their mind. It originally needed three specific conditions to achieve, but Nagisa has since been able to use it without needing any of them. This immobilizes their enemy for a second. Not much time, but more than enough for someone as precise and lethal as Nagisa.
Thea: Well, while Nagisa definitely prefers using knives in a fight, he's got way more than just those. Like a pair of stun guns, the more famous of which was a gift from his friend, Terasaka. This baby is strong enough to knock people out with just a single zap to the chin! And as a member of the Assassination Classroom, Nagisa also has access to things like smoke bombs, poisons, and even explosives strong enough to bust through a steel wall!
Bryant: Which he can obtain through his friends, as they all have access to the same resources.
Thea: That's what makes the Assassination Classroom above the rest. They weren't individual assassins competing with each other to be the best of the best like you expect from most media. Instead, Korosensei was determined to give the class a home and a family!
Bryant: Through each other, the members of Class E found the comfort and allies that many of them had either lost or been denied their entire lives. And with them, they were able to grow stronger. In Nagisa's case, the class and their teachers had become the loving family and warm home that he hadn't known for ten years.
Thea: So if someone like that bastard Akira Takaoka tries to take it away, you bet that he's gonna crash out. Which is a pretty big problem, cause under that bright smile and androgynous looks lied the natural killer instinct of an assassin.
Bryant: The Assassination Classroom as a whole had students who all had their own talents which they learned to apply to assassination. Kaede Kayano had a talent for acting, so she was skilled at going incognito. Ryunosuke Chiba had a talent of spatial calculations, so he became a sniper. But Nagisa was different. Rather than having a talent that he could apply to assassination, he discovered that his talent was assassination!
Thea: While other people usually get freaked out about accidentally killing someone when they hold a real knife in a fight for the first time, Nagisa was completely in his element. I mean, he's been in danger for his entire childhood, so he's used to not being safe.
Bryant: This nonchalance at the thought of killing is what made him so dangerous. He's so casual about holding weapons and performing assassinations that his opponents are stunned, to the point where they don't even realize that he's entering their range with a dangerous weapon. It's only when he swings it do they remember that they're a target for assassination.
Thea: The most dangerous attacks are the ones you don't see coming. But the scariest are the ones that you know are coming! And Nagisa's bloodlust might as well be a chicken screaming into a megaphone!
Bryant: Nagisa's bloodlust had been cultivated over an entire childhood of abuse, and had become so potent that it accompanies his every move. To the point where simply poking someone who doesn't expect it could make them feel as though they were impaled. Those who are aware of his bloodlust even start to hallucinate, seeing not a boy basically half their size, but a venomous and deadly viper ready to strike from their blind spot.
Thea: To sum up, Nagisa's talent for assassination revolves around the fact that he can trick people into thinking he's not trying to assassinate them with how casually he acts, and the fact that he can scare the shit out of them with his unleashed bloodlust. Both of which leave people open for Nagisa to get a winning shot.
Bryant: He's a true assassin through and through. His small size and body might mean that he's not physically strong compared to his classmates, but he doesn't rely on power. Instead, he's constantly analyzing his opponent and the situation at hand, always ready for the ideal moment to strike.
Thea: Not when he's angry though. When Takaoka made him think that his new friends and family were going to die of a horrible poison, Nagisa snapped, and ended up falling under the influence of his bloodlust. He was fully ready to kill, fully capable, and the scariest part was that he wasn't likely to regret it. This bloodlusted state made both Tadaomi Karasuma and Korosensei fully believe that Nagisa was going to kill Takaoka, an irreversible event that he could never take back. If he did, he wasn't going to be able to live a normal life like they wanted. Karasuma was genuinely afraid of the idea of Nagisa becoming an assassin.
Bryant: Nagisa thought he could make a literal killing as one, as it is his natural talent. A talent which allowed him to copy other assassination techniques and apply them in ways that are completely different from how they were originally used after only experiencing them once. Such as his ability to read and manipulate a person's mental wavelengths, allowing him to see their mental states and even force them back from a panic attack. He can even manipulate his own wavelengths to match another person's, disguising himself as just another extension of them, similar to how you don't usually realize you're wearing pants.
Thea: He learned and mastered that kind of bullshit technique after having it being explained to him once while he was half-conscious! Yeah, I think he's talented.
Bryant: And yet, Korosensei did not want Nagisa to lead such a life. Instead, he taught and advised Nagisa and his classmates in hope that this single year of assassination would be their last, and that they would instead use their gifts for the good of others. He showered them with genuine love and care, and Nagisa loved Korosensei like he would a father. As such, Nagisa resolved to use his gift for the good of others as opposed to his own personal gain.
Thea: And as proof of that and how much they progressed, Class E got a major upgrade in their gear with their P.E. Uniforms, which are lighter than regular clothes while still being highly shock, heat, rip, and force resistant! These things can absorb major hits without hurting the students, and not even crashing through windows or jumping off cliffs hurt them!
Bryant: Within a year, Nagisa transitioned from a lonely and abused child to one of the deadliest students of an entire class of prodigies. A timid young child to a genuinely deadly and skilled assassin dedicated to saving the world.
- Achievements:
- Ended the Assassination Classroom
- Endured a brutal beating from Takaoka
- Saved Kaede Kayano from getting blitzed
- Got the drop on all four of his teachers
- Took a hit from monster Shinigami
- Jumped out of a falling helicopter with Kayano and was fine
- Blitzed four students at once
- Defeated Karma Akabane in a one-on-one fight
Thea: We're talking about a kid who beat Takaoka with just three moves! The same Takaoka who spent the entire fight literally kicking Nagisa around, but despite the fact that a stronger student, Hiroto Maehara, was completely immobilized with a single hit from a less serious and less fit Takaoka, Nagisa didn't need more than a couple of seconds to get back up.
Bryant: Partially thanks to the fact that Nagisa is a true assassin through and through. Rather than seeking a long, drawn-out fight through pure martial arts, Nagisa is constantly waiting in the shadows, observing his opponent and looking for that one opening he needs to land a decisive and deadly blow.
Thea: It helps that Nagisa's ability to hide and disguise his actions and presence is so potent that he got the drop on all four of his teachers, whether it's going unnoticed from behind or managing to get the jump on them even when he's right in front of them!
Bryant: He was even able to trick Korosensei, who was previously the deadliest assassin in the world who possessed the ability to read the wavelengths of a person's mind just like Nagisa. And Nagisa was also tough enough to tank an explosion from Korosensei even from a point-blank range, which was calculated to be around 269 tons of TNT. Not only did he survive it, he was completely unharmed despite it being both early in the series, and done while he was in a pair of swimming trunks.
