Description[]
Description: Hunter vs. Lena Sabrewing. Two magic users who were created to serve another evil magic user that they later turned against and discover their own power.
Introduction[]
Wiz: Magic can be used for an assortment of different things, and sometimes that can include creating life.
Boomstick: It just sucks that when your creator is a power-hungry psycho who uses you for their own gain.
Wiz: Hunter, the former Golden Guard, created as a magic clone of the evil Emperor Belos’ brother.
Boomstick: And Lena Sabrewing, the living shadow of the evil witch, Magic De Spell. He’s Wiz, and I’m Boomstick.
Wiz: And it’s our job to analyze their powers, skills, and abilities to find out who would win a Death Battle.
Hunter[]
Wiz: The idea of a multiverse isn’t a new one. In fact, many series and franchises operate on the idea of there being multiple worlds across an infinite number of alternate dimensions and universes.
Boomstick: Yeah, but I bet not many of those worlds are formed from the rotting corpse of a giant Titan that’s so big it makes Godzilla look downright tiny.
Wiz: These are the Boiling Isles, a country-sized island made of, yes, the remains of a deceased godly being known as a Titan located in the demon realm, from which new life manifested, evolved, and learned to utilize magic from. In modern times, this realm is ruled over with an iron fist by the evil Emperor Belos, the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles.
Boomstick: And the head of his royal guards is this guy, Hunter. More commonly known as the Golden Guard.
- Background
- Full name: Hunter Deamonne
- Also known as The Golden Guard and RULERZREACHF4N
- Age: 16 (later 20)
- Height: 6’0
- Race: Genetic clone/Grimwalker of Caleb Wittebane
- Homeworld: The Boiling Isles
- The “nephew” of Emperor Belos
- Related to the Clawthornes via genetic material
- Has a rivalry with Kikimora
- Adoptive/surrogate son of Darius Deamonne
- Likes wolves, Palismen carving, flyer derby, Cosmic Frontier
- Former leader of the Emperor’s Coven
- Considered a witch prodigy
Wiz: Known for being a magical prodigy, Hunter acts largely in part as Belos’ righthand man, and is, in fact, the emperor’s nephew. Well, more or less. But despite this status, Hunter really hasn’t lived the best of lives.
Boomstick: Oh, man, if you sympathize with Zuko from Avatar, strap yourselves in for this poor sap. His backstory is… yeesh, it’s messed up.
Wiz: Sheltered and propped up for most of his life, Hunter was forced to train vigorously to become as skilled as possible, and has devoted his life to Belos and carrying out his commands, largely making sure any wild witches joined covens and swore allegiance to the emperor, or faced punishment if they didn’t.
Boomstick: Yeah, about that, why were they all called witches? Aren’t witches girls and boys wizards, or warlocks, or something?
Wiz: Actually, Boomstick, in olden times, all practitioners of magic were referred to as witches, regardless of their gender. Terms like wizards and warlocks didn’t come around until later, and The Owl House seems to follow this traditional reference to magic users.
Boomstick: Even those like Hunter? Because the guy couldn’t actually use magic on his own. He had to rely on his science-y fake magic staff thing.
Wiz: This is true. Born a powerless witch, Hunter was brought up by Belos and given an artificial magic staff that enabled him to perform magic, even without the magic bile sack that other witches have attached to their hearts that allows them to perform magic.
Boomstick: You heard that right, magic literally comes from the heart in this series. Honestly though, that just looks nasty.
Wiz: Led to believe that witches who practice wild magic, basically those who haven’t joined a coven, are dangerous and were the ones who wiped out his family, Hunter dedicated himself to Belos’ cause of having all witches join a coven in time for the Day of Unity, a day that was meant to unite everyone with the Titan.
Boomstick: But when are things ever the way they seem? Turns out that pretty much everything Belos ever told, well, everyone, was a bunch of lies. The guy wasn’t even a witch at all. He was a human who fell into the demon realm during the 1600s. And we all know what happened back then. Yup, witch hunting trials.
Wiz: After a series of… mishaps, Hunter accidentally ended up entering his uncle’s mind, and that’s where he learned some… rather unpleasant truths.
Boomstick: Pfft, yeah, unpleasant. Like finding out that Berlos was actually this guy, Philip Wittebane, who is really a freakin’ witch hunter that planned on committing mass genocide of all witches on the Day of Unity. Yeah, it was pretty messed up.
Wiz: Put perhaps what was most traumatizing for Hunter was learning that he wasn’t actually Belos’ nephew, but something that’s known as a Grimwalker.
Boomstick: Basically a magical clone of Belos’ brother, Caleb, who Belos actually killed himself.
Wiz: Well, not a clone exactly, as Grimwalkers aren’t exact copies. Belos himself even comments that out of all the Grimwalkers he created that Hunter looked the most like his brother.
Boomstick: Yup, you heard that right. Belos created several Grimwalkers before Hunter. Like dozens, maybe even hundreds. We even saw an entire graveyard of past Golden Guards of other Grimwalkers that Belos killed.
Wiz: Based on the legend of the Wittebane Brothers, Caleb met and fell in love with the witch, Evelyn, who is actually the ancestor of the Clawthornes. Belos considered this a betrayal and murdered his brother, and then began creating Grimwalkers to replace him.
Boomstick: Yeah, but apparently all of them turned against him at some point, probably when they found out what a deranged psychopath he was. So he just killed them, created another, and then possessed their corpses in order to get a new body, which was how he survived for so long. Man, that is all kinds of screwed up.
Wiz: Upon learning of his origins and what his uncle was planning, Hunter fled from his post as the leader of the Emperor’s Coven, knowing that Belos would hunt him down and kill him for what he discovered and not being on board with it. He then joined up with those he once considered his enemies in order to put a stop to Belos’ plans of genocide.
Boomstick: And he certainly brought a lot to the table. He was a prodigy after all.
- Powers and Abilities
- Palisman (Flapjack and Waffles)
- Glyph magic (combining light, ice, plant, fire)
- Artificial magic staff
- Flight (with magic staves)
- Advanced hand-to-hand combat
- Knowledge of magic
- Various magic spells
- Beams of magic
- Resistance to possession
- Magic dashing/agility
- Teleportation
- Palismen carving
- Telekinesis
- Water and Earth magic
- Athleticism
Wiz: Hunter has indeed proven to be quite skilled. Not just in the use of magic, but also in hand-to-hand combat.
Boomstick: Well, no kidding. Did you hear the type of training he had to go through to become the Golden Guard? He actually considered being abandoned at the top of a mountain and needing to find his way back to be a ‘classic’. Makes you wonder what he actually considered to be hard.
Wiz: However, since Caleb was Hunter’s genetic material that he was created from, despite being a prodigy, Hunter couldn’t actually use magic on his own since humans don’t possess magic. Instead, he had to rely on an artificial staff Belos gave him in order to cast spells.
Boomstick: At least until he met his Palisman, Flapjack, who was actually implied to have originally been Caleb’s. Aww, he’s adorable. I’m already attached.
Wiz: Palismen are magical creatures created from Palistrom wood. They act as a cross between familiars and magic wands, only they transform into staves instead. And with Flapjack by his side, Hunter was able to use magic through him.
Boomstick: And since he was a member of the Emperor’s Coven, he was able to use all kinds of magic. Oh, right, see, anyone who joined a particular coven other than the one that directly served Belos had the rest of their magic sealed away.
Wiz: Among the nine main coven systems, Hunter has displayed the use of magic from several of them. This has ranged from firing blasts of magic in order to attack, to manipulating the environment around him, to even creating matter out of thin air.
Boomstick: Like this sword that seemed to be made of flesh and bones. I gotta say though, Wiz, as awesome as all that sounds, I want to learn how to fly around on one of those staves. That Flyer Derby game looks a hell of a lot more fun than Quidditch, and it doesn’t have that dumb rule with the Golden Snitch, or Rusty Smidge, or whatever that instant win cheat is. Seriously, what kind of BS is that!?
Wiz: Out of the various displays of magic Hunter has been seen performing, he seems to specialize in what I suppose could be considered magical dashing. This can range from rapidly moving from one spot to the next to even teleporting short distances.
Boomstick: Oh, hell yeah! Forget the flying staff thing, Hunter can move so fast that he can basically fly by dashing from one spot to the next even when he’s in the air. But if he wants to straight up teleport long distances, he can use glyph magic.
Wiz: The use of glyphs is another magical skillset that Hunter eventually learns to use. It’s considered a primitive form of magic that comes from the Boiling Isles itself. By drawing these glyphs, with the strength of the spell depending on the size, even those without magic are able to command the magic around them.
Boomstick: So basically, there are these four different glyphs of light, ice, plant, and fire. Not the ones you’d expect to be the primary source, but whatever. If you make the right combination with them, you can actually perform any spell.
Wiz: And trust me, there’s a lot of them. These spells can range from putting people to sleep, entering a person’s mind, causing petrification, turning things invisible, and more. They essentially allow the user of the glyphs to access the very power of the Titan himself, which is so great that it’s even capable of canceling out the god-level magic of the Collector.
Boomstick: And that guy could move the freakin’ moon with a finger swipe like he was passing up on some loser on a dating app. So you know the Titan must be pretty damn powerful.
Wiz: But while Hunter does utilize the power of glyphs, he primarily relied on the use of his Palisman to perform magic. Well… that is, until it happened.
Boomstick: Wait, no, Wiz, you’re not going to… No, don’t say it! It’s too traumatizing!
Wiz: Sorry, Boomstick, but as tragic as it is, it did happen. After both Flapjack and Hunter were fatally wounded by Belos, Flapjack gave his life in order to save Hunter’s.
Boomstick: No! Why, Flapjack!? Why!? Damn you, Belos! Hasn’t Hunter suffered enough!?
Wiz: Um, there, there, Boomstick. But just remember, as tragic as it was, there was a bit of a silver lining that came out of it.
Boomstick: No, screw you, Wiz! It doesn’t matter if Hunter gained Flapjack’s magic and could now perform it on his own! Give him back! Give Hunter back his li’l rascal!
Wiz: *Sigh* Yes, as heartbreaking as it was, Hunter did end up losing Flapjack, who was his best friend and first real friend. After Belos possessed him, Hunter was left mortally damaged, and Flapjack gave his life in order to save Hunter’s. Not just save him, but actually transfer his magic to him in the process, essentially turning Hunter into a real witch.
Boomstick: He even gained Flapjack’s eye color and inherited his scars to add on to the ones he already had. Hehe, I think his girlfriend, Willow, might be into them. Badass scars to go with the badass way he managed to purge Belos from his body.
- Feats
- Became the leader of the Emperor’s Coven
- Survived a blast of magic to the face
- Immediately mastered the use of a Palisman
- Fought Abomination prodigy Amity and King to a draw while exhausted
- Immediately mastered Flyer Derby
- Helped uncover Belos’ plans
- Broke free after being devoured by Belos’ mindscape
- Fought Belos in his true form while being drained of his life
- Broke free of Willow’s magic vine prison
Wiz: Which must have taken a great deal of effort considering Belos is an accomplished possessor and the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles. But as we said, Hunter is considered a prodigy.
Boomstick: He’s not the only one though. Amity is considered a prodigy too. Well, at least she is in the Abomination track. And Hunter managed to fight her to a draw, even though he was already exhausted. I mean, seriously, just look at those shadows under his eyes. The poor guy actually considered getting up at 6:00 to be sleeping in, and he only got one day off a year.
Wiz: It was actually in his fight with Amity that Hunter first started using Palisman magic. He was even able to use Flapjack to block and cancel out a magical wail from King, who was a Titan child, and those wails can be quite destructive.
Boomstick: You may be thinking, but doesn’t that mean it was Flapjack’s power and not his? Well, you’d be right, but then you need to remember that Hunter gained Flapjack’s magic, so that’s his power now.
Wiz: In addition to his already impressive skills, Hunter has shown to be able to adapt, learn, and use new forms of magic very quickly and easily. We already mentioned how fast he was able to adapt to using Flapjack instead of his artificial staff, which, as he himself stated, felt weird to use with how different it worked. However, he was also shown to be able to quickly learn how to use glyphs and the magic granted to him by Flapjack.
Boomstick: Like with the way he was able to escape from the giant vines that had ensnared him and Willow after her magic went wild. Oh, and how about how he pretty much master playing Flyer Derby, even though he never played it before. And let’s not forget how he escaped from Belos’ mind after he and Luz got trapped there.
Wiz: Well, to be fair, he wasn’t the one who got them out. However, he did manage to escape the grasp of the mindscape using glyph magic after he was dragged into the depths of his mind, which was stated that there was no escape from.
Boomstick: You think that’s badass? How about when he and his friends stood their ground against Belos after he went beast mode. And Hunter was literally having the life drained out of him through his coven sigil. And that spell was from the Collector. Everyone else was pretty much dead on their feet, literally, or half-conscious, yet Hunter was up and fighting Belos in his true form.
Wiz: Eventually, Hunter and his friends were able to defeat Belos and save the Boiling Isles. And over the years, he became a professional Palisman carver, even creating a new Palisman for himself called Waffles, who was basically described as being Flapjack’s little sister.
Boomstick: You know, if you think about it, this would actually make him even stronger since he could now use Waffles magic on top of Flapjack’s that he already possessed.
Wiz: True, but at this point, power and status no longer mattered to Hunter, as he now had what he really wanted, even if it took him a while to figure it out, and that was friends and family.
Lena Sabrewing[]
Wiz: When people think of the shadow world or creatures of shadow, they normally associate them with evil.
Boomstick: And they’d be right! Well, initially anyway.
Wiz: This was the case for Lena Sabrewing. Mostly. But considering the circumstances of her creation, having a rather… dark start to life is almost expected.
Boomstick: Yeah, no kidding. What other kind of start would anyone who once was a literal shadow supposed to have?
- Background
- Real name: Lena Sabrewing (formerly De Spell)
- Age: 15 in shadow years (physically 13-14)
- Race: American Pekin Duck
- Born at Mount Vesuvius
- The living shadow of Magica De Spell
- A being of sentient shadow/pure energy
- Formerly Magica’s assistant
- Best friend of Webby Vanderquack
- Adoptive sister of Violet Sabrewing
- Character was inspired by Minima De Spell
Wiz: To get the full story, we first have to look at the history of her aunt, who was really more of her mother considering she was created by her. As a powerful witch, Magica De Spell was a long-time enemy of Scrooge McDuck. During one of their confrontations, Magica was sealed away in Scrooge’s number one dime.
Boomstick: Hey, Wiz, did you know that his dime was made of white gold instead of the usual metal dimes are made of. Just a bit of DuckTales trivia for you.
Wiz: By ‘usual metal’, do you mean silver until 1965 and then 75% nickel and 25% copper after that?
Boomstick: …Wiz, why do you know these things?
Wiz: It’s called being informed.
Boomstick: It’s called being a nerd.
Wiz: Agree to disagree. But back on topic. Trapped as she was, Magica sought to escape by using what magic she had left to bring her shadow to life. And that shadow ended up becoming Lena.
Boomstick: Yeah, so, I never got this part. Lena is Magica’s living shadow, but Magica could still interact with her from inside Scrooge’s dime as Lena’s shadow. Like, how does that work? And how does a shadow have a shadow?
Wiz: Well, Lena was essentially a physical embodiment of Magica’s shadow, but she was still an individual. This, however, kept the two of them connected, even though Lena was now her own person, capable of acting independent of Magica, who, as we said, she considered her aunt.
Boomstick: That doesn’t really answer my question of how a shadow can have a shadow of its own.
Wiz: It’s a magic shadow brought to life and made flesh in a cartoon about anthropomorphic ducks, Boomstick, don’t read too much into it.
Boomstick: So says the nerd. Aren’t you supposed to be the smart one who explains everything?
Wiz: Unfortunately for Magica, Lena turned out to be a rather rebellious teenager. However, she did agree to free her aunt under the condition that once she did, Magica would, in turn, free her of their connection and grant her independence.
Boomstick: So, what, she just wouldn’t have a shadow then? What would happen when Magica stood in direct sunlight? Don’t people have shadows because–
Wiz: No more talk about magical shadows, Boomstick! It’s magic, it doesn’t operate based on reason, science, or logic.
Boomstick: Hehe, someone’s testy. Frustrated that your nerd brain can’t explain how magic works?
Wiz: Moving on. In order to free Magica, Lena needed to get ahold of Scrooge’s number one dime. She attempted to do this by befriending Webbigail Vanderquack, the granddaughter of Bentina Beakley, Scrooge’s housekeeper.
Boomstick: Well, she wasn’t actually Beakley’s granddaughter, but a genetic test tube baby created from Scrooge’s DNA by an evil organization, but that’s a story for another time. Getting back to this story, how do you think things turned out for Lena’s plan? Here’s a hint, it was very cliché.
Wiz: After several failed attempts to use her friendship with Webby to get close enough to get Scrooge’s dime, the fake friendship Lena had formed with her became a genuine one, and she eventually turned against her aunt, helping the McDucks to defeat Magica once she did manage to get free.
Boomstick: Then she became Webby’s shadow for a while before she was able to manifest as her own independent person free of Magica, with a little help from an occult enthusiast of course.
- Powers and Abilities
- Super Sorceress transformation
- Flight (when transformed)
- Sumerian talisman/amulet (formerly)
- Various spells
- Magic barriers
- Beams of magic
- Shadow physiology (intangibility and levitation)
- Enchanting meaningful objects
- Shadow form
- Magic chanting
- Dream walking (dream connecting and manipulating)
- Telekinesis
- Magic fire
- Transfiguration
- Occult knowledge
- Time freezing
- Mind invasion
- Invisibility
- Hand-to-hand combat
- Vesuvian diamond dagger
Wiz: Well, not completely free. After Magica was defeated, her source of power, a magical amulet known as the Sumerian talisman, fell into Lena’s possession. This granted her the power to use Magica’s power as her own.
Boomstick: And trust me, that witch was powerful. She essentially had control of the shadow world and was able to take over all of Duckberg. She even created a whole army by stealing the shadows of everyone else. So it’s a good thing Lena made off with her amulet. Hey, Wiz, try saying this five times fast. ‘Magically made off with Magica’s magic’.
Wiz: I don’t care for tongue-twisters, Boomstick.
Boomstick: Magically made off with Magica’s magic. Magically made off with Magica’s magic. Magicky mage off with Magic’s magica. Magi– Blah!
Wiz: Unfortunately, Lena wasn’t really able to control this magic. Aside from using the amulet to perform simple spells, such as telekinesis, firing beams of magic, and transfiguration, Lena couldn’t put it to any real use. Not even when she temporarily teamed up with Magica to be trained in how to use it in order to stop a magic hunter who had come after her.
Boomstick: But some good did come out of it. Even though she wasn’t able to control Magica’s magic, thanks to the training she underwent, Lena found out that she had magic of her own that she could control, and it was pretty powerful too, enough to let her stand against her aunt. Well, at least enough to cause Magica to lose her magic staff.
Wiz: With her own magic now at her disposal, Lena was now capable of an assortment of different spells. Essentially any of the magic she could control when using Magica’s amulet, she could now use with her own, not to mention her own brand of spells and magic. And those powers really came in handy as she joined the McDucks on their various adventures.
Boomstick: But if you thought that her talent was exclusive to magic alone, you’d be wrong. To go with her badassery, she’s actually pretty good at hand-to-hand combat and can hold her own in a physical fight. She might even pull her diamond dagger on you.
Wiz: And despite having gained a physical form, Lena has shown that she still possesses shadow physiology, and can even shift back into shadow form. But it really is with her magic that she truly shines.
Boomstick: She even pulls a My Little Pony and uses the magic of friendship to increase her power.
Wiz: Well, not exactly. Rather, she’s able to enchant objects, and seeing as how magic powered by the bonds of friendship is quite strong, the friendship bracelets she enchanted that she shares with Webby and Violet are able to amplify her magic when they’re together.
Boomstick: Yeah, you really don’t want to get on her bad side, and messing with her friends is a pretty good way to do that. You’re not even safe from her in your own mind considering she can invade it.
Wiz: More or less. She is able to enter a person’s mind, and has even revealed that she’s a dreamwalker, being able to enter the dreams of others while she sleeps and pull others who are sleeping into shared dreams. And while she can manipulate dreams and interact with someone in their mind, this does all simply take place in the mind, so she can’t really harm anyone doing this.
Boomstick: Yeah, but it does allow her to try out different hypothetical plans and strategies in the mindscape to see how she might handle a situation before actually trying it for real once she leaves their mind. Don’t know why she’d bother though when she can just bring her powers to the max by totally going Super Saiyan Blue.
Wiz: It’s called her Super Sorceress form, Boomstick, and it’s essentially a magical girl transformation that, yes, comes with a blue wardrobe. In this form, Lena’s powers are at their peak, and she gains a power boost that amplifies her magic.
- Feats
- Defeated a giant magical money-shark
- Resisted being possessed by Magic De Spell
- Took Magica’s magic for herself (temporarily)
- Discovered and mastered her own magic
- Overpowered Magica
- Defeated shadow manifestations of her fear
- Helped fight against the Moonlanders’ invasion
- Overloaded and destroyed the magic draining Blot Glove
- Defeated Phantom Blot
- Stopped time
- Turned an entire plane invisible
Boomstick: Not that she isn’t powerful even when she’s in her normal form. We actually saw her cast and maintain an invisibility spell over an entire airplane. Or how about when she overloaded and destroyed a magic draining gauntlet. And let’s not forget when she destroyed an entire money shark?
Wiz: To clarify, the money shark was, quite literally, a shark made out of money. Due to an enchantment cast by Magica, a portion of Scrooge’s money bin was brought to life and came together in the form of a shark that continued to grow with the more coins it added to its body. The money shark had grown to a rather large size before Lena, using the power of friendship with Webby, managed to destroy it with a single spell.
Boomstick: Yeah, when it comes to Webby, Lena’s pretty much up for doing whatever it takes to save her. She even managed to resist Magica’s control over her when she possessed her, and then again later when Lena was reduced to an actual shadow once more.
Wiz: But perhaps Lena’s greatest display of power was when she quite literally stopped time.
Boomstick: Oh, yeah, I remember that. She and the… red duck brother were attacked by that rooster guy, so she stopped time and entered red brother’s mind so they could come up with a way to beat him.
Wiz: …You don’t know which of the triplets is which?
Boomstick: Nah, I just call them Red, Green, and Blue.
Wiz: In any case, as impressive as stopping time is, it doesn’t really help Lena all that much since she can’t interact with anything that’s frozen. It does, as we mentioned, give her time to strategize and try and come up with a way to defeat her opponent.
Boomstick: Or she could just, you know, fly away, since her blue form actually has full-on levitation flight. Wait, can’t ducks already fly?
Wiz: Not in the DuckTales universe Boomstick. But regardless, with her assortment of magical abilities, Lena is definitely one shadow person you want to have on your side when you’re going on an adventure.
Boomstick: After all, life is like a hurricane here in Duckberg.
Interlude[]
Wiz: Alright the combatants are set. Time to end this debate once and for all.
Boomstick: It’s time for a Death Battle!
The Battle[]
Somewhere on the Boiling Isles, Lena is walking along. She glances around at her surroundings, looking confused, then lets out an annoyed sigh as she scratches the back of her head.
Lena: “This can’t be the right place? Where am I? Did I misread the map’s directions? This adventure is turning out to be a real bust.”
Suddenly, from up in the sky, Hunter comes flying in on his artificial staff, dressed in his full Golden Guard uniform. He dramatically and aggressively lands a short distance away and points his staff at Lena.
Hunter: “Halt! You’re trespassing! Only authorized personnel are allowed in this area!”
Lena just crosses her arms, looking bored, and nonchalantly glances back over her shoulders.
Lena: “Oh, is that what those signs said? I didn’t bother to read them.”
Hunter: “Oh, a wise duck, huh? What coven are you in? Who’s your head?”
Lena: “Coven? I ain’t part of any coven.”
Hunter gasps, then holds out his staff threateningly.
Hunter: “So you’re a wild witch. Then I’m afraid you leave me with no choice. I’m taking you in.”
Still looking bored, Lena cocks her head to the side and raises an eyebrow at him.
Lena: “You can’t be serious. Are we really doing this?”
Hunter: “Come along quietly and there won’t be any trouble.”
Lena: “Wow, ok, we’re really doing this.”
She pulls out the Sumerian talisman and points it at Hunter, and it begins glowing with purple magic.
Lena: “Ok, Goldie, let’s go.”
FIGHT!
Lena begins firing beams of magic from her amulet. Hunter starts spinning around his staff, deflecting the beams. Once they stop, he fires his own magic beam from his staff. Lena does a backflip and the beam blasts where she had been standing. He fires another one and Lena holds out her amulet, creating a magic barrier that blocks this one too.
Rushing forward, Hunter begins swinging his staff against the barrier, but it manages it hold. He then stomps his staff on the ground and the top of his staff flashes, causing the ground to crack apart beneath Lena’s feet. She falls into the split open ground, but then she suddenly rises back up, riding on top of a large rock floating in the air and surrounded by several other levitating rocks that had broken apart from the ground splitting. She points at Hunter and the rocks go flying at him. He begins magically dashing about to avoid them, then points his staff up at her. A sword manifests in the air and flies at her. She ducks and dodges as the sword swipes and stabs at her before she blasts it with a beam of magic and the sword turns into a bat that flies off.
Leaping off the large rock, she shoots a stream of purple fire at Hunter from the amulet. He holds up his cape to protect himself from the flames, and his cape catches on fire. As he attempts to pat out the flames, Lena then points at him, and the rock she had been floating on crumbles apart into countless smaller rocks that go flying at Hunter. Then begin raining against him, tearing apart his cape and denting his helmet. He teleports away and reappears in front of Lena, thrusting his staff out at her. A burst of magic erupts from the end of it, blasting Lena off her feet. She lands a short distance away and drops her amulet. Hunter immediately blasts it with a beam of magic, and it turns into a spider. He then glances down at himself and cries out in aggravation before tearing off his dented helmet and brunt, torn-up cape and throwing them on the ground.
Hunter: “And I just mended this cape!”
Lena looks at the spider her amulet had turned into and watches as it hisses at her before scurrying off. Letting out a sigh, she gets up and dusts herself off, then turns back to Hunter. She holds up her hands, and they begin to glow with blue magic.
Lena: “That’s ok, I’ve got my own magic.”
She raises her hands into the air and several nearby trees rip out if the ground. She sends them flying at Hunter and he teleports again, reappearing just above Lena and swinging his staff at her. She holds up a glowing hand and blocks the blow. He disappears and reappears behind her, attacking again, but she blocks once more. They then fall into a repeating process of him teleporting to a different spot and trying to hit her while she blocks. At one point though, he’s too fast for her to react and nearly hits her, so she snaps her fingers and freezes time, his staff an inch away from her face.
Lena: “Ok, this guy’s being more difficult than I thought. So, how can I beat him…?”
She taps her chin in thought as she circles around him and looks him up and down. Coming to a stop in front of him, she examines his staff and reaches out to tap it with her finger.
Lena: “Hmm. It seems like this staff is his source of magic. If I get rid of it, he should be no problem. Ok then, let’s do this.”
She unfreezes time and suddenly turns into shadows. This causes Hunter to stumble right through her as if she were a ghost. Lena then sinks into the ground to become an actual shadow and slithers away into the shadow of a tree. As Hunter looks around, she emerges from a different shadow and rises up from the ground behind him, becoming solid once more. Hunter whirls around to face her, thrusting out with his staff, but Lena unleashes an explosion of magic that sends him flying backwards and he hits the ground hard. While he’s down, Lena fires a beam of magic that strikes his staff, knocking it out of his hands. It suddenly becomes surrounded by blue magic and whirls around in mid-air, flying towards Lena. She snatches it out of the air, then snaps it in half over her knee.
Lena: “No more magic for you.”
But Hunter just jumps to his feet and charges at her. He surprises her by throwing a punch, but she manages to dodge it, and he follows up with a kick that she blocks. The two then engage in hand-to-hand combat with Hunter mostly attacking and Lena mostly defending. He eventually manages to knock her down by jumping up and kicking her to the ground. He leaps at her to bring his elbow down on her, but she holds up a glowing hand and Hunter become surrounded by a blue aura and is held in the air. He struggles to get free as Lena gets to her feet.
Lena: “You may be able to fight, but you can’t do much else without your fancy staff, can you?”
Hunter: “Don’t be so sure.”
He pulls out a piece of paper with a light glyph on it and claps his hands together on it. There’s a blinding flash of light and Lena stumbles backwards, rubbing her eyes. Hunter drops to the ground as the blue aura surrounding him vanishes. Getting to his feet, he rushes over to her and moves behind her, slapping another piece of paper onto her back. Lena lowers her hands and glances over her shoulder a moment before the fire glyph activates, and she gets launched off her feet like a rocket. She skids across the ground, bouncing around before crashing into a tree.
As the fire glyph on Lena dies down, Hunter pulls out several more glyphs and charges at her. Lena gets up and turns back to him. Her hands begin glowing and she holds them up. The magic spreads from her hand and surrounds her, and a moments later, she turns invisible. Hunter skids to a stop and begins looking around for her. But then he suddenly keels over as if he’s been punched in the stomach, and then stumbles back as if he were hit in the face. A few more invisible blows strike him, causing him to drop his glyphs before one final blow knocks him to the ground.
Lena: “Can’t fight what you can’t see.”
Hunter sits up and pulls out another glyph.
Hunter: “You’re right.”
He takes a deep breath and slaps the glyph onto himself. He too turns invisible. A few moments later, Lena reappears and starts looking around, holding up her glowing hands. She begins randomly throwing balls of magic at different areas, but hits nothing. She looks around some more, and then her head snaps left and then right, as if she were struck, followed by her head snapping back and then her feet seemingly being kicked out from under her.
Hunter reappears as he takes a breath and pulls out another glyph that curls into a ball and ignites before expanding into a large fireball. He makes to throw it at Lena, but before he can, she fires a blast of magic that causes him to drop it and sends him flying backwards. She jumps to her feet and charges at him with her hands glowing. Hunter sits up and slaps another glyph on the ground. A large spike of ice emerges from the ground in front of him, pointed at Lena, and a trail of ice freezes out from it across the ground towards her, and she begins slipping and sliding on the ice towards Hunter. At the last second before she becomes impaled on the ice spike, she leaps over it and kicks off his head.
Landing behind him, she turns around and surrounds him with a blue aura again. Hunter is lifted off his feet and she sends him flying, crashing him into different trees. After several impacts though, he pulls out another glyph and vines shoot out of it. He uses them to lasso around another tree, using his momentum to swing around it and slingshot himself, freeing him from the blue aura as he flies back towards Lena. He goes over her head and tosses several glyphs into the air above her as he passes by, and they burst into fiery explosions around her, making her recoil. As Hunter lands, he places two fingers to his lips and whistles. Lena recovers from the series of explosions and lets out an annoyed growl as she turns to Hunter.
Lena: “Now I’m getting mad.”
Her glowing hands form two balls of magic that grow in size. She slaps them together, and they form an even bigger ball of magic that erupts into a beam that goes flying at Hunter. Before it can hit him though, Flapjack suddenly comes flying in. He flies in front of Hunter and turns into a staff, which Hunter snatches out of the air, and he uses it to deflect Lena’s attack. He then teleports into the air above her and swings his staff downward, sending out several bolts of magic in different directions.
Lena creates a magic barrier above her to block the bolts of magic that rain down on her. As she does this, Hunter suddenly appears in front of her and swings his staff at her. She casts another barrier in front of her, blocking him. He responds by slapping another glyph to the ground, and several vines burst up from the ground and coil around Lena. She’s lifted into the air as the vines twist together to form a pillar of vines with her bound to it. Hunter then tosses another glyph onto the vines and they freeze over in ice. Lena is frozen with them, and she and the vines are completely encased in ice. Hunter lets out a sigh of relief as his staff turns back into Flapjack and perches on his shoulder.
Hunter: “I think we got her, little buddy.”
But suddenly, Lena’s eyes begin glowing. Cracks start appearing all over the ice, and a moment later, there’s an explosion of magic that knocks Hunter back. When the light dies down, he sits up and sees that Lena has transformed into her Super Sorceress form and is floating in the air.
Hunter: “Well, that doesn’t look good.”
Lena: “For you.”
She fires beams of magic from both hands. Flapjack quickly turns back onto a staff, which Hunter grabs, and they teleport out of the way. He reappears a distance away and draws a magic circle in the air with his staff, firing a beam of magic from it. Lena holds up a glowing hand and catches the beam before launching it back at Hunter. He disappears out of its path and appears in the sky, swooping shown at her in a skydive while riding his staff as he pulls out another glyph. Lena turns up to him and holds out a glowing hand. A blue aura surrounds Hunter and he’s yanked off his staff. She brings him crashing to the ground, then makes a throwing gesture, and he’s sent flying high through the air, getting thrown far away.
Hunter cries out as he falls, but then Flapjack flies over to him and turns back into a staff. He manages to grab it and disappear just before he hits the ground. He reappears a short distance from Lena and begins spinning his staff, sending out a series of balls of magic. Lena creates a barrier in front of her that they blast against. As she does this, a mass of ground moves underneath her, and a moment later, a large rock fist bursts up from beneath her, punching her into the air.
Lena halts her momentum and looks around as she hovers in the air. She looks around, and a moment later, Hunter comes zooming at her. She manages to dodge, but then chases after him. Hunter doubles back, and the two fly at towards each other. Lena fires a beam of magic that Hunter maneuvers around, and Lena avoids him before they collide. They begin a game of chase, attack, and dodge, with both of them flying around each other with Lena firing beams of magic that Hunter avoids and her dodging his aerial attacks when he gets close enough. Finally though, Lena stops flying around.
Lena: “Enough of this.”
She holds out her hand as Hunter flies towards her again, and both he and his staff are surrounded by a blue aura, keeping them in place. Lena then pulls out her diamond dagger and flings it at Hunter while he’s immobilized. It goes spinning through the air and stabs Hunter in the chest. He cries out and falls off his staff, dropping the long distance to the ground and landing with a crash. He lies on the ground, unmoving, with the dagger buried in his chest as Lena lands nearby and returns to her normal form. A few moments later, Flapjack flies over to her and begins pecking at her head and chirping angrily, and she shoos him away.
Lean: “Hey, beat it, you buzzard. Don’t blame me, your master was asking for it.”
She knocks him away with a small burst of magic from her finger. Flapjack recovers and flies over to Hunter. He grabs the dagger and flies up until he pulls it free, then lands on his chest above his wound and nuzzles him affectionately. A moment later, he dissolves into particles of light. Hunter’s wounds vanish as new scars appear on his body, and he sits up with a gasp, his now brown eyes flying open. Lena sees him sit up and lets out a frustrated groan.
Lena: “Fine, let’s have at it.”
She transforms into her Super Sorceress form again and fires beams of magic at him from both hands. Hunter teleports away, reappearing right in front of Lena and delivers a punch to her jaw. She stumbles away and he magically dashes at her, delivering another punch in an uppercut that knocks her off her feet. She takes to the air before she hits the ground, but Hunter draws a magic circle with his finger in the air.
Hunter: “For Flapjack!”
He fires a beam of magic from the circle that blasts Lena, sending her spinning into the air. She recovers quickly though and fires her own beams of magic down at him. Hunter begins magically dashing through the air, darting from one spot to the other, going higher and higher until he reaches her. Once he’s in front of her, he starts to draw another circle in the air, but Lena suddenly unleashes an explosion of magic that erupts outward. Hunter is blasted back and goes falling to the ground. He manages to stick the landing though and turns to Lena as she lands a distance away. She fires a beam of magic at him, but he magically dashes out of the way.
He comes to a stop a short distance from her and crouches down to begin drawing on the ground. Lena fires a magic beam at him and he avoids it as he dashes at her, and she side steps him. He comes to a stop behind her and begins drawing again. She turns and fires another beam, but he dashes away again. The process repeats several times until Lena stops firing as Hunter repeatedly dashes from one spot to the next, occasionally dashing by so close that she has to dodge. After he crashes into her a few times with his dashes, she lets out a frustrated growl and unleashes her largest explosion of magic yet.
Hunter gets blasted away mid-dash from the magic explosion. He tumbles head-over-heels, but manages to land in a crouching position. Lena turns to him and fires beams of magic from both hands. Hunter draws a circle in the air and fires his own beam of magic. His beam collides with both of Lena’s, and the two forces of magic push against each other. After a few seconds of the beams pushing together though, Lena lets out a cry and unleashes more magic, her two beams becoming a single larger one. Her beam begins to push back Hunter’s, and it gets closer and closer as he crouches down on one knee while struggling to hold back Lena’s beam.
Lena: “Looks like this is it for you. Guess my magic is stronger than yours.”
Hunter: “Maybe so, but here’s an important lesson for you. Magic is everywhere!”
He suddenly dashes out of the way and over to what he had been drawing, and he stomps down on it.
Hunter: “Byeeeee!”
The large fire glyph he had drawn around Lena during his dashing around her starts glowing, with Lena in the middle of it. Suddenly, a massive pillar of fire erupts from it, and Lena’s cries are heard from within the stream of fire. Hunter recoils from the flames as they continue to rise up high into the air. Lena’s cries go silent, but the flames continue to erupt for the next several seconds. And when they finally stop, all that’s left of Lena is a fully cooked roasted duck, as if ready to be eaten for a feast.
Hunter breaths heavily as he stares at the roasted duck. But then his attention is suddenly drawn as he hears movement from behind him, and he whirls around to see a coven guard wearing a shirt that says STEVE on it coming out from behind some trees, spotting Hunter standing beside the cooked Lena.
Steve: “Hey, what’s all the commotion over here? Whoa, dude, you actually made lunch for us all?”
Hunter glances from Steve to Lena, then back again, looking uncomfortable.
Hunter: “Um… yes?”
Steve: “That’s awesome, man! Hey, guys, the Golden Guard made us lunch!”
Several more coven guards arrive and begin gathering around Hunter, who puts on a forced smile to hide his discomfort as he bashfully rubs the back of his head.
KO!
The coven guards sit around having a picnic as they eat Lena while Hunter sits in open discomfort as he holds a drumstick, staring at it uneasily.
Outcome[]
Boomstick: Is it weird that I can actually see something like that ending happening in the actual show? The Owl House did have some pretty dark themes.
Wiz: Lena actually stood a fairly decent chance at defeating Hunter. In fact, when it came to which of the two was more powerful, Lena definitely had stronger magic than Hunter.
Boomstick: Except for when he used glyphs. Then he was using the Titan’s power. But the strength of the spells did depend on how big of a glyph he made.
Wiz: But even though Lena had stronger magic, Hunter was able to make up the difference with a much wider variety and assortment of different kinds of spells. Remember, he was the leader of the Emperor’s Coven before he defected, and members of that coven in particular had access to all magic, and Hunter was considered a prodigy. And going by the different types of magic Hunter was seen using, not to mention the other spells other characters have been seen using, which Hunter should be able to do, he had a much greater number of different spells and kinds of magic that he could use.
Boomstick: It was a case of quantity over quality this time. No, wait, quality over quantity. No, no, quantity. Quality? Quantity?
Wiz: Quantity over quality, Boomstick; you were right the first time.
Boomstick: Yeah, that one. Lena had stronger magic, but Hunter had so many different kinds that he could pretty much take anything Lena threw at him and retaliate in ways she couldn’t.
Wiz: It wasn’t just the different kinds of magic he could use though, but also in his ways of casting such spells. He could do so with his staff, either his artificial one or with Flapjack, use glyph magic, or use his own magic once he inherited it from Flapjack.
Boomstick: And glyph magic also allowed him to basically use multiple spells at once. He could be casting his own spell and also use glyph magic, which gave him a major advantage. But Lena, as far as we know, could really only cast one spell at a time since doing so required concentration on her part. And really, we haven’t seen her do anything close to or as much as the kinds of things Hunter and the other witches on the Boiling Isles could do. Really, she mostly just uses telekinesis and fires magic beams, but Hunter could attack and defend in a lot more ways.
Wiz: It should also be noted how Hunter specializes in using his magic speed and teleporting. With it, he was able to avoid most of Lena’s attacks, which almost made Lena being more powerful than him moot. And while she did possess the power to stop time, as we mentioned before, she couldn’t affect anything that was frozen, so it actually didn’t help her, not even against Hunter’s speed.
Boomstick: Yeah, it didn’t really matter if she was stronger than him if she couldn’t actually hit him with her attacks. And thanks to being able to use glyph magic at the same time as his own magic, he was able to serve up Steve and his fellow guards a nice helping of roasted duck. Man, now I’m hungry.
Wiz: With a much greater variety of spells, and ways he could use them, not to mention avoid Lena’s own magic attacks, and even being a superior fighter, Hunter was able to make up the difference in their power gap and show just why he became the Golden Guard.
Boomstick: But did Flapjack really have to die again!? I can’t believe we had to watch that twice!
Wiz: The winner is Hunter.
