History

Formerly a student under Tobirama Senju, Hiruzen Sarutobi became the Third Hokage of the Hidden Leaf Village and sensei of the Sannin Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru before he left the village for his own agenda. Originally, Hiruzen passed his Hokage duties to Minato Namikaze after the Third Great Ninja War came to an end. But the death of Minato and his wife during the nine-tails attack forced Hiruzen to resume his duties while caring for Naruto Uzumaki. However, during Naruto's first Chunin Exams, Hiruzen died facing Orochimaru and using the Reaper Death Seal to render his wayward apprentice the ability to use normal ninjutsu. Years later, once Orochimaru found the means release the souls of those devoured by the Reaper, Hiruzen is reanimated during the height of the Fourth Great Ninja War.
