Description[]
Fate vs. Rising of the Shield Hero. A battle of shields and insane defensive capabilities between the Shielder Class Servant and the Hero of the Shield.
Introduction[]
Wiz: Mashu Kyrielight, the Shielder-Class Servant.
Boomstick: Naofumi Iwatani, the Hero of the Shield.
Wiz: They say the best defence is a good offense but an actual defence can itself be a winning strategy.
Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armour and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle.
Mashu Kyrielight[]
Wiz: In the world of Fate, there exists an organisation of Magi, Chaldea Security, dedicated to making sure history remained on track to prevent Singularities in causing the extinction of humanity.
Boomstick: A "certain" extinction they say. And since this is a world where historical figures and legends are powerful independant warriors, they can either be the solution to or cause of those Singularities. You know them as Servants, or Heroic Spirits.
Wiz: In the latter scenario, the best way to fight against a history alterting Heroic Spirit is to use a Heroic Spirit yourself. And this is exactly what Chaldea did themselves.
Boomstick: Heck, one of their executive officiers is Leonardo Da Vinci. Who's a woman because of anime. But for the uniqueness of the Singularities so did they have a unique Servant at their beck-and-call. The Servant Class Shielder.
Wiz: Which had only one member; Mashu Kyrielight, an artifically grown human created to be a vessal for a disembodied Heroic Spirit.
- Background
- Height: 5'1
- Age: 19
- Servant Class: Shielder
- Master: Ritsuka Fujimaru
- Host of Sir Galahad
- Has Beast 4 as a pet
Boomstick: The literal term for what she was is a Designer Baby. And she was designed to be the host for Sir Galahad for the Arthurian Legend.
Wiz: That's not to say she wasn't in the long run designed to prevent the collapse of human history. Alongside her Master Ritsuka Fujimaru.
Boomstick: Who she calls senpai so much you can pretty much immediately tell this is a Japanese production. Anyway, the numerous Singularities enabled Mashu and her Senpai to show they were up to the task of stopping them.
Wiz: And with Galahad now inside of her - in a spiritual way I'd like to stress - Mashu was now able to wield his Noble Phantasm, Lord Camelot, which is pretty much the whole reason her unique class was Shielder. Come to think of it, makes it kind of odd that Galahad wasn't already a Shielder since he has the shield Lord Camelot.
Boomstick: Oh who cares for semantics? Lord Chamelot was one heck of a unique shield. You see, it was created from the Round Temple itself and so was imbued with the concept of heroes gathering, which enables Mashu to summon other Servants to help her and Senpai out, wow that feels really akward to say.
Wiz: And Lord Camelot has two different forms it can take on; the weaker Lord Chaldeas and the true Lord Camelot, invoked in all its glory with its true name.
Boomstick: Too bad she ended up losing it. At some point, Galahad decided to bail on the Singularity-prevention squad and so the real Lord Camelot was lost to her. Fortunately, the company had a back-up solution; Ortenaus.
- Ortenaus
- Supplements Servant powers
- Can detect magic
- Skills
- Magic Resistance
- Riding
- Self-Field defence
- Mana defence
- Exalted Impervious Wall of Snowflakes
- Obscurant Wall of Chalk
- Shield of Rounding Resolution
- Mold Camelot
- Rank: D
- Type: Anti-Unit
- Powerful conceptual defence
- Black Barrel
- Powerful cannon-like weapon
- Destroys magical substances
Wiz: Ortenaus is a battle suit designed to empower Demi-servants to the rank of, well, full Servants. And in doing so, gifts Mashu with a weakened version of Lord Camelot; Mold Camelot.
Boomstick: Because second-rate things are often left to collect mold, so the name makes perfect sense.
Wiz: Now, whilst Mold Camelot is weaker than Lord Camelot, it is still stronger than Lord Chaldeas in spite of sharing the same D rank, considering it's able to block attacks from divine-level beings.
Boomstick: And any of the shields that channel the Noble Phantasm can make pretty good bludgeoning weapon. Especially those spokes all around it, which can be used to cut through a beast. But even though Mold Camelot is considered a downgrade, Ortenaus comes with something that is a definite upgrade; the Black Barrel. Built onto the shield itself, the Black Barrel is able to fire shots that break down magical substances. What's more, that means the more magic someone has, like an immortal or a god, the more damage it will do. So I say Galahad leaving had a good payoff, even if she now looks like a VR gamer. Heck, she still seems to have all her Servant skills.
Popup: Mana defence was attained through another Skill that enabled Mashu to learn the abilities of the Servant possessing her and should no longer have it due to Galahad leaving.
Wiz: A lot of Mashu's skills, personal or class based, are based around defence. She can resist magic attacks of a certain level, increase her defences proportionate to the amount of allies she has on hand and even temporarily place herself out of the time axis to avoid attacks altogether. She can draw attacks towards herself to prevent her allies from taking damage and make use of her willpower and mental strength to increase either their defences or her own.
Boomstick: Man, with all her abilities themed around durability, you'd think her Noble Phantasm would be a Pro-Unit instead of Anti-Unit. Get it?
Wiz: Since Ortenaus is a technological marvel, albeit clearly with some magical components, I've managed to replicate it for DUMMI.
Boomstick: What! Why?
Wiz: Uh, for research.
Boomstick: Yeah, and the research we use DUMMI for involves destroying him! How are we meant to do that if he's invincible!
Wiz:...Oh crap.
DUMMI: Hoist by your own petard there Master Wizard.
Boomstick: Well, now we're saddled with an invincible pessimistic robot. Great.
- Feats
- Helped resolve eight Singularities
- Deflected Saber Alter's attack with Lord Chaldeas
- Blocked Ivan's lightning with Mold Camelot
- Nullified Goetia's attack with Lord Camelot
- Blocked Attila's Photon Beam
- Defeated Berserker Lancelot, Saber Lancelot, a weakened Goetia
Wiz: In whatever team, consisting of herself, Ritsuka and other servants, Mashu always filled the role of protecting her teammates thanks to her amazing defences. And of course, she has the track record to prove it.
Boomstick: Even with her whole shtick being based on protection, she's no slouch when it comes to fighting. In fact, all by herself she was able to defeat Lancelot, who's as strong and tough as the mountain-busting Heracles. And without the speed to lift her shield up to use it, she'd be as good as day.
Wiz: And without it being tough, she's most certainly be dead. Even her weakest shield was able to deflect a blast from Saber Alter's Excalibur Morgan, a highly ranked Noble Phantasm of the likes that can output enough power to destroy New Orleans. Such a feat needs 3 teratons of TNT (RetroWeeeb) to pull off and again, that's just the weakest level of her shield. The following forms have so much defensive power, they can tank attacks from things well-above the physical realm.
Boomstick: Like Geotia, a higher-dimensional entity belonging to the Fate tiers which give us the most headaches. This freak's Noble Phatasm is just one big overkill; it encircles an entire planet, unleashes thousands of millions of beams that each pack as much power as Excalibur and is able to damage the past, present and future. And guess what? Lord Camelot blocked the entire thing, going completely unscathed in the process. Just like-
Wiz: Mashu died nearly instantly.
Boomstick: What!? But the shield...?
Wiz: Yeah...the thing is whilst the shield can protect her from attacks from the front, the after effects around Mashu can still get to her. The heat left by Goetia's attack was too much for her. Fortunately, she was later revived and this time around, with a normal human's lifespan.
Boomstick: Good for her! And hey, she and her Master even found the most impossible thing of all.
Wiz: A Holy Grail?
Boomstick: No; a Gilgamesh who wasn't an absolute turd. And each time a Singularity reered its ugly head, Mashu was right there to defend her allies and fight to save humanity. What else can you expect for a class as unique as Shielder?
Naofumi Iwatani[]
Wiz: The Kingdom of Melromarc, existing in a parallel world, was under threat from a constant series of invasions due to the monster summoning Waves.
Boomstick: It's like the horde mode in a video game only on a much more massive scale that was way less managable. In fact, the only way to most effectively combat the Waves was through four Cardinal Heroes, each one bearing a different legendary weapon.
Wiz: There were the Hero of the Spear, Hero of the Bow, Hero of the Sword and the Hero of the Shield. And in order to get those weapons assigned and put to good use, Melromarc summoned who they percieved would be the best users of them.
Boomstick: Four weebs from another world. And the one to get the shield was one Naofumi Iwatani.
- Background
- Age: 20
- Height: est. 5'8
- Former university student
- Summoned as the Shield Hero
- Can no longer get drunk
Wiz: Naofumi was originally a university student who got to live with his folks free of charge thanks to helping out his brother with arduous studies. Content with his lot in life, he certainly wasn't expecting to get whisked off to another world upon opening a random book. But then again nobody does.
Boomstick: Although fairly confused at his new situation, he nevertheless took it in stride, ready to do his part in protecting this strange new world. Unfortunately however, being the Shield Hero came with a set of issues.
Wiz: Unlike the rest of the Cardinal Heroes, the position of Shield Hero wasn't as positively viewed, with many seeing it as the patron of the strange and not-to-fondly regarded Demihumans. The King in particular had a grudge against the species due to their precieved role in the death of his sister. So with the machinations of the King, the Three Heroes Church and that utter load of garbage Princess Malty, Naofumi found his name dragged through the mud pretty much immediately. But ironically, this can be described as the moment when he transitioned into the most effective Cardinal Hero.
Boomstick: Since Naofumi wasn't going to get any special treatment, unlike the other Heroes, and being forced to start at the bottom, he worked hard with newfound cynical determination. That's how he found out he had a pretty effective pain tolerance.
Wiz: As befitting a shield user, Naofumi's shield can create a force-field around his body to protect him from attacks at any angle. Even with the drawback of not being an outright solo fighter, hence his need to buy slaves to do his fighting for him, Naofumi's shield was still an effective tool in its own right and not just in blocking.

Boomstick: Not only can it show Naofumi his own stats but it can also inform him about the status effects afflicting other individuals.
Wiz: Not only that, but the Shield also possesses impressive shape-shifting capabilities through either two means. One, the Shield can become and take on the abilities of other shields Naofumi touches. Or two, by implanting the remains of monsters or items into the Shield, Naofumi can unlock a series of alternate forms it can take on, with all manner of abilities.
Boomstick: He has a whole lot dedicated to supporting his teammates in battle, even one that temporarily turns them into a Demi-beast form for an increase in power. But in a one-on-one fight, he finds creative ways to make use of his other shields.
Wiz: For example, Airstrike Shield summons a construct of a giant green shield, which can be used as a battering ram or as an additional platform to jump off of. Real useful applications and there are some Shields that can actually counterattack.
Boomstick: Chimera Viper Shield will attack an offender with venomous snakes but what is an arguably more deadly counter-weapon is the Soul Eater Shield, which can actually steal magical energy from those who hit its surface.
Wiz: It also had the added power of enabling Naofumi to phase through solid objects.
Boomstick: Naturally, someone with a good defence would know how to get through someone else's. There's also the Bee Needle Shield which shoots out paralysing darts and the Bio Plant Shield which enables him to diddle around with plants.
Wiz: With Portal Shield, Naofumi can teleport himself or others to a pre-set teleportation sight, although there's an hour's cooldown between each use, and the Shield of the New Seven Sins even enables the modification of genes and a person's pysche. And after besting the Spirit Tortoise, he got a shield that enables him to control gravity and fires powerful beams. But when he wants to get to truly high levels of defence, the Shooting Star Shield can form a 2 meter shield that only Naofumi or his allies can pass through.
Boomstick: And the Nue Shield has the power to let Naofumi plunge a person in their mental nightmares. Man, we really are saying "shield" a lot. And we're not done because Naofumi is able to create a Shield Prison to trap opponents in.
Wiz: Speaking of which, perhaps Naofumi's most dangerous set of series is the one made from his own negative emotions; the Curse Series. By tapping into his anger, hatred and grudges, Naofumi can transform his Shield into one that enables to him truly attack, and with devastating effect.
Boomstick: He can shoot of cursed fire at anyone foolish enough to attack him or trap them inside of an Iron Maiden. And by nearly bleeding himself dry with a blood sacrifice, he can summon a giant bear trap snake that reduces anyone caught in it to a puddle.
Wiz: Being so dangerous, it's not something Naofumi can always rely on. Fortunately, aside from his normal shields he also has a collection of other abilities.
- Abilities and Magic
- Hengen Muso Style
- Fast Guard
- Fast Heal
- Zweite Aura
- All Sacrifice Aura
- Magic Assistance
- E. Float Shield
Boomstick: He can throw a dart that causes double the damage to the struck opponent next time they're harmed, can increase his or others' defences, and quickly heal his wounds.
Popup: Naofumi temporarily possessed a Seven Star Rod and a spell that could Decay anything touched but that was only when he couldn't use his Shield.
Wiz: Most impressive though is a mastery of a nearly-forgotten martial art, the Hengen Muso Style. With it, Naofumi sends his own life energy into a person's body, dealing internal damage proportionate to their level of defence. The perfect ironic ability for such a defensive-based warrior.
- Feats
- Reacted to and blocked Photon-based attacks
- Restricted the movements of the Spirit Tortoise
- Walked around with monsters chewing him
- Defended a village from a wave
- Redirected Madea's Infinity Destroyer with Shield of 0
- Defeated Motoyasu, the High Priest, Glass, Madea
Boomstick: And defensive he is! Not just in personality mind.
Wiz: His shields were strong enough to withstand a blast from the High Priest's counterfeit Cardinal weapons, which left a massive crater with a blast worth 23 kilotons of TNT (Firestorm808). What's more, every attack by the Priest was said to be made out of protons, meaning they would be moving at light speeds.
Boomstick: Good reactions are needed for blocking an attack in time and there are tons of other examples of Naofumi blocking powerful attacks, or at the very least being in the same league as the ones doing the attacks. Like our previously mentioned Spirit Tortoise, who's particle team, yet against another theoretical light-speed based attack, was able to completely destroy a mountain.
Wiz: Hell, the Tortoise is able to carry an entire mountain as its shell and Naofumi was able to restrict its movements with sheer strength alone. And in spite of being the Hero of an item not well-associated with offense, Naofumi has handled himself in fights on his lonesome.
Boomstick: Like when he fought that dumbass Hero of the Spear and proceeded to utterly humiliate him, in spite of the tool having superior stats. And the tool I mean isn't the Spear.
Wiz: Naofumi would even go on to attain godhood and use the Shield of 0 to destroy the goddess behind the waves, Madea, by sending her own attack back at her. But the path there wasn't exactly forgiving, especially with the slandering. In fact it left such a mark he outright banned romantic courting in the village he set up.
Boomstick: It's a good thing his so-called-slaves were able to help his still golden heart shine through.
Wiz: Whenever the time came, it wasn't just a shield that rose up, or was risen up. It was Naofumi himself who stood up in defence of his new world.
The Battle[]
Wiz: Alright the combatants are set, time to end this debate once and for all.
Boomstick: It's time for a Death Battle!
Outcome[]
Setting: Countryside road
Naofumi travelled across the countryside in his wagon pulled by Filo, with Raphtalia sitting sleepily next to him. Just as his own eyes began to grow heavy, a burst of light appeared before them. Filo yelled in surprise and jumped backwards, crashing into the wagon and leaving only Naofumi still concious in its wreckage. Out of the spot where the bright light had shone stepped out Mashu, who cringed at the minute amount of chaos she had caused.
Mashu: I'm, uh, really sorry!
Naofumi: Sorry?!
Old feelings of rage and resentment bubbled back up in Naofumi as he strode from the wreckage of his wagon.
Naofumi: Sorry doesn't cut it for those who impede me!
Realizing she was just started a fight, Mashu steeled herself and readied her shield as Naofumi did the same with his, pointing it directly at her.
FIGHT!
Naofumi: Air Strike Shield!
The green construct was projected in front of its summoner as Mashu charged forwards, intending to ram into Naofumi with his shield; seeing it, Mashu brought her shield in front of her to prevent herself from slamming into it, resulting in her stumbling backwards at the impact. Naofumi smirked before pulling away his cloak, revealing three Balloon Monsters chomping on his numb flesh that detached and swarmed towards Mashu. The Demi-Servant had to swing her shield around about herself to block the Balloons as they jumped at each, preventing them from sinking their teeth into her flesh. When all three of them jumped at the same time, she was able to swing her shield down to crush them all beneath its flat surface. Naofumi took advantage of her vulnerable position to charge forwards and summon up another Air Strike Shield, which Mashu was able to block in the nick of time, although she was still pushed backwards a second time. And with the construct still present, Naofumi jumped off it to launch himself into the sky and come down at Mashu with a downwards swing of his shield. Once again, this was an attack that Mashu was able to block, forcing Naofumi to land back on the ground.
This time, it was his turn to defend, doing so against Mashu's shield bash and holding against it spite of his shield before smaller. In fact, he suddenly changed its appearance to that of the Chimera Viper Shield and because it was pressing right against a rival shield, it recognized it as an attack. Thus, the snakes uncoiled and bit down against the surface of Mashu's shield, serving as additional means for Naofumi to push against it. With a grunt, he started pushing against Mashu, driving her backwards before he was able to use the snakes and his own effort to wrench Mashu's defence to the side. Mashu retaliated against this by attempting to punch Naofumi but he was able to bring his shield around to block it, transforming it into Bee Needle Shield, the pricks piercing her knuckles. Mashu hissed in pain and drew backwards, feeling some numbness in her arm before Naofumi thrusted his hand out again.
Naofumi: Shield Prison!
The Demi-Servant was suddenly encassed in a metal sphere, cutting her off from the outside world. But not entirely however; as Naofumi was just racking his brain on how to use this to his advantage, he noticed the giant spoke of Mashu's shield was sticking out, too big for the sphere to enclose. The Shielder used this is wrench the Shield Prison all the way open, freeing herself to launch forwards and slam one of her side spokes into Naofumi's body. Bone broke inside of the Shield Hero as he was launched backwards, barely able to remain on his feet as he coughed blood. Fortunately for him, his healing ability kicked in to repair the damage and as Mashu lifted her shield up to attack with it again, he had another trick to spring. Switching to his Teleportation Shield, Naofumi vanished from Mashu's sight, appearing behind her in the wreckage of his wagon, where he had placed the marker before challenging Mashu. In the Shielder's confusion, Naofumi switched to his Nue Shield and activated Night Terror.
Mashu was instantly assaulted by a demonic voice, causing her to clutch at her head and scream in pain.
Night Terror: Singularities will destroy all...you will fail...fail your senpai...
As Naofumi increased the scream of Night Terror, intending to destroy Mashu's psyche, the Demi-Servant's nature slowly enabled her to struggle against it until, with a defiant yell, she utilized Obscurant Wall of Chalk, slipping out of the time stream and letting her escape Night Terror.
Naofumi: What?
He canceled out Night Terror in confusion and Mashu thus reappeared, charging at the Shield Hero with a yell. His eyes went wide with pain and surprise as she drove the largest spoke into his back, sending him flying onto his front. He rolled over and watched as Mashu swung that largest spoke down and smashed the earth apart in the process of driving it through Naofumi's chest.
There was no damage done to him however, seeing as how his whole body turned intangible with the Soul Eater Shield's power. And with Mashu confused at this, Naofumi attempted to drain her of her spiritual energy. But yet again, her nature as a Servant prevented it from being truly effective.
Naofumi: Hmm...you possess some unusual abilities.
Mashu: Well, I am an unusual Servant!
She drew back her fist and punched Naofumi with an upper cut that launched him off the ground, through her shield thanks to his intangilibity, and high into the air.
Naofumi: She touched me even with Wall Escape! I'll need something for effective to take her down.
Still in the air, he summoned his Spirit Tortoise Spirit and pointed it at Mashu, tapping into its gravity control abilities and in true fashion, Mashu floated upwards against her will. Try as she might, she was unable to find some leeway in her new situation. And as she turned and thrashed in the sky, Naofumi kept his shield pointed at her.
Naofumi: Block this!
He fired a powerful laser down towards Mashu, who was only able to order herself about to bring her shield around, ready to block the laser. Even when tapping into every defence-boosting Ability that would work on her, she still felt the full impact of the beam as it hit her shield, propelling her downwards to smash against the ground hard enough to leave a deep wide crater.
Even after being essentially flattened beneath her own shield, Mashu still found the strength get back to her feet, panting heavily and dirty and bruised as Naofumi landed in front of her.
Naofumi: You're still going? Well, we'll just have to see if you're tough enough to take this!
He flicked his arm out and a dart flew from his hand to hit Mashu in the shoulder, just before she could bring her shield around. As she grimaced, Naofumi charged forwards and swung out his shield, knocking aside Mashu's thanks to her injured state and shoulder, before driving his fist into her stomach. He tapped into his Hengen Muso Martial Art, sending his life force into her body and wrecking havoc on her insides. Mashu screamed in pain, blood flying from her mouth as she flew backwards, crashing onto her back. Naofumi straightened back up but in spite of his critical hit on Mashu, his feelings of anger had been too greatly stoked by the battle.
Thus, his anger transformed his shield into its Curse Form. As Mashu staggered back to her feet, Naofumi activated Blood Sacrifice; as Blood erupted from his body, a series of giant linked beartraps burst from the ground in front of him and circled around Mashu, before shooting straight towards her.
As it approached, jaws open wide, Mashu closed her eyes and started incanting the creed of Mold Camelot, finishing it with yelling the name of her Noble Phantasm;
Mashu: Mold Camelot!
Etherial castle walls were summoned around her, just in time to catch the encircling chain of the Beartrap, stopping it short of biting into her. Naofumi gritted his teeth in anger, even ignoring the blood leaking out of himself. As he attempted to use this blood to empower the Chainsaw - and sure enough it was able to slowly get longer and move towards Mashu - Mashu unveiled the Black Barrel and pointed it directly at the gaping jaws of the Beartrap. With a rising yell, she charged up a blast and unleashed it.
With it's magic destroying ability, the blast burned through the Beartrap and continued towards Naofumi. In surprise, Naofumi was able to bring himself out of his rage and summoned Shield of 0, bracing it front of himself with gritted teeth.
It was an effort in vain, unfortunately, as the blast also burned through that shield, not to mention the Shield Hero himself, leaving behind only a torso with a smouldering top. As Mashu's building contructs faded away, it crumbled down and Mashu lifted her visor to breath in relief. Behind her, a massive crack suddenly appeared in the sky, signaling the start of a Wave. Mashu turned to face the crack, frowning, and slid her visor back down with a significant click.
KO!
Next Time[]
Boomstick: You know, for two people who specialize in defence, this really did feel like a real slug fest. Although considering the advantage of having a good defence, maybe that's to be expected.
Wiz: Indeed it was. Although in that area, it was ultimately Mashu who had the edge.
Boomstick: Naofumi was able to battle the likes of the Spirit Tortoise, who could destroy a mountain. Such a feat needs a gigaton of TNT to pull off at most but Mashu's shield had it beat. After all, it could withstand and even deflect attacks from the highest ranked Noble Phantasm's, which can match 3 teratons of TNT. Making Mashu's defenses at least 3 thousand times better than Naofumi's.
Wiz: It wasn't just through her shield that Mashu had the durability advantage but also through her own body. After all, she was able to battle against Lancelot by herself and there are VS wiki arguments stating that base Servant strength stats are a third as powerful as mountain-busting Paul Bunyan's Noble Phantasm. And through our own calculation, the one that determines the level of increases in durability Heracle's God Hand gives him per death of at least 2 times, with the amount of times an A+ Ranked Noble Phantasm killed him, seven, compared to how normal Servant strength was inaffective, then it holds up.
Boomstick: Long story short, that divided power is, or starts at, 26 gigatons of TNT (DemonGodMitchAubin). Considering that in order to have battled Lancelot Mashu must have been taking and dealing back hits of that calibur, with shield bashes or otherwise, it makes it better than even Naofumi's best.
Wiz: The Shield Hero wasn't totally outmatched however. In fact, he had a fair number of advantages. His many shields have him the edge in versaility, he was more tactically minded and by blocking the High Priest's Photon attacks, could react at the speed of light.
Popup: It's possible that Mashu could have light-speed capabilities, given how she blocked Attila's Photon Beam; name aside, it is expressly said to be made of light.
Boomstick: A lot of his shields did seem like game breakers in their own right. I mean, the Soul Eater Shield alone enabled him to phase through solid objects and drain a person of their spiritual energy. And the Bee Drill Shield could cause paralysis. But unfortunately for Naofumi, Servants like Mashu come with a whole range of resistances. Their bodies offer protection for their souls, and they can resist Bounded Fields which inflict paralysis.
Wiz: The use of her shield also allowed Mashu and her Master resistance to another Servant's poisonous skin, so that made the Chimera Snake Shield pretty much useless.
Boomstick: It's possible that Naofumi might have had some shield that offered an ability Mashu wasn't immune to, but being so to so many meant Naofumi was more likely to waste time flicking between the useless ones and thus end up getting hit with a fatal blow.
Wiz: Hengen Muso Style certainly seemed like a game breaker, especially in regards to using a person's own defence against them to attack their insides. However, it specifically does so by applying the difference in Naofumi's attack power to his opponent's physical defences. Compared to a difference of 26 gigatons and 1 gigaton paints a clear picture. And whilst attacking innards does seem like a sure-fire way to win, and would at least leave some serious damage, the clear difference outlined by the technique implies it's not meant to be an instant win. And anyway, it's not like a super tough person's insides are going to be that much weaker than their outsides, honestly speaking.
Popup: Another Spirit, Karna, survived being impaled from the inside out by Vlad's conceptually-summoned stakes, so it is possible for Mashu to survive internal damage to a degree.
Popup: Mashu possesses a different level of durability to that of her Shield, which can take hits over 26 gigatons.
Boomstick: And Mashu's means of counterattacking, the Black Barrel, would really be a game-breaker. They could break down magical constructs just like the Shield Naofumi used, giving him nothing to hide behind or even use. And whilst Naofumi could copy the appearance of Mashu's shield, he wouldn't immediately know of their abilities or how to invoke them. Plus, they need a level of mana to use; with Naofumi's own usuable life energy not being shown as being the same as Mashu's based on their strength and durability, copying Mashu's shield wouldn't be much use.
Popup: The Shield of 0 was is only able to redirect attacks from godly foes, not mortal ones like Mashu. And the Black Barrel is able to destroy godly foes similar to the kind Naofumi was able to match at the end of the web novel, and godly-Naofumi possesses zero attack power anyhow.
Wiz: Naofumi held several solid advantages but Mashu's strength, durability, arsenal and counters gave the Shielder the means to take down the Shield Hero.
Boomstick: I'm still going to Nao-fume-ey over it because a defensive based battle having a kill is totally out of Grand Order.
Wiz: The winner is Mashu Kyrielight.

Trivia[]
- The connection between Mashu and Naofumi is that they are both supernatural shield wielders who are deployed to different worlds in order to save them from destruction; Mashu is employed to prevent Singularities from altering human history and Naofumi was brought to Melromarc to save it from the Waves. Both also fall into the roles of legendary heroes; Mashu is fused with a Heroic Spirit and Naofumi was summoned as the Shield Hero, and both fight alongside other more conventional warriors; Mashu with other Servants and Ritsuka Fujimaru, and Naofumu's Party, respectively. Both have also been "abandoned" by other heroes of similar roles; Galahad left Mashu's body after her efforts caused the future to become blank and the other Cardinal heroes expressed disgust towards Naofumi due to false allocations towards him.
- This battle would have been in 2D
- The original music for this battle would have been called 'Shielder Rising', referring to Mashu's Servant class and the name of Naofumi's series
