Charles Montgomery Burns was born in the United States, on September 15, 1886, to Clifford and Daphne Burns. He was the second-youngest of 12 children, and was so amiable that his parents called him “Happy.” At a young age, he was sent to live with his paternal grandfather, Colonel Wainwright Montgomery Burns, a heartless billionaire who made Charles everything he later was.
After the mysterious deaths of all of his older siblings, Charles was left as the heir to the family fortune. Now as heartless as Wainwright ever was, Charles studied science and business at Yale University, and was inducted into the Skull and Bones secret society. He graduated in 1914.

Waylon Joseph Smithers Jr. is Mr. Burns’ utterly devoted Executive Assistant. Though Burns usually just calls Smithers, and does not show him much respect, the man is secretly sexually attracted to Mr. Burns. He is willing to do anything for his employer, even once going to prison in Morocco, for trying to obtain opium for him.
