“ | VAE VICTIS! (Woe to the conquered) | „ |
~ Kain |
“ | Once I embraced my powers I realized that Vorador was correct. We are gods - dark gods and it is our duty to thin the herd. | „ |
~ Kain in Blood Omen |
“ | Conscience...? You dare to speak to me of conscience? Only when you have felt the full gravity of choice should you dare question my judgment! Your life's span is a flicker compared to the mass of doubt and regret that I have borne since Mortanius first turned me from the light... To know that the fate of the world hangs dependent on the advisedness of my every deed -- can you even begin to conceive what action you would take, in my position? | „ |
~ Kain in Soul Reaver |
“ | Let’s drop the moral posturing, shall we? We both know there’s no altruism in this pursuit. Your reckless indignation led you here – I counted on it. There’s no shame in it, Raziel – revenge is motivation enough. At least it’s honest. Hate me, but do it honestly | „ |
~ Kain in Soul Reaver 2 |
“ | Given the choice - whether to rule rule a corrupt and failing empire, or to challenge the fates for another throw, a better throw, against destiny - what was a king to do? But, does one truly have a choice? One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate, and thus, defy the tyrannous stars | „ |
~ Kain in Defiance |
“ | I knew what ominous hour this was in Nosgoth's history. For here was the event that had shaped my entire existence... I had cast my fate, refusing the sacrifice, damning the Pillars, and founding my doomed empire upon their ruins. I would raise the Sarafan priests to be my closest lieutenants, and would one day cast the strongest of them, my servant Raziel, into the abyss – dealing one last hand to play against Fate. But in the end, had it made any difference? Had I misread the signs, as Moebius told me? In my arrogance, had I missed my cast at destiny? | „ |
~ Kain in Defiance |
“ | Now,at last, the masks had fallen away. The strings of the puppets had become visible, and the hands of the prime mover exposed. Most ironic of all was the last gift that Raziel had given me, more powerful than the sword that now held his soul, more acute even than the vision his sacrifice had accorded me - the first bitter taste of that terrible illusion: Hope | „ |

History[]
Kain is the eponymous character and main protagonist as well as even the antagonist of the Legacy of Kain franchise. A vampire antihero, Kain was inextricably tangled in plots to control the fate of his world, Nosgoth. The son of an aristocratic family, he lived the life of an ambitious young nobleman, never realizing his undiscovered destiny – to take his rightful place as Balance Guardian, and serve the Pillars of Nosgoth. During one fateful journey, Kain was cruelly assassinated and resurrected from the dead. His quest for vengeance led him on a torturous journey of self-discovery as his curse of vampirism took irrevocable hold on his soul.
Cunning and relentless, Kain battled the oppressive agents of fate that sought to destroy him. For centuries, he ruthlessly pursued a singular ambition: to restore the land of Nosgoth, and return it to vampire rule. Armed with the legendary Soul Reaver blade, and pursued by his fallen creation Raziel, he hoped to reclaim his true role as Scion of Balance from the wreckage of history

Reaver, Emblems and Elements[]
The Reaver, The Soul Reaver and Elements
- As the Reaver, the sword has the ability to absorb the Blood from the enemies that strikes/cut.[1][2]
- As the Reaver uses Emblem fragments and, as the Soul Reaver can absorb temporarily different elements.
- In Soul Reaver 2, can Absorb temporarily the Elements of at least Darkness[3], Light[4], Air[5] and Fire[6], from different temples.[7]
- In Legacy of Kain Defiance, the Soul Reaver can also absorb the souls of the Original Guardians of the Pillars of Nosgoth, being able to switch permanently between the Elements of: Darkness[8], Light[9], Fire[10], Air[11], Water[12], Earth[13] and Spirit.[14]
- Dark Reaver: The blows of this sword create "mini Shades" (shadows) that chase and hit nearby enemies. It also allows the user to become invisible, and obscure orbs of light.[15][16]
- Light Reaver: Its blows blind enemies momentarily, and can make an explosion of light that blinds all enemies in the area for a longer period of time.[17][18]
- Fire Reaver: His blows burn enemies, and is able to make an blast of fire.[19][18]
- Air Reaver: Like his soul Reaver 2 version, can activate air platforms that lift Raziel, his blows generate small whirlwinds that spin enemies, and can make a tornado that sends enemies flying.[20][18]
- Water Reaver: His hits freeze enemies, and he can make an ice explosion in an area that freezes all nearby enemies. Is able to freeze waterfalls quickly.[21][22]
- Earth Reaver: The damage of his blows is reflected on nearby enemies, is capable of causing an earthquake that knocks out all nearby people, increases the user's weight, allowing him to walk underwater, and make earth platforms in specific places.[23][22]
- Spirit Reaver: Besides being able to purify, this is the only elemental Reaver that exists in both the spectral and material planes. It has no other special characteristic, apart from being much more powerful than the other Soul Reavers (around 8 times more powerful), thanks to the souls of the Balance Guardians.[24][22]
- NOTE: Although the Soul Reaver has the ability to absorb and use elements, Kain's never use them (likely not even know that can use them), he only uses the Balance Emblem
- After Absorbing Raziel, the Reaver became the Soul Reaver capable of absorbing souls.[25]
- The Sword "Feed on the Souls of any creature that strikes" ignoring durability by directly attacking the Soul.[26]
- The Sword is able to remove and absorb the Soul of creatures when this are impaled. When Killing a enemy the sword would automatically absorb his soul, the Soul Reaver also becomes more powerful with each strike it gives (even by "striking" the air), and by absorbing the entire soul of a enemy the soul Reaver would greatly increase his power.[27][28][29][30]
- Draws energy from the Pillars of Nosgoth making it indestructible, save for the striking another Soul Reaver (a Paradox). This applies to the normal Reaver and the Soul Reaver[31][32][33]
- Can slay and wound any type of beings including Shades (creatures that are unharmed by regular physical attacks).[34] As the Soul Reaver is able to harm and even kill the Elder God[35] who is a Multi-Dimensional creature that exists in both the Material and Spectral realms simultaneously. (Although in this case, is a combination of the Soul Reaver and Kain being the Scion of Balance that allows harm the Elder God)
- Can Project energy bolts, which were calculated to have a force of over 1,000,000 Newtons.[36]
Balance Emblem fragments (only as the Reaver)
An artifact of 5 fragment created by the Ancient Vampires for the Balance Guardian/Scion of Balance and for the Reaver, with each fragment representing a Pillar/Principle. Some of these powers being the same powers Kain had in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (although weaker), this will be important for later on..[37][38][39]
- Balance Emblem (Balance Pillar): Increase the Reaver's power allowing it to Dispel Magical Barriers and make an Energy Blast.[40][41]
- Flame Emblem (Conflict Pillar): Allows Kain to control fire and turn his enemies against each other.[42][43]
- Dimension Emblem (Dimension Pillar): Reflects damage to nearby enemies and allows Teleportation.[44][43]
- Lighting Emblem (Energy Pillar): Allows Kain to control lighting, creating a chain of Lightning that attack through enemies, as well as summon Lightning from the sky.[45][43]
- Time Emblem (Time Pillar): His strikes slow downs enemies and can Slow time to a crawl leaving Kain unaffected.[46][43]
Gear and Armor[]
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
Iron Armor
- An Armor created by the Necromancers Mortanius with hell-fire, granting Kain a enhanced protection to physical damage and Resistance against fire.[47][48]
Bone Armor
Mask of Disguise
Chaos Armor
Flesh Armor
- This armor drains the Blood of the creature that Kain cuts, feeding and healing him automatically.[55][56]
Wraith Armor
- This armor exists partially in the material/human realms, changing constantly between tangible and ethereal state. In gameplay this armor reduces by half the damage that kain's suffered, by also taking Kain's magical energy instead, in the same proportion. In Lore however it would have to give a limited intangibility to Kain, since the armor is constantly changing between physical and intangible state (Kain himself looks transparent, and has a violet aura around him, just like the ghosts in the game, which are obviously intangible).[57][58]
Iron Sword
- A high quality sword, it was the sword with which Kain was killed, it is sharp enough to pierce from side to side the iron breastplate and Chainmail of Kain when he was human.[59][60]
Spiked Mace
- A Mace, which Kain uses to destroy obstacles, stuns enemies in combat, rendering them defenseless.[61][62]
The Axes
- A pair of axes called Havoc and Malice, Kain uses them to cut trees and make a spinning attack that runs multiple enemies simultaneously. When using them Kain cannot perform magic.[63][64]
Flame Sword
- A sword that when struck catches fire, powerful enough to reduce multiple humans to ashes with a single strike.[65][66]
Flay
- Flay artefacts were projectiles that homed in on an enemy, then ripped the flesh from its bones.[67][68]
Implode
- If these projectiles struck an enemy, their body rapidly compressed. The remains exploded when the internal pressure became too great to be contained.[69][70]
Font of Putrescence
- These artefacts were homing projectiles that caused enemies to decompose upon contact. The pool left by their dissolved bodies acted as a trap, promising the same fate to anyone that stood in it.[71][72]
Pentaliche of Tarot
- Tarot randomly picked how Kain's enemies would die. There were five different outcomes that could be dealt, and it killed all assailants who were in close proximity to Kain. From observation, it appeared that the five outcomes were as follows:[73][74]
- Flay.
- Dissolve (Font of Putrescence).
- Implode.
- Explode into lots of tiny bits (like Flay, but with no skeleton left).
- Exploding dismemberment (bigger bits left than 4, like when the Soul Reaver was used).
Anti-Toxin
- If Kain became poisoned, Anti-Toxin was the cure. These artefacts were particularly useful around Dark Eden, where Kain was frequently poisoned by the mutant inhabitants.[75][76]
Energy Bank
- These artefacts filled Kain's magic reserves for a while, but when their effect faded, Kain was left with no magical energy at all. Despite this disadvantage, the Energy Banks were valuable for use with the Soul Reaver. They ensured Kain had the magical energy needed for the sword to show its full potential.[77][78]
Heart of Darkness
- The Heart of Darkness cards are representations of the relic, (from the true heart of Janos Audron), these cards have the same power as the original heart "restore vampiric unlife", the hearts serve as a resurrection for Kain, if he is killed, he instantly resurrects, giving him enough "life" to be able to fight, Kain can also use the hearts to heal himself and recover all his energy.[79][80][81]
Powers and Abilities[]
Natural Abilities/Characteristics[]
- Weapon Mastery: Kain has used different types of weapons throughout his life, although he specializes in swords. Kain as a human was a nobleman i.e. a knight, therefore he had a formal training in the use of the sword. In Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, he uses one-handed swords, maces, axes (one in each hand) and the Soul Reaver which is a two-handed sword. In Blood Omen 2 he uses a variety of weapons, which includes broadswords, spiked clubs, cutlasses, daggers, double-bladed swords, great-axes, longswords, scepters, scimitars and hand axes. And it is capable of defeating highly trained soldiers, such as the Sarafan. After that Kain used only the Soul Reaver for more than a thousand years, having a great experience with it, and developing his own sword fighting moves.
- Stealth Mastery: Although Kain is arrogant, in all his versions, Kain uses Stealth, even though it is not necessary for him. In Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Kain uses an Illusion on himself and makes himself look like a human to infiltrate the highly protected city of Willendorf.[82] In Blood Omen 2, Kain uses his mist form to camouflage himself with the environment, becoming almost invisible and moving stealthily to kill enemies from behind,[83] or he also uses stealth in his normal form.[84]Even as an Elder, despite being much more powerful than in his young, he also uses stealth to infiltrate the Sarafan fortress, or to interrogate enemies.[85]
- Great strategist/tactician: Kain is a great strategist, either in single combat or in a war, in combat he is able to defeat enemies while being at a disadvantage by using his environment to protect or damage them. He is described as a "Cunning strategist" or a "damn good strategist/tactician", but having time to improve even more, he was able to conquer the entire world of Nosgoth in only 100 years, with his 6 sons: Raziel, Turel, Dumah, Rahab, Zephon and Melchiah, with each son creating his own clan of vampires. Being an army of weak vampires (all the vampires had been recently created, so they were "Fledgling"), and the humans far outnumbered them (each clan had "hundreds of vampires" with the Melchiahim clan outnumbering the Turelim by 3 to 1, so at most Kain would have an army of around 2000 to 3000 vampires).[86][87][88][89]
Vampires Natural Abilities/Characteristics[]
- Superhuman Physical Characteristics: As a vampire, Kain is stronger, faster,[90] more resilient[91], and agile[92] than a normal human, although how much stronger/faster, etc is compared to a human, varies between his age. It is worth mentioning that even the weakest vampires shown in the series (the ones from Blood Omen 2), are shown that can jump great distances (several meters both horizontally and vertically).[93]
- Immortality, Regeneration and Healing: Vampires where cursed with Immortality by the Hylden, being unable to dio of old age[94] Vampires can regenerate wounds virtually instantly as "Physical wounds are fleeting - a vampire's immortal flesh begins to close as soon as it is cleaved."[95] Kain and his descendants, have the ability to "Heal over time"[96], just waiting a few seconds[97] or minutes, Kain would recover all of his health.[98][99]
- Dark Gifts and Absorbing Veins (Power Absorption): Vampires in Legacy of Kain have something which is called "Dark Gifts", this are the "supernatural abilities" of the vampire, and each vampire has a unique Dark Gift. When Kain (or other vampire) drinks the "Life-Force" of a vampire and "absorbs their veins" he gains the "Dark Gift" (special power) of the vampire.[100][101]
- Vampire Lore: Kain as all vampires, gradually becomes stronger and "Harder to Kill" by drinking Blood, increasing both strength and durability. And of course he also heals from drinking Blood.[102][103]
- Floating: Vampires have the ability to "Float", which allows Kain to slow down the speed of his fall. This allows Kain to silently land near enemies and strike undetected. The ability can also be used to extend the range of Kain's jump.[104][105]
- Limited Telekineis: Kain as all vampires has the ability to use telekinesis and move objects at close range "through sheer will alone", being able to do things like attract objects to their hands, or even remove the Blood from still (Sleep, Stunned, Chained) enemies telekinetically at distance.[106][107]
- Whisper: "Whisper" is the ability that vampires have to communicate with each other "over great distances" telepathically, although they aren't able to read the mind of the vampire at who is talking.[108] When more powerful and Evolved the vampires is, the more vampires he can talk simultaneously.[109]
- Enhanced Senses: Vampires posses enhanced Senses, specifically the sense of Smell and Hearing. As Kain was able to smell Blood and Hear voices from at least hundreds of meters, likely Kilometers.[110] This is also supported by the weakness of vampires to sound, as they are weak to a specific sound frequency that doesn't affect humans.[111]
- Claws and Fangs: Vampires have "Natural Weapons" their claws, they start with small claws (acting more like long fingernails), When a vampire Evolve, they Claws fusions with the rest of the fingers, becoming bigger, more harder and sharp, now instead of 5 fingers, they have 3 long, thick and sharped Finger-Claws.[112][113][114] The small Claw's are shown to easily cut through thick steel armors[115] and the Evolves claws, are described to being able to "Tear many enemies apart".[116]
- Evolution: All Vampires evolve over time, but due the corruption on Kain's soul (caused at his birth by the Mind Guardian Nupaptor), Kain and his descendents, evolve by entering in a "State of Change", from time to time, of which they emerge "transformed", having gained a new "Gift" (power/ability/characteristics), and emerge more powerful, faster and resilient that before, along with other things, like Immunity to sunlight. Although this corruption would cause that his sons would also devolve into beast.[117][118][119][120]
Fledgling Kain (Blood Omen Legacy of Kain Powers/Abilities)[]
- Mist Form: In this form Kain become into Mist, making himself invulnerable to physical attacks, this form also allows him to move faster than normal, being unharmed by water and pass through grates, Barrs or cracks in walls. This version of Mist Form is still vulnerable to magical attacks and consumes magical energy.[121][122][123]
- Wolf Form: Kain transform Into a Black big wolf, which allows him to move faster than normal, and attack with his claws. The Wolf form becomes much more powerful during the Full Moon.[121] [124][125]
- Bat Form: With this form Kain transforms into a swarm of bats, this to flight and travel quickly through the sky.[126] [127][128] As an Elder, Kain uses this form, as "regeneration", if Kain is greatly injured (or something that would be fatal normally to him), he would simply burst into bats and reform in a safe place.[98]
- Beguile: Beguile affects the perception of the people when look at Kain, seeing him as a noble human, instead of a vampire, and now is able to attack, while using this ability.[129][82]
- Light: Creates a ball of light to illuminate dark areas.[130][131]
- Lightning: Kain Summons Lightning from the sky that is powerful enough to disintegrate enemies, including humans wearing a full body metal armor.[132][133]
- Energy Bolt: Fires a bolt of magic in straight line that is powerful enough to blow humans to pieces.[134][135]
- Repel: Creates a force-field that protects Kain's entire body (except the area under the feet), making him temporary Invulnerability and reflects all magical spells and projectile back at opponent. He is able to attack normally and even use other magic while repel is active.[136][137]
- Inspire Hate: Turns enemies onto one another, in the area around Kain, this power work every creature including humans, animals, undead, demons or even intangible things like ghost, shadows and on things that doesn't have emotions like statues animated by magic. While this power is active enemies would ignore Kain (even if he attacks them), and would only attack him if there are no enemies In the area.[138][139]
- Stun: Cast a homing projectile that on impact would paralysis enemies in a catatonic state leaving them helpless.[140][141]
- Slow Time: Slows down time for a while leaving Kain unaffected. This spell reduces enemies speed by 1/4th of his normal speed.[142][143][144]
- NOTE: While Slow Time is used as an object in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Kain himself described this ability as his own magic, so is likely that slow time being a object is simple game Mechanic to balance the ability.
- Spirit Death: With this spell, Kain cast a projectile that on impact removes the soul of the creature, killing it.[145][146]
- Control Mind & Spirit Wrack: With this Spell Kain can control the body of a creature at will, by removing the creature's soul from his body, and replacing it with his own, while his body is protected by Repel. Control Mind only work on humans,[147][148] while Spirit Wrack is an improved version, which works on any creatures from the game, including humans, Animals, Undead, Animated dolls, Demons to even ghost.[149][150]
- Incapacitate: Freezes enemies in time leaving them helpless.[151][152]
- Blood Gout: With this Kain fire his blood into his enemies so he can drain them via blood transfusion.[153][154]
- Blood Shower: Can drain the blood of all creatures in the area, killing them.[155][156]
- Mind Reading: Kain shown the ability to see the memories of a corpse by drinking his Blood.[159]
- Non-Physical Interaction: Kain is shown being able to destroy intangible things like Ghost or even shadows.[160]
- Resistances to:
- Very limited resistance to Fire, and Heat resistance: Kain in Blood Omen 1, is able to withstand a literal rain of fire on himself, and although this causes him great pain, he is not injured. He also is able to be surrounded by lava almost touching it, and is not hurt/affected, he is only hurt if he touches the lava directly.[161]
- Immunity to rain and snow: In Blood Omen 1, Kain drank from several magic Blood Fountain, one of which gave him immunity to rain, and another gave him immunity to snow, and now he is not injured by either of these.[162] Although he is still injured by water, (other than rain).
- High resistance/immunity to Transmutation and Life Manipulation & Corruption: In Blood Omen 1, Kain was unaffected by the dome of Energy of Dark Eden: in this game 3 different Guardians of the Circle of Nine: DeJoule, the Energist (Guardian of Energy), Bane the Druid (Guardian of Nature), and Anacrothe the Alchemist (Guardian of the States), joined their powers, creating a Dome of Energy the size of a mountain, which would grow to consume the entire world, although it is unknown how long it would take. The dome had several effects that were a combination of the guardians' powers: The Dome "Absorbed and recreated, consuming life, leaving behind only a twisted parody". Warping any creature that comes in contact with the dome, transforming them into mutants, with humans being deformed into slug-like creatures that spit poison, humanoid creatures that shot the protrusions of their body in all directions, or humans transformed into human-wolf type creatures that had very long arms and could stand on two legs. As well as animals that were enlarged in size and had a huge amount of teeth, which they used to attack, the blood of all these creatures was literally poison. All this is clearly done with the power of Bane, who can modify life (plants, creatures, etc.) and warp them at will. The dome also "Shape the land" transforming the ground from normal earth and grass, into a volcanic ground, with rivers of lava, the dome even warped the weather, transforming the rain water into fire, being now a literal rain of fire. This is obviously because of Anacrothe, whose powers as the Guardian of the States, allows him to warp the states of matter, transforming ordinary earth into lava, and water into fire. DeJoule being the one who created the Energy dome, and surely the one who was making it bigger and bigger.[163]
- High Acid Resistance: Kain is completely unharmed by Font of Putrescence, which is an acid powerful enough to melt soldiers wearing armor, practically instantly. And as Kain himself says "Should this object strike an enemy, rot and decay would instantly eat their flesh, and leave only a pool of blood and tissue. For a time after, the toxins are still active, and therefore lethal to the touch." And despite the fact that even the toxins are still active after using them on someone (also melting people who walk over them), Kain is not hurt in the slightest.[72]
- Resistance to Soul Absorption: Kain was able to resist several hits from the Soul Reaver,[164] which "Feed on the Souls of any creature that strikes".[26] This is because he is a Balance Guardian and Being created with the Heart of Darkness.[165]
Young Kain (Blood Omen 2 Powers/Abilities)[]
Due to several events, a future version of Kain changed history, affecting his past. In this new timeline 200 years after Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, a young Kain faces a mortal combat against General Hylden, also known as the Sarafan Lord, there he is attacked with "Glyph Magic", which is "Deadly to vampires" however Kain was able to survive, but was left in a coma for 200 years, this caused him to weaken greatly, and also he did not have access to most of his old powers.[166] However, as mentioned above, vampires can absorb the special abilities of other vampires (Dark Gifts) by killing them, and Kain throughout the game kills and absorbs the abilities of several vampires:
- Mist Form: This is one of the few powers he still retains, while weakned. In this game Kain uses his mist form as camouflage, transforming into mist when there is another mist around, becoming "Nearly Invisible", and attacking enemies stealthily from behind.[83][167]
- Fury: Another of the powers that Kain retains (probably having obtained it in the 200 years since the end of Blood Omen 1). With this ability Kain channels his rage into his fist, to deliver a more powerful blow than normal, either with his claws or with weapons.[168][91]
- Jump: This ability he obtained by killing the vampire Faustus, this gives him an increased jumping ability that allows him to jump great distances.[169]
- Charm: This ability was obtained by killing the vampire Marcus. It allows him to control Weak-minded humans at will.[170]
- Berserk: This is obtained from the vampire Sebastian. This is described as "A speed attack", it increases Kain's speed when attacking, moving so fast that it creates afterimages.[171]
- Power Absorption and Telekinesis: Kain besides being able to absorb the powers of other vampires he kills, has the ability to absorb the powers of other creatures by drinking their blood, this was shown when he drank the blood of the Seer while alive, who is a Hylden (while vampires have their "Life-Force" absorbed when they are dead), increasing his Telekinetic abilities, allowing him to move objects at a great distance, and launch a TK Blast, which allows to knock down enemies.[172][173]
- Immolate: Kain's most powerful ability in this game, was obtained by killing the vampire Magnus. With this Kain creates a red ring around the enemy, and raises it in the air, and then set it on fire, killing it. This ability used by Magnus proved to be able to destroy stone and metal, including large stone statues, and although Kain is probably weaker, he should be able to do something similar.[174]
- Passively use of Beguile: In Blood Omen 2: Kain has the ability to "disguise his presence", and throughout Blood Omen 2, humans speak to Kain as if he were a normal human. The official game guide confirms that Kain is "disguised as a noble", which means that he is passively using the Beguile spell.[175][176]
- Resistance to Mind Control: Kain was able to effortlessly resist the attempt of mind control of the vampire Marcus, who is able to control at least 6 people simultaneously.[177]
- Willpower: Kain was able to guide his vampire evolution through "Sheer will", being the only vampire who was able to do this.[178][179][180][181]
Elder Kain powers/Abilities (Soul Reaver 1 &2 and LOK Defiance)[]
Although Elder Kain is thought to not use almost any of the powers he had in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Blood Omen 2, because he lost them (due to what happened in Blood Omen 2), it has been confirmed that Kain still possesses them, he just chooses not to use them due to a combination of not needing them due to becoming too powerful, having the Soul Reaver, and arrogance. Also in Blood Omen 2 itself, the vampire Umah and developers, say that the reason why Kain does not have access to his old powers is because he is weakened, logically by recovering his power, he should also recover his abilities, this is supported not only in the statements previously shown, but as an Elder, he uses powers that he did not show in Blood Omen 2, but had in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, such as Bat Form or Blood Shower, which would confirm that he recovered his powers. It has also been said that Kain "discarded certain abilities he deemed unnecessary", but it is completely unknown what these abilities are, so it is best to assume that he has them all, otherwise it is complete speculation.[182][183][184][185][186][187] It has also been confirmed that Kain's abilities "evolved", along with him, this is demonstrated in Legacy of Kain Defiance, with older abilities being much better than before.[188]
- Enhanced Mist Form: In the more than 1600 years since Blood Omen 2, the Mist Form of Kain's form evolved, not only is he now able to activate or deactivate it instantly with a thought, being now a passive ability (it does not consume magical energy), using it in combat to pass through attacks, but it is also intangible even against Raziel's Wraith Blade/Soul Reaver, which is not only a "Magical Artifact", but it is also capable of damaging other elemental intangible beings such as the Shades, and that is stated to directly attack the soul. That is to say, Kain's Mist Form lost its weakness to magic, and is intangible to attacks capable of damaging other intangible beings, and even against things that affect the Soul.[189]
- Enhanced Telekinesis: Due to having had hundreds of years to improve his Telekinetic powers, Kain has them much more developed than before, being able to do the following things:
- He is able to lift humans into the air, and move them in the air in all directions, he commonly throws them against objects like spikes, cliffs or against walls, this he can do it over long distances, without looking, and even in mid-air. His Telekineis is just as powerful as Wraith Raziel's (after absorbing Turel's soul), being that Raziel is able to lift "giant-sized humans", incredibly tall and muscular, and several heads taller than him (Almost twice as taller than Raziel, that has a height of 6.4 ft). He is able to apply force to specific areas of the body, for example he was able to hang the Time Guardian Moebius, only by "slightly flexing his hand" (as he was asking information), and he is able to lift people in the air and remove their blood from their body with such force that it breaks their chest, including their armor.[190]
- Is able to manipulate objects in different ways, for example he can activate switches from a distance, remove his enemies' weapons from their hands (or attract weapons to his hand), knock down multiple large stone objects, including: A stone Pillar taller than himself, Knock down a Stone Pillar multiple times his size with enough force to shatter a stone floor, or a massive granite pillar with enough force to nearly topple another one, move a small gargoyle statue, o move a over 7 ft stone statue of the vampire Vorador.[191]
- His Telekinesis is powerful enough to destroy stone, being able to shatter (multiple times) from human-sized stone, to large stalagmites several times taller than him and thicker.[192]
- Is capable of cast Telekinetic projectiles, these are just as powerful as Raziel's, which can generate a force of 1059624 Newton.[193]
- Can create Telekinetic explosions, creating small ones to repel objects, or more powerful ones to send enemies flying.[194]
- With the ability "Kinetic Shackles", he is able to create "Bonds of force", which leaves enemies suspended in the air for 7 seconds, while he can fight normally and even use his other Telekinetic abilities, he can also use this ability with several enemies simultaneously.[195]
- Kain not only uses the Telekineis against random enemies, but also in 1 vs 1 combats with people as powerful as him, as seen in his combat against Wraith Raziel, in which he lifts him in the air to hit him against the walls, or brings him closer to hit him with blows and also throws TK Blast at him.[196]
- Lightning Bolts: Kain can Project Lightning bolts from his hands, either short range or long range Lightning. This Lightning is powerful enough to one-shoot Wraith Raziel at the beginning of Soul Reaver 1.[197] and Wraith Raziel in this version is unharmed by attacks capable of shatter stone.[198]
- Teleportation: Kain is able to teleport, either by joining his hands together or simply by thought without moving.[199] It seems to have a limited range, since Kain does not use it to move long distances (using his Bat Form for those cases).
- Natural Armor: Due to the evolutions, Kain's skin hardened, creating a natural armor, which not only protects him from weapon damage (since as a vampire he was weak to this type of attacks), but also makes him completely immune to sunlight (which when he was young weakened him).[200][178][201][202] This Natural Armor is strong enough that a furious Wraith Raziel in his Soul Reaver 1/2 version, isn't even able to scratch Kain's skin/armor,[203] being that Raziel can effortlessly sink his caws in into massive stone and Iron metal cubes[204](Raziel Claws were calculated to be around 8 inches, so that's the how much stone/metal Raziel can effortlessly pierce with his claws)
- This is ignoring scale/lore, which makes Raziel much more powerful.
- Resurrection, Corruption & Power Bestowal: Kain being created with Necromancy, cannot create vampires from living humans, however he is able to resurrect dead humans and transform them into vampires, by giving them a small portion of his soul, with this, the fragment of Kain's soul draws the soul of the corpse to his body, and transforms it into a vampire. Kain created 6 vampire children in the following order: Raziel, Turel, Dumah, Rahab, Zephon and finally Melchiah. To each created son he gave a smaller portion of his soul, and depending on the size of the soul fragment, his sons were more or less powerful (the bigger the more powerful), besides creating them with a specific ability/characteristic to each one.[205][206][207][208][209][210]
- Possibly Illusion Creation and Shapeshifting: The Razielm clan inherited the magical abilities to "Charm" (Control Minds), create Illusions and alter their appearance, as well as other unknown magic. These abilities came from Raziel, who in turn obtained these abilities from Kain, by being created with a portion of his soul, so Kain should also have these abilities. [211]
- Evolved Mind (Resistance to Madness and Enhance cognitive capabilities): As a Vampire one's mind evolved to limits beyond that of humans, which allowed him to be able to process and understand the Time-Stream (which allowed him to see the future) when he saw it in the Chronoplast, in almost a century. The Time-Stream consists of "The various weavings of time, wrapping, unfolding and refolding", and it has been confirmed that a normal person would go crazy when seeing it. The amount of information Kain processes varies depending on the statement, there are already statements that Kain saw Infinite time paths, processing infinite possibilities (both by Kain himself and by a developer), although there are also statements by the same developer saying that the Chronoplast/Time-Stream only shows you "a LOT of data" but not infinite. So Kain's cognitive abilities are at least far superior to those of a normal human, or Infinite if we go to the best version of the feat.[212][213][214][215][216]
Scion of Balance powers[]
At the end of the last game (Legacy of Kain Defiance), Kain was purified with the Spirit Reaver,[217][218][219][220], which is the Soul Reaver united with the Souls of all the Balance Guardians that existed before Kain, And is made explicitly to purify the Scion of Balance (Kain).[221] This not only gave him a massive increase in power, but also allowed him to use all the abilities of the Guardians of the Pillars of Nosgoth, the "Circle of Nine", but "though a lesser extent compared to a pure Guardian".[222]
Before talking about the powers of the Circle of Nine, Kain himself has his own unique abilities as the Scion of Balance:
- Scion of Balance Immortality: As the Scion of Balance, Kain can only be killed by the Soul Reaver, this because he is connected to both the Pillars of Nosgoth, and the Soul Reaver itself, which is the "Key" to the Pillars. This has been confirmed both by Kain himself and developers multiple times, specifically by Daniel Cabuco no less than 8 Times:[223][224][225][226][227][228][229][35][230]
- Kain can be injured in any way or even incapacitated, but not killed, and when he suffers too much damage, he will simply burst into a flock of bats and reform elsewhere.[98][231] Other feats of his immortality include:
- Can Survive having his heart ripped out and live normally without It. This due to "His nature as the Scion of Balance" [232]
- Was able to Survive an attack with Glyph Magic, which is "Deadly to vampires" (although he was in a coma for 200 years)[233]
- it has been confirmed that things like fire (which could normally reduce him to ashes) or water (which is like acid), cannot kill him either. [230]
Important things to note about his immortality: Kain retains his immortality even in places where the Pillars of Nosgoth do not exist, as he was able to survive without his heart in the Demon Dimension, being the Scion of Balance, and this Dimension is described as "Another Plane of existence"[234] by the Vampire Janos Audron, and is described as a place "outside the bounds of normal reality" [235] by the official Legacy of Kain Defiance guide. Although it is not known for sure what happens if Kain is attacked and completely destroyed in bat Form (destroying all the bats, it is not even known if that is possible), but he seems to be invulnerable in that form, since in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain; Kain is able to receive a blast of fire at point blank range and is thrown dozens of meters backwards, but is not damaged in the least,[236] and as a vampire Kain is weak against fire, at least this version.[237] So is likely Kain in Bat Form cannot be destroyed. Another thing is that the reason why the Soul Reaver can kill Kain is not because it can remove/absorb souls, but because of its connection to the Pillars/Soul Reaver, attacks/magic that affect the soul cannot kill Kain either. To give further support to this the Elder God the major antagonist of the series (a Multi-Dimensional being that exists in both the Material Realm and the Spectral Realm, the realm of the living and the realm of the dead respectively),[238] confirmed twice that he is not able to kill Kain, saying (after being discovered by Kain), that he was going to bury him for all eternity "beneath a mountain of rubble",[239] confirming that he would never be able to kill him, which would make no sense if he could destroy his physical body (or if by destroying his physical body, Kain would die), since when a creature dies in the material realm, his soul moves practically instantly to the spectral realm,[240] where the Elder God has an army of creatures called Archons [241] which have shown themselves capable of devouring entire souls,[242] however by the Elder God's own words, he "does not have the means to kill Kain", which confirms that these creatures capable of devouring souls cannot kill him. All this would mean two things:
1) In Bat Form he is invulnerable and therefore cannot be killed (never entering the Spectral Realm).
2) He is able to regenerate a body, even if it is completely destroyed (also not going to the Spectral Realm, as he would not die even with his body completely destroyed).
For both cases there is evidence, in the Invulnerability of his Bat Form, since he is not damaged by fire, for which Kain is weak. And for the part of regenerating a body completely, Mortanius Guardian of Death, is able to "Resurrect", when his physical body is completely destroyed, he simply creates a new one in another place after a few seconds.[243] Kain as Scion of Balance has an Immortality, superior to Mortanius (Kain as Scion of Balance is bound to all Pillars and the Soul Reaver, while Mortanius is only bound to the Pillar of Death) although in Kain's case it would not be a "resurrection", since his immortality is explicitly "cannot be killed" rather than resurrection.
- World/Universal Balance: Kain as the Scion of Balance "Balances the entire world/universe and therefore is able to attack/hurt the Elder God"[244]. It is not 100% certain whether this is an increase in power, a special ability or both, although is likely that is both a special ability and an increase on power. Because the Soul Reaver being purified by the souls of the Balance Guardians increased its power, this is confirmed both by Gameplay,[245]The Official Guide[246] and the game's own script.[247] The sword was made explicitly to purify Kain, so it would not make sense that the souls increase the Soul Reaver's power, but not Kain's own, something confirmed by developers, as Raziel Purified Kain "With the combined power of the Balance Guardians",[248] so there is confirmation that he in fact absorbed their power. And Daniel confirms that when Kain was purified by the souls of the Balance Guardians, they "elevated" him, from a normal Balance Guardian to be the Scion of Balance,[249] or the other statement that the Scion of Balance "Balances on a greater scale", compared to the other Balance Guardians, that I show earlier. Indicating that he is on a higher scale than all the other characters. There is also the matter of the Elder God, that as I shown above he is a Multi-Dimensional being, existing in both the material and spectral realm, and is normally invulnerable to conventional damage, when Raziel attacks the Elder God's tentacles on the material plane, Raziel is able to move them, but the Elder God makes no noise, no blood comes out. When Raziel attacks the Elder God with the Spirit Reaver in the Spectral realm, it simply passes through him, and says even though the sword is "Endowed" to hurt him, because it is a Wraith Blade it cannot touch him, even though that sword is capable of damaging "spectres" in the spectral realm.[250] However after being purified, Kain is able to harm him, telling the Elder God: "for you would not fear us unless WE could truly do you harm"[251] talking about himself, as well as the Soul Reaver, this is confirmed by Daniel Cabuco, saying that the Soul Reaver is able to kill the Eider God.[252] So in summary, Kain received the combined souls of all the Balance Guardians that ever existed, and this gave him the power/ability to affect the entire world/universe and therefore is able to harm the Elder God.
- Purification: Kain as Scion of Balance can purify other beings. I don't count the ability to "create or destroy Guardians",[253] since it is very ambiguous, it is not known if it means that Kain can choose to give the power of a pillar to a specific person or something else.
- Enhanced Senses: Upon being purified, Kain had the "Purified Sight", allowing him to see the Elder God, who is normally invisible and can only be seen by someone purified.[254]
- Passive Reality Warping and Resistance to Fate Manipulation, Retrocognition, Precognition and Clairvoyance: Kain was purified with a variant of the Soul Reaver inside his body, he also uses the Soul Reaver blade, by joining two versions of the same Soul Reaver, it creates a Time-Paradox powerful enough for "Warp and Bend Reality", allowing "Derail History", which is normally impossible.[255][256] [257][258][259][260] Because Raziel is a Walking-Paradox, he has Free will, the Elder God and Moebius (Guardian of Time) cannot see Raziel in the Time-Stream, they can only see what possible paths he may take in the relatively distant future.[261][262][263] It should be clarified that the Time-Stream allows the Elder God and Moebius to see literally whatever they want in the past, present and future, even other "paths" or possibilities in that timeline.[264] [265][266][267][268]Kain now also possessing free will, by having two Soul Reavers (The Spirit Reaver inside his body and the physical Soul Reaver Blade) and being a constant Paradox, like Wraith Raziel, should also be the same, being untraceable by the Time-Stream.
Circle of Nine Powers/Abilities
A little of context about the circle of Nine and the Pillars of Nosgoth:
"The Pillars
Reaching infinitely into the sky and deep into the earth, the Pillars are a manifestation of the mysterious power that preserves and gives life to the land. The nine ancient Pillars represent the principles of Mind, Dimension, Conflict, Nature, Energy, Time, States, Death, and - at the center, binding them all together - Balance.
The Pillars have stood like silent sentinels over Nosgoth since before the dawn of recorded history, and have perpetually been represented by an oligarchy of sorcerer-guardians known as the Circle of Nine.
Each Guardian is marked from birth, chosen and summoned by the Pillar he is destined to serve for his lifetime. In return, the Guardians are granted longevity and extraordinary powers. The death of a Circle member is inevitably followed by the birth of a successor, whom it is the responsibility of the remaining Guardians to seek out and apprentice into the Circle."[269]
The Guardians powers (and therefore Kain's) these are the following (although Kain can use them "though a lesser extent compared to a pure Guardian", i.e. less powerful than the Guardian of his respective Pillar. Unfortunately it is not known how much weaker Kain's powers are compared to those of a pure Pillar guardian, for example compared to the Guardian of Time, nor how this affects abilities that do not have a "scale" so to speak, such as moving between dimensions).
Something important to say is that the Circle Nine have various statements as well as feats that they can affect the entire world (Nosgoth), with their powers,[270][271][272] not only the guardians as a whole, but individual guardians as will be seen below. Of course Kain cannot use the powers on the same scale as them, but even if it were a small fraction of that, it would still be a fairly large scale by which he can use his powers.
The Guardian of the Mind Powers[]
Descrption: The Mind guardian was charged with reigning over the limitless power of thought, consciousness, and emotion.[273] Another of the Guardians of the Mind (Nupraptor the Mentalist), was described as having "Tricks of the mind, telepathy and telekinesis".[274]
- Telepathy/Empathy/Mind Manipulation: As the Guardians of the Mind are "wizards of phenomenal mental and psychic ability", they are "Hypersensitive to emotions and thoughts" of other creatures, they are able to read the thoughts and feel the emotions of the people around them, it is worth mentioning that this ability is passive, as Nupraptor became unstable due to overexposure to other people's thoughts/emotions,[275] so it is not something they can "deactivate" at will, i.e. is a passive ability. Of course they can also speak with their minds, and are able to sense the presence of the creatures around them: Nupraptor was able to sense and speak to Kain as soon as he entered his lair, it is worth mentioning that Nupraptor is both blind and mute due to sewing his mouth and eyes shut, so this was done with Telepathy.[276] As they "Reging over the power of thoughts, consciousness and emotion", they can not only sense the emotions/thoughts, they can also manipulate them. An example of this is when Nupraptor upon discovering that his wife Ariel was murdered, sent a physic/Telepathic attack all across Nosgoth, sending "waves of hate", infecting all the the guardians with his madness, including baby Kain.[275] [277][278][279]This also includes the Conflict Guardian, Malek who at the time, was simply a soul fused to his armor, not having a physical body.[280] As for the "consciousness" part, it's hard to know if it refers to mind control or something else.
- Telekinesis: Nupraptor proved to be able to use Telekinesis at a decent level, being able to move multiple objects in multiple directions simultaneously, and without moving a muscle, and is powerful enough to tear humans apart.[281] In Soul Reaver 1, Inside of a cave, Raziel finds the Force Glyph, which is given by a statue of Nupraptor,[282] and allows, to cast a Telepathic Blast to sends enemies flying.[283]
- Illusion Creation: The Guardians proved to be able to create illusions, Nupraptor was able to create several rows of illusory psyche spheres. to attack Kain, being able to move them at will. The Original Mind Guardian has the ability "Mental Simulacrum"[284], which allows him to create up to 4 clones of himself, it should be noted that the clones have the Guardian's abilities, but are destroyed in 1 hit, or if the real body of the guardian is attacked.[285] Both the illusions of Nupraptor and the the Original Mind Guardian are powerful enough to do real damage to their enemies (something that is repeated with other Illusions.
The Guardian of Dimension Powers:[]
Description: The Dimension guardian was charged with controlling and defining the very boundaries, consistency, and form of space itself.[286] As you can see the main ability of the Dimension Guardian is to have a very high control of the space, in fact the rest of his abilities are nothing more than sub-abilities of this power. In Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain it was already seen and commented that the Circle of Nine had Space/Spatial Manipulation powers (being able to make a building far bigger inside than out),[287]so this is not something new.
- Portal Creation and Summoning/Banishment: The Guardians can create portals and doors to other dimensions, specifically to summon creatures, it should be noted that the creatures are under the control of the Guardian.[288] [289]The portals should not only serve to summon creatures, but also send creatures to other dimensions and leave them trapped there.
Note: Although in Blood Omen 1 Kain says that "The Matriarch of Avernus, the Lady Azimuth: her magical planning skills summoned demons through runes inscribed in human blood.", does not mean that she can only summon demons by creating portals with blood and not naturally, after all as it says above, the Dimension guardian, has virtually absolute control of space, plus the Cenobites of Avernus (who are logically weaker than Azimuth on this specific subject of magic, since she is "The Matriarch of Avernus"), are able to summon Demons or even fire from the Demon realm to the Material realm at will,[290][291] so it wouldn't make sense that she couldn't summon demons by her own means, and her followers could.
- Dimensional Travel and Dimensional Sight: Guardians are able to see other dimensions, as well as move between them at will.[292]In Blood Omen the token Azimuth had (given by the pillar of dimensions), allowed to see other planes/dimensions, so this ability was already seen.[293]
- Teleportation: They can Teleport very quickly.[294]
- Multi-Teleportation and Damage Reflection: Considering that the "Dimension" fragment of Balance Emblem, connected to the Dimension principle, allows Kain to do a Multi-teleportation, allowing him to attack multiple enemies practically instantly, and reflect damage to nearby enemies,[44] [43] the Dimension Guardian should be able to use these abilities, to even a higher extent.
- Spatial Manipulation: The Guardian can "Control and defining the very boundaries, consistency, and form of space itself".[286]
The Dimension fragment is also called the "Space related-shard of the Balance Emblem" by the Legacy of Kain defiance script, which confirms again that the rest of powers that the dimension guardian shows during the games are sub-abilities of this power.
The Guardian of Conflict Powers[]
Description: The Conflict Guardian was charged with presiding over the principles of change and upheaval.[295] This description doesn't say much about his abilities, but it does if we look at one of his powers:
- Empathic Manipulation: Kain's "Inspire Hate" spell that affects creatures with rage, making them attack each other, is directly related to the Pillar of Conflict,[138] so they can use this ability, something confirmed by Daniel Cabuco, saying they can "incite or resolve Wars/Battle/Arguments[296], and the description says that they "presinding over the principles of change and upheal", so not only can they affect enemies with rage, but they can also do the opposite effect, making them calm down and stop fighting. The Flame shard from Balance Emblem, is able to make two statues animated by magic (that do not have feelings or a brain), fight each other, and as confirmed before, the power of that shard and the "Inspire Hate" spell are the same power, and as you can also see in the Inspire Hate video, it also works with non-brain things like shadows.
- Draw Energy from the Battle: As the Name says they can "Draw Energy from the Battle[296], this basically makes them have unlimited stamina, being able to fight and cast magic forever. As long as the Guardian fights (or other people around him), he/she will gain energy, therefore his stamina will remain the same or even recover more than what spends.
- Summon Shades: With the Spell "Call Shadows", the Guardian can summon Shades, to help him in battle,[297][298]these creatures are made of "Dark cloud of Mist or Vapor", that do not have a physical form, being invulnerable to normal physical attacks, but magic or Telekinesis can damage them.[34]
- Energy Projection and temporal invulnerability (Force-Field): The Guardians proved to be able to project energy in several ways: Multiple small projectiles in various directions, small projectiles that follow the enemy, or a massive Wall of Energy.[299] "Discard Bolt" which in addition, protects him a magical aura, that makes him invulnerable while casting the spell.[300]
The Guardian of Nature powers[]
Description: The Nature guardian was charged with governing over plants, animals, and all forms of natural life in Nosgoth.[301] The Guardian of Nature is by far the Guardian with the most destructive power, and also possesses perhaps the most abilities (along with the Guardian of the States). His power goes beyond simply controlling some plants, he can control "Nature" in every sense of the word.
- Plant Manipulation: As the description says, the guardian rules over the plants, so he has absolute control over them, not only to manipulate them but also to give them life, animating them.[302]
- Tentacle Summoning: With the spell "Nature's Girp", the guardian can summon tentacles to aid him, these tentacles have a "massive strength", trapping the enemy and slowly taking away their health, and are able to move between the material and spectral planes at will. They are strong enough to make Kain and Raziel struggle to free themselves from their grip.[303][304][305]
- Animal Manipulation: The Guardian "govern" over the Animals.
- Communication with Nature: The guardian is able to Communicate with Nature[306] (plants, animals, etc), this would not only be useful to give them orders to do things, or ask for help, but the plants and animals could tell the guardian if there is danger or an enemy in the area.
- Biological Manipulation and Poison Manipulation: The Guardian can "Warp creatures Growth and Abilities"[306]creating "New and weird forms of life for his own purposes",[302] an example of this abilities are the creatures near the Dark Eden.
As Kain says, these creatures used to be human, and were warped. As seen in the video there are slug-like creatures that spit venom, and others with humanoid shape that project their body protrusions in all directions, humanoid creatures with very long arms or other animals with a massive amount of teeth.
-Kain
From the dialogue, Kain seems to indicate that the creations are of a single person, and considering that since the original game, the Guardian of Nature could "influence" animals creating "new and weird forms of life", plus what Daniel said, everything seems to indicate that the Guardian of Nature created them. This ability could not only be used defensively (giving mutations to animals and other creatures to making them more powerful, or making them have new/better abilities), but it would also be very useful offensively, since it could deform the enemy, until he dies or cannot fight (this of course would allow him to defeat him almost instantly, ignoring his durability), and if an ability of this one is very problematic, he could warp it to make it useless, etc
- Elemental and Weather Manipulation: The Guardian can Manipulate the Elements and has "The Weather itself is at his behest".[302]
Although it is never specified which elements it controls, knowing that it controls the weather, at the very least it can manipulate Electricity/Lightning, Water/Snow, Air and Fire by controlling the temperature.
Seeing another of his abilities (which is below), he also controls Earth as well as Lava (can summon eartquakes and volcanic eruptions). in general it is likely that the Guardian of Nature is able to control the fundamental Elements of Nosgoth: Air, Water/Ice, Earth, Fire, Light, and possibly Darkness, plus Lava. After all the Nature Guardians are "one of the Circle of Nine ("the Protectors of Hope") - the magicians whose magic preserve the order of magical power in the world", and this elements are part of the world. I do not count the Spirit element since it is formed by the souls of the Guardian Balance, and logically the Guardian of Nature would not have access to it.
Also keep in mind that Kain in Blood Omen has the "Light" spell that allows him to illuminate dark areas, taking into account that many of his powers in that game, are specific powers of the Guardians, it would not be strange that this is one of the elements that the Guardian controls.
If he can control the weather at will, he is able to create storms and summon lightning from the sky, control the wind (Air), rain (Water), the temperature, create fog, etc.
- Summon Natural Phenomena: The Guardian can Summon Natural Phenomenon for combat.[306] This is one of those abilities that has many sub-powers and is what makes the Guardian the most powerful. It is not unusual for him to have this ability, seeing that he can control the elements, the weather and has control over nature. First of all, what is a Natural phenomena, as we have the following definition: "Natural phenomena are those that occur or manifest without human input". The most complete list of Natural phenomena I could find in wikipedia, and it includes the following: "Weather, fog, thunder, tornadoes; biological processes, decomposition, germination; physical processes, wave propagation, erosion; tidal flow, moonbow, blood moon and natural disasters such as electromagnetic pulses, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, midnight sun and polar night". I am going to focus on the Natural Disasters that are what Daniel likely thought when he said that ability, and they are the ones that have more senses. Since it can summon the phenomena "for combat", the guardian would be able to control both the magnitude and in which specific zone it would be summoned
The Guardian should be able to summon the next Natural Phenomenon/disasters:
- Avalanche: An avalanche (also called a snow slide) is a rapid flow of snow down a slope, such as a hill or mountain.
- Blizzard: A blizzard is a severe snowstorm characterized by strong sustained winds of at least 56 km/h (35 mph) and lasting for a prolonged period of time—typically three hours or more. A ground blizzard is a weather condition where snow is not falling but loose snow on the ground is lifted and blown by strong winds. Blizzards can have an immense size and usually stretch to hundreds or thousands of kilometres.
- Drougths: An extended period when a region receives a deficiency in its water supply, whether atmospheric, surface or ground water. A drought can last for months or years, or may be declared after as few as 15 days.
- Earthquake: An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the shaking of the surface of the Earth resulting from a sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes can range in size from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to propel objects and people into the air, and wreak destruction across entire cities.
- Floods: A flood is an overflow of water that submerges land that is usually dry
- Hurricane/tropical cyclone: A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain and/or squalls. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by different names, including hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression, or simply cyclone
- Meteor: The Guardian should be able to summon meteors from space to the planet/place where it is located and cause massive damage.
- Storms: A storm is any disturbed state of an environment or in an astronomical body's atmosphere especially affecting its surface, and strongly implying severe weather. It may be marked by significant disruptions to normal conditions such as strong wind, tornadoes, hail, thunder and lightning (a thunderstorm), heavy precipitation (snowstorm, rainstorm), heavy freezing rain (ice storm), strong winds (tropical cyclone, windstorm), or wind transporting some substance through the atmosphere as in a dust storm, blizzard, sandstorm, etc.
- Derecho – A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm that is associated with a land-based, fast-moving group of severe thunderstorms.
- Dust devil – A small, localized updraft of rising air.
- Dust storm – A situation in which winds pick up large quantities of sand or soil, greatly reducing visibility.
- Firestorm – Firestorms are conflagrations which attain such intensity that they create and sustain their own wind systems. It is most commonly a natural phenomenon, created during some of the largest bushfires, forest fires, and wildfires. The Peshtigo Fire is one example of a firestorm. Firestorms can also be deliberate effects of targeted explosives, such as occurred as a result of the aerial bombings of Dresden. Nuclear detonations generate firestorms if high winds are not present.
- Hailstorm – A type of storm that precipitates round chunks of ice. Hailstorms usually occur during regular thunderstorms. While most of the hail that precipitates from the clouds is fairly small and virtually harmless, there are occasional occurrences of hail greater than 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter that can cause much damage and injuries.
- Ice storm – Ice storms are one of the most dangerous forms of winter storms. When surface temperatures are below freezing, but a thick layer of above-freezing air remains aloft, rain can fall into the freezing layer and freeze upon impact into a glaze of ice. In general, 8 millimetres (0.31 in) of accumulation is all that is required, especially in combination with breezy conditions, to start downing power lines as well as tree limbs. Ice storms also make unheated road surfaces too slick to drive upon. Ice storms can vary in time range from hours to days and can cripple small towns and large metropolitan cities alike.
- Microburst – A very powerful windstorm produced during a thunderstorm that only lasts a few minutes.
- Thunderstorm – A thunderstorm is a type of storm that generates both lightning and thunder. It is normally accompanied by heavy precipitation. Thunderstorms occur throughout the world, with the highest frequency in tropical rainforest regions where there are conditions of high humidity and temperature along with atmospheric instability. These storms occur when high levels of condensation form in a volume of unstable air that generates deep, rapid, upward motion in the atmosphere. The heat energy creates powerful rising air currents that swirl upwards to the tropopause. Cool descending air currents produce strong downdraughts below the storm. After the storm has spent its energy, the rising currents die away and downdraughts break up the cloud. Individual storm clouds can measure 2–10 km across.
- Wind storm – A storm marked by high wind with little or no precipitation. Windstorm damage often opens the door for massive amounts of water and debris to cause further damage to a structure. European windstorms and derechos are two type of windstorms. High wind is also the cause of sandstorms in dry climates.
- Tornado: A tornado is a violent, destructive whirlwind storm occurring on land. Usually its appearance is that of a dark, funnel-shaped cloud. Often tornadoes are preceded by or associated with thunderstorms and a wall cloud
- Tildal Wave/Tsunami: A tsunami is a series of waves in a water body caused by the displacement of a large volume of water, generally in an ocean or a large lake. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions (including detonations, landslides, glacier calvings, meteorite impacts and other disturbances) above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami. Unlike normal ocean waves, which are generated by wind, or tides, which are generated by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun, a tsunami is generated by the displacement of water by a large event.
- Volcanic Eruption: A volcanic eruption occurs when magma is released from a volcano. Volcanic eruptions can be quite calm and effusive, or they can be explosive. Effusive eruptions produce lava flows, while explosive eruptions produce ash and pyroclastic density currents.
- Whirlpool: A whirlpool is a body of rotating water produced by opposing currents or a current running into an obstacle*
As you may recall, the Guardians affect the entire world of Nosgoth (which is like a supercontinent) with their powers (even a single Guardian), so the scale at which the Guardian of Nature can make/summon Natural disasters is massive, at least on the scale of multiple countries, likely on a Multi-Continental scale, since as I said before, it makes no sense that together their powers affect the entire world, but individually affect for example one city (even more so when each guardian has completely different powers) and like i said before, there are examples of a single guardian using his powers on the entire world.
Note: All natural disasters are related to some element or a variation of it: Tornado is Air, Earthquake is Earth, etc. so as I said it makes sense that he can summon them, being able to manipulate the elements and the Weather.
The Guardian of Energy Powers[]
Description: The energy guardian's field of magical specialty is the harnessing and manipulation of energy.[307] They ruled over the wild arching power that spawns the storm and sparks life itself.[308]
- Energy Projection: The Guardian can project homing energy bolts to attack enemies.[309]
- Objects Creation: The Guardian is able to manipulate Energy to give it a definite shape, this ability was seen when Dejoule created energy spheres, using them to defend herself,[310] likely they can create other objects.
- Lightning Manipulation: As I demonstrated above, Kain's "Lightning Spell In Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (which summons Lightning from the sky powerful enough to desintegrate humans in armor)"[133] is an ability of the Energy pillar, so the Guardian must have it (and as we commented before it would be at least over x4 more powerful than the one shown by Kain. Likewise the Guardian has the ability "Sky Fury" that allows him to project Lightning from his fingers, being "difficult to dodge due to its speed",[311][312] which would indicate that it is real Lightning speed from the sky, more if we take into account that the guardian "rule over the wild arching power that spawns the storm", and that there are already creatures that can attack and move "as fast as lightning bolt from the sky".
- Damage Transferal: "Using its contrast over the omnipresent surges of energy, this Guardian can imbue its own body or the bodies of its allies with a shocking force. Any physical attack upon the effected target while in this state will cause just as much damage back upon the attacker."[313][314]
- Limited Techology Manipulation: The guardian has the ability to draw energy and manipulate it to power objects/devices.[315]
- Aura: The Guardian can surround his body with a special aura: "This magical aura has an insidious effect on anybody standing nearby - sapping their energy and blistering their skin, sterilizing cells, etc.[307]" Basically if a creature is close to the guardian, its energy will start to weaken/decrease and the cells will start to die, in short if someone stays close to the guardian for a long time, it could even die, this makes the guardian extremely difficult to fight melee (unless you are a creature with unlimited energy and does not need cells to live).
The Guardian of Time Powers[]
Description: They were charged with keeping the flowing currents and shifting movements of time in check.[316]
- Time Manipulation: Time Guardians can "Bend Time",[317][318] they are able to slow down time and speed up time, this can be done in area (the Guardians also are affected)[319][320] or with a specific enemy with a projectile, as shown by Moebius in his fight against Kain.[321] Time Guardians should be able to slow down or speed up time up to at least more than 1/16 times his normal speed, likely over 20 times (As explained before, Kain as Balance Guardian can reduce the speed of the enemy by 1/4 of his normal speed[142], and even after being purified with the souls of the Balance Guardians prior to him {that are at least 3, likely 4}, he still cannot use the powers to the same extent as a pure guardian, which means that the Guardian could slow down/speed up time by more than 1/16 (low-end) or 1/20 (high-end) of his normal speed). Time Guardians should not only be able to slow down or speed up time, but also to stop it. This is supported by the fact that Kain himself in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, is able to use the spell "Incapacitate", which cast a projectile that freezes enemies in time on impact[151], several of Kain's powers as mentioned before, are powers of different guardians, and it would not make sense that the Guardian of Time who "Kept in Check the shifting movements of time" would not be able to freeze/stop time, but a Balance Guardian (who has access to a smaller amount of power from the Pillar of Time) can, so they also have this power (of course much more powerful). The reason of why they never stop time in an area is likely that as shown above, they are affected by their powers, so they would frozen themselves in time. Also in Nosgoth, there is a place called the Eternal Prison, a place where time is frozen.[322][323] As I say this place is part of the world, and the Guardian of Time (and the Circles of Nine in general) "maintain the order of magical power in the world", which would include this place. Also in the Eternal Prison, there are special mechanisms that allow to rewind the time of objects (by repairing them), including a giant statue of the Time Guardian Moebius,[324] this further supports that the Time Guardian is related to this place, and it is quite likely that the Time Guardian can also rewind the time of objects.
Note: Although the original Guardian's time manipulation only lasts about 5 seconds in Defiance, Kain using the same power can use it for twice as long (around 10 seconds) being a Balance Guardian[142], and with the "time" fragment of the Balance Emblem, which would only have a fraction of the pillars power, can slow down time for over 15 seconds,[46] so that makes no sense, so it's probably done this way to balance the boss fight.
- Nigh-Omnisciense (Retrocognition/Clairvoyance/Precognition): The Guardian of Time is able to see the Time-Stream, which grant them "a certain level of Omniscience". The Time Stream allows them to see anything the guardian wants, whether in the past present or future, including other paths/possibilities in that timeline. As the only limitation, they cannot see what someone with free will, such as Raziel, is doing, although they can see the possible "paths" that person might take.[264][265][266][267][261] Still keep in mind that Wraith Raziel is the only person with free will in Legacy of Kain, and the only other way to change history/fate is literally Reality Waping, so the Guardian should be able to see every creature (including other verses), unless that creature has resistance to Clairvoyance, Precognition, etc.
Note: Although Daniel Cabuco has said that the Guardian of Time can only see the Time-Stream through the Chronoplast, and not in a natural way,[325] the truth is that this contradicts one of the official guides, and the games: It is said that The Original Guardian of Time, "Keep in check, the flowings currents of time", Amy Henning confirmed that the Chronoplast was created by Moebius,[326] and the Chronoplast had some portals, that Raziel was able to see the past, and possible future events, seeing the "currents of time itself", something also confirmed by developers.[327][328][329] So the original Time Guardian could not see the Time-Stream in the Chronoplast, because it did not exist. But it is possibly that the Chronoplast improves the Time-Stream guardian's vision, either by letting him see things more clearly, in a more distant time span or allows to see the multiples paths of time simultaneously. Besides that as seen in Blood Omen, Moebius showed the Time-Stream to Kain using a cauldron, and although the Cauldron is close to the chronoplast (since it is Moebius' lair), it is not the same, thus confirming that he can see it elsewhere. also the Guardians in the intro of Blood Omen, were watching the Time-Stream through the "Viewing basin", which is the same that Moebius uses to show Raziel where Kain is, and of course, this room is not the chronoplast either.
- Time-Travel and Limited Space-Time Manipulation: Time Guadians have "Control over time travel",[330] as seen with Moebius, they can create time travel machines, either small ones,[331] specific rooms[332] for that, or the Chronoplast, which not only allows to travel to the past or future like the others, but the person who travels in it, can choose where exactly he wants to go (basically a limited form of space-time manipulation). Moebius also showed the ability to intercept people who are traveling in time, being able to bring them to where he wants (Raziel should have gone to the pillars which is where Kain had gone).[333] When Amy Henning was asked (among other things) if the Guardians can travel in time at will, she said that "None of this has been revealed yet", giving the possibility that they can travel in time at will.
- Summoning/Illusions from the past, present and future: Moebius in his combat against Kain, summoned warriors from the past, present and even "a future version of Kain".[334][335]The first warriors are creatures with blue blood, in Blood Omen the creatures that have blue blood are ghosts, although these are physical/tangible, in fact Malek the Conflict Guardian, created machines that allowed him to attach the souls of fallen soldiers to their armors, in fact seeing the armors and comparing them with the Sarafan that Malek has as soldiers, they seem to be Sarafan, so it is possibly that he did something similar to what Malek did (or likely the developers simply re-used the models). The second one is clearly a normal human. Kain can be seen that when he is destroyed is made of sand, i.e was an "illusion" or a creation, even so still does physical damage, it is also likely that the creation has the powers of the person who summons, as the illusion seems to teleport as Elder Kain, so it is possible that although it is an illusion/creation, the Guardian is able to summon a future version of his enemy with his powers, but not his physical durability.
The Guardian of States powers[]
Description: They were charged with presiding over the shapes and forms of all physical matter.[336]
The definition of matter is any substance that has mass and occupies Space by having volume. Basically everything is matter, except energy, which has no mass.
As the description says, the guardian is able to control the shape and state/form of all physical matter at will, manipulating his environment at will by giving it the shape he wants, whether to attack, defend himself or even create weapons and objects by reshaping matter. He is also able to change the state of matter to any of the 4 states at will, something confirmed in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain.[337]
The states of matter are four; Solid, Liquid, Gas, and Plasma, and each state change has a specific name.
The Guardian is also able to "Warp the states (of matter) to make them different", such as transforming the ground into lava, etc. [338] Basically they can transmute matter at will. This ability was shown in the games as i will shown later.
Of course by "Presinding over the shape and form/state of all physical matter", he can also affect living beings, including himself or other creatures.
If someone asks if this power has been used on living beings, besides the fact that living things are also made of matter (as they also has mass and volume) the answer is yes, Anacrothe the Alchemist Guardian of the states attacked with a transmutation projectile to kill Mortanius the Necromancer - Guardian of Death (who is the most powerful Guardian), but Mortanius was able to resist it, to immediately after kill Anacrothe, so we do not know what effect the attack had, but we know that it can be used with living beings, and the Guardian is able to affect its own body.
This Guardian could do one-shoot in many different ways, such as transforming a person's blood into lava or acid, evaporating his body thus disintegrating it, turning a creature into stone and destroying it, remove the Oxygen of the Blood, etc.
I took most of the descriptions from Superpowerwiki/powerlisting, as they are probably better explained than if I wrote them myself, although I eliminated things that a guardian might not be able to do or are redundant.
- Condensation: The guardian can condense gases into liquids, changing their state of matter from gas to liquids. This is how rain happens when it gets cold in the sky where the clouds are.
- Constructs Creation: The guardian can shape matter, into tools, objects, weapons and other items, or create structures/buildings of varying permanence.
- Deionization: The guardian can deionize atoms and molecules, which can be caused by simply cooling down plasma and ions into gases. Basically Allows create Air and Gas.
- Evaporation (Sublimation/Vaporation): The Guardian cause objects, including themselves and/or other beings, atoms separate and lose cohesion, "evaporating" into the surrounding environment. They can either fuse target back together or sublimate target by fatally dispersing the atoms/molecules into nothingness. During the process of vaporization and fusing, target may move to a new location.
- Disintegration: By evaporating something/someone that thing is effectively desintegrated.
- Gas Manipulation: The Guardian can create, shape and manipulate anything that is Gaseous (Air, Oxygen, Neon, Carbon Dioxide, Vapor, Nitrogen, Chlorine, Hydrogen, Helium, Smoke etc), a phase of matter characterized by relatively low density, high fluidity/no definite shape, and lack of rigidity. Gas is very compressible but tends to expand indefinitely, and it fills any container.A small change in temperature or pressure produces a substantial change in its volume. The uses of this ability range from creating gas to camouflage to creating poison.
- Explosion Inducement (creating flammable gases): Can cause an explosion in a variety of ways and of any scale, with varying effects ranging from stunning to total annihilation.
- Fire Negation: The guardian can negate fire and any fire-using attacks (by manipulating oxygen gases required to make fire)
- Ionization: The guardian can ionize different types of atoms and molecules, which can be caused by simply heating up air/gas, electrical activity, or changes in the air's electric fields, etc. In other words, the user can create plasma that they can use as an ionized air channel/medium for to allow electric current to flow through, thereby creating electricity. They can tap into a variety of different energies, even cause certain ionization to produce positive electricity.
- Discharge: The guardian can control the flow of electric charge through a gas, liquid or solid and other matters. Properties and effects of electric discharges are useful over a wide range of magnitudes. Tiny pulses of current are used to detect ionizing radiation. The user can release large quantities of electrical energies in radius wise to cause massive damage. The guardian can also formulate a current as to how the electrical energy flows and guide it as to where the user desires.
- Electricity Generation: The guardian can generate electricity.
- Liquid Manipulation: The Guardian can shape and manipulate anything that is Liquid (Water, Blood, Mercury, Acids, Lava, Milk, Oil, etc), the only state of matter with a definite volume but no fixed shape. A liquid is made up of tiny vibrating particles of matter, such as atoms and molecules, held together by intermolecular bonds. Like a gas, a liquid is able to flow and take the shape of a container, but unlike a gas, a liquid does not disperse to fill every space of a container, and maintains a fairly constant density. Some liquids resist compression, while others can be compressed. A distinctive property of the liquid state is surface tension, leading to wetting phenomena.
- Viscosity Manipulation: The Guardian can manipulate viscosity: the resistance of fluids to a change shape, influencing spraying, injection molding, and surface coating
- Melting: The Guardian can liquefy objects/organisms by causing the molecules to merge together and thus lose total physical cohesion. Viscosity depends on the object being liquified, if it has a high water content then the object could become completely water-like liquid. If the object is rock-like or inorganic, then it will become a thick and mud-like liquid, while metal would become like mercury.
- Ground Liquefaction: The Guardian is able to liquefy any ground type (such as ice, rock, sand, lava, etc.)
- Plasma Manipulation: The Guardian can shape and manipulate Plasma, a state of matter consisting of fully ionized gas of low density containing an approximately equal number of positive ions and electrons. It is important to note that although they are unbound, these particles are not ‘free’. When the charges move they generate electrical currents with magnetic fields, and as a result, they are affected by each other’s fields.
- Density Manipulation: The Guardian can manipulate density, which is defined as mass per unit of volume. This allows him to alter solidity, change the size of substances, create or destroy matter/mass in a volume, change inertial resistance (mass), make things intangible, either strengthen or weaken gravity, concentrate or expand matter, or create pressure differences in a fluid (gas, liquid, plasma) to induce a current and possibly use it to move solids.
- Solid Manipulation: The Guardian can shape and manipulate anything that is Solid (Concrete, Crystal, Dust, Glass, Metals, Minerals, Sand, Wood, Snow, etc), characterized by structural rigidity and resistance to changes of shape or volume. The atoms in a solid matter are tightly bound to each other, either in a regular geometric lattice (crystalline solids, which include metals and ordinary water ice) or irregularly (an amorphous solid such as common window glass).
- Semisolid Manipulation: The Guardian can shape and manipulate semisolids, semisolid-like object constructs as well as being able to generate or reshape semisolids.
- Solidification: The Guardian can solidify or give solid-like properties to of Liquid (Freezing), Gas (Deposition), and plasma or other form of matter by causing the loose molecules/particles/energy to come together, with the level of solidity going from loose jelly to metal-like hardness or beyond.
- Intangibility Negation: Being able to change the physical state of matter by solidifying it, the guardian would be able to "deactivate", so to speak, the intangibility of enemies, either elemental (such as water or mist as the guardian himself uses, etc.) or intangibility in the form of a ghost, since the guardian proved to be able to use his powers on himself, being a ghost (as shown below).
- Shapeshifting: Kain's Wolf Form[124] and Bat Form in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain[126], are powers of the Pillar of States[339] the Guardian is also able to transform into mist (Gaseous state), and likely, they are able to change their body between the 4 states (Solid, Liquid, Gas and Plasma), as well as transform/shape their body to practically any physical form, as they can control the physical shape and state of their body at will, basically the guardian would be able to transform into anything, be it an object, creature, etc. As we know they are also able to warp matter to make it different (i.e. Transmutation), so besides being able to transform into different creatures or objects, the guardian is able to modify those forms to give them new effects (for example they transform into water, and then warp that form into blood/lava or transform into a poisonous gas, change their body to be made of steel, etc). This was already seen with his Mist Form:
- Quiescent Transformation: "This spell transforms the Guardian into mist, making him invulnerable to attack" as you can see in the video, the guardian can transform as many times as he wants almost instantly, even while being attacked, and as he warp his Mist Form into his "Dash Mode", he changes his color to orange and creates Lightning around it, and wraps Raziel in it, he very slowly start to absorb his life energy or damage him, it is not something clear.[340] [341]Raziel is not able to touch the Guardian using the Wraith Blade, even after projecting an energy blast, being in the middle of the guardian, the same was not affected, it is worth mentioning that Raziel is capable of damaging other beings with elemental intangibility such as the Shades, and this mist form is intangible to the Wraith Blade which is magical.[342][34] Basically even if you can attack other elemental intangible beings as Raziel can, you cannot harm the guardian in this form, the way to damage the guardian in this form, would be if you are able to damage beings that have been shown to be immune to attacks that can affect other intangible beings or abilities like Spatial Manipulation or Reality Warping. Also keep in mind that the Guardian is able to de-transform practically instantly, this would avoid traps or attacks that can absorb its mist form. Although the official guide mentioned that the guardian is vulnerable for a instant while he is in his "dash mode", this is never seen in the games, being the Guardian invulnerable all the time while in Mist Form..
- Matter Transmutation: The States guardian can warp matter to make it different.
Daniel Cabuco's statement that States Guardians can "Warp the States (of Matter), to make them different"[338], has been seen in the games, either with the ability "Quiesent Transformation", shown above, or as shown with the Energy dome of Dark Eden (Created with the combination of the powers of 3 Guardians: Bane the Nature Guardian, Dejoule the Energy Guardian, and Anarchrothe the States Guardian), which Warp matter, turning a normal ground of earth and grass, into volcanic ground with rivers of lava, and which transformed normal water into fire[163] (which is in fact the example Daniel said), so this ability is 100% confirmed.
This ability would be extremely useful, transforming for example wood or earth into steel to make objects much more resistant, or the opposite effect transforming armor/weapons of enemies into more fragile materials, transforming water into lava/acid to attack enemies with it or transforming the water/blood of his body, eliminating enemies from inside, creating poisonous gases, etc. It would also be extremely useful for a vampire like Kain, as he could turn the water he creates or is near, into blood to recover energy if he is seriously injured, or to avoid large amounts of water. And surely many more uses.
- Petrification: As the Guardian can transmutate matter should be able to transform matter, including living beings, into stone.
- Non-Physical Interaction: As seen with the original Guardian of the States, the Guardians of the States are able to affect ghosts with their matter Manipulation, as the Guardian was able to change his physical state (transforming into mist), despite being a "spectre".
The Guardian of Death powers[]
Description: They were charged with helping to ensure equivalency between life and rebirth.[343]
- Necromancy: Death Guardians are skilled in "manipulating the art of death" [344](i.e. Necromancy, even Mortanius has the nickname of the Necromancer). They have shown various uses for this ability:
- Summon Undead: Mortanius was able to summon Skeleton warriors, Exploding Skeletons, 2 Black liches which project a homing energy projectiles, and each one summons two skeletons, Ghosts and Shadows, which use to break Anarcrothe's back.[345]
- Soul Manipulation: As Kain confirmed, the "Spirit Death" spell that launches a projectile that upon impact removes the enemy's soul, instantly killing him, "is worthy of the Necromancer himself"[145][146][346] (Mortanius). Mortanius was also able to remove the soul from Malek's body (and destroying his physical body in the process leaving only his bones), and fuse it with his armor,[347] to the point that if the armor separates, Malek is able to put the pieces together and reassemble himself.[348]
- Resurrection and Self-Resurrection: As Guardian of Death Mortanius is able to resurrect people as he did with Kain (although he needed the heart of darkness to transform him into a Vampire),[349] he also showed to be able to resurrect himself, if his physical body is destroyed (turn into dust and a puddle of blood), in a few seconds he is able to create another one and appear wherever he wants, he can do it at least twice before succumbing to the possession of the Hylden Lord (below is the explanation that surely he can do it many more times), but this new body is very fragile, being destroyed in 1 hit.<[243]
- Hell-Fire Manipulation: Mortanius reforged Kain's iron armor with Hellfire.[48]
- Dimensional Travel: Mortanius as the Guardian of Death can move freely between the material plane (the realm of the living) and the spectral plane (the realm of the dead).
Note: Keep in mind that Mortanius, the only Guardian of Death who has shown his powers during the fight with Kain, was being possessed by another entity (the Hylden Lord), and minutes before the fight against Kain, that entity confirmed that Mortanius was extremely weakened,[350] so the scale/power of his abilities should be much higher than those shown (e.g. summoning much more undead creatures, being able to resurrect more times, etc).
The Guardian of Balance Powers[]
Description: The Guardians of Balance with their magic "influence the regulation of other magic on Nosgoth".[351]
Without going into complex definitions, Influence means have the ability to affect something or someone. And regulate is " To fix or adjust the time, amount, degree, or rate of something", in this case of Nosgoth's magic.
Control over Magic: In short, the Balance Guardians are able to control the magic of Nosgoth itself, i.e. the magic of the Pillars of Nosgoth, which makes sense considering that the Magic of Guardians of the Pillars are described to "preserve the order of the magical power of the world".[272]
Balance Guardians are described as having the ability to use the powers of other Pillars/Guardians to kill them if necessary.[352] And as I show above, Kain himself being a Balance Guardian (but not knowing it), during Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, uses different powers of different Guardian/Pillars:
- Bat Form and Wolf Form=Pillar of States.
- Inspire Hate=Pillar of Conflict.
- Slow Time=Pillar of Time.
- Spirit Death=Pillar of Death.
- Lightning=Pillar of Energy.
And there may be some more examples.
It's not just that the Symbols of Kain's powers and the Pillars are very similar (or in some cases are exactly the same), but the developers themselves have confirmed that some of Kain's powers in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain are powers of the Pillars of Nosgoth, and even the game itself shows it, this with the Balance Emblem, a Emblem form by 5 different fragments, which as the name implies and developers confirm, is made by the Ancient Vampires (the ones that create the Pillars of Nosgoth) for the Guardian/Scion of Balance, with each fragment representing a different Principle/Pillar, and some of the powers of the Balance Emblem are stated to be the same that Kain used in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (although on a smaller scale).[37][38] The debug menu of Legacy of Kain Defiance, also confirm this, with the different fragments of the Balance Emblem called: "Time Pillar", "Energy Pillar", "Dimension Pillar" and "Conflict Pillar".[39] This isn't only a thing of the debug menu, for example in the game, Kain himself also says that that one fragment of the Balance Emblem has "The Propeties of Dimension"
It makes sense that Balance Guardians can use the powers of the other Pillars/Guardians, since the Balance Guardian is described as "the Axis" of the Pillars,[353] or that all the other Pillars' Principles "turn around" the Balance Guardian,[354] and the Pillar of Balance itself is described as the one that "Binds" all the Principles/Pillars.[355]
Although of course a Balance Guardian can use the powers of all Pillars, these are on a much small scale than that of the actual Guardians of that Pillar. This is demonstrated by the fact that even though Kain is purified and empowered by the souls of all the Balance Guardians that existed, he is still not able to use the powers on the same scale as the guardians of their respective Pillars.
Feats[]
- Only the Soul Reaver can kill him although he can be incapacitated (all versions)[223][224][225][226][227][228][229][231][232][230]
Blood Omen: Legacy Of Kain/Blood Omen 1:[]
This is the "Fledgling" version of Kain as a vampire, being created as a vampire at the beginning of the game.
- Strength; Striking: Can destroy multiple rocks of his same size (up to a maximum of 3) to small pieces, in a single blow.[356]
- Strength; Striking: Can practically pulverize human-sized metal objects in a single blow.[357]
Note: These feats are done when Kain only drank the first of three magical Blood Fountains, which increased his strength multiple times (Although in gameplay Kain only reflects an increase of strength in his Lifting Strength, the Magic Blood Fountain confirms that it was an increase of "Strength", in general,[358] so it would apply both to the strength to move objects, as to the strength of his blows).
- Speed: Able to dodge arrows at point-blank range.[359]
- Strength; Lifting: He is able to move rocks bigger than him.[2]
- Durability: Able to withstand the blows of the Soul Reaver with relative minor injuries.[164]
Note: The Soul Reaver is described as "The most powerful weapon in the universe of LOK (Legacy of Kain)"[360]. The sword in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is capable of One-shotting enemies, being able to explode up to 4 Giant Demons (the strongest/resistant enemies in the game) in 1 hit,[361] and is much more powerful than this version of Kain (and even his Elder version). The Sword is also much more powerful than Wraith Raziel, being able to explode vampires, including the most powerful Adult Turelim, in one hit, and no matter how many times Raziel strikes this vampires, he is unable to kill them.[362] Wraith Raziel is much more powerful than these vampires (easily at least hundreds of times, Although is likely several thousand times), being that the weaker vampires (The Melchiahim) are able to carve with their bare hands through several meters of stone easily.[363]
- Was completely unaffected by the dome of Energy of the Dark Eden (Created by the Guardians of Nature, State and Energy combing their powers), the dome transform a normal ground into volcanic ground with rivers of lava, warp the rain water into fire, creating a literal rain if fire, and turn humans into warped mutants with poisonous blood.[163]
- Skill: Was able to defeat most of the Circle of Nine, who have live for centuries.
Blood Omen 2:[]
This version of Kain is 400 years older than the one in the first Blood Omen, however he is very weakened, due to having been attacked with Glyph Magic (Magic deadly to vampires) and having been in a coma for 200 years,[166] so his feats are inferior to those of his previous version.
- Strength; Striking: At his weakest point, at the beginning of the game, he is able to punch through humans and rip their hearts out, by the middle of the game he is able to do this but with soldiers wearing thick steel armor, and by the end he is able to do this with Hyldens, who are more powerful/resilient than the latter.[364]
- Strength: Striking: In its weakest state, using a club, it is capable of tearing off a person's head with one blow.[365]
- Strength; Striking: Able to send Sarafan Knights flying with his blows, soldiers with a large steel armor.[366]
- Strength; Lifting: Can grab Sarafan Knight and throw them several meters away with a single arm.[367]
- Strength; Cutting: It is able to cut through steel with its claws easily.[115]
- Strength; Striking: He is equal in strength to the vampire Magnus, who is capable of ripping thick metal bars from the ceiling/floor by striking them, and knocking down a metal door more than twice as big as he is.[368]
- Speed: Can dodge crossbolts at point-blank range.[369]
- Durability: Can fall from great heights without suffering damage.[370]
- Durability: He was not injured by an explosion that left a large hole in a building (Kain was on the other side of the wall where the explosion occurred).[371]
- Was able to effortlessly resist the attempt of the vampire Marcus of Controlling his mind, with Marcus being able to control at least 6 humans simultaneously.[177]
- Skill: Defeated and killed the traitor vampires: Faustus, Marcus, Sebastian, and Magnus, as well as Killed The Hylden Lord, performing different strategies, using different powers according to the circumstances and the environment to his advantage.[372]
Elder Kain (Soul Reaver 1 & 2 and LOK Defiance):[]
This version is 1600 years older than the Blood Omen 2 version. This version is much more powerful/stronger, faster and more resistant than the Blood Omen 1 and 2 version, due to the fact that the vampires increase their power/strength, speed and durability as they evolve. Although, unfortunately, this version has practically no destructive feats.
- Strength: Elder Kain is explicitly "Much more powerful than its BO1 (Blood Omen 1) version".[373]
- Strength: He is described as "One of the strongest vampires that ever existed"[374]. Which corroborates this is that the rest of the vampires see him as a god.[375]
- As I said this version of Kain has practically no destructive feats, but scaling can be applied to lesser vampires, which is something canon within the games themselves: Kain created his 6 vampire children in the following order: Raziel, Turel, Dumah, Rahab, Zephon and Melchiah, using "small portions of soul", with these fragments, Kain calls the soul of the human corpse, and this return to their body, transforming them into vampires. Depending on the size of the soul portion, the vampire is more or less strong. Each son was created with a smaller and smaller fragment, Raziel being the first to be created and therefore the most powerful as he received the "largest" portion of these small soul portions, while Melchiah was the last, and the one who received the smallest portion, making him the weakest son. Each son of Kain then created a clan of vampires, using the same method, reviving corpses by using portions of their soul, creating "hundreds of vampires" in each clan, with the Melchiahim outnumbering the Turelim by 3 to 1,[205][206][207][208][209][210][89] meaning that there are at least 600 Melchiahim and 200 Turelim. In Soul Reaver 1 multiple Adult Melchiahim can carve through several meters of stone with their hands easily (even several of them at the same time, and is shown that all of them have the same strength),[363] their father Melchiah, is at least 600 times stronger than his sons (According to the amount of Soul the vampire is less or more powerful, and Melchiah create at least 600 sons, and as shown in the video above, all the Melchiahim have the same strength, meaning that Melchiah use the same amount of Soul to create each vampire i.e. at least 1/600 th part of his soul to each vampire, and Soul=Power therefore this vampires only have a 1/600th part of his power), and Kain is much stronger than Melchiah. How much stronger? Well it is not known exactly, but as the Soul Reaver 1 manual confirms, the fraction of soul he gave to Melchiah is so small, that literally his body falls apart, this is important because this does not happen with the vampires of the other clans, even though the other sons of Kain created "hundreds of vampires", therefore the portion of soul that Kain used to create Melchiah was smaller, than the one used to create these lesser vampires, and let's remember that soul=power, therefore Kain would be hundreds of times stronger than Melchiah. Assuming that Kain gave 1/200th of his soul to Melchiah (and it could be a smaller amount), we would be left with Kain being about 120,000 times stronger than the Adult Melchiahim. While this may seem like a lot, Kain is among the most powerful vampires that existed in Legacy of Kain and considered a god by the clan vampires, it makes sense, plus Kain explicitly used "Small portions of his soul" in general to create his children, and with each child this small portions become even smaller, and he give to Melchiah the smallest.
- Strength; Lifting: Kain was able to overpower Wraith Raziel effortlessly, while Raziel trying to free himself from Kain's grip was not even able to move Kain's arm, who was just casually talking, while Raziel was using both arms (plus a bit of his torso), and clearly struggling to free himself. Kain then effortlessly frees himself from Raziel, who was pressing him against the wall, knocking him off balance with one arm, while Raziel was using his whole body to press him against the wall (and it is made clear that Kain was allowing himself to be pressed by Raziel).[376] Wraith Raziel is capable of moving several hundred tons explicitly "effortlessly/easily", and was able to collapse a large stone obelisk casually,[377] with the obelisk weighing around 553 tons.[378]
- Speed: Kain is able to dodge and reflect multiple times and at point-blank range, the attack of the Lightning Demons called "Crack of Lightning" this attack according to the official guide of Legacy of Kain Defiance "is as quick and deadly as lightning bolt from the sky". And he is able to fight on equal terms with Wraith Raziel in Legacy of Kain Defiance, being that this version of Raziel is also able to dodge/reflect the point-blank attack, as well as other attacks that may also be as fast as natural lightning.[379]
- Durability: Able to withstand dozens of hits from Raziel's Soul Reaver/Wraith Blade with minor injuries.[380] The spectral version of the Soul Reaver in Soul Reaver 2 increases its power when meeting its physical version, now being able to vaporize enemies with a single blow, even the strongest enemies of the game, the Black Demons, who according to the official German guide of the game, are equal or similar in strength to Wraith Raziel.[381]
- Durability: Completly unharmed by the attacks of Wraith Raziel in his Soul Reaver 1/2 version.[383] Without applying scaling, Wraith Raziel is able to sink its 8 inch claws into stone and metal casually[384]Using scaling Wraith Raziel would be several thousands of times stronger than the Adult Melchiahim (more on this in Raziel profile).
- Skill: Was able to "Easily defeat armies of foes"[185]
- Skill: He was able to effortlessly defeat a highly trained group of vampire hunters, the Sarafan (Legacy of Kain Defiance Comic).
- Conquer the World of Nosgoth in only 100 years with his army of vampires[88] (who were all weak, being Fledglings, plus they could not stand in the sunlight, and the Humans of Nosgoth had already faced vampires on multiple occasions).
- Was able to process the Time-Stream in the Chronoplast, which allows to see the past, present and future, processing a huge amount of information, (possibly infinite information in the process) and that a normal human would go crazy trying to see/understand it.[212][213][214][215][216]
- Defeated Wraith Raziel in the first round of their combat.[385]
Scion of Balance[]
- As the Scion of Balance Kain "Balances the entire world/universe and therefore is able to attack/hurt the Elder God"[244]
Flaws[]
- As a vampire, Kain in Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, has the 5 vampire weaknesses: Fire, Water, a specific sound frequency, impalement and Sunlight.[386][387] Although it should be clarified that none of these weaknesses are deadly due to his immortality. As time goes by, he overcomes these weaknesses:
- In Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Kain drink from Blood fountains that give him immunity to rain and snow.[162]
- In Blood Omen 2, he was unaffected by the sound frequency that stun and caused pain to the vampire Marcus.[388]
- As an Elder, his skin evolved into a natural armor that protects him from impalement and makes him completely immune to sunlight[200][201][202][178] (in his youth this weakened him).
- It has been described that Elder Kain only possesses his weakness to water (which means he is no longer weak to fire).
- Although he is injured by water (which is like acid to vampires), Kain has spells to become immune to it and breathe underwater temporarily.[389]
- The Soul Reaver is the only weapon that can kill him
- Prideful and Full of himself, but not until the point of stupidity, as even as an Elder, despite really don't needing doing it, he uses stealth to infiltrate the Sarafan fortress, or to interrogate enemies[85], and even tells Raziel to don't underestimate to the "Dark Forces" that conspire against them in Soul Reaver 2.[390]
- Prone to bloodlusted rage (Only in his young)
- Easily manipulated (Although the people that manipulate him are described to have "A certain level of Omniscience")

Seemingly unsurprised by Raziel's miraculous return, Kain baited Raziel along the course of his single-minded vendetta, channeling him into battle with his mutated brethren, and into a fateful confrontation at the Pillars, wherein Kain raised the Soul Reaver against Raziel. The ancient blade, believed to be indestructible, shattered when Kain attempted to strike Raziel down. The soul-devouring sentience captive in the blade was thus released, and binding itself to Raziel as a wraith-blade, became his symbiotic weapon." -Raziel Reaver 2 manual page 14
- ↑ "With all other foes exhausted, the conjoined blades turned themselves on me. And I realized, finally, why I had sensed nothing when Janos offered me the blade. The Reaver was never forged to be a soul-stealing weapon...the ravenous, soul-devouring entity trapped in the blade was – and always had been – me. This is why the blade was destroyed when Kain tried to strike me down – the Reaver could not devour its own soul. The paradox shattered the blade." - Raziel. Soul Reaver 2
- ↑ "Is the Soul reaver indestructible aside from the Paradox? Could it not have broken through extended use or someone strong like Kain, Dumah or the Elder God trying to break it with all their strength?" "Yep. The only thing that can break a Reaver is another Reaver (Kain vs William, or Kain hitting Blue Raz). The weapon is forged not just of metal, but with the energies tied to the Pillars. Just as the Pillars are physically indestructible until their guardian dies (despite the Elder tugging on them for centuries), the Reaver is similarly invulnderable." - The Elder God, Moebius and Kain questions at DCabDesing by Daniel Cabuco
- ↑ 34.0 34.1 34.2 SHADES Shades are malignant undead creatures formed from the shattered remnants of creul and malicious souls that coalesce and shift through the spectral wastes. Shades are insubstantial creatures bearing little physical form other than dark clouds of mist or vapor and brightly glowing eyes. Normal weaponry does little to their shadow-bound forms. However they are easily harmed by the attacks of magical artifacts such as the Reavers, magical spells and telekinetic forces, which can easily disperse their body. - Legacy of Kain Defiance Prima official strategy guide page 96
- ↑ 35.0 35.1 The Reaver is the key by which, depending which way it is used, can seal or sunder the pillars. It can kill Kain, sundering the Pillars, or purify him, allowing the new guardians to be born. And as each guardian is born, so the corresponding pillar would be rebooted. - ↑ 37.0 37.1 Of course, what also makes Kain an imposing and memorable character is his weapon, the Reaver, and the power with which he wields it. This time around, Raziel continues to align his Soul Reaver with elemental affinities (water, fire, and other traditional elements) to gain new power. However, in Defiance, Kain gains different abilities for his Reaver in the form of spells earned by completing a vampire relic destined for the Balance Guardian. In homage to Blood Omen 1, some of these spell abilities have been salvaged and updated into 3D from the original game--a move that will hopefully appeal to the hardcore Legacy of Kain fans." - Kyle Manngerberg in "Legacy of Kain Defiance Designer diary #3 at GameSpot, November 5, 2003"
- ↑ 38.0 38.1 The Balance Emblem was a key for enabling Kain to fulfill his destiny as the Scion of Balance. - ↑ 88.0 88.1 LORD KAIN AND THE STORY OF NOSGOTH Dark Gods A millennium has passed since Lord Kain set his capital in the ruins of the Pillars of Nosgoth and began his conquest of the world. We, in turn prowled the twilight of purgatory building six legions of vampires to pillage Nosgoth. The destruction of the major human Kingdoms was inevitable. Within a hundred years, humanity had been thoroughly domesticated. To be sure, there remained some feral humans scattered across the hinterlands, clinging to their hopeless holy war to rid Nosgoth of 'the vampire scourge'. They were tolerated. "Kain was unusually resistant to the blade's effects because of his tie to the Pillar of Balance, and the fact that he was created with the Heart of Darkness inside him. It was only able to cut him and drain life energy from him through various nicks and scratches. Even these did massive damage to him. However, he still does have the ability to turn into a Mist Form, allowing him to sneak through the fog unnoticed and perform unique Stealth Kills on the unsuspecting humans. I wonder, does Kain still have the knowledge to cast "flay", "Slow time", "Blood shower" etc, can he still perform "Charm" and "mind control" powers, can he still summon lightning from the heavens? As a being thousands of years into evolution and perhaps the Eldest of the vampires of the Soul reaver era, what gifts did Kain "mutate" that may not have been obvious? To add further, I read in another thread you said Kain would have, as the Scion of balance powers from all the pillars, what specifically would you suggest he could do with those powers? "Great questions. Kain, in his hundreds of years of evolution, didn't feel he needed subtle spells anymore. Who needs flay when you have a Soul Reaver that can blast their skeleton out of their body, then efficiently consume their blood and souls. He hasn't had a need to sneak into a place for a hundreds of years. (He had lieutenants for that kind of grunt work if needed) Think about all that you learned 10 years ago that you don't use because you basically grew past needing it. Now multiply that by 100 (ie 1000 years). His arrogance also grew as he easily defeated armies of foes. Slow time? Psh.. Didn't even need it anymore. With his lieutenants and clans, his army, what was there to fear? Lone assassin.. good luck. Renegade vampires? (see Soul Reaver). He didn't even need armor anymore. He just grew his skin into hard plates. Remember at the end of SR1, there wasn't anyone to challenge him. He appeared alone in his throne room, probably bored. That said, I really wanted to force him to use some of the old spells on the game after Defiance, where he'd have to create a disguise that faded in sunlight as his skin went back to armor to protect him from its rays." - Daniel Cabuco in "The Elder God, Moebius and Kain questions" at DCabDesing

Kain had a whole host of spells from Blood Omen that I wanted to kind of re-do for the next game (flay for example). The 'designs' upon his chest are merely the thousands of years of vampiric unlife and slow evolution showing upon his body making it more hard, rigid and scaly." - Answers from the defiance team at Eidos Forum.
- ↑ 201.0 201.1 Welcome and thank you for the great question. Kain's skin is hardened to an armor (more flexible in some areas than others) which serves to protect him from sunlight and weapon damage. This replaced his need to have traditional forms of armor, and shows off his power. (and Hubris to some extent) The color is somewhat golden/skin colored, but not high metallic. His skin is not made up of scales. Chitinous refers to the exoskeletal nature of his skin. The scaly part was in reference to the actual texture of his skin not what it's made up of. - ↑ 205.0 205.1 Q: How did Janos make Vorador-like Kain made Raziel and his sons, or like Mortanius made Kain? Was the way Kain made and the way Kain created his brethren the same? How'd Voradoor make his children? A: Without going into too much detail, there are various ways a vampire can be born/created. The ancient/original Vampires (like Janos) had one method, by which Vorador was raised, and by which Vorador would also raise his vampire offspring. This would be a more "traditional" method, where the vampiric curse is passed from one vampire to a human. Mortanius raised Kain by necromancy -- this gives Kain a unique vampiric heritage. Because of this unique heritage, Kain's method of creating his vampire "sons" is also unique -- rather than using the traditional "blood" gift to create a vampire, Kain must donate a portion of his spirit. By breathing a portion of his soul into a corpse, that creature's soul is drawn back into the body and the creature is resurrected as a vampire. This is how Kain raised his six lieutenants in the Tomb of Sarafan. - "Warp Answers with Amy" (Henning) at Eidos Forum.
- ↑ 206.0 206.1 1) The formation of the Sarafan (a monastic order of warrior-priests, charged with the eradication of the vampires) by the Circle and the crusade to counter the "vampire menace". 2) Raziel, Malek, Turel, Dumah, Rahab, Zephon and Melchiah command the armies... 3) The death of the Sarafan commanders. 4) Kain, appreciating the irony of his decision, sets the ruined Pillars as the seat of his fledgling empire, with the unrestored Balance Pillar as the base of his throne. Kain establishes his empire by recruiting six lieutenants. Kain, raised by necromancy, cannot "turn" a vampire via the traditional blood gift. By breathing a small portion of his vampire soul into a corpse, he draws the corpse's soul back into the body - the corpse is then revived as a fledgling vampire. In an act of calculated blasphemy, Kain raids the tomb of the six martyred Sarafan commanders. Their well-entombed corpses-though long dead-have been spared the corruption of the grave. Going from crypt to crypt, he breathes his reviving gift into each of the Sarafan corpses in turn. Thus he raises his six first-born "sons" as the lieutenants of his fledgling empire. Raziel is Raised fist, and thus receives the greatest portion of Kain's gift. The six lieutenants have been too long dead to remember much of their human lives; they are ignorant of their Sarafan roots, or Kain's blasphemous private joke. Kain empire grows. The six lieutenants recruit clans of their own, "turning" the corpses of their human victims to do their bidding. - Legacy Of Kain: Funk Soul Brother In Official U.S. Play Station Magazine issue 36 (by John Davison And Joe Rybicki)

- ↑ 209.0 209.1 The vampires sired by Kain's Lt.s can they sire there own vamps or did the Lts do all the siring of the clans? "The clan leaders sire their clan members in general. They could have given the ability to key sub lieutenants, but since it involves necromancy its not something every vampire can do. Some clan leaders went for fewer numbers with greater power (Turelim) while others went for vast numbers with weaker power (Melchiaim) - Daniel Cabuco in "Normal grunt Vampire creation" at DCabDesing
- ↑ 210.0 210.1 Q: And to finish, all the dumahim for exemple come from dumah or is sons can turn human into dumahim without differences ?" "A: Since vampirism on Kain's line comes from necromancy and soul splitting, all of the children come from their clan leader. (Thus limiting the number of children that can be created, and making it a painful loss to the clan leader when one is killed)." - Daniel Cabuco "Dumah devolution, Razielim etc" at DCabDesing
- ↑ "Lets look at it this way, imagine Kain's most used vampiric spells eventually became a part of his being. Blending and crafting into his unique vampiric DNA. Now each of the bretheren, as you go down the line, got different gifts, but it's not intrinsically that one is better than another. The difference was that the latter bretheren had to make bigger trade-offs to develop their powers. It was part of the devolution, part of the curse that ALL of Kain's gifts were doomed. The later lieutenants had their devolution happen sooner and their 'children' had it happen even more quickly. Raziel's clan had innate gifts of charm, domination, and magic. They weren't the physically strongest, but imagine the power they would wield being able to mentally dominate their enemies. Think about this: When he looks into the Chronoplast, he sees the various weavings of time, wrapping, unfolding and refolding, and is able to take it in without going mad. Only Kain, as an immortal vampire, had the time to sort out what he sees in the Chronoplast, and it took the better part of a century. - Daniel Cabuco in "The Elder God, Moebius and Kain questions!" at DCabDesing.

I am asking because later Jen and Kyle said that the purified Wraith Blade never entered the sword, but was "dispersed" into Kain." "The purification was of Kain, not the reaver. "Kain, as the Scion of Balance, tied to the pillars, could only be killed by the Soul Reaver. (Pillars are the lock, the Reaver is the key). Kain's death by the Soul Reaver would have shattered the last remaining pillar, thus unleashing the Hylden. He was just damn lucky Raziel wanted the Heart of Darkness and grabbed it with his claw instead of stabbing him with the Soul Reaver. - ↑ 227.0 227.1 "Wow great observations here guys. One thing to remember, the Pillars aren't completely destroyed as long as a single guardian exists (thus the binding holds). And Kain can't be killed except by the Reaver. (one of the reasons the Reaver is the Key) So until Kain falls by the Reaver, the Hylden remained trapped in their little slice of hell. Possessing Janos is part of their plan to find ways into the Material Realm, and Raziel is key to defeating Kain. I think their manipulations would have been to make sure Raz became the Hylden champion (prophesy can be rather vague sometimes) and not the Vampire Champion. (Free will is such a monkey wrench). I think the Hylden Lord had figured he didn't need to use the Reaver to kill Kain since he was opening the gateway anyway. I would think that they would want to get rid of both Kain and Raziel and that would have been a perfect way to do it!" "Because history abhors a paradox. Firstly, killing Kain in the womb would have caused another guardian to be born, and most likely Nupraptor would have corrupted him as well. Once Kain was a vampire, remember the only thing that can kill him is the Soul Reaver, which meant Moebius or some champion of Elder God would have had to wield the Soul Reaver and beat him in physical combat. It was far easier to deal with a known quantity and manipulate it. Creating a whole new Guardian might have yielded someone even more of a wildcard than Kain. And then another portal opened allowing Kain to return to Nosgoth just after the pillars fell. My questions here are 1) When he returns to Nosgoth is he still the balance guardian?" Once Raziel purified Kain, destroying the curse of Nupraptor, both the hole in his chest and the ancient scar were removed, symbolizing Kain as the purified Scion of Balance. Kain's primary ability as the Scion of Balance was to create new pillar guardians. (which he couldn't do before because of the curse. - ↑ "Is it impossible to escape preordained fate? And it's interesting to layer this quesiton into a time travel story. This is really the whole crux of the time travel concept - can you change history or not? And if so, what does it mean to change history - in terms of being responsible for the repercussions? I did some research into time travel fiction, in preparation for Soul Reaver 2. For me, the most interesting approach in time travel stories is summed up with the statement: 'you can't go back in time and change history because you didn't'. That's my favorite way of looking at it. If you do go back - then you did go back. Which means that time travel is ultimately a journey of epiphanies, where the protagonist realizes the role that he already played in history. Of course, Blood Omen established that history can in fact be changed - and we'll be respecting this precedent in Soul Reaver 2" - Amy Hennig at Legacy of Kain Funk Soul Brother (Official U.S PlayStation Magazine)
- ↑ "Initially, Raziel naively believes that history is fragile and may be altered easily. He gradually comes to understand, however, that there's a 'conservation of reality' at work, and that history is essentially immutable--that it requires a kind of 'temporal wildcard' to change its course. Raziel ultimately realizes that his comprehension of Nosgoth's multilayered, twisted past is much more limited than he initially believed. He also discovers that he continues to be manipulated by others who understand Nosgoth's history--and the nature of time--better than he does." - Andrew Bennett in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 Feature preview at GameStop
- ↑ "If Ariel enters the Reaver in the BO era, does this alter the events of Soul Reaver?" "No. Time in the world of Legacy of Kain is basically immutable - those who travel through it can't change history, because they didn't. Jen, Richard, and Kyle mention the film 12 Monkeys at this point as an example of this concept. While some things (like Ariel's role at the Spirit Forge) might seem out of place, it will all make sense in the end." - Question and Answer with Jen, Richard, and Kyle at the Lost Worlds
- ↑ "Why did Raziel purify the future Kain, instead of going back a few minutes through time, before Kain refused the pillars and after he killed Hash, wouldn't that have fixed everything?" "This goes back to our belief in the constant view that you cannot change history 'because you didn't' as shown in 12 Monkeys. If we run through the events you can see that purifying past Kain rather than Future Kain would have added a extremely fatal paradox into the time stream that would probably have expulsed Raziel all together if he tried to enact it by crossing two Soul Reavers. If past Kain is purified than the purification of the Pillars themselves would have changed the course of history most certainly eliminating all the events that led up to the remaking of Raziel all together. If that event does not happen then all the events that led Raziel to eventually purify BO1 Kain would never have happened thus making the purification itself a paradox. A change of this magnitude would probably, as stated in SR2, just expunge the irritant completely from history thus in the end ruining all of Kain and Raziel's efforts. Therefore only future Kain can be restored." - Jennifer Fernández and Richard Lemandchard at Eidos Forum

Yes, Raziel is shrouded from us, but we see the ripples of his potential actions. And every path he might choose leads to the same outcome: he will kill you, Kain." - Legacy of Kain Defiance
- ↑ "The Elder God can't force Raziel to follow his will; no one can. This is why everyone seeks to fool, trick and manipulate Raziel. Moebius feigns surprise and fear for a moment – RAZIEL (steely) "You can drop the benevolent facade, Moebius. I know who – and what – you are. I should kill you where you stand..." As Raziel speaks, Moebius's whole demeanor changes – he no longer appears to be an addled old magician. This Moebius is composed, confident, in control. He is completely unfazed by Raziel's physical threat – he knows exactly how history plays out, and thus has the composure of the omniscient. MOEBIUS (chuckles; his demeanor has changed completely) "Perhaps you should, my boy. But you don't." Raziel tightens his grip a bit on Moebius's throat. RAZIEL (icily) "Are you so certain of that, Moebius?" MOEBIUS (completely unfazed) "My role as Time Guardian affords me a certain level of omniscience, Raziel. (pause) No, you don't kill me. That honor belongs to your maker, Kain, some thirty years from now." - Soul Reaver 2 script page 2 and 3
- ↑ 266.0 266.1 Following Raziel's history-altering encounter with Kain in the Relic Hall, he returns to the Circle's meeting-room – now armed with the Light Reaver, Raziel can open the Time Streaming Device which has been sealed since the beginning of the game. Just as Raziel opens the TSD door, Moebius comes rushing into the room, looking shaken and alarmed. He thought he had successfully orchestrated Kain's murder at Raziel's hands, but now everything has gone horribly wrong. Kain and Raziel have managed to change the course of history – which means they both know about the Reaver-convergence which, up to now, Moebius believed was his little secret. Raziel turns to face Moebius, and begins walking slowly toward him, the Reaver still active and intentionally threatening.RAZIEL (cocky) "Ah, yes - I like that look on your face, Moebius. You really don't know what to do now, do you, old man? Here you are – caught without your damned staff - and I suspect things aren't progressing quite as you'd hoped. You're not used to the fly turning to confront you in your web, are you?" Moebius's distress is half-genuine, and a half an act. He is genuinely shocked by their alteration of history, and he's struggling to regain control of the situation. But he also knows precisely how history has reshuffled itself, and is deliberately appearing vulnerable here to let Raziel think he's in control. - Soul Reaver 2 Script page 43

He vows vengeance upon Mortanius and the fates that have caused this event, and turns his powerful magic to bear on the other members of the Circle of Nine. All across Nosgoth, the minds of the sensitive and intellectual are blasted by relentless waves of hatred. There is no stopping the assault. A telepathic blast bursts across the clearing with a thunderous rumble, and distorting waves of energy ripple across the landscape. Kain visibly tenses as he absorbs the onslaught of this psychic attack. The Pillars, initially white and pristine, begin to crack and then crumble as they turn gray with corruption. Kain begins to speak again as the telepathic assault recedes.KAIN "At the moment of my first cry, Ariel's beloved – the Guardian Nupraptor – finds her corpse. - ↑ "And just on the balance guardian, I get the role they played and understand the scions part but what specific powers did they have? Like how bane had power over nature and mortanius over death. What powers could the balance guardian use specifically?" "I always saw the Balance Guardian as being able to draw upon the other's abilities (or build up his/her own) in order to kill off any other guardian should they go astray" - Daniel Cabuco in "so many questions!" at DCabDesing
- ↑ "This scene depicted the appointment of the original Vampire guardians. Each summoned to serve when the Pillars were raised. Each Guardian is aligned to the principal of the Pillar he serves, and the Balance Guardian is the axis of them all". - Raziel. Legacy of Kain Defiance
- ↑ Q: Did Kain ever get a token (binding item) When he finally made his way to the pillars they were corrupt and incapable of giving him a binding item I would think. But this was interesting question I had to put it down. =) A: This is an important question (and brings up the major "inconsistency" complaint of the fans on the GameFAQs board). The Balance Guardian is different from the other Guardians -- he/she is the hub, the still point around which all the other Pillars principles turn. As such, the Balance Guardian does not have a traditional binding item. The Balance Guardian's very soul is the thing which binds him/her to the Pillar. - Amy Henning in "Warp Answers from Amy" at Eidos Forum
- ↑ "Reaching infinitely into the sky and deep into the earth, the Pillars are a manifestation of the mysterious power that preserves and gives life to the land. The nine ancient Pillars represent the principles of Mind, Dimension, Conflict, Nature, Energy, Time, States, Death, and - at the center, binding them all together - Balance." - Soul Reaver 2 Official Website by Eidos

- ↑ "With the creation of the Sarafan Lord and the concept of him having lead the reformed Sarafan armies to victory over Kain's vampire hordes, we could address the balance of the world a little and create a foe worthy of Kain. However, it was the idea of the Sarafan Lord leaving Kain for dead and claiming the Soul Reaver as his own that solved many design problems. The most powerful weapon in the LOK universe wasn't freely available, and Kain now had a very personal and driving purpose--retrieve the Reaver and settle his score with the Sarafan Lord!" - Blood Omen 2 Designer Diary #2 at GameStop 2002 by Mike Ellis

- ↑ "How much of his former (BO1) power does Kain still possess?" "I think you are referring to abilities? He's much more powerful than his BO version. He absorbed certain abilities to 'at will' levels of casting time, and discarded what he deemed unnecessary" - Daniel Cabuco in "Some more Questions" at DCabDesing
- ↑ "The Staff of Moebius was created during the time of the Ancient Vampires, when they were experimenting with Necromancy and Soul Stealing. The Orb itself was created within the forges of their Weaponsmiths and Necromancers (partially driven mad by the whispering Elder God) and imbued with the ability to possess the hearts of other Vampires. It's forged out of a giant Pearl, the only one in existence, and imbued with magics that made it crystal clear with a pearlescent blue finish. The snake represents the snuffing of the their hearts, as if paralyzed by venom, then slowly crushed and devoured. This is the pain Kain felt in his chest when he first encountered it, and why he was unable to even move despite being one of the strongest vampires to ever exist." - Daniel Cabuco in "Moebius's Staff" at DCabDesing

- ↑ VAMPIRE BRETHREN The majority of your enemies are your former vampire brethren. At the time of your execution there were five other clans besides yours, each led by a lieutenant. Within each clan there are several types of vampires. vampires are susceptible in varying degrees to sunlight, water, sound. fire and being impaled". - Soul Reaver 1 manual US version page 24
- ↑ "I knew my opponents' weaknesses, having suffered them myself. Physical wounds are fleeting – a vampire's immortal flesh begins to close as soon as it is cleaved. Vampires need only fear those wounds that impale, or inflame. Water scorches like acid, and fledglings are devastated by sunlight's touch" - Raziel. Soul Reaver 1 Cinematic script page 5

- ↑ "At first I thought all the Bretheren would be in cocoons, them mutate and emerge. But then, thinking about it.. I thought, "how boring!" So I called an audible, and decided to create this for Rahab. I imagine it would have started with him being burned by water, and drinking blood to heal. Being in a land with a lot of water, I'm sure he'd be somewhat bitter over the "land" he was given. Perhaps the humans who lived in the area found security by creating great waterfalls and moats, making him even more angry at their impudence. (They feel safe in MY LANDS, those cattle!) So I imagine he'd start draining blood while exposing himself to water more and more. Casting Kain's water breathing and protection spells so often that they'd weave themselves into his being. Taking one of Kain's gifts and turning it into his entire being.. Kain could only resist water temporarily.. but what if Rahab could actually ADAPT to it! He'd be so powerful and valuable.. he and his kind could go places others never could.. not even Raziel! That kind of motivation and jealousy strikes true with me. So he'd burn and heal, drink blood and immerse.. perhaps doing so at the same time (Telekinetically drinking) until the image I painted happened: The gills.. the GILLS! They symbolize his newfound power, one that he would present to Kain in court, to drive the others into jealousy and supplication to him." - Daniel Cabuco in "L.t Rahab Painting" at DCabDesing
- ↑ KAIN (laughs approvingly) "I knew you’d see through them, Raziel. Janos is indeed the key to your destiny, but you’ll need to find your own way back into Nosgoth’s past. Make no mistake though, Raziel - you and I are now in great danger. We are irritants here malevolent forces are being marshaled to eliminate us." RAZIEL "You talk as though we’re allies." KAIN "Regardless of your sentiments, Raziel, in their eyes - we are." RAZIEL "Well, they’re certainly trying to eliminate you, Kain, there can be no doubt of that. I am assaulted relentlessly with demands for your demise. Whatever it is that you’re plotting, they’ re scared to death of you. As for me, I suspect they made a grave error when they allowed my unique resurrection. I don’t think they know how to destroy me." KAIN (knows better) "You mustn’t underestimate them, Raziel." - Soul Reaver 2
