Description[]

Unordinary vs. My Hero Academia. Imitation is the best form of flattery unless it's done with the intent of bringing down other super powered beings.

Introduction[]

Wiz: John Doe, the Joker of Wellston Private High School.

Boomstick: Neito Monoma, the Phantom Thief of Class 1-B.

Wiz: Copying the powers of others may seem like a cheap strategy but in a world where everyone has awesome powers, it may be the only way to survive.

Boomstick: He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.

Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armour and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle.

John Doe[]

Wiz: "Everyone has something important to offer". This is a phrase in the book Unordinary, written by William Doe on the importance on using great responsibly. And you'd think that in a world filled with people who possess supernatural abilities it would be a message drilled into their heads instead of the one they've currently got.

Boomstick: Mainly, that nothing but your level of power determines your self-worth. And that all you are is a cog in a hierarchy. Even when almost everyone has a power, there are still gaps in outright strength that delegate a person's standing in society.

Wiz: Not even schools are exempt from this societal ruling and the same is true for Wellston Private. With fights between students breaking out, it's already a dangerous enough place without the higher-tiers picking on the lower-tiers with no threat of punishment.

Boomstick: Well, that's pretty much the same for any school. And caught up in the middle of it all, just trying to keep his head down, is the quote-on-quote cripple John Doe.

  • Background
    • Age: 17 or 18
    • Height: 5'11
    • The Joker and Shadow King of Wellston
    • Suffers from extreme anger issues

Wiz: In a world of superhumans, a cripple is a degrading term used to refer to people who lack an Ability. And being one, John is a prime target for the bullies and assholes who made my life-I mean his life, a living nightmare.

Boomstick: Him announcing it from the get-go immediately painted a target on his back but the thing was, he couldn't care in the slightest.

Wiz: It was this devil-may-care attitude that led him to befriend the most powerful student at Wellston, Seraphina, after she realized she could follow him example to get out of the thumb of society's expectations for one as strong as herself.

Boomstick: So with a best friend to protect him, not to mention being capable of avoiding getting killed at least it looked like he had everything sorted. Unfortunately for him, other people also began to take notice. Like Asslo, the hierarchy worshipping king of Wellston. Thanks to his machinations, it was revealed that John wasn't a cripple at all; he was a God-Tier Ability user. And there's nothing more God-Tier than being able to copy another person's ability.

  • Aura Manipulation
    • Enables the copying of other Abilities
    • Can sense other Auras
    • Can combine abilities
    • Copied Abilities
      • Barrier
      • Whirlwind
      • Demon Claw
      • Regeneration
      • Phase Shift
      • Hunter
      • Explosion
      • Energy Beam
      • Lightning

Wiz: Specifically, he can manipulate his own Aura in order to make it similar to those of other Ability users. This enables him to perfectly mimic their abilities, and then some, since his copied editions appear far stronger than the ones he originally copied.

Boomstick: With basically everyone having an Ability, this means John is a kid in a candy store in this regard. So far, he's copied at least 16 and there are probably more he's experience with.

Wiz: From Asslo, I mean Arlo, he copied his Barrier, a domed shield of energy he can use to protect himself or restrain others. From Blyke, he copied his Laser Beams and from Remi he copied her electricity emission.

Boomstick: Those three are all powerful Ability users, just like Isen, whose Hunter Ability is a bit unique. It allows the user to pinpoint the location of an opponent's weak spot and track them using it. It even adds a boost to speed and strength, enabling Isen to stop a speeding semi-truck with his bare hands.

Wiz: He's copied the Abilities that enable him to generate a whirlwind, throw out explosive balls of energy, turn his hands into claws, regenerate his injuries and make himself either hit harder or move faster.

Boomstick: And because of the technicalities of Aura Manipulation, he can stockpile four at a time and even combine some of them, such as by filling a tornado full of razor-sharp blades.

Wiz: However, Aura Manipulation does have a few drawbacks. One, he needs to actually be able to see a person's Aura in order to copy their abilities. This means certain Abilities are locked to him as long as they are passive in nature, such as the Ability to see the future. And two, if he turns off his ability, he loses all the ones he's copied, meaning he needs to at least visually see a person's Aura anytime he wants to copy their power. Fortunately for John though, he has ways to compensate.

Boomstick: He's pretty skilled in martial arts, possibly more-so than anyone we've seen so far. Some punk kid throwing a fist made of metal at his face? He'll redirect it and throw out his own haymaker and then flip him out of a window for good measure. And when he has an ability to empower himself with, he's pretty much unstoppable.

Wiz: Which wasn't exactly a good thing, considering what happened at his old school New Bostin. You see, John's ability didn't surface until after he had been relentless picked on for being so powerless, so when he finally got it, he went mad with power. Not even an assembly of other powerful students led by his former best friend where able to take him down.

Boomstick: It got so bad he had to be mind-screwed with overwhelming guilt and transferred, which is what led to his new persona at Wellston. But of course, it didn't last forever. Thanks to too much pushing, he snapped and reverted to his previous personality, even taking on the role of Joker to the other players at the school.

  • Feats
    • Has a God-Tier rank of 7.5
    • Fought low-tiers without using his ability
    • Mislead an ability user who could see the future
    • Caused several large explosions
    • Defeated his entire class
    • Broke Arlo's barrier
    • Defeated Arlo, Remi, Blyke, Isen

Wiz: Upon coming to believe the Hierarchy caused nothing but trouble, John immediately set about dismantling it. Remi, Blyke, Isen and even Arlo, all high ranking Ability users, didn't stand a chance against him even when it was four against one.

Boomstick: During one fight, John caused a fairly big explosion, worth about 20 megajoules. And a character with a lower ranking than him even busted up a stone ground pretty hard, and that's worth 6 billion joules.

Wiz: It's worth mentioning that the gap between the different Tiers is fairly large. It has been said that a single elite tier, like the boy who smashed the ground up, is capable of fighting tens of mid tiers and come out of it still battle ready and as said before John ranks well above the likes of him.

Boomstick: His official file even reads like a goddamn SCP warning, advising that nobody activates their ability around him. In a world of supernatural abilities for him to copy, John's pretty much broken.

Wiz: Unfortunately, not just in power. You see, John's trials and punishments have given a few mental issues. Mainly, he just cannot control himself if he gets riled up. Sure he's still an efficient fighter but his restraint goes right out of the window, leading him to pretty much brutalize anyone who he perceives as crossing him. And for a long while, he thought everyone was crossing him, even Seraphina. But eventually, she was able to bring his rampage to a halt by forcing him to confront his issues and get on the path of betterment.

Boomstick: Symbolized by his hair, being a combination of his wild darker side's and that god-awful tamed helmet.

Wiz: Well, no-one can say that John Doe is an ordinary person.

Neito Monoma[]

Wiz: The school of UA High is a location where a common childhood aspiration can be reached; the chance to become a superhero. Although the possibilities of such are made all the more easier thanks to 70% of the population possessing a unique power, or Quirk, although the various institutions for superhero training are intended to help aspiring youths harness their abilities to their fullest.

Boomstick: And UA is no different, especially since it's ranked number one out of all of its kind. And the collection of students considered the very best of the best of the next generation is Class 1-A. You know, the one with everyone's favorite students in.

Wiz: Of course, it's not the only class in UA to be focused on the next generation of heroes, although the other one, Class 1-B, doesn't get as much attention or praise as they do. Still, a lot of them are actually fairly okay with it. Well, with the exception of one.

Boomstick: Yeah, Neito Monoma is pretty much the epitome of Tall Poppy Syndrome, especially with being in a class who are constantly overshadowed by all of 1-A.

  • Background
    • Age: 16
    • Height: 5'7
    • AKA Phantom Thief
    • Student in Class 1-B
    • Incredibly envious of Class 1-A
    • Needs to be karate-chopped a lot

Wiz: From his usual appearances heckling 1-A for any little thing, even if it's practically non-existent, it's easy to imagine that there is something a little off by Neito, although surprisingly, he's actually not that bad.

Boomstick: He's an alright bloke to his fellow classmates and technically speaking, doesn't have villainous bone in his body. He can be a bit of a jackass but that's as far he'd usually go. After all, he does aspire to be a hero, although there have been people in his past who didn't believe he would amount to this.

Wiz: It had nothing to do with his personality, which some of you out there may suspect. No, it's because amongst Quirks, his own wasn't exactly held with high esteem.

Boomstick: Which is utterly ridiculous if you ask me. After all, I'm pretty sure most superhumans would give an arm or a leg to be able to copy the powers of others.

  • Quirk
    • Dubbed 'Copy'
    • Allows him to copy the Quirks of those he touches
    • Can maintain them for 10 minutes
    • Can store up to four at a time
    • Copied Quirks
      • Explosion
      • Hardening
      • Scales
      • Twin Impact
      • Tape
      • Half-Cold Half-Hot
      • Solid Air
      • Poltergeist
      • Softening
      • Size

Wiz: Dubbed Copy, this Quirk does exactly what it says it does; enables Neito to copy the Quirk of whoever he comes into contact with.

Boomstick: Physical contact you say? Sounds like the kind of quirk Mineta really would give a leg for, if you know what I mean...

Wiz: Copy enables Neito to not just copy one Quirk but store up to four at a time, freely changing between them on the fly. Whilst each Quirk can only be retained for ten minutes individually, Neito is well aware of his time-limits, so he always carries on his person several stopwatches to time each one. And when he does have them, he makes sure to use them to their fullest extent.

Boomstick: He's amassed himself a sizeable list of copied Quirks. He's copied Bakugou's Explosions, enabling him turn his sweat into Napalm to make small fiery blasts and the Quirk of a Spider-Man wannabe who can shoot tape from his arms.

Wiz: Also from a Class 1-A student, Neito's copied gotten Hardening, which strengths his limbs into a near unbreakable defense. Scales from Hiryu Rin are pretty much the same thing but they can also be launched of projectiles. And speaking of which, there's no better source of Quirks for Neito to repurpose than his fellow classmates of 1-B.

Boomstick: There are Quirks that enable one to resize inanimate objects, send them floating out like projectiles or turn them, along with an entire surface, soft and bouncy. Or he can repurpose his breath into a shield with Solid Air.

Wiz: One of the most notable Quirks Neito took the time to get acquainted with is Twin Impact, copied from Nirengeki Shoda. A rather unusual Quirk, what it entails is the user delivering a normally powered attack to their opponents before activating the effects of Twin Impact, which not only causes the effect of the attack to be repeated but its power to be increased.

Boomstick: That's a strange yet useful ability, because that second impact can be activated at any time from any distance. He's even copied the power of Erasure from a AU teacher, which enables him to nullify someone's Quirk so long as he is looking at them.

Popup: It was hypothesized that Neito also copied the Brainwashing Quirk but that was purely speculative based on Hitoshi Shinso being temporarily on the same team as him.

Wiz: But like any ability that has the potential to be a game breaker, Copy still has a drawback. Mainly, that he cannot make use of a Quirk that requires a secondary to use. Take for example the famous One For All, which is specifically a power stockpiling Quirk meant to give the next user the strength of past users. Since Neito does not have the stockpiled power within himself, he is unable to effectively harness it's full capabilities in spite of technically gaining the Quirk's capability. But whilst the time and physical limitations can be a bother, Neito can be formidable when he wants to be.

  • Feats
    • Possesses an A+ in Technique and Intelligence
    • Intercepted Bakugou's attack
    • Deduced Ochaco's strategy
    • Made it through the Sport Festival's minefield
    • Knocked 8% Deku around with Twin Impact
    • Used Hardening to block an Explosion
    • Dodged Izuku's Blackwhip

Boomstick: His first major showing was during the UA Sports Festival. In it, he was able to make it through a racetrack that was literally littered with mines, each one packing a yield of 800 kilojoules of energy (TheRustyOne).

Wiz: He was able able to intercept an attack from Bakugou, copying his Quirk in the process. The same Bakugou...

Boomstick: Who was killed by Genos?

Wiz: Well, yes, but I was talking about how he defeated the wielder of Black Shadow, a living Quirk fast enough to intercept electricity.

Boomstick: Oh yeah, that. Neito is surprisingly agile and was able to later dodge the wild whippings of Izuku's latest power, Blackwhip, not to mention recover from Ochaco's sweet judo flip. This all happened during the matches between Classes 1-A and 1-B, where he really got show off his scheming skillset.

Wiz: In fact, it has been said that whilst Class 1-A was able to home themselves thanks to getting caught up in the activates of various villains, Class 1-B was able to dedicate all their time to bringing out their full potential, making the two classes a near-match for each other.

Boomstick: Not to mention Neito himself was able to knock around Izuku with Twin Impact.

Wiz: A VS wiki image outlines that Izuku at the time was using 8% of his power, which is an output of 8 tons of TNT and Twin Impact is an increase in power of Neito's initial strike on him. In order for it to have gotten powerful enough to stagger Izuku, Neito's level of strength must be at most 2 tons of TNT. It can be easy to underestimate Neito at times, especially with his hated obsession of 1-A but he's more insightful than he seems. Such as with the knowledge that with his kind of power, he's not destined to be the main character of this story.

Boomstick: But that won't stop from neither preaching about nor aiming to reach superiority over Class 1-A. No matter how many whacks to the back of the head he needs.

Interlude[]

Wiz: Alright the combatants are set, time to end this debate once and for all.

Boomstick: It's time for a Death Battle!

The Battle[]

Setting: Unordinary's Turf War area

Hands in his pockets, John stalked towards the center of the flat lands, where Neito Monoma was waiting.

John: Alright, I got your damn message, now what do you want?

Neito: Isn't it obvious? I'm here to best you in combat!

Neito suddenly grinned manically and spread his arms out.

Neito: I am here to prove that I can show up Class 1-A by beating the infamous Joker of Wellston! A feat none of them have even considered! That will prove I'm better hero material than all of them!

John just stood there, incredulous at Neito's behavior before groaning.

John: Freaking lunatic...came out all the way here for noth-

The second he looked back at Neito, the UA student was lunging at him with his hand outstretch towards his face.

FIGHT!

John instantly switched onto the initiated fight, quickly bringing his hand up to swat away Neito's arm before its hand could reach his face. Then, with Neito's momentum bringing him forwards, John swung his fist out and punch him in the face. Neito reeled back in an instance and John followed it up by bounding forwards and slamming his knee into Neito's chest. Neito gagged against the blow but still had enough bodily control to try and make another grab at John's face. John darted his head to the side to avoid the hand, grabbed the arm it belonged to, swept out his foot to knock one of Neito's out from under him and tossed him over his shoulder. With surprisingly nimbleness, Neito spun himself around in the air to land on his feet. Once again, with an addition dart to the side, Neito charged at John, who switch on his Aura vision in the process. The Wellston student frowned when he saw nothing of the sort but turned his focus back to Neito when he made a third attempt to grab his face. He dodged to the side, gritting his teeth in anger.

John: Will you stop trying to fucking touch me?!

Neito: Hmm...maybe I should. Luckily, I have other means of besting you.

He checked out of the watches on his belt.

Neito: Hmm...three minutes on each. Perfect.

John threw out a punch, only for it to crack against the scales that Neito suddenly grew on his arm using the specific Quirk. John bit back a cry at his knuckles where cut against the hard surface before Neito kicked him in the chest. As John stumbled back, Neito swiped his arm out to send scales shooting out from his arm as projectiles. John crossed his arms over his face to protect it from the sharp projectile.

Neito: Ha! Fall to the might of my copied powers.

John: You first.

His eyes glowed yellow and orbs of red energy appeared in his hands. As more scales shot towards him, John unleashed laser beams from his hands, sweeping them out to cut them down before they could reach him. He then fired a twin stream at Neito. who rolled to the side and leaving the coattails of his costume with burnt holes in them. Neito got into a kneeling position, throwing out several more scales that John dodged to the side of before using the laser ability to propel himself forwards. He turned them off and still with momentum, John threw out a punch that packed enough of a punch so that even when Neito blocked it with a scaled arm, he was still sent stumbling backwards. Once John landed, Neito recovered his footing and threw out a punch that John met with his own, the two fists colliding together.

In John's case, his punch was amplified by Hunter and as the young men's fists grinded together, John used the ability to take note of where the Scales didn't cover. So he pulled away his fist before slamming it into Neito's chest, a place where he was still vulnerable. The blow was powerful enough to make a drop of blood fly from Neito's mouth and John followed it up with newly speed up punches that sent Neito skidding on his back across the ground. When he was able to open his eyes against the pain, Neito saw John in the air, falling towards him with his fist drawn back. Neito rolled to the side to avoid the attack, which proved powerful enough to crack the ground and turn a section of it into pieces. Seeing an opportunity, Neito tapped into another Quirk, Poltergeist, and touched the rubble pieces, making them shoot upwards at John. The ones that didn't miss and go straight up into the air collided with John, cracking him all over his body. He grunted and winced against the barrage, and as he attempted to guard again the projectiles coming from below, he glared at Neito.

John: You son of a bitch!

He summoned up black electricity and sent currents of it shooting towards Neito, striking him head on and sending him flying backwards. John jumped towards him before he could get too far, grabbed his leg and sent electricity coursing through his body before tossing him back in the other direction. Neito hit the ground and grunted in pain but was still able to slink back to his feet. He retreated backwards, panting slightly as John cracked his knuckles and stalked after him.

John: Trying to run now?

Neito: Oh no, I just needed to get you back in that position.

One of Neito's watches suddenly beeped, showcasing the end of his usage of Poltergeist. In accordance, all the pieces of rubble levitated into the air started raining down, John only become aware of them when he noticed the various shadows now dotting the ground. He looked upwards to see the falling pieces of stone, which were descending fast enough to start heating up. John was only fast enough to avoid two of them before he had to resort to using Arlo's Barrier to protect himself, letting the falling rocks smash against it. With John pinned by the falling barrage, Neito darted forwards and slapped his hand onto the Barrier. John scoffed at his effort.

John: Was that meant to hurt?

Neito: Oh no...but this is!

He tapped onto the power of Twin Impact and a blast of force slammed into the Barrier, cracking it. John instantly spat out blood as he felt the damage reverberate through him. He was forced to remove the Barrier, but this proved problematic for him as Neito lunged forwards and struck him across the face before instantly activating Double Impact, sending John flying backwards. Even he went however, John was able to aim his hand up and fire a laser from his hand, which was also electrified thanks to combining the two powers. It hit Neito directly in his side, leaving a bloodied shallow hole that made him cry out in pain. John, meanwhile, brought his feet down onto the ground and skidded to a halt before charging back towards Neito. As soon as the latter looked back up, the former struck him across the cheek, before his collar was grabbed and his face was subjected to a series of vicious punches.

John: This is what you get! Nobody crosses me without paying for it!

Neito: In that case, consider this my payment!

He thrusted his hand up into John's chest and tapped into Bakugou's Explosion, sending the Wellston student backwards with a grunt of shock and a scorched shirt. When he finally brought his stumbling to a stop, Neito thrusted his hand out at his face and unleashed another blast, once against making John stumble backwards blindly. Over and over again, Neito battered John with small explosions.

Neito: At least 1-A is useful for something!

After leaving John stunned and dizzied with his barrage of blasts, he drew back both his hands before thrusting them out, intending to unleash a double blast that he estimated would end the fight. However, that was the moment the Quirk's time in his body ran out and all that came out was a paltry spark.

Neito: Oh dear. Well, no matter, because I still have another place to attain a Quirk from!

With John still dizzied, Neito grabbed him by the face. John got his bearings back and looked at the hand holding his face before glaring at Neito, who slowly realized he couldn't draw a Quirk from John.

Neito: Oh dear...

His worry was well warranted as John socked him across the face, sending him reeling backwards before he was enclosed inside of a Barrier, him only realizing when there was nothing he could do about it. John added an addition feature to it thanks to the Laser ability, and the inside of the dome was filled with a multitude of laser beams that pierced through practically every area of Neito's body, including his vitals, which John targeted with Hunter. Neito was killed in an instance, his rigid body bleeding out of every hole as he titled forwards. He slammed onto the stone ground, sending blood splattering out in every direction. John tucked his hands in his pockets and turned away with a huff.

John: Like I said, that's what you get.

KO!

Itsuka Kendo wandered onto the battlegrounds, ready to chop Neito unconscious if need be, and recoiled at the sight of his corpse.

Outcome[]

Boomstick: Too bad for Neito, looks like it isn't just Class 1-A who overshadows him.

Wiz: Indeed, although not without a very complex battle, especially in regards to the natures of their respective power-copying skills. Although it was fairly obvious that neither could copy each others powers.

Boomstick: John's Aura Manipulation relied on being able to manipulate a person's exposed Aura, which Quirk's don't operate on, and obviously a Quirk and a capital A Ability aren't the same thing so Neito couldn't get anything from John. Even with the power sets they had both saved up. Which, by the way, whilst they could only store up four, John's skill to combine them together gave him the edge in versatility.

Wiz: Neito also had another issue with his copy-Quirk. Namely, he could only copy the basis of the power, not what was supplied to it to make it work. Even if he could copy John's Aura Manipulation, he wouldn't get any of the Abilities it had currently mimicked. But there is far more to discuss than all this. What we had to look at was in truth probability. You see, since John and Neito had limits to how long they could retain copied powers, we had to determine which drawback would most hinder one's chances of victory.

Boomstick: Neito's weakness is that he can only keep each Quirk for 10 minutes so the clock was obviously against him. But in comparison, John's copied Abilities are only lost when he directly turns off his ability. He has shown he can keep them for as long as he wants this way, even when travelling to a location that is at least a few blocks away from Wellston.

Wiz: Further considering that all John needs to do is watch someone activate their Ability to copy it compared to Neito who actually needs to touch someone, and how John always thinks about what Abilities he may need to use in the future, you have better odds of John walking into a fight with Abilities at the ready than Neito does with copied Quirks. Even scenarios of Neito getting just the right or powerful enough Quirks are still countered by their general behavioral and ability-traits. Plus, we can't put them in one location that would benefit only one of the two by having tons of people with the power types they copy, like their respective schools.

Boomstick: Even if they both came to this fight without any copied powers each, John has proven he's perfectly capable of brutalizing a person with his bare hands. Plus, he's the only one of the two who actually has close-quarters combat expertise, giving him another leg up on Neito.

Popup: In terms of speed, both can scale to those who use and have reacted to electricity in battle.

Wiz: Going back to the theme of circumstance real quick, considering he is most likely to get a usable Quirk from his fellow 1-B classmates, then he could get his hands on Twin Impact. It's increase in power was enough to harm Izuku at 8% of his power, who could output at most 8 tons of TNT (TheRustyOne) and Neito himself is at most 4 times weaker than that. However, it has been said and demonstrated there is a massive gap in strength between Tier Classes in Unordinary. An Elite Tier is said to be able to beat tens of mid-tiers with ease and the same principle should be applicable to the other ranks. As John sits on God Tier, above two other whole classes to Elite Tier, we should be able to apply the same track record of power difference. Meaning, with lowballing "tens of" as meaning 15, John's strength should sit at, ironically, 15 tons of TNT. Or at least that's the level his Abilities can get to outputting.

Popup: This is a similar level of power by applying this multiplier to Remi's lightning, which should have the same yield as real lightning.

Boomstick: And don't forget him beating on those just below him in High-Tier, who are certainly stronger than Neito's base strength based off our Tier multiplier, with his bare hands. And when it came to smarts, John's own analytical mind would help him keep up with Neito's strategic one.

Popup: Whilst John struggled against lower tiers early on, this was only due to him suppressing his power. Some of them he was still able to bruise and bloody whilst pretending to be a cripple, and he was still able to withstand their beatings with any fatal injuries. Another lower ranked ability user was able to generate tremors to shake buildings throughout a city.

Wiz: Quite frankly, this was a hard to define outcome, but the flexibility of John's Aura Manipulation, his tactical way of thinking, higher level of strength and better fighting skills made him the best user of what wasn't his.

Boomstick: He 1-Because he was extraordinary.

Wiz: The winner is John Doe.

Trivia[]

  • Connections: Both are high-school students at super-power focused schools (Wellston High and UA High, respectively) with supernatural powers that enable them to copy the powers of other superhuman individuals (Aura Manipulation and Copy, respectively). Both also carry grudges against those who are ranked higher in a certain school hierarchy than they are (High Tiers and Class 1-A, respectively) though have since learned to temper them.
  • Animation Style: Hand-drawn.
  • OST Idea: 'Unordinary Thieves', referring to John's series, Neito's codename and how both copy the powers of others.
