Born during the time of Hashirama Senju, Kakuzu is was a ninja from Takigakure, the Village Hidden in a Waterfall. When he failed his mission to assassinate the First Hokage, Kazkuzu finds himself arrested by his village's elders. Furious of their treachery, Kakuzu uses the forbidden jutsu Earth Grudge to kill the elders for their hearts and sent became a wandering ninja making money as a bounty hunter. Two generations later, Kakuzu is approached by Pain and joins the Akatsuki on the condition that he can continue to claim bounties and use some of that money to finance the organization. During his early years in the Akatsuki, Kakuzu had four partners that he eventually ended up killing before being partnered with the only man he cannot kill: Hidan.

Kakuzu is a very powerful opponent, his body kept together by a series of black tendrils able to pierce flesh and bone that enable him to take the hearts of his opponents and add them to his body. Kakuzu is also able to use his hearts as weapons, creating masked constructs to fight for him. Should he lose one of his hearts, Kazuku merely absorbs one of his constructs to compensate. Each construct has a different chakra nature: A ape-like construct that uses fire chakra nature, a bull-masked monster that uses lightning bolts, and a griffin-like creature that uses wind-nature. Kakuzu can also absorb his constructs to assume a more powerful form.
