Lady Wifi vs. Rena Rouge is a What-If? Death Battle by I'm Lynda. It features Lady Wifi and Rena Rouge, both from the television series, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir.
Description[]
She’s a major character on the television series, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir, where she’s been both villain and hero. Now, it’s time for the two sides of her personality to meet!
Interlude[]
Wiz: Heroes, villains, heroes who became villains, villains who became heroes; they’re a major staple of superhero stories. But, nowhere do people flip sides as easily as they do in the French television series, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir.
Boomstick: So, it’s time we brought together a hero and a villain who are actually the same person.
Wiz: The first is Lady Wifi, the datakinetic villain persona of Alya Césaire.
Boomstick: And the second is Rena Rouge, the illusionist hero person of the same Alya Césaire.
Wiz: I’m Wiz, and he’s Boomstick.
Boomstick: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle.
Alya Césaire[]
Wiz: Alya Césaire was born on the French-speaking Caribbean island of Martinique, to Otis and Marlena Césaire. And when the family moved to Paris, Alya was enrolled at the prestigious Françoise Dupont High School.
Boomstick: Now Alya has never been a wallflower, and as soon as her butt hit the chair at the school, she was right away sticking up for her own rights, and for those of her fellow students, including Marinette Dupain-Cheng. The two quickly became the best of friends.
Wiz: At about the same time, a new superhero hit the streets of Paris, a girl calling herself Ladybug. Alya was fascinated with this new superhero, and immediately set up the Ladyblog, where she collected all of the information she could on her.
Boomstick: But, little did she realize that she was going to be caught up in Ladybug and all of her activities!
Lady Wifi[]
Wiz: One day, Alya Césaire decided that she had discovered the secret identity of Ladybug, and that it was none other than the class bully and snobby rich girl, Chloé Bourgeois. So, she decided to get proof of Chloé’s secret identity by getting a picture of the contents of her locker, which she figured would contain Ladybug’s costume and other paraphernalia.
Boomstick: Unfortunately for Alya, her scheme landed her in hot water with the school’s principal, who suspended her for a week. Alya was so upset that the villain, Hawk Moth, sensed her negative emotions, and sent a magic butterfly that turned her into a supervillain, Lady Wifi.
Wiz: Lady Wifi’s powers are best described as “signal empowerment.” That is to say, that her powers come from radio signals, in this case from the radio signals employed by cell phones.
Boomstick: Lady Wifi is a perfect Millennial villain, taking her cell phone everywhere, and using it in every situation.
Wiz: She can use the phone to launch three kinds of icons. The first is a camera, which allows her to connect to the Internet, and broadcast transmissions. The second is a lock icon, which she can use to lock doors or even secure someone’s arm in place.
Boomstick: But, her real go-to icon is the third, the pause icon. When she hits someone with this icon, they are frozen in place, paused in whatever position they were last in.
Wiz: Like all akumatization victims, however, she is effectively armored, being able to withstand attacks that would most like break the bones of a normal person.
Boomstick: And, under the influence of Hawk Moth’s power, she is now a martial artist, able to fight like a master.
Wiz: Now, she does have a bit of a disadvantage, in that her power is linked to her cell phone. And, since her rather tight costume does not seem to include pockets, she is forced to fight with the phone held tightly in one of her hands. This does put her at a bit of a disadvantage vis-à-vis a two-handed opponent.
Boomstick: But, while it’s a disadvantage, it’s not an all-important one. When she fought with Cat Noir, to defend the local cell phone tower, she was able to take him down, and pin him to the ground.
Wiz: Her most interesting power is her ability to ride the radio signals used by the cell phone network. She can teleport out of anywhere that she has a signal, right through the cell phone that she carries. Then, she can materialize in any location where there is a cell phone or a cell phone tower. She can do this quite rapidly, almost in the blink of an eye.
Boomstick: She’s a formidable opponent, a number that is very difficult to block.
Rena Rouge[]
Wiz: One day, when Ladybug found herself dealing with a mass-replicating pair of akumatized victims that were called Sapotis, Master Fu informed her that she needed to take one of the other Miraculouses, and give it to someone she could trust, someone who would act as an ally.
Boomstick: Ladybug chose the Fox Miraculous, and gave it to her friend Alya Césaire. The kwami associated with the Miraculous was named Trixx, and it transformed Alya into a Fox-themed hero. When Cat Noir asked her her name, Alya thought quickly, and came up with the name Rena Rouge. Rouge means “red” in French, while the word for fox is “renard” or “renarde,” the first one being masculine and the second one being feminine. Yeah, the French do that a lot.
Wiz: Anyway, Alya was quite excited to become a Miraculous hero, as, unlike when she was akumatized, she would be able to fight villains and remember everything that she did. Her help proved invaluable, in dealing with the Sapotis, and since then Ladybug has called on Rena Rouge’s assistance a number of times.
Boomstick: Now, being Miraculoused, or whatever, does more than just give you a fancy set of duds. In fact, Rena Rouge is effectively armored. She can take the sort of blows that would easily disable a normal person, and the most vicious of attacks leave no mark on her, not even on her face, which looks to be exposed to harm.
Wiz: Another benefit of the Miracula is that Alya has been rendered as a martial artist of great ability. She has fought multiple opponents, showing great ability.
Boomstick: Adding into that ability is the fact that she can now move super-fast, and can leap great distances, practically flying from rooftop to rooftop, across the cityscape of Paris...France. Not to be confused with Paris, Illinois.
Wiz: [Mumbles] As if it could be. [Speaking normally] Besides the protection, fighting ability, super-speed and acrobatic abilities, each Miraculous comes with its own special superpower. In the case of the Fox Miraculous, Rena Rouge has the ability to create an potent illusion of great complexity. This illusion lasts until she terminates it, or until someone touches it, at which time the illusion collapses.
Boomstick: Overall, it gives Rena Rouge a rather potent collection of powers, which makes her a formidable opponent.
Intermission[]
Wiz: Alright the combatants are set; let’s end this debate once and for all.
Boomstick: Its time for a DEATH BATTLE!
DEATH BATTLE![]
Pre-Fight []
Alya Césaire ran down the street, holding her cell phone before her.
“This is Alya Césaire, reporting for the Ladyblog,” Alya panted. “There have been reports of a new akumatized villain in the Parc du Champ de Mars, and now is a great time to see Ladybug and Cat Noir in action!”
As she came up to an intersection, she saw a hefty woman run by, being pursued by a thin woman, who was lashing her with a long stick. The strange thing was that the women looked so similar that they could have been sisters, or even twins!
When she rounded the corner, she was confronted by another strange scene. This time there were four men engaged in a fist fight, while a young boy stood by crying loudly. Again, each of the men looked somewhat different, but they all looked strangely similar. In fact, even the crying boy looked rather like the men.
Alya ran past the fight, and continued up the street, all the while keeping up a running commentary on her phone.
She rounded another corner, and came within sight of the Eiffel Tower, when suddenly a rainbow-colored beam sizzled over her head. “Oh my goodness!” she exclaimed as she dove behind a white Peugeot that was parked nearby.
“I’ve got you now, Disassociator!” she heard Ladybug yell. So, Alya stood up, and pointed her phone towards where she thought that the action would be. This was her big chance to record another of Ladybug’s triumphs!
Suddenly, though, a beam struck her full force, entirely bathing her in rainbow-colored light. Alya felt a strange vertigo, almost as if she was a top spinning this way and that across a table.
She toppled to the ground, and sat with her head in her hands; she had always hated feeling dizzy.
“Aha! So, there you are!” she heard a voice declare.
Alya looked up, and was shocked to see Lady Wifi staring down at her angrily. She had seen her wax mannequin at the Musée Grévin, but this Lady Wifi was moving!
“You are a weak signal, and I am going to shut you off permanently!” she declared. Then, she spun into a roundhouse kick, her foot targeted directly at Alya’s head.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, a black-booted foot shot out, and deflected the kick, sending Lady Wifi spinning away.
Alya looked up to see Rena Rouge standing over her. “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?” Rena Rouge asked Lady Wifi smoothly.
Lady Wifi straightened out her stance, and glared at Rena Rouge. “Oh good, if there was someone I wanted to short circuit more than this busy signal, it was you. Prepare to be disconnected!” she snarled.
Rena Rouge turned to Alya Césaire, smiled and said, “You better get out of here. Find a place to hide, and I’ll take care of this one.”
Alya felt so strange talking to her own self that all that she could do was look up at the fox-costumed character. Suddenly, she felt a pair of strong hands lift her to her feet. She turned, and was surprised to find herself looking at a more muscular Alya wearing a kickboxing outfit.
“Who are you?” she stammered out.
“No time,” the other Alya declared, and pushed her up the street. “Less talk and more action, Creampuff!”
The two took off running up the street, away from the Champ de Mars.
Lady Wifi and Rena Rouge glared at each other, and then simultaneously dropped into their fighting stances.
FIGHT! []
Lady Wifi lifted her phone, and swiped a series of pause icons at her opponent.
Rena Rouge drew and spun her flute, creating a glowing shield that destroyed each incoming icon.
Lady Wifi snarled at her opponent, and moved towards her. Holding her phone in her left hand, she punched out with her right fist, and then attempted a kick with her left foot.
Rena Rouge blocked each of the strikes with her flute, and then kicked out with her own left foot, sending Lady Wifi falling backwards. She rolled over quickly, and leaped up into the air. Her whole body seemed to turn into white light, and then she disappeared.
Rena Rouge looked around, trying to reacquire her opponent.
On top of a nearby building, mauve electricity seemed to surge up the pole of a cell phone tower. It reached the peak, and formed into a silhouette of white light, which transformed into Lady Wifi.
She looked up the street, and saw the two Alya’s fleeing away, and the confused Rena Rouge standing in an intersection below her, looking this way and that.
“So many targets, so little time,” she chuckled to herself. Oh well, why limit herself?
So, she pointed her phone down at Rena Rouge and fired two pause icons at her. Then, she spun and fired two at the Alyas.
Standing in the street, Rena Rouge more felt than saw the incoming icons. She dove forward, rolled a summersault, and then leaped to her feet. The icons crashed onto the pavement where she had been standing.
Now she knew where Lady Wifi was!
She continued her run, and leaped. She bounced off a building on the far side of the street, and launched herself up towards the top of the building, where Lady Wifi was.
Lady Wifi snarled when she saw the Alyas round the corner, causing the icons to miss them by mere centimeters!
Suddenly, there was a thump, as Rena Rouge landed on the roof with her.
Rena Rouge lifted her flute like a baton, and charged at Lady Wifi.
Lady Wifi leaped into the air, causing her opponent to run by beneath her, and then she landed and began firing pause icons at her.
Rena Rouge spun her flute, blocking each attack, until Lady Wifi lowered her phone and growled in frustration.
She glanced down at the street, and suddenly her face lit up in a bright smile. She turned back to Rena Rouge and said, “It’s time to go take care of the weakest link. You stay here dim bulb.”
Then she leaped into the air, turned into white light, and disappeared.
Down where the men were fighting in the street, their phones all rang at the same time, with the same ringtone. They all stopped, and opened their phones, and suddenly a bright light shot out of one, and transformed into Lady Wifi.
Quick as a flash, Lady Wifi spun, kicking out at the men, and sending them flying away. Then, standing in a ring of dropped cell phones, she slyly glanced sideways at the rooftop she had been on, and smiled.
She turned toward the building alongside of her, cupped her hands around her mouth, and shouted, “Where are you Alya? It’s time to cancel your contract!”
Rena Rouge heard Lady Wifi shouting in the street below, and she looked down. She didn’t think that Alya would be foolish enough to expose herself, but she couldn’t take a chance.
So, she stepped back, took a running start, and leaped off of the roof. She seemed to fly through the air, as she soared down to the street. Her heels hit the pavement, and she immediately dropped into a somersault, coming up towards Lady Wifi.
Lady Wifi stood her ground until Rena Rouge was nearly on top of her, and then she suddenly flashed into light and disappeared.
Immediately, she shot up from one of the dropped cell phone, and punched Rena Rouge in the side of the head.
Rena Rouge swung her flute at Lady Wifi’s head, but before it could connect the villain flashed into light and disappeared.
She shot up behind Rena Rouge, and snapped a kick at her back, sending her sprawling to the street.
She leaped up, and dropped into her fighting stance, but Lady Wifi appeared on her side and punched her in the kidney. As Rena Rouge began to turn, Lady Wifi flashed to her other side, and kneed her in the stomach.
The attacks now came as quick as lighting, with Lady Wifi appearing, attacking and disappearing, almost faster than the eye could see.
Rena Rouge stumbled and dropped to her knees, and Lady Wifi appeared and kicked her in the face, sending her rolling across the street. The hero knew that she had to get out of this circle, or her opponent would quickly beat her to death.
She leaped up, and before she even got to her feet, Lady Wifi was on her, and delivered a savage kick that sent her flying up the street. This was the chance she needed!
Rena Rouge leaped to her feet, turned and ran around a corner building, disappearing from Lady Wifi’s sight. She quickly drew her flute, played a little tune, and said as quietly as she dared, “Mirage.”
There was a ring from a nearby phone, and suddenly there was a flash of light and Lady Wifi appeared before her.
“You didn’t think that you could get away from me that easily, did you?” she sneered.
Rena Rouge smiled at her and said, “Oh, I wasn’t trying to get away, I just needed to activate my Destruction power.”
“Your what?!” Lady Wifi shouted, a surprised look on her face.
Rena Rouge turned toward the cell phone tower that was above them, shouted “Rena Rouge Destruction!” and made a pulling gesture towards it.
Sparks flew from the tower, as the metal gave way, and whole structure collapsed with a crash.
“That’s not possible,” Lady Wifi gasped.
She looked at her cell phone, and saw the bars disappear. “You don’t have that power!” she cried in horror.
“You’d be amazed at what I can do,” Rena Rouge said with a wink.
Then, she leaped forward and threw a series of punches at Lady Wifi. The villain blocked the punches, but then a kick caught her in the stomach and sent her over backwards onto the ground. Her cell phone skittered across the concrete.
She leaped to her feet, but the hero was on her before she could begin to move. Rena Rouge drew her flute from her back, and struck Lady Wifi first on one side of the head, and then the other. Then she spun around, and kicked out, knocking the feet out from under Lady Wifi.
Rena Rouge leaped onto her, as quick as lightning, raised her flute in both hands, and brought it down with savage force.
The flute went past the prone villain’s head, and struck her cell phone, shattering it into numerous pieces.
Lady Wifi screamed, turned into white light, and then disintegrated into...nothing.
K.O.! []
Rena Rouge stood up, sighed, and looked up at the top of the building. When she commanded "Reality," the illusion disappeared, and the cell tower stood as it had for years.
Suddenly, the two Alya’s ran out of a nearby building, and up to Rena Rouge. The smaller Alya hugged the hero’s left arm, while the kick boxer slapped her on the back, almost causing her to stumble forward.
Then, they heard Ladybug shout, “Miraculous Ladybug!” Instantly, a swarm of bright ladybugs swirled around the street, and past the three women.
When the swarm cleared, Alya found herself standing alone in the middle of the street.
She drew her cell phone, began recording, and said, “This is Alya Césaire...”
Suddenly, she realized that she didn’t know what to say.
Results[]
Boomstick: Wow, what a Millennial way to die – death caused by destruction of your cell phone!
Wiz: The ending of this fight was a bit of a surprise. Victims of akumatization are usually more powerful that their Miraculous opposites. For example, Rena Rouge can only use her Mirage power once, while her akumatized counterpart, Volpina could cast illusion after illusion.
Boomstick: And, how many evilized victims were Ladybug and Cat Noir able to defeat singlehanded?
Wiz: In this case, however, the powers and the abilities of the two opponents were very asymmetrical. Lady Wifi could fire her pause icons, but Ladybug and Cat Noir demonstrated that they could be blocked by their Miraculous weapons. Indeed, when fighting the Sapotis, Rena Rouge demonstrated that she could easily deal with multiple incoming attacks.
Boomstick: When it came to acrobatics, Lady Wifi showed very little ability, while Rena Rouge can leap far and run fast. Indeed, while Ladybug uses her yo-yo to pull herself around the city, and Cat Noir uses his telescoping staff to vault himself, Rena Rouge is able to keep up with them, when just leaping. This seems to suggest that she might be the most agile of all of the Miraculous heroes.
Wiz: But the biggest difference between the two combatants was in their hand-to-hand combat abilities. Lady Wifi did well in hand-to-hand combat, and even got the drop on Cat Noir, pinning him to the ground. Nonetheless, she had to do it one handed, the other hand being reserved for holding her phone.
Boomstick: As such, Lady Wifi tended to rely on her phone in combat, showering her opponents with icons. But, as we’ve already seen, this was just not enough to overcome her counterpart. And now, she’s been permanently disconnected.
Wiz: That’s right, the winner is Rena Rouge.
Trivia[]
- When I first started researching this battle, I was sure that Lady Wifi would win. I even created a “The Winner is...” card for her. However, as I watched both characters in action, I saw that the advantage was clearly with Rena Rouge. My expectations were definitely subverted!
- Henri Navarre was a student of psychiatry in Paris, who was working on a psychological examination of the effect of Miraculouses on their wearers. His thesis being that the magical items caused a form of schizophrenia. After being laughed to scorn by his friends and teachers, Navarre was akumatized by Hawk Moth, becoming the Disassociator (OC). He was defeated by Ladybug and Cat Noir, but later returned to his new identity, becoming an international supervillain. His battle with the Anima in Bern, Switzerland, caused the near destruction of the entire city.
