Kasumi vs. Kitana is the 58th episode of DEATH BATTLE! by Shadow7615, featuring Kasumi from the Dead or Alive series and Kitana from the Mortal Kombat series in a battle between blue-clad ninja princesses.
Interlude[]
Wiz: Ninja, these historic agents of assassination are among the most proficient killers in history. But in some cases, a ninja may hail from a distinguished family line and are crowned with the responsibility of ruling their people.
Boomstick: And sometimes, they look good doing it! Like Kasumi, the Kunoichi of Destiny.
Wiz: And Kitana, Princess of Edenia.
Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick!
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.
Kasumi[]
Wiz: Hidden away in the mountains of Japan lived a secret society of ninja, the Mugen Tenshin clan. Eighteen generations strong, they'd forged friendships and made enemies, but remained concealed to the world at large.
Boomstick: Ninja, the most qualified people to keep a secret. And when your secret is an entire village full of shinobi, it's no surprise that the only people who ever found out about them were megacorporations and ally ninja clans.
Wiz: As the seventeenth leader, Shiden continued the ways of the shinobi. Many believed his rule would one day pass to either his son, Hayate, or his daughter, Kasumi. Despite being the younger of the two, Kasumi wasn't ignored. As she trained, she became an equally capable candidate to lead the clan, despite being 6 years younger than Hayate. Perhaps Shiden would finally know peace between siblings.
Boomstick: But surprise surprise, Shiden had a brother, Raidou, and he wasn't exactly the most chill dude. He decided to uh... "have his way" with Shiden's wife, Ayame one year after Kasumi was born, which got him exiled from the clan. And 9 months later a kid popped out. And now Raidou had returned, so you can imagine people were pretty pissed.
Popup: Raidou had returned to steal the Torn Sky Blast, a rare and powerful technique used only by the leaders and heirs of the clan, including Kasumi.
Wiz: Hayate tried to stop his uncle, but was soundly defeated. Kasumi was then given the mantle of being the clan's eighteenth leader. But when she learned their uncle was responsible, she abandoned the village in pursuit of revenge. Although it was motivated by well-intended aspirations to keep the village's status a secret, doing so made Kasumi a Nukenin, or a missing shinobi.
Boomstick: Since she bailed on the entire clan, she'd been put on their kill list. Being pursued by her half-sister Ayane. Except Kasumi wasn't an easy target, she was trained to one day lead the clan, after all, so she's got a lot of skill. Kasumi carries a lot of the ninja approved gear, like throwing kunai, windmill shurikens and a Wakazashi, basically a smaller version of a katana.
Wiz: Her Wakazashi, Shrouded Moon is generally her main weapon, though she's equally capable with all the weapons in her inventory. Not only does Kasumi have the loadout of a ninja, but she's got plenty of powerful techniques as well. During her training, Kasumi gained the ability to harness and manipulate magical energy to perform powerful Ninpo techniques. Which can be applied in numerous ways.
Boomstick: She can teleport, heal wounds and perform the Mugen Tenshin clan's most famous technique of all, the Torn Sky Blast. Where she goes Kamehameha and launches a blast of lightning-like energy, it's easily her most powerful Ninpo technique, I can see why they only taught that to the leaders and heirs of the clan, it's pretty damn strong. But if she wants to perform less powerful ninpo blasts, she can use small projectiles, which make a big kaboom!
Popup: Among Kasumi's other skills, she's also a skilled volleyball player thanks to her numerous visits to Zack's Island.
Wiz: Beyond her weaponry and magical energies, Kasumi is an incredible martial artist. Having trained in the Mugen Tenshin clan's Tenjinmon style, Kasumi approaches fights with evasion and defence in mind. Though when going on the offensive, she makes good use of grapples and fast combos. She can efficiently combine her attacks with the use of her Ninpo to maximize their effectiveness in battle.
Boomstick: Plus, she can run on walls, dash through midair and has the staple "Ninja sense" which lets her sense where she needs to go. Plus if she needs to, she can use her epic ninja skills to conceal herself and remain hidden. Though it seems kinda impractical, what with the blue and white outfit. Feels like the colours you wouldn't wear if you wanted to avoid detection.
Wiz: Though even if you did find Kasumi, taking her down is a difficult task, as she's accomplished plenty of feats befitting a ninja of her position. When she found Raidou, Kasumi had to enter the first-ever Dead or Alive tournament just to face him. So even before facing Raidou, Kasumi was already an accomplished fighter, having defeated eight other participants, including Ayane.
Boomstick: And then she faced off with Raidou in an epic Torn Sky Blast battle, and although she couldn't overpower him by herself, once Raidou was weakened by a surprise attack from Ryu Hayabusa, Kasumi was able to deliver the finishing blow. And with that, she'd accomplished what she set out to do. And it didn't even end there.
Popup: Throughout the series, there have been six Dead or Alive tournaments. Kasumi is among the few who have participated in every single one of them.
Wiz: Despite her victory, Kasumi was captured by DOATEC, where they stole her DNA and used it to produce clones of Kasumi. They were hoping to create the ultimate fighter, and since Kasumi had won the first Dead or Alive Tournament, they figured she was the best candidate. While many Kasumi clones were created, their magnum opus was Alpha-152.
Boomstick: Who had a combination of Kasumi, Ayane, Hayate and Ryu Hayabusa's moves and techniques, and Kasumi still won! Even when Raidou got resurrected, Kasumi and her siblings triple-teamed him into destruction. And let's not forget that from the moment she left the village, she's been constantly hunted by her clan. So it's safe to say Kasumi has more than proven she's in the same league as her fellow ninja. In particular, she's pretty comparable to Ryu Hayabusa.
Wiz: Ryu Hayabusa does share a few common traits with Kasumi, both have won Dead or Alive tournaments, both utilize ninjutsu, and can use the Torn Sky Blast. Ryu Hayabusa has dodged automatic fire and missiles from aircraft. He has also dodged lightning on three separate occasions. The fastest among these put Hayabusa at Mach 1015 speeds. Given that Kasumi's speeds are said to be faster than Hayabusa, she should be capable of similar feats.
Boomstick: She's also comparable to her half-sister Ayane, and she uses a technique comparable to the Torn Sky Blast. With one use of that technique, she destroyed the middle floors of the DOATEC Tritower. So it's likely Kasumi can use the Torn Sky Blast to destroy large buildings. Plus she defeated Obaba, who was the size of a building.
Popup: Kasumi has defeated Espigonos, an evil fiendish clone of Ryu Hayabusa that can mimic his powers.
Wiz: While Kasumi stands among the most proficient ninja in the world, she doesn't go looking for fights. Kasumi is a pacifist, usually refraining from fighting others unless there are no other options, or she's motivated by personal reasons, such as when she went after Raidou. While pacifism is never a bad thing, Kasumi would prefer to avoid a fight if possible. But that doesn't make her any less skilled in a fight.
Boomstick: Though even when she does want to use her powers, she doesn't have a perfect track record. While her losses are few, she did lose to Hayate at least twice. Plus, let's not forget that her revenge quest was what ultimately lead to Kasumi getting cloned in the first place.
Wiz: Also, Kasumi's Ninpo is a finite resource. Since her Ninpo has so many applications, it's a risk for her to use it in large amounts, such as with the Torn Sky Blast. And because it's the same resource she uses for healing and teleportation, it can greatly affect her combative approach if she runs out of Ninpo during a fight.
Boomstick: But on the bright side, Kasumi and Ayane sorted out their rough relationship, and now they're working with each other, and not against each other. And I call that progress!
Kasumi: Perhaps I have become a little stronger.
Kitana[]
Boomstick: MORTAL KOMBAT! Dododo-dodododododo-dodododo!
Wiz: Nice. The Mortal Kombat tournament was a major event that saw many realms participate. As Outworld's power increased, the Elder Gods decreed they could not merge with another realm unless they achieved ten consecutive Mortal Kombat victories. Unfortunately, this was the fate for the most peaceful and prosperous realm of all, Edenia.
Boomstick: Outworld's ruler, Shao Kahn wrecked Edenia's champions ten times in a row, allowing him to merge Outworld with Edenia. If that wasn't enough, he decided to legitimize his rule by killing the current King, Jerrod, marrying Jerrod's wife Sindel, and becoming the stepfather of their daughter, Kitana.
Wiz: Not long after, Sindel sacrificed her life to ward off Shao Kahn's invasion of Earthrealm. With both of her parents gone, and only Shao Kahn left to raise her, Kitana spent the next 10,000 years becoming one of Outworld's greatest assassins, loyally serving Shao Kahn for several millennia.
Popup: Although Kitana did not appear in the original Mortal Kombat, the 2011 reboot retroactively establishes Kitana as a tournament spectator.
Boomstick: And you better believe she became a top tier assassin, but secretly, Kitana plotted against Shao Kahn, although it took her a long time to figure out the truth, once she learned that Shao Kahn murdered her father, Kitana feigned her loyalty, hoping that thousands of years of being by his side would trick him into thinking they were allies. Kitana plotted her revenge whilst also hoping Edenia could one day be unmerged.
Wiz: While Kitana is known for many things, her Steel Fans certainly stand among them. Her iconic weapons work effectively at slicing her opponent's throats. They also have some long-range capabilities, for example, Kitana can use her fans to generate wind beneath her opponents, lifting them into the air. All of this and more is part of Kitana's primary martial art, Tessenjutsu, the martial art of the war fan.
Boomstick: You gotta watch out for people like that, fans are a tricky weapon if used by the right person. But Kitana has more weapons than just her fans, she also uses her friend Jade's Bo Staff. Since Jade and Kitana were close friends and two of Shao Kahn's best assassins, when Jade died at the hands of a resurrected Sindel, Kitana claimed them as her own, giving her some familiarity with Bojutsu.
Wiz: Essentially the Japanese martial art of using a Bo Staff. Jade's Bo Staff can expand and retract for easy storage. She also uses Jade's Razor-rang. A razor-sharp boomerang, but instead, it has three blades. Though Kitana is proficient in other martial arts, primarily two. Eagle Claw and Ba Gua, the former of the two is a Chinese martial art focused around gripping techniques, pressure point combat, takedowns, and system of joint locks.
Popup: Although Kitana dedicated use of Jade's weapons to her Mournful variant, she has far less experience with Jade's weapons as opposed to her own. She is also known to have carried Mileena's Sais.
Boomstick: Ba Gua is also a Chinese martial art, except this one is all about open hand combat rather than closed fists, the perfect solution to all your drinking habit needs. Think it's time I studied some martial arts, Wiz, they're getting more accommodating to my needs.
Wiz: Well, you do you. But for Kitana, she uses her martial arts skill and weapons for plenty of powerful attacks. She can throw her Steel Fans in case her enemies like fighting from a distance. She can even boost herself into the air with her fans, useful for airborne attacks. She can also teleport, usually for getting in close behind her opponent for surprise attacks.
Boomstick: Oh yeah, did we mention if Kitana closes up her fans, they make for great stabbing weapons? One of Kitana's more brutal options in a fight, and perfect for carving up a turkey on Thanksgiving Day! Where do I get one? And speaking of which, Kitana wouldn't be a Mortal Kombat character if she didn't have some beautiful fatalities!
Wiz: She can throw her Steel Fans like buzzsaws and slice you up from the neck and waist. She can cut open your body and spin inside a localized tornado fast enough to pull out your organs, all the while you remain alive. But if Kitana wants to end things more simplistically, she can kiss her victims before they spontaneously inflate and explode in bloody fashion.
Popup: Kitana's Kiss of Death fatality was inspired by the demise of Dr Kananga in the James Bond film Live and Let Die.
Boomstick: With all this, it's no wonder Kitana ended up being a major player in the grand scheme of things. She's defeated plenty of powerful characters, like Smoke, Johnny Cage, Jade, Mileena and even the cunning Shang Tsung. And that guy can just steal people's souls! And given that she's more than just the average Mortal Kombat character, she can likely achieve similar feats as others.
Wiz: In particular, Kabal and Johnny Cage. Kabal was able to move fast enough to parry machine gun fire, accomplishing this means Kabal moved at almost Mach 3 speeds to pull it off. As for Johnny, he survived an attack from Oni Warlords that were capable of destructive feats worth 2.5 tons of TNT.
Boomstick: And perhaps Kitana's most impressive feat is defeating Shao Kahn. See, Kronika, the Keeper of Time, was trying to restart the entire Mortal Kombat timeline, so she ended up bringing past versions of certain characters to the present, which included Kitana. And after Shao Kahn bested his replacement, Kotal Kahn, Kitana was able to overwhelm Shao, blinding him, putting him out of commission.
Wiz: Although keep in mind, this wasn't Shao Kahn at his strongest, so Kitana isn't on the same level of power as her stepfather. Nevertheless, the victory not only saw Kitana get her revenge, but Kotal Kahn recognized Kitana as his successor, and thusly she had become Kitana Kahn, the fifth Kahn ever crowned. And she united both the Tarkatans and the Shokan, something unheard of in Outworld's history.
Popup: Despite successfully becoming Kahn, Kitana's status has become dubious as the events of Aftermath leave her fate unconfirmed.
Boomstick: Or at least, that's how this timeline of events unfolded. Originally, things weren't so great for Kitana. In the first timeline, she dies during the fateful Battle of Armageddon, unable to match the most powerful beings in the Mortal Kombat universe. Raiden later reset that timeline, but in this new timeline, Sindel gets resurrected, kills her, and Kitana becomes a Revenant, and spends the rest of her days as Empress of the Netherrealm before she got killed by Shao Kahn and Sindel.
Wiz: And for the most part, this plays into some of Kitana's weaknesses, she has been manipulated throughout the series on multiple occasions, especially by those with incredible cunning, like Shang Tsung. Plus, she grew up believing Shao Kahn was her father, only later finding out about Jerrod. And while she's experienced, she's been defeated by plenty of younger beings, like Liu Kang, Cassie Cage and Sonya Blade.
Boomstick: Though really, all these timelines at least keep one thing consistent, making Kitana a double-helping of lethal and beautiful. Who could blame you for liking someone like that? What's more, Kitana managed to get lucky by getting cuddly with the Shaolin monk Liu Kang, and he's had just as crazy a ride through these timelines as she has.
Wiz: Truly, even multiple diverging timelines cannot break apart the love two people can share. It's a wonderful thing.
Kitana: Yes. But no matter how we sculpt the Sands, we cannot plan for every possibility. Mortals will make their own choices. New evils will arise.
DEATH BATTLE![]
Wiz: Alright, the combatants are set, and we've run the data through all possibilities.
Boomstick: It's time for a DEATH BATTLE!
The sun rose for the beginnings of a new day, soon the morning sun had risen high enough for the skies to turn blue. Not long after, the sun's light finally rose over the heights of a massive structure. And with the welcomed arrival of the sun came the presence of combat, soon many had gathered to witness the spectacle of many fighters duking it out in the gladiatorial coliseum that was the Kahn's Arena. While there were many combatants, the fighting itself proved to be not exactly entertaining.
That is, until a new face entered the arena, drawing the attention of the spectators and the sitting Kahn observing the newcomer's debut. With a motion of their hand, an opponent step forward, and the two begin fighting. Though their combat was not handled in a sloppy matter, beneath the combatants' feet laid a concrete linear pathway, which was used specifically for the fighting participants. Fighting was not something to be mishandled or managed poorly.
Combat in this arena was fair and ensured every participant had an equal opportunity to test their might, and so far it had progressed smoothly. As victories were declared, they were succeeded with more combat, but in an interesting turn of events, one combatant appears to be garnering a consecutive set of victories. With each win, a much larger viewing audience gathered, and cheers from the spectators arose with each subsequent victory claimed by this one combatant.
Before long, the coliseum was almost fully packed, all of them entertained by the impressive skill display by one fighter. Some asked how this could be the power of one person, others pondered if the challenger was somehow empowered by the Elder Gods, or chosen as a champion of their realm. All of this was within the realm of speculation, but it nevertheless generated a lot of discussions and had brought about a more grandiose show.
The latest combatant to fight this consecutive winner was determined to prove themselves by bringing down the winner with a hot streak. As the two combat one another, the fight quickly revealed that one of them was on a disadvantage, and rather soundly, the latest combatant was knocked out and defeated. The audience cheered once more, celebrating another victory. The people loved this winner.
Although the winner did appreciate the praise they were receiving, they weren't trying showing off or otherwise boasting about their success. This attracted the attention of the sitting Kahn, who had personally observed every single fight that had been ever conducted in this coliseum. And it was exceedingly rare to see a combatant like this fare so well. They had proven themselves more than worthy of being regarded as a champion.
Nevertheless, the Kahn was determined to see if this challenger could achieve a certain number of consecutive victories, allowing another opponent to step forward. Just as before, the fight unfolded and concluded with the same outcome. Soon, the Kahn's conditions were going to be met. As if it was preordained, the challenger successfully managed to claim victory a tenth time. With ten consecutive victories in hand, the Kahn rose from the throne and stepped forward.
"Congratulations, Earthrealmer, you have successfully attained ten consecutive victories" the Kahn addressed. Further stepping away from the throne, the Kahn of Outworld approached the challenger. Sporting a sleek attire of black and blue, with slightly pronounced shoulder pads. Complimented by a blue headband which keeps her hair tied up. This was Outworld's current Kahn, Kitana. She greeted the victor for their accomplishment.
The audience was surprised to see the Kahn rise from her throne to greet the victor, it was something practically unheard of. Nevertheless, the Kahn and the victor seemed to converse. "Due to your commendable efforts, I would like to offer you one final challenge" Kitana offered. The challenger was also dressed in blue, but also sported white on the edges of her attire and wore white stockings. Though some parts of her skin were exposed.
Her hair was copper in colour. And although she had just defeated ten opponents, she remained completely unscathed by those encounters. This was the Kunoichi of Destiny, Kasumi. "I shall be your opponent." Kitana declared. It sent a shock through the entire audience, the situation was just escalating more and more. And now the Kahn herself wanted to participate. This had certainly raised the bar compared to everything else that had been hosted within the walls of the coliseum.
"Since I have no other choice..." Kasumi solemnly thought to herself. "Very well, I accept your challenge" she firmly responded. Kitana gracefully gestured to the acceptance of her challenge. Kasumi remained where she was whilst Kasumi returned to her throne and retrieved her weapons, which had been left to the side. Now properly armed for a fight. Kitana approached the pavement laid out for combatants, having watched so many fights here, now Kitana was reminded of what fighting in front of another felt like.
"I can't avoid this fight." Kasumi thought to herself. As Kitana held her two weapons, the Steel Fans in her hands, she opened them and swung her fans diagonally downward, and did so with enough force to kick up a blue tornado that surrounded her, raising Kitana into the air. Kasumi watched in awe. After a second or two, the tornado begins to die down, and Kitana descends to the ground with grace, as she stands ready to fight.
The audience's excitement escalates to newfound heights as the two combatants stand at the ready, waiting to see who was going to make the first move. Kasumi focused her attention here and now, steadily waiting to see if she would initiate or retaliate. She kept her weapons on standby, knowing that they were fair game. Kitana noticed Kasumi had not drawn out any of her weapons and made a note of that in her mind, combatants like Kasumi were not simplistic fighters, there was more to Kasumi, and she knew it.
FIGHT!
(Cue Ninja Soul - Ninja Gaiden 3)
With the battle underway, the two began moving slowly, sizing up their opponent. And just moments later, Kitana moved first. She begins by punching Kasumi, but the Kunoichi easily anticipates the attack coming, and dodges it, she, in turn, kicks Kitana. But her attack also doesn't connect, as Kitana narrowly steps backward. With the two needing just a moment to recover from their failed attacks, they were soon back at it.
This time, Kasumi initiated, racing ahead to Kitana, who was quickly alarmed by her foe's speed. This was not something she'd displayed during the ten prior matches. Looks like Kasumi was willing to use the extent of her capabilities, and Kitana knew she would do the same. But this only came after Kasumi lands two punches on Kitana, and then a second kick to leave her vulnerable. However, Kitana picks herself up and performs a backflip, successfully evading Kasumi's kick.
While leaping back, Kitana throws her two Steel Fans at her opponent, who also backflips to avoid both of them. During her backflip, Kasumi notices the light reflect off the fans, informing her of their metallic nature. The projectile weapons land on the ground behind them. After they both land on their feet, they resume the engagement in their fighting stances. Although Kitana was without a weapon, she was comfortable with the fight as it is.
Keeping in mind the opponent's weapons laid behind her, Kasumi had concluded she must ensure they aren't retrieved back into enemy hands. As she carefully stepped around the coliseum's battlefield, she watched Kitana's actions, and what she would do next. Naturally, Kitana mode a move, dashing toward her Steel Fans. But Kasumi almost immediately took action, closing the distance between herself and Kitana. The two again sprung into close-quarters combat. Kasumi remained on the defensive, looking for an opening.
On one successful block, Kasumi sprung into action, redirecting Kasumi's intended punch before grappling the Edenian. Kasumi began to press her grapple, tightening the grip she held on Kitana. But the Edenian's strength was a sufficient match, and soon Kitana used her legs to free herself from Kasumi's grasp. In a short lapse of time, Kasumi was caught off guard by the Edenian's strength. But that was quickly met with Kitana responded with a gripping of her own.
Had Kitana possessed her Steel Fans, she would have been able to end the fight right then and there. Nevertheless, she reached to her side, where she pulled out a Sai, one that exuded a pink aura about it. With a steady hand, she stabbed Kasumi in the torso with the weapon, causing the Kunoichi to yell in pain. But just before Kitana could follow up with a repeat stab, Kasumi suddenly became quiet and closed her eyes. And without warning, Kasumi vanished from sight, escaping Kitana's clutches.
Flower petals surrounded Kitana as she seemed almost amazed by the sight she'd witnessed. The sound of something cutting through the wind then alarmed Kitana, unfortunately, she was not able to react quickly enough and received a cut on her face, which tore part off part of her mask. Kasumi landed on the ground, confirming that her shuriken hit its mark. Halting herself immediately, Kitana grazed her finger over the open wound.
She'd returned the blood, and now both of them had drawn crimson out of their opponent. She looked to see what had hit her and noticed the kunai tipped with blood. Looking in the direction of where it came from, she saw Kasumi standing there, holding another kunai in her hands, ready to be thrown at a moment's notice. Kitana realized her predicament and knew she needed to do something. Determined to defeat her opponent, Kasumi tossed her second kunai, but Kitana evaded the weapon and jumped to a nearby pillar.
She immediately launched herself from the pillar and collided with Kasumi. The two hit the ground and just within arm's reach were the Steel Fans. Without wasting another second, Kitana grabbed her Steel Fans and thrust them at Kasumi's head, but before the fans could draw out even more blood, Kasumi again vanished from sight. Immediately, Kitana felt her Steel Fans move closer to the ground than they should have of. Stunned, Kitana looked around, attempting to locate the Kunoichi.
However, her efforts were stopped as Kasumi performed a powerful kick to Kitana's back, knocking her forward. Just in the nick of time, Kitana rolled, allowing her a smooth transition onto her feet. But just as she got up, Kasumi had already caught up to her, performing a punch to the face, followed up with a punch to the chest and finally, a kick which successfully struck Kitana in the waist, the fast combo quickly grounded Kitana. She laid on the floor completely dazed.
With her combo accomplished, Kasumi stood patiently, waiting to see what course of action the battle would now take. As the Edenian came back to her senses, she rose to her feet and kept her Steel Fans at the ready. "I see you're a cut above the rest, Earthrealmer. But now you must fight with everything you have" Kitana commented. With her mask dangling, unable to protect her face, Kitana removed it, revealing a rather beautiful face for someone who's lived over ten thousand years.
The bloody scar that rested on Kitana's face seemed to begin drying up. Kasumi noticed that but did notice the blood that was elsewhere was still fresh. The fight was beginning to take on its true form, while Kasumi's wounds were mended, she nevertheless realized the danger of her opponent, and came to a conclusion in her head. Kasumi knew the tactic she needed to employ, but rushing in headfirst wasn't a great idea, she had once pursued Raidou, and that ultimately had major ramifications she could not have ever planned for.
The two fighters take their stance once more. It became just as important to fight at your best, as it was to treat your opponent fairly. The fight nevertheless proved a challenge for both. As both fighters had readied themselves up, Kasumi commenced the battle again, she charged toward Kitana, looking to land a strong blow. The Edenian acted on her opponent's move and tossed her two fans straight toward the Kunoichi.
But again, she suddenly seemed to vanish. Kitana immediately surveyed her surroundings but didn't find Kasumi behind her. And that's when she realized she had not considered every angle. Suddenly two kunai struck Kitana on her shoulders, which strained her arm movement. Kasumi herself descended from above and slammed into Kitana, and with the weight bearing down on Kitana, she was slammed into the ground.
With a golden opportunity, Kasumi delivered a quick follow up, ripping one of her kunai from Kitana's shoulder and immediately using it to stab Kitana in the heart. But the Edenian quickly hatched a countermeasure, once again bringing her Sai into play, she wedged the Sai's prongs between the kunai, which halted it directly in front of Kitana's face. The two engaged in a tug of war, each seeking to reign supreme. But Kasumi did not persist in the standoff for long, as she grabbed the second kunai and doubled her might.
Seeing the weapons close to her face invoked something within Kitana, an urge to push back and fight even harder. She reached to her waist with her newly freed left hand and grabbed hold of the bo staff. She immediately expanded the weapon to its combat-oriented length and swing at Kasumi's head, disorienting the Kunoichi and completely breaking her attack's lethality. Kasumi fell to the side as Kitana was able to successfully get back onto her feet.
Seizing the chance she had afforded, Kitana swings Jade's Bo Staff, striking Kasumi once again. This time sending her several meters across. The Edenian recalled her weapons were close by, so she quickly retrieved them, but kept them hidden away since Jade's Bo Staff was proving to be a surprise weapon that has given her an advantage. Kasumi rose to her feet once again, only to be immediately contested by Kitana.
Just like before, the Bo Staff had come to strike. But before any more hits could be dished out, Kitana's swing was stopped by another weapon, something far more potent than a kunai or shuriken. Kasumi had brandished Shrouded Moon, her Wakizashi. The sharp blade kept the Bo Staff at bay. And bought Kasumi the time she needed to stand evenly with her foe. Delivering a kick, Kasumi broke through Kitana's offence and had now put her back on the defence.
With her weapon especially useful right now, Kasumi charged toward Kitana, becoming a bit more assertive than she had been before, rapidly swinging her blade, continuing to enforce the latter's defence. But Kasumi's strikes seemed to increase, a and were happening a lot faster, which had begun to overwhelm Kasumi more and more, her Bo Staff simply wasn't going to cut it. And her estimation was correct, Kasumi's Wakizashi successfully cut Kitana on both her arms, which weakened her grip on the Bo Staff.
Now with a vulnerable foe, Kasumi kicked the Bo Staff out of Kitana's hands. It spun the skies above as Kitana realized her predicament, and that her fans were all she had to fall back on. Kasumi thrust her Wakizashi forward, intend on striking down the Edenian. In a desperate attempt, Kitana raised her steel fan in front of her, and the Wakizashi pierced through the Steel Fan, almost to the hilt. But that moment turned into a chance to turn the fight into the Edenian's favour.
(Cue Fields of Honor - Kingdom Hearts HD II.5 ReMIX)
Using two hands, Kitana forcibly closed her Steel Fan, firmly holding onto the Wakizashi's blade. She acted quickly and twisted the fan with a tilt of her wrist, the sudden change in momentum caused Kasumi to release the grip of her weapon. The sword flew for a brief moment, before Kitana grabbed the hilt with her right hand, claiming the weapon as her own. She entered a stance, now pointing Kasumi's weapon at her.
This maneuver completely astonished Kasumi. And Kitana wasn't done, she further pointed the sword at Kasumi's head. At that moment, Kasumi genuinely felt fear and was almost going to panic. But she quickly swallowed that fear to continue the battle. Kasumi initiated with another one of her martial arts techniques, but unexpectedly, Kitana thrust the sword into the ground and used the momentum to push herself toward Kasumi, as she firmly kept her grip on the weapon's hilt.
With the boost from lifting herself off the ground, Kitana delivered a kick directly toward Kasumi's face, the blow forced Kasumi to close her eyes, and it resulted in her losing balance. Kitana immediately took advantage of this and once she landed on the ground, released her grip from the sword and replicated what Kasumi had previously done to her. With her outstretched right leg, Kitana performed a sweeping kick which toppled Kasumi and knocked her to the ground.
Decisively overwhelmed in just a few moves, Kasumi collected herself as best she could. But Kitana had already taken one extra step and knew there was no holding Kasumi at blade or fan point, the fight was as good as finished at this point. She thrust her weapons ready to land a finishing blow. But instead of evading again, Kasumi had her shuriken held in her hand, and she flung it moments before Kitana's weapons could've reached her.
One of the shurikens struck Kitana on the face, which altered the path of her fans, missing Kasumi completely. In an inspired move, Kasumi noticed the Bo Staff rested on Kitana's waist. She grabbed the Bo Staff from its holster, which triggered its switch to normal length. Kasumi stunned Kitana by slamming her face with the hilt of her Bo Staff, she quickly turned and struck Kitana a second time, using the end of the Bo Staff.
Just meters from where she stood, Kasumi noticed her Wakizashi standing vertically. She tossed Jade's Bo Staff to the side and hurried to collect her weapon. At the same time, Kitana got back on her feet but did not fond Kasumi, instead, she noticed the Bo Staff had been discarded and the Wakizashi collected. Before she could act on this, a slash across Kitana's waist immediately puts her back on her knees.
She looks forward and notices Kasumi standing dynamically, her Wakizashi stained with blood. She knew it was her but was amazed by the speeds at which she moved, as though they were the speeds of an Elder God's champion. Kitana rose to her feet again, though she kept one hand covering her wound, trying to suppress the pain as to not inhibit her fighting capability. Kasumi turned and saw her opponent's vulnerability. Kitana knew she was in danger, grabbing another weapon of hers.
With Jade's Razor-rang in hand, Kitana tossed the weapon toward Kasumi. The Kunoichi responded in kind by forming a windmill shuriken and tossing it at the Razor-rang. The two sharp-edged weapons collided in the middle, and their clash deflected them in opposite directions. Kitana ran with the opportunity and used her Steel Fans to begin generating wind below Kasumi's feet. Suddenly, the Kunoichi began to feel gravity around her seemingly stop functioning.
And in moments, Kasumi helplessly floated in the air, allowing Kitana the perfect chance to strike. She approached Kasumi, using the fans to kick up wind beneath her feet, now airborne, Kitana closed up the fans, having transformed into stabbing weapons. Although struggling to deal with the wind constantly moving her, Kasumi easily noticed her foe coming to strike her. Recalling her past run-ins with assassins, Kasumi recalled her solution out of that encounter.
On the palm of her right hand, Kasumi began to emit light. She focused intently as the light's intensity increased before she stretched her hand outward, from it, a small sphere of energy launched directly toward Kitana. Making immediate contact with the Edenian, it exploded. Almost immediately, the wind beneath Kasumi's feet subsided and she landed on the ground. She gazed up at the explosion to see her opponent crash onto the ground.
Although it was just a small use of her Ninpo, Kasumi did not use it often. Nevertheless, she readied herself for an attack as Kitana laid on the ground, dazed from the unexpected attack. The Steel Fans resided just meters from her, so she sprung herself back into action in a desperate attempt to recover her weapons. Moments before reaching her weaponry, Kitana was halted as one of Kasumi's kunai hit the ground close to her face.
"Please... don't get back up..." Kasumi gently warned. Seeing that her opponent was persistent, but facing greater odds each time she met the ground. But Kitana's fire had been stoked, she looked at Kasumi, making her a promise. "Your fate rests here." Kitana declared. She summoned her Sai once again, this time throwing it toward her foe. Kasumi looked to put Kitana down before anything could transpire, but Kitana suddenly vanished from sight.
Stopping in her tracks, Kasumi turned around to see Kitana holding her Sai, and already tossing her fans. Employing her acrobatics, Kasumi gracefully spun through the air, narrowly avoiding the fans, though one of the fan's blades struck the cloth that tied Kasumi's hair. As she touched the ground, Kasumi's hair flowed to its proper shoulder length. Kitana, having collected Jade's Bo Staff charged in and struck Kasumi with it, knocking her backward.
The brevity of her vulnerability was enough for Kitana to make another attack. Tossing her Sai, she struck Kasumi on the stomach, which caused the Kunoichi significant pain. But before she could do something about it, Kitana teleported to her weapon, quickly tearing it out of Kasumi's stomach and performed a jumping kick that knocked Kasumi to the ground, close to the Steel Fans. Once more, Kitana tossed her weapon, intending to strike Kasumi.
But this had gone on for long enough, Kasumi teleported, leaving behind flower petals. Kitana's Sai missed its target, causing her to inspect her surroundings. But before Kitana could act, Kasumi swiftly approached Kitana, and swung her Wakizashi, severing both of Kitana's hands at the wrist with a single motion. The Edenian cried out, having been completely maimed. With her opponent at her mercy, Kasumi performed a jumping kick, knocking Kitana into the air.
She once again launched a sphere of energy from her hands, striking Kitana and launching her skyward in the ensuing explosion. As her opponent's body soared into the skies, Kasumi began charging energy into her hands, using both her hands and soon the lightning-like energy of the Torn Sky Blast began surging. The pink energy increased its intensity before Kasumi outstretched her arms, launching the projectile attack to the airborne Kitana.
A far grander explosion lit up the coliseum as the spectators watched on in awe. Kasumi gazed up at the devastation she'd caused, and then she noticed a limb hit the ground, and then a resounding thud for the Edenian's body. Kasumi looked and saw Kitana somehow still alive except she was missing one of her arms. Kitana couldn't muster the strength to do anything. "Please, rest quietly..." Kasumi solemnly commended. She tossed a shuriken, slicing Kitana's throat, ending the Edenian's life.
With her foe fallen, Kasumi began casting Ninpo on her wounds and other minor injuries. After a short while, Kasumi's pain had been mended, all that resided was the dry blood that painted part of her face. Kasumi approached Kitana's body and retrieved the shuriken from the body. Flicking the blood off the weapon, Kasumi put it away. She rested the Wakizashi in its sheath on her back. She composed herself, and used her teleportation one last time, departing the coliseum.
One of the flower petals left behind gracefully flowed in the wind before it descended upon and rested on the Steel Fan, the two remnants of the fight that unfolded.
K.O.!
Conclusion[]
(Cue Purity - Dead or Alive 5)
Boomstick: Now that's a Fatality!
Wiz: In some areas, Kasumi and Kitana were pretty even. Both were comparable to characters that could output or withstand blasts powerful enough to bring down large buildings. And they had comparable inventories, so in those areas, they fought almost equally. Though Kitana did have plenty more experience thanks to living over 10,000 years.
Boomstick: But it isn't a decisive advantage, Kitana has been defeated plenty of times by much younger opponents. While the experience might not have been crucial, Kitana's training was top of the line, so she was constantly putting Kasumi to the test. But Kasumi comes from a whole family of ninja assassins.
Popup: While Test Your Might feats are likely stronger than Kasumi's feats, Test Your Might does not pertain to a character's canonical strength. Even if it had been included, it is unlikely to circumvent any of Kasumi's advantages.
Wiz: So it wouldn't be outside of Kasumi's comfort zone to combat someone experienced in the art of assassination. Even with Kitana's variations and multiple martial arts, she couldn't overwhelm Kasumi, whose battles with Alpha-152 proves she can handle combating opponents with multiple martial arts disciplines.
Boomstick: Plus, there's a big speed gap. While Kitana could technically match Kabal, who moved at almost Mach 3 speeds to parry machine gun fire, Kasumi is comparable to Ryu Hayabusa, who moved at Mach 1015 speeds when he dodged lightning. Even if we lowballed Kasumi to the slowest of Hayabusa's three dodges, that would still put her Mach 145. That's still out of Kitana's league.
Wiz: Even if we removed the lightning dodge feats altogether, Kasumi would still be comparable to Hayabusa dodging automatic fire from aircraft, which is much faster than machine gun fire. What's more, Kasumi had unique abilities which further contributed to her survivability, namely her Ninpo healing.
Popup: Revenant Kitana has far greater odds of victory, as she contended with Fire God Liu Kang. But a Revenant's abilities are amplified when they are resurrected, as a result, it is unlikely Kitana could be considered equal to her Revenant.
Boomstick: Yeah, Kitana didn't have anything like that. Also, Kasumi's advantages meant that her Ninpo stuck around. Which comes in handy for healing a stab wound, or if she wants to finish off her opponent with a powerful Torn Sky Blast.
Wiz: Kitana certainly had the strength and training to keep herself in the fight. She'd make Edenia proud, but she just didn't have enough to overcome the greater speed, versatility, and survivability of the Kunoichi of Destiny.
Boomstick: "Kahn" you believe it, Kitana had been fatally dethroned! What's the matter, Wiz? Not the biggest "fan" of my puns?
Wiz: The winner is Kasumi.
