Mister Mxyzptlk (pronounced: mix-yeez-spit-lick) is a supervillain from DC Comics, and an imp from the fifth dimension.

History[]

Originally from the Fifth Dimension, not bound by the physical laws of realities below his own, Mxyzptlk and his kind have had a long history of visiting Earth among other planets and have inspired various myths of imps, genies and leprechauns. A jester where he came from, Mxyztplk first presents himself to Superman while wreaking havoc across Metropolis with his numerous pranks and is amazed to find a Kryptonian among humans and made it his goal to annoy Superman while giving him a sporting chance to send him to his dimension by tricking him into saying his name backwards.

As a resident of the 5th Dimension, he claims to "possess power 'two degrees of infinity' higher than any normal beings". Possessing Toon-logic, immortality and instantaneous healing factor, Mxyzptlk is essentially immortal and cannot be killed by normal conditions. And if he is somehow killed, Mxyzptlk will simply reincarnate.

He also possesses nigh unlimited reality warping powers that allowed him to perform a multitude of acts.

  • Materialization of virtually anything (including other lifeforms and kryptonite)
  • Bewitching objects to become alive (turning the Daily Planet into a baby).
  • Shape, size, molecular alteration or cloning of himself or anything else.
  • Elemental powers, control of the weather.
  • Can merge with static images, like comic books or billboards
  • Can alter history and memories of both his opponents and himself

    • Immune to time manipulation
  • Unaffected by the conventional laws of physics within the 3rd dimension

      • After being killed by Bada-Bing-Bada-Boomsday; Mxyzptlk revived himself by asking Mike Carlin to rewrite him back into the comics. [2]

  • Caused chaos throughout the multiverse for an immeasurable amount of time.

  • Eventually broke through and escaped Mr. Oz's prison, despite the fact that the Negative Space should be able to negate magic and reality warping. (DC Rebirth)

    • This was implied again when the Joker took 99% of his powers and manipulated Spectre {1}
  • (With assistance from Superman and Spectre) Mxyzptlk repaired all the damage Emperor Joker did to the universe in only 5 hours.

Flaws[]

  • Can be banished from our dimension.
    • Mister Mxyzptlk will return to the Fifth dimension for 90 days if he says, spells or reveals his name backwards (Kltpzyxm), which usually required him to be tricked. Superman easily outsmarts Mxyzptlk in the majority of their encounters.
      • Once spend 90 days heavily arming himself with 5th dimensional warsuit to take out Superman before he could be tricked, only to end up back in the Fifth Dimension a few seconds after leaving.
      • When Supergirl activated the Fortress of Solitude's self destruct with her in it, taking advantage of his obsession for her, she tricked Mxyzptlk into triggering the cancelation code which is his name spelled backwards.
    • Magical characters like Dr. Fate can banish Mister Mxyzptlk to other dimensions like The Void.
  • Mxyzptlk can lose his magic, rendering him mortal and weak.
    • Got tricked into losing his powers by the Joker.
    • Characters or weapons who are at an advantage against magical users can be a threat to him. This includes; disabling his magic, being immune to his magic or destroying magic and magical beings.
      • Annataz Arataz (Zatanna's evil twin from another universe) disabled Mxyzptlk's magic, which is how Superboy-Prime was able to torture him.
        • Prime also has no weakness to magic, hence why he was able to kidnap Mxyzptlk so easily.
      • Got his magic sucked out by a 5th Dimension pendant Mon-El possessed, though he later stole it and restored his powers within a minute of its use.
      • Characters that can copy or steal powers (like Parasite) can take away Mxyzptlk's magic. [13]
      • Was captured by Mr. Oz. Negative Space nullifies his power, which is how Mr. Oz kept him imprisoned. [14]
  • Other godlike reality warpers like Trigon and Doctor Manhattan can match Mxyzptlk's power[15].
    • In his own 5th dimension, Mxyzptlk is just as powerful as any other citizen. As such, he can be killed by other 5th dimensional imps (as seen with Vyndktvx).
      • Mister Mxyzptlk can have his magic taken from the Superior Beigns of the 5th Dimension. The Superiors are provoked if Mxyzptlk violates a 5th dimensional law of conduct. [16]
  • Can be killed by splitting him across dimensions. When Superman tried to send Mxyzptlk into the Phantom Zone, Mxyzptlk said his name backwards to try to escape; instead he was destroyed by the simultaneous split. [17]
  • When Mxyzptlk created Bada-Bing-Bada-Boomsday he accidentally made him too powerful and so was beaten to death by him. [18] (although Mxyzpltk asked Mike Carlin to undo his death) [19]
    • Mxyzptlk was killed because he relinquished his magical powers; becoming mortal. He had to give up his magic in order to die so that Bada-Bing-Bada-Boomsday would die with him (as Boomsday was his creation). [20]
  • Mxyzptlk is so powerful that he almost never fights to kill his enemies; instead to troll and annoy them.
  • Mister Mxyzptlk fears other characters of absurd power, as seen when he feared Superboy-Prime and Doctor Manhattan.
  • Godly Magic capable of killing immortals can harm or kill Mister Mxyzptlk: as seen with Gog's staff the Lancing Spear. [21]
  • Mxyzpltk delusionally thinks that he is one of Superman's best friends, despite Superman always seeing him as a nuisance.

Trivia[]

  • Mxyzptlk's powers are either based on magic or from technology; depending on the canon. The technology is so advanced that it would be considered magical by our definition of 3rd dimensional logic and physics. Either way, it's still related to his 5th dimension origin.
  • Mxyzptlk claims that the 5th Dimension is the dimension of imagination: which might explain his 'toon' nature.
  • If Mxyzptlk lost his magic, nothing happens if he says his name backwards. [22]
  • Mxyzptlk has the most consistent voice-actor of any Superman villain and any DC villain other than the Joker by Mark Hamill: Gilbert Gottfried, voicing the character since 1996.
