Description[]

Mario vs. Cuphead. They may be number two to older brothers, but they can more than hold a candle to them.

Introduction[]

Wiz: The siblings that we have can either fall in one of these two roles.

Boomstick: Either they end up outshining us or they fall way in our shadows. And these two often experience the latter.

Wiz: Luigi, the brother to Mario.

Boomstick: And Mugman, brother of Cuphead. He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.

Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle.

Luigi[]

Wiz: Every inhabitant of the Mushroom Kingdom...

Boomstick: From the Toads, to the Stools.

Wiz: No just Toads. Ahem, every inhabitant of the Mushroom Kingdom knows of its many-times over savior, Mario.

Boomstick: And, as best they can, they also know of his brother, Luigi.

  • Background
    • Age: 26
    • Height: 5'5
    • Occupation: Plumber
    • Mario's young brother
    • Trained by a Thunder God
    • Terrified of Ghosts (except the Polterpup)

Wiz: Who? Just kidding.

Boomstick: Huh, you joking is rather unnatural.

Wiz: So are a pair of plumbers rescuing a kingdom of fungus people from a giant fire breathing turtle. But Luigi often has the burden of getting pretty much phased out by his brother's more epic adventures.

Boomstick: Sleeping or being straight up absent from most of them can't exactly help.

Wiz: Not to mention that there is a clear difference in his and Mario's personalities. That being that Mario is generally fearless whilst Luigi...isn't.

Boomstick: What's he scared of? The giant fire breathing turtle?

Wiz: Nope. Enemy ghosts.

Boomstick: So he is haunted by the ghosts of the Goombas and Koopas he has slain.

Wiz: No, as in ghosts that are enemies. Likes Boos and the like.

Boomstick: Oh yeah that makes much more sense. Still, in spite of his actually kind of rational fear, Luigi hasn't let it stop him from assisting Mario in his adventures and even having several himself.

Wiz: Like his brother Mario, Luigi possesses the same superhuman speed, strength, durability and agility, and he has the same kind of signature jumping prowess.

  • Techniques
    • Jump
      • Superior in height to Mario's
      • Spin Jump
      • Scuttle Jump
      • Super Jump
    • Thunderhand

Boomstick: He can jump even higher than his brother Mario, although that's might be a trick due to his greater height.

Wiz: Even more along those lines is the fact that Luigi has several signature jumps of his own.

Boomstick: Like the Scuttle Jump. With it, it's almost like Luigi walks down through the air to get where he wants, although it only lasts for a small duration. But what doesn't last for a small duration is the Spin Jump, where Luigi is able to spin himself around as he shoots downwards.

Wiz: And with the Super Jump, Luigi hurls himself upwards higher than usual. But Luigi has more than jumping at hand.

Popup: Luigi has several techniques exclusive to Super Smash Bros, such as the Negative Zone.

Boomstick: Because he has jumping at foot.

Wiz: But at hand, he has the Thunderhand. When his brother Mario was given the Firebrand, which lets him control fire, Luigi was given the means to control the element of lightning itself by a literal god of thunder. With it, Luigi can electrocute his opponent at a close-range, though if he doesn't pull it off correctly, he'll take damage himself.

Boomstick: Still, handy trick to have. And it's not the only one Luigi can pull out because he has a bunch of power-ups and equipment he can utilize.

  • Equipment
    • Super Mushroom
    • Fire Flower
    • Super Bell
    • Super Star
    • Vanish Power Flower
    • Ultra Hammer
    • Poltergust G-00

Wiz: Luigi shares a lot of power-ups with Mario. He can increase his height and power with the Super Mushroom, shoot out fire when he gets a Fire Flower, ice with the Ice Flower and even activate a cat-suit that enables him to climb walls and attack with paw swipes with the Super Bell. He can also use the Ultra Hammer in combat.

Boomstick: It's perfect for letting him splatter his foes into past. The Super Star makes Luigi totally invincible to attackers and the Vanish Power Flower makes him totally invisible to them. Just like the ghosts he 's so afraid of.

Wiz: Speaking of which, Luigi's greatest weapon was tailor made to do battle with his spectral archenemies.

Boomstick: The Poltergust, made by Professor E. Gadd, to capture and contain ghosts.

Wiz: There have been several models of the Poltergust, even one large enough to ride like a car, with the latest one being the G-00. Like past models, the Poltergust can unleash a blinding light to stun foes, suck in air or blow it out and be used to scan for spectral residue with its special attachments. The upgrades it comes with over last models is the ability to unleash a gust of air around him and fire out plungers.

Boomstick: And it even let's Luigi have a sidekick of his own in the form of Gooigi. Not only does he taste like coffee apparently but with his own gooey Poltergust replica, he can help out Luigi with greating even more powerful gusts. Oh, and he can slip through bars, though most liquids will dissolve him. Good thing he tastes of coffee already because you couldn't make him coffee flavored by pouring it over him.

  • Feats
    • Survived a 2.4 megaton explosion
    • Helped Mario many times over
    • Scales to Mario
    • Captured 50+ Boos
    • Defeated Dimentio, Chief Chilly, King Boo
    • Won Mario Party by doing absolutely nothing

Wiz: And Gooigi is nowhere near as tough as the real Luigi. Remember that explosion in the sports arena caused by Wario?

Boomstick: Sure do. Most exciting thing to happen in a sport in ages.

Wiz: Well, not only did Mario withstand that explosion, but so did Luigi, and it was worth over 2 megatons of TNT. In fact, Luigi has routinely accompanied Mario in many of his adventures against many of the same foes.

Boomstick: Luigi can even fight Bowser by himself. Need proof beyond new character replays? Well, when King Boo, Luigi's Bowser, made a copy of Bowser, who is Mario's King Boo, Luigi was able to get the best of it. And in Super Mario 3D World, Luigi is one of four characters who can canonically be used to defeat Bowser.

Wiz: Luigi is just as powerful as Mario is as well, according to Super Mario 64 DS, and Mario can pull a giant golden Chain Chomp and kick a castle with power worth 3 megatons of TNT. But what Luigi matches with Mario he falls short in others.

Boomstick: Luigi is rather bad at keeping his footing and quiet obviously, his cowardice makes it easy to knock him off his game.

Wiz: But whilst Luigi is in Mario's shadow most of the time, when he steps out, he proves himself just as much as his brother does that he is one heroic plumber.

Mugman[]

Wiz: The adventurous boy Cuphead had a habit for getting into trouble, as per the the formula of the lives of the old fashioned cartoon characters he was modelled after.

Boomstick: Somehow, or perhaps naturally, he found himself in Hell itself, in the lair of the Devil.

Wiz: Which happened to be a gambling casino. Oddly appropriate. But Cuphead didn't end up there alone. He just so happened to drag his brother Mugman along with him.

  • Background
    • Age: Young
    • Height: 3'2
    • Cuphead's brother
    • In debt to the Devil
    • Understands betting odds

Boomstick: And if that wasn't bad enough, Cuphead ended up betting his soul in a game of Craps. I've heard of trying to send your siblings away in the post but that's going too far.

Wiz: Oh don't worry, Cuphead betted his own as well. In spite of Mugman's warnings but it was too late. Cuphead had thrown a song by Feint.

Boomstick: Eh?

Wiz: Snake eyes.

Boomstick: Oh. I like that song. Reeling from losing their souls fair and square, Cuphead and Mugman did the only thing that they could think of.

Wiz: Grovel for mercy and swear they'd do anything. Guess they didn't learn their lesson about promising stuff to the Devil himself.

Boomstick: Fortunately for them, the Devil had a problem they could help him out with. Turns out that lots of people owned their souls to the Devil, only to scamper on the debt.

Wiz: So the Devil gave the brothers a deal; if they collected all the Soul Contracts for him, he'd let them off the hook. With no other option, the brothers got to work. Whilst it's more often than not Cuphead we see doing most of the work, there's also the option for Mugman to take the center stage and do battle with the wide selection of character owing to the Devil.

Boomstick: Like Cuphead, Mugman can dash forwards or leap off of bright pink projectiles and items.

Wiz: And like Cuphead, he can use a wide number of different shots in a fight.

  • Abilities
    • Dash
    • Parry
    • Peashooter
      • EX Ability: Mega Blast
    • Spread
      • EX Ability: Eight Way
    • Chaser
      • EX Ability: Chaos Orbit
    • Lobber
      • EX Ability: Kablooey
    • Roundabout
      • EX Ability: Jumbo Rebound
    • Charge
      • EX Ability: Radical Barrage
    • Supers
      • Energy Beam
      • Giant Ghost
      • Invincibility

Boomstick: His primary one is the Peashooter, a long-range low-damage string of shots. And when Mugman charges up enough power, he can fire an extra large blast.

Wiz: To literally spread out his shots, he uses Spread, which is short ranged but capable of hitting multiple angles, especially with the EX ability that sends out shots in all directions.

Boomstick: Chaser Shots chase down Mugman's targets to deal very light damage and the EX summons a swarm of them around himself. Lobber sends out small and big bouncing bombs and Roundabout is all about sending out projectiles that boomerang around in the opposite direction where they were originally fired from.

Wiz: The shot that arguably has the highest payoff when most costly requirement is the Charge. The longer he stockpiles the power that goes into it, the more powerful the projectile that gets fired. And the EX continues it's trend of high damage by unleashing a small scale yet powerful explosion right into the face of whoever Mugman is facing.

Boomstick: And to think he fires all these off by snapping his fingers. At the speed he does, he could probably snap along to the beats of one of Eminem's tracks.

Wiz: The shots may be Mugman's primary means of attack but he also has the Super techniques to fall back on.

Boomstick: Like the Kamehameha water spurt, the big-buff ghost and of course, good old invincibility.

Wiz: Thanks to these powers shared by the two brothers, Mugman and Cuphead proved to be nearly unstoppable.

  • Feats
    • Destroyed stone blocks
    • Pilots around laser gun shots
    • Collected all the Soul Tracks with Cuphead
    • Can react to Djimmi the Great's mental actions
    • Broke free of being petrified
    • Defeated Goopy le Grand, King Dice, the Devil

Boomstick: They've fought an entire slew of foes straight out of old fashioned cartoons. Living vegetables, a ghost train and its passengers, overly ambitious actions, a not-so-sweet sweet monarch and an Eggman expy.

Wiz: He's even fought against a giant bird and his son, the latter of whom wields a proton blaster. As we've mentioned quite a while ago, Proton Gun's are theoretical weapons that can shoot out light speed projectiles.

Boomstick: The shots fired by Wally's son's gun even home in on Mugman and his bro whilst they're flying in their fancy planes.

Wiz: That's not all. Mugman is capable of reacting to the mental projections of Djimmi the Great, which surely serve as a indicator of his own thinking speed and process. As Djimmi is able to give a similar challenge to Mugman like that Wally's son does, then Mugman may be slightly even faster than light-speed.

Popup: Specifically, Mugman can undergo the action to crouch down in his plane during the brief moment Djimmi 'scanned' him with the mental projection in the brief time it is conjured up.

Boomstick: Mugman can also smash straight through the stone sectors of Djimmi's stone pillars, which would need a serious amount of strength in order to pull off. His legal guardian Elder Kettle even stated that the brother's strength was getting even higher. Too bad that it doesn't mean they're both indestructible.

Wiz: Mugman can only take a certain number of attacks no matter the point of his strength.

Boomstick: When he runs out of hit-boxes, he's reduced to a ghost that can be struck by a Parry to spawn him back in. But for that to happen, he needs his bro fighting along side him. But the lowest of hit-boxes still wasn't enough to stop those two.

Wiz: Not only did they claim all the Soul Contracts, they hold the Devil exactly where to stick it and straight up defied him, besting him after a long arduous battle. Even with Cuphead lending his name to their adventure, Mugman can more than do his part.

Interlude[]

Wiz: Alright the combatants are set and we've run the data through all possibilites.

Boomstick: It's time for a Death Battle!

The Battle[]

Setting: Casino

Mugman sat at a table where Luigi was dressed in a dealer's suit, setting up the game that Mugman had to win; guess which one of three cards was the ace. After shuffling them around, Luigi spread his hands to give Mugman a chance to check. After a moment's thought, Mugman pointed at one of the cards. Luigi flipped it over and to Mugman's horror, he has selected wrong. Luigi grinned and held out his palm for the money Mugman owed him. Mugman, however, remembered what the last person to have beaten him in a game had wanted and he reacted accordingly; he flipped the table and aimed his finger at Luigi. The plumber only had time to stare blankly in surprise before Mugman opened fire.

FIGHT!

Luigi moved as a blur, tossing off his host suit and letting it get shredded by Mugman's shots whilst he jumped to the side to avoid getting hit by them. Mugman turned, continuing to fire and forcing Luigi to dodge, then duck and then jump over them. The jump led into a Scuttle Jump, which Luigi used to tread downwards through the air until he was able to stamp his feet down onto Mugman's head, launching himself off his foe and leaving his dizzied. Luigi landed, pulling out a Fire Flower. Whipping around the same time Mugman did after recovering, the two unleashed their respective projectiles at each other; Luigi's fireballs and Mugman's watery shots, all of which collided and turned into explosions of steam. Luigi's barrages eventually proved to be greater in intensity than Mugman's and soon several shots were heading straight towards him. Mugman acted quickly, jumping into the air and parrying off the fireballs, building up his EX counter so that when he landed, he was able to shoot out a particularly massive projectile. It dispelled the fireballs Luigi fired at it until it hit the plumber directly, sending him flying backwards and canceling out his Fire Flower power-up.

Luigi slid backwards across the ground, rolling back onto his feet in time for Mugman to start firing out Lobbers at him. Luigi brought out his Ultra Hammer, swinging it out to deflect the projectiles and even sending one back towards Mugman, directly striking its initial shooter. Mugman flew backwards as Luigi dashed over to him, knocking him higher into the air with an upwards hammer swing before besetting him with a spinning attack with the weapon that eventually sent him flying backwards to hit the wall. Mugman slunk downwards as Luigi charged forwards and hurled his hammer at his opponent, who dashed to the side to avoid the weapon as it cratered the wall, firing the Peashooter as he went. The shots peppered Luigi, sending him reeling back as he covered his face with his crossed arms. He quickly pulled out a Vanish Power Flower, using it to turn himself invisible and escape from Mugman's fire. Mugman stole forwards, keeping his hand raised and ready to continue firing if his opponent popped back up. He suddenly got struck from behind by his invisible foe, whipping around to fire in the direction he got hit from. But his shots hit nothing before he was yet against attacked from behind, which threw him forward to hit the ground face-first.

Mugman gritted his teeth in anger as he got back up, equipping his Homing shots and unleashing a whole bunch. They all homed in one the invisible Luigi, hitting him all over his body and making him howl and yelp. Mugman's eyes lit up at his success and he conjured up the EX of the homing projectiles, sending out a dozen more shots that bombard Luigi. By the time his invisibility wore off, Luigi was very wobbly on his feet and looking very bruised and battered. With a smirk, Mugman charged forward, firing out his Spread shot with the intent to engulf Luigi with the barrage of shots. However, Luigi pulled out a Power Mushroom and increased his state to undo the damage. Now back in fighting strength, Luigi jumped into the air faster than Mugman could track before Spin Jumping downwards, hitting Mugman in the top of his head numerous times. Even as Mugman stumbled about due to the attack, Luigi kept on hitting him. Eventually, Mugman was able to escape his predicament by utilizing his Charge EX, unleashing a small explosion that sent Luigi flying backwards. After he had landed, Mugman began charging up the Charge Shot, doing so for a long while to unleash an extra powerful shot.

Luigi looked over his shoulder to see the projectile coming at him, and with a grunt, he performed the Super Jump, launching himself high into the air to avoid the blast as it blew a crater where he had been a second ago. Mugman strained to watch Luigi climb higher into the air before there was a puff of smoke around him and he was then Cat Luigi. With a yodeling meow, Luigi pounced down through the air towards Mugman, colliding directly with him paws-first. Mugman was knocked onto his back before Luigi started raining blows down onto his face with his powerful paws. Even as he was battered and his vision filled with spots, Mugman was able to align his thoughts together to snap his fingers. A flash of light came from behind Luigi and he looked over his shoulder to see a Giant Ghost hovering behind him, cracking its knuckles. Luigi's pupils dilated before he let out a shriek right before the ghost came down on him.

A short beating later, Luigi was hurled out the casino's window and into the parking lot, hitting the side of his cart. Luigi looked up to see the Giant Ghost coming at him against, looking ready to deal him some more hurt. Luigi initially panic but upon realizing he was right next to his car, he calmed down enough to pull something out of there; the Poltergust G-00. As the Giant Ghost went to throw a punch, Luigi stunned him with a bright flash, leaving it vulnerable for Luigi to suck him into the Poltergust, much to the surprise of Mugman, who had just emerged into the parking lot himself. Luigi quickly summoned Gooigi from the back of the Poltergust, before launching himself up into the air with a burst from the machine to land on the other side of Mugman. Luigi then started sucking inwards with the Poltergust whilst Gooigi blew air outwards with his. Realizing that Luigi was attempting to suck him into his Poltergust, with his gooey copy being used to help in this. In order to escape this predicament, Mugman started firing out his Roundabout Shots in both directions, sending the arcing attacks at both of his opponents. Luigi was able to dodge the projectiles but the ones aimed at Gooigi easily sliced through him, reducing him back into a liquid inside of the Poltergust.

As Luigi regained his balance from avoiding the Roundabout just as Mugman planted his feet on the ground with a determined look on his face. After a little wind-up, Mugman unleashed the Energy Beam, sending it straight towards Luigi. Luigi aimed his device's nozzle ahead of himself and summoned out Gooigi to do the same. The two of them blew air out of their Poltergusts, halting the oncoming beam as Mugman continued to fire it. With the attack kept at bay, Luigi marched forwards and extended a finger that crackled with lighting as a sign of the Thunderhand.

Luigi: Let's ago.

With a single touch, Luigi send the electrical current coursing through the liquid body of the beam, all the way up to Mugman, electrocuting him violently and canceling out the beam as he spasmed. Luigi called Gooigi back into the Poltergust and fired out a plunger to stick onto Mugman's face. As he gave muffled cries of surprise and tried to pull it off, Luigi snagged the end of its rope with the Poltergust's vacuum. With a corresponding grunt, Luigi hauled Mugman about to slam him into the ground three times over, the third and final time proving to be waht was needed to completely smash him apart, leaving him in pieces on the ground. Mugman's ghost rose up from his remains and was quickly stunned and then sucked up by Luigi with the Poltergust. The ghost of Mugman could only put up a small fight before he was completed sucked inside. Luigi peered down the nozzle to confirm his victor before punching the air with the same nozzle with a yell of triumph.

KO!

Inside the Poltergust, the terrified Mugman is surrounded by similarly trapped Boos whilst Luigi sucks up the coins he was owed with the Poltergust.

Outcome[]

Boomstick: And that is why Luigi gets a year all to himself.

Wiz: First off, let's compare the ways Luigi and Mugman matched or even countered each other.

Boomstick: Since the majority of Mugman's arsenal was liquid based, it's a given he'd be able to make quick work of Gooigi whenever he was busted out. Meanwhile, that Giant Ghost of Mugman's could be dealt with the Poltergust, the literal bane of all ghosts.

Wiz: And in a less obscure scope, both Luigi and Mugman had invincibility states they could use to counter each others, and even with Mugman's superiority in ranged attack thanks to his many shots, Luigi had the likes of the Fire and Ice Flowers to fall back on.

Popup: Mugman can only specifically bounce on pink versions of his foes' projectiles, a color that Luigi's attacks don't come in.

Boomstick: In areas where they actually outranked each other, Mugman took speed easily.

Wiz: Luigi is comparable to his brother Mario, who piloted the Star Diver and maneuvered as electricity at similar speeds of Mach 200+. Whilst Mugman has easily been able to avoid the theoretically light-speed shots of a proton blaster.

Boomstick: But if his bro Mario's encounters with a certain Nintendo angel has proven, speed alone is not enough to take the win over these plumbers because of just how outclassed they are in strength and durability.

Wiz: And outclassed Mugman was. Breaking through Djimmi's pillars would require 37 kilograms of TNT. Even when taking into consideration Mugman's most powerful means of attack, the massive attack beam, is 21 times stronger and should logically make his strength output at 800 kilograms, it utterly pales in comparison to Luigi's capabilities.

Popup: The Giant Ghost is able to deal a total of 112 damage to opponents but this is only if it can land all of its hits on them, with each individual damage being at 4 points. Even then, Luigi's stats still outrank this.

Boomstick: Not only did he survive that 2 megaton blast but Luigi should be comparable to Mario, who kicked a castle with 3 megatons.

Wiz: Even if Luigi was only a quarter as strong as Mario, this would still put him well above Mugman.

Boomstick: Basically, even with his superior speed, Mugman had no way to leave a fatal blow or take one himself, unless he used his invincibility for that latter one but we all know it wouldn't last forever.

Wiz: Both these brothers could stand alongside their older siblings no problem but with his arsenal, strength and durability, Luigi had the means to break Mugman.

Boomstick: In other words, he subjected him to a brutal Mugging.

Wiz: The winner is Luigi.

Trivia[]

  • Connections: Both are the younger brothers to the red-colored mascots of popular video games (Mario and Cuphead, respectively) and from a gameplay perspective are number-two players. Both are also more characteristically cautious than their older brothers, and have access to similar abilities as they. Both have also battled against ghosts.
  • Animation Style: 2D.
  • OST Idea: 'Mugs and Mustaches', referring to Mugman himself and Luigi, due to the latter having a mustache.
