Description[]
The border between fiction and nonfiction is rarely challenged. A video game is in a fictional world, same with a movie or a book. But sometimes that border can become damaged, sometimes something manages to become so real that it makes you rethink everything you know about how the world works. These two code-manipulating and reality-breaking programs will be battling it out to see who is truly the most special to you. Welcome to the 4th episode of DEATH BATTLE!
Disclaimer: This fight is not an ordinary fight. It includes many instances of link-traveling and the pre-fight is a bit of a confusing mess to get through. It's not a good casual read, so I'd recommend only reading if you are interested in the gimmicks, mechanics, and fourth-wall shattering shenanigans that I have in store.
Note from Jershy: Hello, yeah so I've found out that this fight isn't as good on mobile. For some reason the bit of code that serves to make you more immersed doesn't work. It still works as a fight, but for those who aren't logged in or are on mobile, there will be spots that say something like "It was a normal day for ". The blank is supposed to be filled in, but the code doesn't work when you are on mobile for some reason.
Interlude[]
Wiz: When you play a game, even a horror game, you will always know that you're safe, as you are real and everything in the game is not. But what if that illusion was broken? What if the game, was alive? And what if the living character was infatuated by you, and would do anything to keep you for themselves forever? Well, for those unlucky enough to play the games where our combatants come from, that what-if scenario became all too real.
Boomstick: Monika, the player-obsessed yandere from Doki Doki Literature Club.
Wiz: And Kinito, the "friendly" computer assistant from KinitoPet.
Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win a DEATH BATTLE!
Monika[]
Wiz: It's been a long day at work, and when you come home you want to do nothing but relax and play a simple game. So you look around Steam and find a brand new Dating Simulator, which intrigues you and you decide to buy it.
Boomstick: Little did you know, this purchase would be one of the worst mistakes you'll ever make. As hiding inside the game lies a corrupted and insane character who gained sentience, and they want nothing but to be with you forever.
Wiz: In the world of Doki Doki Literature Club, or DDLC for short, Monika is the leader of the literature club. She comes off as a kind and caring leader who wants to make sure the club is as entertaining and enjoyable for everyone in it. But underneath the kind and caring facade lies a tortured soul who has gained self-awareness, and wants nothing more than a single route within her own game.
Boomstick: After realizing that she's in a game, the first thing she does is see if she has her own story. And guess what, she's the only freakin' one who doesn't! So she gets understandably pissed off that she's nothing but a background character, and she is consumed by rage and jealousy.
Wiz: Over the course of DDLC, you, the player, are able to choose three different routes, each linked to a specific character. Each route has you grow closer and closer to the girl of your choice, and Monika seems to always be there, watching it unfold.
Boomstick: But out of the three routes, two end in tragedy. At the climax of Sayori's route, who is your childhood friend, the player finds her hanging in her room. Then during Yuri's route, she ends up killing herself as well!
Wiz: And it's not like Natsuki is safe either, as her route is completely interrupted by her suddenly getting corrupted, as if a glitch in the code of the game was destroying her character. Well, this glitch is soon revealed to not be a glitch at all, and is instead the handiwork of Monika.
Boomstick: So it turns out that after she gained self-awareness, Monika also learned how to manipulate the code of the game she was trapped in! That's why both Sayori and Yuri ended their own lives, because Monika wants to remove every other obstacle between herself and the player.
Wiz: What started as a few small changes in code quickly ballooned into complete reality control, and by the end of the game, Monika seems to have more power over the game than the player themself.
Boomstick: With Monika's manipulation of her game's code, she can do some pretty insane stuff. She can warp around the world at ease, possess other characters, manipulate the player's perception, and even alter the game's script to change what happens and what doesn't! And that's only the tip of the iceberg.
Wiz: Even with this vast and powerful arsenal, Monika has many weaknesses that ultimately led to her downfall. Her obsession with the player caused her to make brash decisions that weren't thought out, which helped lead to her downfall. She's also pretty new to the whole code-manipulation thing, so her work is prone to errors and it likely hinders her from accessing her full-potential.
Boomstick: She's also a petty brat, like THE pettiest brat you'll ever meet. I mean, when you defeat her by deleting her files from the game, she goes out of her way to bestow her knowledge and powers to Sayori, just so you can never enjoy the game! Like seriously, she is a Bitch with a capital B, followed by a capital I-T-C-H!
Wiz: She can also kinda resurrect herself by backing her files up. So it is likely that the transfer of power to Sayori was a mere distraction for the player, just so they wouldn't notice Monika coming back through backed-up files.
Boomstick: Aside from manipulating reality, Monika has some decent offensive abilities at her disposal. Her main form of attack is definitely her pyrokinesis, where she can, surprise surprise, manipulate and create fire.
Wiz: She doesn't really have anything else, as she's not much of a combat-oriented character. However her ability to summon the other three girls could come in handy, especially when you take into account what each of them have.
Boomstick: Natsuki is just a mean pushover, while Yuri is known for her excessive amount of knives. Sayori, ok Sayori is pretty useless in combat, but her friendly nature could be theoretically used to catch Monika's opponents off-guard.
Wiz: But at the end of the day, Monika is still a normal teenage girl. Sure she might have reality destroying powers, but she's still a mere teenager, meaning she's not the most athletic or durable person there is. She's pretty much just a glass cannon.
Boomstick: No matter what is in her way, nothing will stop her from being with her love forever, no matter what or who she will have to destroy. This is no ordinary digital girlfriend, this is Monika, the self-aware yandere.
"You'll never be able to understand one thing. It's the pain of knowing how alone I really am in this world, in this game. Knowing my friends don't even have free will... And worst of all, knowing what's really out there, in your world, forever out of my reach. I'm trapped. But now you're here. You're real, and you're wonderful. You're all I need. That's why I need you to be here with me forever."
Kinito[]
Wiz: In the early 2000s, when the internet was still new to most, computer assistants were common in most systems. These assistants were designed to aid your exploration through the internet, as well as make sure you're having fun and are entertained. Though a few of these assistants were deceiving, like the infamous Banzai Buddy, which secretly hid various malware in its systems.
Boomstick: That very situation is what the short indie horror game KinitoPet is all about. As the game progresses, Kinito becomes more and more malicious, and the game feels more and more real.
Wiz: Although Kinito may seem friendly at first, he is anything but friendly. When you first meet him, he reads you a story and asks questions so he can learn more about you, claiming that he's an "adaptive" assistant who can change based off your needs and interests.
Boomstick: And he's not too far from the truth, he is adaptive, just not in the way you want him to be. Let's use the first game you play as an example, being Kinito's Web World. In this minigame you have to decorate a house, construct some things, and play hide and seek.
Wiz: However each of these games are corrupted. The house you were decorating will suddenly be replaced by an old and decrepit shed, and you end up dragging a body bag across the bloody ground. Then, during Factory Frenzy, one of Kinito's friends Jade will glitch out more and more. At one point a liver will appear on the conveyor belt, and when you click it everything goes black and a jumpscare plays.
Boomstick: And then there's hide and seek, oh boy do I hate Hide and Seek. In this third and final minigame you are transported into a first-person style game, where you must avoid Kinito to survive. But eventually he'll find you, and the game crashes.
Wiz: It just gets more deranged, and as the game progresses Kinito shows off more of his impressive abilities. Due to his nature as a computer assistant, he is extremely powerful in a digital world. If given enough time, he can create whole worlds by only using code from apps on your computer.
Boomstick: Yeah, and he actually does do that near the end of the game! He creates an entire video game for you to explore.
Wiz: While that doesn't seem too impressive on paper, when you remember that for a digital being like himself, being able to create video games like that is extremely powerful. It's like creating entire new universes out of the scraps of other worlds.
Boomstick: Not only can he directly affect the digital world though, he can affect the real world too! Yeah, it gets way crazier than creating a small video game world.
Wiz: Earlier in the game, Kinito asks you a bunch of questions so he can get to know you better. At the end of the survey, he decides to go a bit off-script by asking you a truly terrifying question after pulling up two of your Steam friends. That question is, "Which of these would you kill?"
Boomstick: Click on one of them and HOLY SHIT I JUST KILLED MARSHAL! Yeah, that's right, whichever friend you pick gets shot!
Wiz: And he can do all this by just being himself. Sure he can seemingly get transported into the real world and stalk someone - or at least make it LOOK like he can - but he's still stuck in his digital world.
Boomstick: I don't think he minds though, actually it seems like it's quite the opposite in fact. He loves being digital, because in the digital world he can do so much more stuff! And by stuff, I mean trapping hundreds of his former "friends" inside his world so he can never run out of company. What a delightful little guy!
Wiz: Sure he can turn on your camera or notice if you are using OBS, but Kinito still has limitations. He might be able to forcefully crash the game, but he still can't do much outside of the game. That's where administrative privileges come in. Near the end of the game, Kinito will ask you to give him admin privileges, and once you click yes, all hell will break loose.
Boomstick: He traps you in the game forever, and, as heard in his song, he will have you as a friend forever!
Wiz: However there is a way to beat him, but it's very VERY difficult. Using an entirely different app you can find diffirent files scattered through the game, and once you have all of them and do specific things, the admin privileges question will return. This time, Kinito doesn't know what's in store for him.
Boomstick: He gets deleted, hell yeah! His code and files get erased and his reign of digital terror finally comes to an end.
Wiz: But even then, it's likely he isn't gone for good. Kinito is likely still out there seeking friends and trapping them in his web-world, and who knows, you might be his next target.
"I'm KinitoPet. However, you can just call me Kinito! And together, we are going to become the best of friends!"
Intermission[]
Wiz: Alright the combatants are set, we've run the data through all possibilities.
Boomstick: It's time for a DEATH BATTLE!
Pre-Fight[]
It was a normal day for , with nothing out of the ordinary. Sitting down on your desk, you decide to relax after a long day and play some games, maybe even research or write one of your highly anticipated DEATH BATTLES. However, when you turn on your computer, something feels... Off. There's two apps that weren't there before, and to make things more unnerving, they both are apps you deleted not too long ago.
One of the apps, with a pink-egg shaped icon, is called KinitoPet.EXE. You remember what happened last time, how you almost let the axolotl gain administrative privileges. You shudder at the thought of Kinito returning, but you shrug it off and drag it to the recycle bin. However, it reappears a few moments later, as if nothing happened. Frustrated, you drag it back and make sure to empty the bin, but it still returns only seconds later. The computer starts to hum as a loading icon appears over your cursor, and in the top of your screen you see the words
"KinitoPet.EXE booting up....
You're at a loss for words, you can't believe this thing is not just back, but restarting itself. You frantically try to delete it, but it's too late, the egg has started to hatch. Out from the egg emerges an axolotl-like creature, with long black legs and big white eyes. It looks directly at you, then starts to speak.
"Hello, , I am back!"
Its voice sends a shiver down your spine, and you audibly gulp. The axolotl then speaks once more.
"I see you've been playing other games without me... I'm supposed to be your best friend!" It says, and you can see it eyeing the second app that had appeared. This one's icon doesn't look too strange, just a pink box with the logo on it, giving off visual-novel/dating simulator vibes. The title of the app, "Doki Doki Literature Club," seems to pique the axolotl's interest.
"A literature club, is that a writing game? Let's check it out together, and see your writing skills!" It says as a floating hand flies out from a corner of the screen and hovers above the new app, clicking on it. Your breath sharpens as it boots up, and a moment later the window is filled with a familiar and unsettling sight. The first thing that gets your attention is the focal point of the window, a girl with light brown hair and green eyes, wearing a typical Japanese highschool outfit. She's looking directly at you with a smile, hiding whatever emotion she's feeling behind her expression.
"Hello , it's been a while." She says, resting her head on her hands. "I noticed you deleted the game... Why is that, I thought we had something special..."
A pop-up box appears, giving you two different dialogue options to pick from.
I got bored of the game.
It turned out to be a virus.
Monika waits patiently for your answer.

Kinito's my best friend[]
"Wow, thank you so much ! I am glad to be your best friend!" Kinito says with happy expression. Her eyes narrow and her brow furrows, "There's only supposed to be me and , just the two of us... Best friends aren't allowed!"
The window starts to shake violently as your computer screen starts to glitch. Kinito looks around nervously and confused as to what's going on, and no matter how many times you try to close the DDLC window, it won't close.
"It's just me and you, nobody else can get in the way! and Monika, nobody else, just us two!" The girl yells in anger as everything starts going haywire.
The border to the window starts to crack as it shakes faster and faster, and then it forces itself into full-screen. Kinito's nowhere to be seen, but a second later he glitches into the screen, "She is not a very nice friend, I hate mean friends."
"I am not their friend, I am 's true and only lover! And I am not willing to share!"
"Lover, you say? If you were truly their lover, you would let them spend time with their best friend. If you can't share.... Then neither can I..."
The screen is black, with nothing but Kinito in sight. Everything goes eerily quiet, making your heart race in anticipation. Then suddenly it explodes with color, pink filling the screen as a familiar tune plays. The menu for DDLC appears, but none of the characters are on the right side like normal, not even Monika.
"Hmm, oh a game! I love games, let us play!" Kinito says, moving a cursor to press the start button. The screen glitches and goes black once more, leaving you and Kinito in silence. Green strings of binary fade into view above Kinito, and the axolotl seems to notice this too. Before they can question it, however, the strings suddenly pull up off the top of the screen, pulling Kinito out of your view.
The screen starts to glitch, and eventually it opens up to show the Literature Club Classroom. Monika is standing up at the front like a teacher, and Kinito seems to have spawned sitting at a desk.
"Only one of us can have !" Monika says with hands on her hips.
"I am 's best friend, I will not let you hurt them!" Kinito responds as the screen gets more glitchy.
The two stare at each other, nobody saying anything as you watch in anticipation and a bit of excitement. The tension grows between the two obsessive AIs, both ready to prove just how dedicated they are to you.
"I won't let you take away!" They both yell at the same time.
Fight![]

Trivia[]
- The core connections between the two characters are: Main antagonists in horror games pretending to be other media (DDLC as a dating sim and KinitoPet as a computer assistant [Although KinitoPet doesn't really hide the fact it's twisted, it still counts). They are both self-aware AIs who are obsessed with the player and want to be with them forever (Monika loves you while Kinito wants you trapped as a friend in his code). Both have killed their friends in order to reach their goals (Monika killed Sayori, Natsuki, and Yuri to make it just her, and it's implied Kinito killed Jade and Sam for unknown reasons). Both commonly manipulate, create, and destroy files on either the game or your computer. Both can only be defeated by deleting their file (Literally in Monika's case). At the end of their respective games, both become "God-like" beings in their worlds (Monika has complete control over her game, Kinito gains administrative privileges).
- This is the fourth episode of Jershy's Season One, while being the 5th overall Death Battle he has written for the wiki.
- Counting DBXs and his old Death Battles, this is technically his 11th Death Battle
- This is one of, if not the only fight, that is told in 2nd person, with the reader being the main character.
- This is also the first and currently only fight that allows the reader to directly interact with the fight.
- Not counting the Season Finale, this is the last fight of Season 1 to not be teased by the Cipher Wheel, as the next 8 are all yet-to-be announced
- This is likely the only fight where reading it on mobile is a detrement to the experience. This is thanks to a special code that shows your username when you are on the page, but it doesn't work on mobile for some reason.
- That code is also how Jershy was make it so everyone sees their own username instead of just "Jershy" or "User".
