History[]
Freeman graduated from MIT with a doctorate in Theoretical physics, and at the beginning of the series is working at Black Mesa, with him having a son named Joshua at some point presumably between those points in time. However, at the beginning of the he unintentionally causes a Resonance Cascade with causes the facility to fall into ruin, with him needing to battle aliens, soldiers and even his friends alongside Dr. Harold Coomer, Bubby, Tommy Coolatta, and Benrey in order to escape with his life.
In Act 3 of the series Gordon is tricked by Benrey and Bubby into an ambush by the soldiers invading Black Mesa which ends with him getting his hand cut off and separated from all of his friends. Through the course of this Act Gordon reunites with them all, and fights opponents including Dr. Coomer's clone army, the Helicopter Heap, and his own instincts as he learns to rely on those around him in fights now that he is unable to do any fighting himself.
At the beginning of the fourth and final act of the series Gordon encounters Darnold from the Mixology department of Black Mesa who offers him a potion which will grow back his hand. However to Gordon's dismay the potion doesn't actually grow his hand back how it was, with it instead growing a minigun on the end of his arm which can now shoot his fingernails at high speeds as though they were bullets. He goes on through the rest of the facility getting used to his new very powerful weapon which is able to tear through his enemies much faster than any other gun he wielded when he still had his hand. Through the course of the rest of the act Gordon learns that Benrey has been the root cause of everything going wrong within not only the Black Mesa facility, but also throughout the whole game of Half-life, with Benrey having taken the place of the normal final boss the Nihilanth. Gordon is able to defeat Benrey with the help of the rest of his friends and destroying all of their passports, and is threatened by the G-man into going to his son's, Tommy's, birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese's.
