History[]
Hailing from the lineage of the legendary Great Kung Lao, who died fighting Goro 500 years ago, Kung Lao is a potent warrior, though his immaturity and impulsiveness tends to hinder his potential as a great warrior. Despite this, he maintains a close friendship with Liu Kang, as both a brother in arms and partner, having fought together side by side at Raiden's behest. In MK9, against the Shaolin's orders, Kung Lao illegally participated in the tournament disguised as one of Shang Tsung's guards and challenged Scorpion to kombat, which he later lost. When Liu Kang was out in hiatus due his willingness to save Kitana from execution, Kung Lao was chosen by Raiden to participate the tournament on his behalf, but was killed by Shao Kahn in the process. He continued serving Quan Chi as one of his Revenant bodyguards after his death, but later served as one of Shinnok's servants.
In spite of his laziness compared to his more competent ancestor, Kung Lao is formidable in a fight and trusty as he is reliable to count on. He is never seen without his razor-sharp hat, and even then, he teases Liu Kang's relationship with Kitana, describing her as "out of his league".
In the New Era created by Fire God Liu Kang, Kung Lao retains most of his characteristics from his previous counterpart, only this time he is now close friends with a younger mortal Raiden.
