History[]

At the dawn when martial arts was at it's peak in Foshan, Southern China, Ip Man (alternatively spelled Yip Man) was at the forefront back when Foshan's martial artists began to emerge from the top. Unfortunately, unlike most martial artists, Ip Man was quiet, reserved and unassuming, preferring to train by himself and hang out with friends, much to the disappointment of his more on-going wife. However, things would change for the better, as Northerners soon ploughed into Foshan, triumphing even the best Southern martial artist masters. At their request, Ip Man intervened by beating their leader and master who planned to open a school in Foshan. But it was far from over, for the Japanese had arrived, and had occupied China. Unwittingly, Ip Man became the front of the Chinese resistance in Foshan by challenging General Miura, the occupation's martial arts master in combat. He defeated Miura in fair combat, but was shot at the back by his cowardly second in command. He survived and recovered afterward.

In the next flim, having grown a reputation amongst many as one of China's grandmasters of martial arts, Ip Man attempts to expand his martial arts while keeping his family safe despite tensions between him and his son, Ip Ching. At one time, he was approached by a young Bruce Lee, but refused to train the boy as he was too young to apply in his school. To open up a school in Hong Kong, Ip Man defeated Hong Kong's grandmasters, but was not able to overcome Master Hung. Out of respect for Ip Man, Hung allowed Ip to open a school in Hong Kong. However, Hung was later killed by the racist boxer Twister, who came from Britain to showcase British superiority over Chinese martial arts. Seeing that the integrity of kung fu is at stake by a westerner, Ip Man challenges Twister to a battle, and fought him on even odds, but to give Twister an advantage, the ruling circle forbade kicks. Unfortunately for the British, despite the rules restricting Ip Man, he was still able to overcome Twister and beat him, then threw off a standing ovation to remind the Chinese what Hung had died for.

In Ip Man 3, after kicking out a grown up Bruce Lee despite the latter's skill and speed out of indecisiveness, Ip Man returns to his quiet and unassuming lifestyle, with his eldest son, Ip Ching returning to Foshan, leaving him with his youngest son and wife. However, when his family gets into trouble following a school fight, Ip Man attempts to apologize by inviting the Fong family to dinner, only to find out the Fong patriarch is as skilled in Wing Chun as he is. However, following his attempt to pick up his son, Ip Man finds out that the school his son is studying in is under threat of redevelopment, and so, to prevent this, he confronts Frank, the property developer attempting to buy the school. However, things did not go better for Ip Man, as he rescues his child from thugs from triad boss Ma King-sang, sent by Frank himself, then finds out his wife is diagnosed with cancer. On their way to buy medicine, they are attacked by a Muay Thai boxer, whom Ip Man easily repels. Ip Man then attempts to confront Frank himself and survives fighting him for three minutes. Impressed, Frank withdraws his claim. However, Cheung tin-chi, jealous of Ip Man, attempts to challenge him, but the latter spends more time with his family than training, attending to his dying wife. He later accepted Bruce Lee as his own student after the latter taught him how to dance. Encouraged by his wife to fight for his family, Ip Man accepts the challenge Tin-chi gave him. After a brutal battle, Tin-chi renounces his claim as Wing Chun Grandmaster. Ip Man's wife eventually dies afterwards, leaving Ip Man alone to raise his son.

In Ip Man 4, the finale, after his son is expelled for fighting, Ip Man travels to America to find more study opportunities, but finds himself dying as well, by cancer. After Bruce Lee attempted to open up a Wing Chun school in San Francisco, Ip Man reluctantly moves in there to find a school for his son... but finds out that the Chinese martial arts schools being opened are faced with rampant discrimination by racist Americans. Seeing that the martial arts schools are under attack by American karetekas, and struggling with his deteriorating health condition, Ip Man steps forward to defend the integrity of Chinese martial arts opening in a foreign country not either China or Hong Kong. After defeating Baron Geddes in a close battle, Ip Man decides against moving to America, seeing that his son wants to learn Wing Chun. Although worn down, Ip Man nonetheless trains him to be a Wing Chun teacher. He died in 1972 to his cancer, roughly seven months after Bruce Lee's death.

Nonetheless, the legacy of Ip Man has been carried out to his sons and the United States Marine Corps, who adopted Chinese martial arts in their training drills.
