Description[]

Super Mario VS Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Iconic pop culture teams of heroic brothers that trek through sewers and have equal Japanese and Italian influence! Will the Mario Bros. walk home with a few more turtles stomped? Or will the TMNT send these plumbers back to the sewers?

Interlude[]

(Cue Death Battle theme)

Wiz: Brothers...love them or hate them, when you decide to team up, you're a force to be reckoned with, whether against evil, or the local italian food joint.

Boomstick: But what happens when two unstoppable iconic pairs of 'em duke it out? The Super Mario Bros., Nintendo's legendary platforming mascots and the superstars of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Wiz: And the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, New York City's heroic squad of radical terrapin teens.

Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick!

Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win...a DEATH BATTLE.

Mario & Luigi[]

(Cue Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Supermassive Galaxy)

Wiz: 25 years ago, two babies were dropped off on Yoshi's Island to their parents by a stork...

Boomstick: Actually, first the green one was dropped off at an evil turtle dragon king's castle, and the red one had to ride a dinosaur there to rescue him...

Wiz: But THEN, they were delivered to their parents...

Boomstick: But it was the wrong parents, and the same thing happened AGAIN on a DIFFERENT ISLAND. AND THEN THE BABIES WERE CAPTURED AGAIN AND BROUGHT BACK TO THE FIRST ISLAND-

Wiz: Yes, from the very first minute, you could say the brothers were always destined for adventure.

Boomstick: And plumbing, eventually.

Wiz: Mario and Luigi quickly became friends with one of the fellow babies from the Yoshi's Island escapade, Princess Peach of the Mushroom Kingdom, who happens to have a rocky relationship with the "evil turtle dragon king" named Bowser we mentioned earlier. So from then on, Mario and Luigi began their careers as superstars saving Peach from Bowser and his Koopa army.

Boomstick: Whether that means saving her in different kingdoms, saving her across the universe, saving her from the past after time travelling, even saving her ON VACATION. TWICE. These guys better get paid a lot! I guess not though, since they still find time to be plumbers. which makes sense with all the pipes and overalls I guess.

Wiz: Sometimes it's not even about saving Peach, sometimes it's about saving the mayor of a city from a giant gorilla, or saving EACH other.

Boomstick: Mario's usually fine with this. As the kinda-maybe-sorta-older happy-go-lucky brother who attracts all the crowds and leaps in to danger without a second thought to save the day, it's in his nature to always try and set things right.

Wiz: Luigi, on the other hand...well, he's a little bit of a cowardly klutz, to put it nicely. He's scared of monsters and ghosts, and isn't a stranger to falling flat on his face. Much more mild-mannered (besides fear) compared to Mario, Luigi would rather stay home and read a good book sometimes as long as someone else is saving the day.

Boomstick: But the bond these guys share is insane! When one's in trouble, the other will save them from Bowser, ghost kings, uh, barrels in a college, and, uh..."Bean Fever?" Those last two aren't impressive as much as they are weird.

Wiz: Wait until you hear how they accomplish all of this in the first place: jumping.

Mb analysis

Boomstick: Yup, there's a reason Mario was called Jumpman. The Mario Bros. main technique is their super-incredible jumping, these guys would crush at the olympics!...wait...

Wiz: They can easily jump five feet in the air bare minimum, and can reach over 20 feet in the air. By utilizing their weight and strength, they can use jumping as an attack to stomp on enemies from above.

Boomstick: They're pretty acrobatic with their jumps too, as they can be somersaults, spinning pirouettes that let them stomp harder and not be hurt from spikes, backflips, long jumps, and super high triple jumps! And when they do a front-flip in mid-air, they can slam down with a super powerful butt stomp called the Ground Pound!

Wiz: Luigi can jump a little higher and can delay his descent in mid-air by kicking his feet around with the Scuttle Jump techniue, but Mario is all around a slightly more skilled jumper.

Boomstick: Let's not act like all they're good for is hopping around though. They've got more than just basic hand-to-hand skills with some quick punches, kicks, and slide attacks, and they can pair them with their jumps to attack in mid-air.

Wiz: Now, we start to get crazy, although I wouldn't blame you if you thought 5'1 Italians jumping four times their height in the air crazy.

Boomstick: Mario and Luigi's craziest natural powers are their hand powers, Firebrand and Thunderhand, gifted to them by the Fire and Thunder gods. in the Beanbean Kingdom.

Wiz: Mario has the power of pyrokinesis, letting him shoot out bouncing fireballs that can combine together to become larger and small short-range blasts of fire.

Boomstick: Luigi can do the same with electricity, but instead of fireballs he can shoot lightning bolts and huge lightning balls!

Wiz: But Mario and Luigi's true strength lies in their arsenal, their plumbers' toolbox if you will. But this toolbox isn't filled with plungers, it's filled with-...well, this set-up would work better if we weren't starting with their hammers.

Boomstick: Mario and Luigi have huge mallets that they can use to smash enemies with and deflect incoming projectiles! I guess having a huge Looney Tunes mallet is good for when you're fighting a spikey guy and your main power is stomping on things!

Wiz: Well, with that out of the way, Mario and Luigi's most iconic part of their arsenal is their Power-Ups; small, magic Mushroom Kingdom staples that they usually keep on hand or find while adventuring. When used, they give the bros. a new form with new powers. There are so many, it'd be better to just list them all.

1200px-Two Raccoons Artwork - New Super Mario Bros 2
  • Power-Ups
    • Super Mushroom: Heal Mario and Luigi's damage and returns them to normal size if shrunken.
    • 1-Up Mushroom: Lets the Bros. revive each other, should one of them be downed.
    • Fire Flower: Grants fire powers. Gives Luigi pyrokinesis and gives Mario a few more options for his fire powers that he already has, like spin jumping to shoot out multiple fireballs.
    • Ice Flower: Lets Mario or Luigi skate on water and shoot ice balls that can freeze opponents.
    • Boomerang Flower: Mario or Luigi gain a Boomerang Bro suit and can throw boomerangs to hit enemies and grab objects.
    • Hammer Suit: Gives Mario or Luigi a durable shell and lets them throw hammers in an arch.
    • Super Leaf: Gives Mario or Luigi a raccoon/kitsune tail, ears, and sometimes even a full-body suit. They can slap enemies with their tail, float by kicking their feet in the air or shaking their tail, fly for a bit after a running start, and when they have a full Tanooki Suit they can turn in to a stone statue to hide in plain sight and crush enemies.
    • Super Bell: Lets Mario or Luigi climb up walls and scratch enemies using a Cat Suit.
    • Blue Shell: Mario or Luigi gain a blue shell and can retreat in to it for extra defense or to spin in to enemies at high speed.
    • Cape Feather: Gives Mario or Luigi a cape that lets them glide, fly after a running start, slam in to the ground to cause earthquakes, and spin around to attack enemies with it.
    • Super Star: Mario or Luigi glows rainbow colors, gaining a boost of speed and becoming basically invulnerable for around 10 seconds.
    • Mega Mushroom: Mario or Luigi grow at least 5x and up to 20x their size and are surrounded by sparkles, becoming much stronger and basically invulnerable for around 15 seconds.

Boomstick: They're pretty useful, but after a big hit they'll go away, and the ones that don't have a time limit that are only around 10 to 15 seconds long, save for 1-Ups. Sounds a little bit like when I drink that gas station beer...no wait, no it doesn't.

Wiz: Their equipment doesn't end there, since my personal favorite Mario character, Professor E. Gadd, was kind enough to supply them with some interesting gadgets.

Boomstick: Of course you'd like a weird old man as long as he wears a lab coat and makes machines.

Wiz: Did you expect any different? I thought not.

Boomstick: For Mario, E. Gadd supplied him with F.L.U.D.D., the Flash Liquidizing Ultra Dousing Device. F.L.U.D.D. has two default modes, a spray mode that lets Mario shoot out a very powerful stream of water that's much stronger than anything your backyard hose can shoot out, and a JETPACK MODE! A freakin' water jetpack! I mean, it only lasts a few seconds and it's better for horizontal air travel, but still!

Wiz: Sadly for F.L.U.D.D., it has a decently-sized but nonetheless limited supply of water and it will need to refill after being used for a while.

Boomstick: And for Luigi, E. Gadd has given him the ghostly vacuum, the Poltergust...a couple times, actually. It's gone through a couple models, the latest being the Poltergust G-00. It can suck, blow, and ohhhh no, yup, Wiz, I'm gonna have to ask you handle this one. I'm not mature enough for this.

Wiz; Ooooof course. The Poltergust can suck up ghosts and any objects that can possibly fit inside its nozzle with very impressive force, and blow out air with comparable strength to the point where shooting it at the ground can release an area-clearing blast that launches Luigi upwards by a bit. It also has the Strobulb, which functions as a flashlight and can charge up a very bright flash to blind and stun opponents. With the Dark-Light device, it can even make invisible objects become visible.

Boomstick: Ok, ok, I'm good. The Poltergust has one last function, its Suction Shot can shoot plungers! Finally, circling back to them being plumbers again! Luigi can latch on to these plungers with the Poltergust and tug on them to slam something around like the Hulk in Avengers, just a little less green.

Wiz: Well, we've gotten through the essentials for the brothers on their own, but as a team, they open up a whole new world of possibilities.

Boomstick: I've got two words for ya: Bros. Attacks. Well, and Bros. Actions too I guess.

Wiz: When Mario and Luigi get together, they can unleash a variety of new attacks and techniques. Again, there's a lot, so we'll just list them off and only go over some of the most notable and useful.

Mario Bros. Attack Artwork4 - Mario & Luigi Dream Team
  • Bros Attacks
    • Splash Bros.: Mario jumps on Luigi, Luigi jumps up high, and then they spin in mid-air and crash down on their enemy with their combined weight.
    • Chopper Bros.: Mario dunks Luigi and then Luigi launches out of the ground to shoot Mario up, where he can then spin in mid-air with his hammer out to rapidly hit the enemy.
    • Swing Bros.: Mario grabs Luigi and spins him around to launch him at an enemy.
    • Knockback Bros.: Luigi squishes Mario and whacks him with his hammer to launch him like a golf ball, turning Mario in to a spinning projectile to attack opponents.
    • Cyclone Bros.: Luigi squishes Mario with his hammer and hops on him to spin around with his hammer out like a cyclone.
    • Green Shell: Mario and Luigi kick a Green Koopa Shell back and forth at an enemy.
    • Jump Helmet: Mario jumps on a trampoline on Luigi's head launch high in to the air for a powerful jump attack.
    • Yoo Who Cannon: Mario and Luigi jump in to a Barrel Cannon that clones itself and shoots various doubles of Mario and Luigi as spinning balls at their opponents.
    • Snack Basket: Luigi eats a bunch of falling sweets from a magic picnic basket and becomes extremely large and fat, allowing Mario to pick him up and throw him in to the air where he then crashes down and makes a shockwave.
    • Magic Window: Mario and Luigi jump in to a Magic Window that creates clones of them that teleport around to stomp on enemies through various appearing windows.
    • Bomb Derby: Mario & Luigi pull out a bunch of bombs, which then Luigi tosses to his brother to hit with his hammer at enemies.
    • Jet-Board Bash: Mario and Luigi hop on a skateboard with rocket propulsion that gradually gains speed until they get in close, at which point Mario will attack with a powerful spinning hammer strike.
    • Drill Shell: Luigi dons a spiky shell cap and jumps on Mario's shoulders, where they then jump up and spin downwards towards an enemy to drill in to them.
    • Synchronous Ground Pound: When Mario and Luigi Ground Pound at the same time, they create a huge omnidirectional shockwave that disorients and hurts enemies.
  • Bros. Actions
    • High Jump: Mario jumps on Luigi's shoulders and they rocket upwards for a super high jump.
    • Spin Jump: Mario jumps on Luigi's shoulders and they spin around to travel across farther horizontal gaps together.
    • Bros. Ball: Mario and Luigi get on each other's backs and link up to form a ball to then spin around at high speeds like a tire.
    • Drill Bros.: Luigi jumps on Mario's shoulders with his hammer out and they then spin so fast that they drill underground, where they can tunnel around and jump out wherever they choose.
    • Side Drill: Luigi jumps on Mario's shoulders and then spin forwards really fast like a drill.

Boomstick: Woah! Is that what having a brother's like? Man, this is one of the only times I wish I wasn't an only-child...

Wiz: These moves just go to show that not only are they a great team, they are extremely loyal and trustful of each other. Why else would they let each other squish one another with hammers or have such inhuman coordination?

Boomstick: I'll have to remember that the next time I play New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii...player 2 throwing me like a basketball in to a pit is just brotherly love.

Wiz: Sure, let's go with that. Anyways, their movesets are backed up by incredible displays of speed and strength. They can smash apart brick blocks and stone pillars, launch Bowser around like a shotput, and take down powerful antagonists of all kinds including Wario, Donkey Kong, King Boo, Fawful, Antasma, Cackletta, and more.

Boomstick: They can survive being thrown hundreds of kilometers by a giant robot airship hand, a mid-air explosion from a different airship that sent them shooting down like comets, and of course they can take hits from all the baddies we just listed.

Wiz: In terms of speed, they can dodge missiles, laser gunfire, and even lightning bolts.

Boomstick: Seriously, what can take these guys down?!?

Wiz: Well, they aren't perfect of course. Mario can be a little too brash compared to his brother, who on the other hand can be much too hesitant. While Luigi usually comes around in the end out of obligation or from a little encouragement, he can still be too cowardly for his own good, and his extra lankiness can make him a little too clumsy.

Boomstick: And while their Power-Ups are super useful, a decent hit or a little stalling can help their opponents deal with 'em.

Wiz: But these weaknesses are just a small leak in the pipes for these extraordinary plumbers.

Boomstick: All of this to say, you can't help but be hooked on the brothers!
