Description[]
Toho vs. Tsuburaya! The two greatest creations of monster master Eiji Tsuburaya go head to head in a battle between the ultimate monster and the ultimate hero!
Interlude[]
Kit: Godzilla, King of the Monsters.
Surge: Ultraman, the Warrior of Light.
Kit: Tokusatsu, a style of film-making where -
Surge: People in rubber monster suits destroy tiny cities and beat each other up!
Kit: No name in the industry matched that of monster master Eiji Tsuburaya, whose work birthed these two, and they stand as icons of Japanese pop culture even after more than fifty years.
Surge: But when the ultimate monster is pitted against the ultimate hero, who will stand victorious... and how much destruction will be wrought?
Kit: For this battle, we will be pitting a semi-composite Godzilla, using only the Japanese live-action films, against the original Ultraman, using the official media he has appeared in.
Surge: Considering the likes of IDW's Godzilla, who has killed the literal God and Satan, and Ultraman King, who has reversed the destruction of entire universes... probably a good idea.
Kit: In addition, Godzilla will be scaled down to the height of Ultraman. Godzilla's average canon height is nearly twice that of Ultraman, and while Ultraman could use his size-changing ability to match it, it would exhaust him quickly, leading to an unfair match-up.
Surge: He's Kitsunami and I'm Surge!
Kit: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle!
Godzilla Rules the Monsters in Death Battle![]
Kit: In the year 1954, as World War II was still fresh in the world's minds, nations tested new weapons in fear that they would have to be used in another global clash. However, during American H-bomb tests in the Pacific Ocean, something was stirred from its slumber. Something that had been dormant since the age of the dinosaurs, and something that was not happy to be awakened.
Surge: Further mutated and granted even greater power by the radiation, "Gojira," as they would call him, made his way to the nearest land mass, Japan, and unleashed his anger on humanity!...
Kit: Until he was reduced to bones by Dr. Serizawa's patented bubble bath formula.
Surge: But this was only the beginning. Since the fall of the original, more of Godzilla's species, inexplicably with the same mutant powers, have appeared, some to destroy Japan, and others to save it.
Kit: Regardless of his allegiance, the fifty-five-thousand-ton Godzilla is a force of destruction. He leaves massive nuclear fallout in his wake that contaminates everything, rendering cities uninhabitable just by being there.
Surge: Although that's of course downplayed in his more heroic incarnations.
Kit: In battle, Godzilla's brute strength is incredible. He was able to lift and throw the 150,000-ton Super Mechagodzilla, and him slamming foes on the ground was able to generate earthquakes.
Surge: The Kaiju King compliments this strength with surprising speed and agility for his size. He can jump hundreds of meters, his reflexes are great enough to counter laser beams and catch a jet in mid-flight, and he was able to keep up with and react to the hypersonic Megaguirus. And of course, he can balance on his tail for the infamous sliding kick attack.
Kit: The Tail Slide Kick isn't an outlier - Godzilla's fighting style is far more than just teeth and claws. He's more akin to a giant martial artist or wrestler - his original suit actor, rest in peace, was a black belt, and incorporated his knowledge into fight scenes.
Surge: Naturally, Godzilla is also durable as heck! He's endured Mechagodzilla's missiles, Biollante's radioactive acid, a miniature black hole, and THE PRESSURE UNDERNEATH THE EARTH'S CRUST, swimming through the molten mantle!
Kit: And the opposite of that heat is also nothing to him - he managed to survive Kiryu's Absolute Zero Cannon, cold enough to freeze the movement of individual atoms. Finally, in Final Wars, he tanked a meteor impact that wiped out the entire city around him!
Surge: On top of that crazy durability, Godzilla possesses Regenerator G-1, a healing factor that, given time, allows him to recover from nearly any injury, including one specific time when ONLY HIS STILL-BEATING HEART REMAINED. And I thought our Metal Virus implants were crazy...
Kit: Now, naturally, Godzilla backs up his incredible strength, durability and healing with powerful offensive weapons. He is capable of manipulating atomic energy, or gamma rays, to either be radiated from his entire body as a destructive Nuclear Pulse, or, of course, released as a mighty heat beam from his mouth - the Atomic Breath.
Surge: The Atomic Breath burns at a temperature of 500,000 degrees Celsius, and can melt through steel like butter. However, it also boasts incredible physical force, enough that it can send other monsters flying, and - get this - PROPEL HIMSELF THROUGH THE AIR LIKE A ROCKET. AND IT CAN GET EVEN STRONGER! The Heisei and Final Wars versions of Godzilla possess an even more powerful, red-colored Atomic Breath - the Spiral Fire Ray, which destroyed some of his most powerful opponents, including Mechagodzilla II, SpaceGodzilla, and Kaizer Ghidorah.
Kit: Over the years, Godzilla has picked up a few stranger abilities as well. While he possesses somewhat of a weakness to artificial electricity, he's figured out how to use his atomic energy to magnetize himself, pulling in anything metallic - including Mechagodzilla, who he developed the technique to defeat.
Surge: He even possesses resistance to mind hax, having beaten the powerful esper Miki Saegusa in not one, but two mental battles, even when her powers were greatly enhanced by a machine, WHICH GODZILLA OVERLOADED, in the rematch.
Kit: With all this strength and various powers, Godzilla seems almost invincible, but that's far from the case. As we said, he's vulnerable to artificial electricity -
Surge: Bet I could take him! -
Kit: but in addition, due to his sheer size and destructive nature... he's a bit clumsy. And despite several feats of agility from his Showa self mentioned previously, his other incarnations are normally pretty slow for a kaiju, making his speed inconsistent. But his biggest weakness is a second brain, located where his tail meets his hips. This organ controls Godzilla's movement, and if it's destroyed, he'll be completely paralyzed.
Surge: Unless you've got a Rodan handy to donate his life force, I don't think the King is coming back from that.
Kit: Regardless, Godzilla's strengths vastly exceed his weaknesses, and his few defeats are overshadowed by his great victories. He's defeated his rival King Ghidorah, who wipes out all life on the planets he attacks, countless times, including the strongest of them all, Kaizer Ghidorah. He's also beaten three different doppelgangers of himself, all superior in power to him, and fought a fourth to a draw twice! And let's not forget his battle marathon from Final Wars, where he defeated a grand total of ten monsters in a row without much effort.
Surge: In the end, whatever dares threaten the Monster King's Earth must prepare to fight for its life - Godzilla awaits, and he will never back down from a battle.
Ultraman Fights for the Light in Death Battle![]
Kit: In the faraway M78 Nebula, there exists a planet without a star to orbit. It is sixty times the size of Earth, with a population of over 18 billion. Its landmasses and cities are made of dazzling green crystal, and it is powered by an artificial sun kept in a massive tower.
Surge: This planet is the Land of Light, and it is home to the Ultras, guardians of the multiverse!
Kit: Over 260,000 years ago, the Ultras came to be when the Land of Light's native humanoids created the Plasma Spark to replace its dying sun. Upon the Spark's activation, it created a cosmic burst of Differator Rays that evolved the race into the superpowered silver giants they are now.
Surge: However, the radiation from the blast also affected the rest of the universe, mutating life forms and aliens into kaiju. Seeing the consequences of their empowerment, the Ultras decided to make up for this by using their power for good, eventually forming the Intergalactic Defense Force to assign heroes to different planets in need of protecting.
Kit: And eventually, these monsters came to Earth, a planet the Ultras would come to cherish. It all began when a Space Ranger from the Force pursued the criminal monster Bemular to Earth. As he landed, his Flash Travel sphere accidentally collided with a VTOL jet belonging to the SSSP, humanity's elite anti-monster task force.
Surge: Pilot Shin Hayata was killed in the crash, but, out of remorse, the Ultra merged his life force with the man's, bringing him back to life and granting him a device known as the Beta Capsule. From then on, when monsters and aliens proved too much for the SSSP to handle, with a press of the button on the Capsule's side, Hayata became... Ultraman!
Kit: Forty meters tall, 35,000 tons in weight, and boasting 20,000 years of experience, Ultraman is a mighty force of justice, and boasts the strength to match. His punch is said to carry the force of fifty charging elephants, and his kick is hundreds of times more powerful than would be expected from even his gigantic height.
Surge: Ultraman was able to easily overpower, lift and throw the underground monster Telesdon, who weighed 120,000 tons! His strength is commonly considered superior to that of even other Ultras, as he often beats monsters into unconsciousness, and is fond of ripping body parts off of his foes. Although... he could barely lift the 200,000-ton Skydon, but that was mostly plot mandated.
Kit: Ultraman's speed is great too. His official stats say he can fly at Mach 5 in Earth's atmosphere, run at 280 MPH, and swim at 230 MPH... but his in-series feats exceed those numbers.
Surge: Like the time he was able to react in time to shield his eyes from Zaragas' blinding light flashes, the time he flew a nuclear bomb into deep space in just ten seconds, and the time he spun around fast enough to straight up overload the reality-warping powers of Bullton!
Kit: Ultraman fights with his strength and speed using a style of judo, implemented by his first suit actor. His style primarily relies on grapples, throws and chops. But he doesn't just dish out damage; he can take it incredibly well! The red and silver "suit" he wears is actually his skin, the Ultra Armor, and it grants him the innate resistance of other Ultras and more.
Surge: His body is resistant to fire, laser beams, chemical weathering, nuclear explosions, and his own beam attacks. Plus, he's completely immune to electricity! But he also possesses an assortment of special techniques of his own to compliment his physical might.
Kit: Ultraman can - *inhales* - fly using anti-gravity waves generated from his feet, move or even explode huge monsters with telekinesis, see through walls and inside monsters with X-ray beams from his eyes, generate a barrier wall of energy to defend against or even reflect opponents' attacks, spray a jet of water from his hands to extinguish fires, paralyze or bind an opponent with energy projection, multiply into an army of identical duplicates of himself, and teleport as far as inter-planetary distances, though the latter drains his energy.
Surge: But Ultraman's true strength lies in his offensive beam attacks. His signature move, the Specium Ray -
Kit: Spacium Beam -
Surge: Specium Ray, is a mighty blast of light particles fired from his crossed hands. A reaction between positive and negative energy, it's 500,000 degrees hot, and carries 500,000 horsepower, or 372,850,000 watts, of energy. In the original series, nearly every monster Ultraman faced was destroyed or fatally wounded with a single shot of this beam.
Kit: After the Spacium Beam, his most iconic attack is the Ultra-Slash, a Destructo Disc-style buzzsaw of light that cuts through monsters like butter. It can also split into multiple copies of itself, and home in on evasive foes.
Surge: But his most powerful attack is easily the spiraling green Ultra Attack Ray, which causes a timed explosion that blew the plant monster Keronia to bits - AFTER HE HAD TANKED THE SPECIUM RAY LIKE IT WAS NOTHING!
Kit: It's likely that Ultraman's beams scale to those of the other Ultra Brothers. The most powerful among them to be shown was Ultraman Leo's Shooting Beam, which was capable of obliterating the Black Star, a sentient planet, which was on a collision course with Earth.
Surge: And Leo isn't even an Ultra who specializes in beam attacks - he prefers to fight with his fists and Space Martial Arts! Now imagine what the Ultra Attack Ray could do at full power.
Kit: What gives an Ultra's beams, called... Ultra Beams, their power, is a unique property. Ultraman Jack's version of the Spacium Beam, and Mebius' Mebium Shoot in conjunction with his human allies' tech, were able to separate the spirit monster Femigon from her human host. This indicates that an Ultra Beam is able to disrupt bonds, including those between molecules.
Surge: That's how the beams are able to destroy monsters and UFOS that human weaponry can't hurt in the slightest, and even how they beat monsters with healing factors: not by just blowing them up, but by atomizing their cells. The most extreme example of this was Ultraman Noa and his devolved form Nexus, whose beams disintegrated the monsters into particles. While many monsters over the years have had armor or shields that could endure Ultra Beams, far more have fallen to their power.
Kit: Now, Ultraman is incredibly powerful, but he has one huge weakness to exploit: he and his kind are powered by solar energy from stars. In Earth's atmosphere, most of the sunlight is filtered out through the ozone layer, reducing Ultraman's ability to process it. As a result, he can only fight without exposure to direct sunlight for around three minutes -
Surge: The tremendous energy Ultraman gets from the sun diminishes rapidly in Earth’s atmosphere. The warning light starts to blink. Should the light go out, it will mean Ultraman will never rise again!... Sorry, I had to.
Kit: Yes. That "warning light" is his Color Timer, a device implanted on Space Rangers to measure their energy and keep them from accidentally going over the limit. Nearly every Ultra intending to protect a planet, has one. In addition, due to their reliance on the heat of the stars, Ultras are vulnerable to cold temperatures. Ultraseven, for instance, was quickly incapacitated when the Alien Pole created a massive blizzard, even when he wasn't in his Ultra form.
Surge: And when the Plasma Spark was stolen from the Land of Light, no Ultra on the planet escaped from being frozen solid... except, ironically, Ultraman and Ultraseven. However, even with limited time, Ultras don't stand around and do nothing for three minutes, as shown by the countless monsters Ultraman and his brethren have defeated, the countless alien invasions they've stopped, and the countless times they've saved the world and even the universe.
Kit: Even after his time protecting Earth was done, Ultraman would occasionally return to aid and sometimes save his successors, lending them his experience and advice in addition to fighting by their side. Even in the future, when humanity developed past the need for protection and advanced to the stars, Ultraman would come to aid anyone in need.
Surge: He contributed to the Six Ultra Brothers' defeat of Alien Temperor, who looked to conquer the Land of Light. He aided humanity and Ultraman Mebius in destroying a layer of rock that coated the sun and finally killing the godlike Alien Empera, who once DID conquer the Land of Light. Together with Ultraseven, he killed Alien Rayblood, a godlike alien ghost who could create pocket dimensions and black holes and survive planetary destruction. And he was part of the ragtag force that defeated the One Hundred Monster Army commanded by Ultraman Belial, Rayblood's vessel, and restored the Plasma Spark after the whole "everyone freezing" thing.
Surge: Indeed, the first Ultraman set the path for every Ultra guardian after him. Even thousands of years after his first adventure, he continues to stand as one of the greats, and a true intergalactic hero of light. May monstrous destroyers and alien invaders beware his power!
Pre-Fight[]
Kit: All right, the combatants are set, and we've run the data through all possibilities.
Surge: IT'S TIME FOR A DEATH BATTLE!
DEATH BATTLE![]
The sun was high in the sky over a nondescript seaside town, somewhere in Japan. On the docks, boats were coming and going, some for fishing, others for tourism. Inland, various civilians entered and exited homes and shops, some attending their jobs, others merely sightseeing or shopping. The atmosphere gave off a feeling of peace, as if it were a perfect day to go for a walk in the neighborhood.
That peace was about to be shattered.
It began with the ground rumbling. The sudden movement caused many civilians to stumble, gasps and utterances of shock consuming the populace. As they began to recover, helping each other stand and some even checking others for injuries, one voice suddenly screamed in terror, attracting attention to the young woman, pointing at the sea.
Just off the coast, where the water was deep enough, a row of colossal spiked structures, all too familiar to the populace of Japan, were cutting through the waves. As the town looked on in horror, the spines stopped moving, before, in a massive eruption of water, the creature attached to them rose up, rearing his head to the sky, his iconic roar echoing across the area.
“SKREEEEEEEEEEEEONK!”
A single man amongst the crowd, pointing toward the monster, shouted out its name in terror.
“G-Gojira!”
Already, destruction was wrought. The water displaced by Godzilla’s rise crashed into the town docks, demolishing the flimsy wooden structures and sending any boats unlucky enough to be there crashing onto the beach.
With one step and then another, the King of the Monsters rose more and more out of the water until he reached dry land. Turning his head towards the ground, he gazed down on the humans, who were already fleeing en masse. Opening his mouth, blue light began to gather in his maw, before, suddenly, it was released in a powerful Atomic Breath beam. The attack swept across the ground before Godzilla in an arc, incinerating trees and plants near the town, then buildings in the town itself that were in the way, and then unfortunate humans, reduced to atoms without a moment to think. Even those who escaped incineration would soon feel the effects, poisoning and cancer, from the sheer radiation. With so much damage already dealt, Godzilla continued marching inland, his feet occasionally crushing a town house along the way.
Just when it seemed all was lost for the citizens of the town, something came soaring through the sky. A jet plane similar to a small commercial model, albeit with a powerful jet engine mounted to the back, it was a bright silver color with paint applications in a heroic bright red. On its wings and tail fins were emblems resembling a five-pointed star with a comet trail.
This was a Jet VTOL, the signature vehicle of the Earth-defending Science Special Search Party.
Godzilla glared at the mysterious plane as it rapidly approached him. To him, it was just another military craft. Once again, he charged and fired his Atomic Breath, but to his surprise, the plane nimbly avoided it. Flying around the Monster King, the jet fired off a series of missiles, which struck and exploded against his hide. He roared out, surprisingly feeling the effects. The weaponry, after all, was specifically anti-monster. However, he would soon recover.
Noticing this, the unseen pilot of the jet flew in closer and continued to fire, small explosions rocking Godzilla’s body. Eventually, he grew tired of it. Once again, he gathered blue atomic energy, but this time, it surged throughout his entire body, before being discharged. The Nuclear Pulse, while low in range, was enough to hit the Jet VTOL, which shook in midair, before its engine stopped and it began to careen toward the ground.
Within the cockpit, one would be expected to brace for impact. However, Shin Hayata had other plans. Withstanding the turbulence, he reached into his coat and pulled out a curious device. Raising the Beta Capsule to the air, Hayata pressed the button on the side, and became engulfed in flashes of light.
Godzilla watched the VTOL crash to the ground, looking on with indifference. However, he was suddenly taken aback when a shining light ejected from the plane. It flew up, levitating several hundred meters in front of the King of the Monsters, and, with an explosive flashing noise, expanded and changed shape. The light took the form of a humanoid figure, one arm bent and the other pointed to the sky, and then dissipated, revealing none other than the Warrior of Light, Ultraman.
“SHIYAH!”
The giant bent over and spread his open hands in a ready fighting stance.
Godzilla snarled, taking in the appearance of what he knew would be his opponent. He wasn’t sure what Ultraman was, an alien like Zone Fighter or a robot like Jet Jaguar, but he could tell the giant intended to oppose him.
Meanwhile, on the outskirts of the town, the surviving humans saw Ultraman appear, and immediately, cheering erupted, albeit cautiously. Japan’s hero had heard their fear and came to the rescue. They knew Godzilla might be the most powerful monster Ultraman had ever faced, but in the end, the giant of light had always triumphed. Now, he might be able to end the Monster King’s threat once and for all.
Godzilla stomped a foot on the ground and screamed out a roar of challenge to Ultraman, daring him to make the first move. The giant did so, letting out a battle grunt before running at the monster king.
Immediately, Ultraman lowered his head and crashed into Godzilla head-first, his prominent crest a hundred times harder than diamond. Godzilla staggered briefly from the massive force, but quickly regained his composure, and before Ultraman could pull back, the monster’s clawed hands firmly grabbed the sides of the warrior’s head. With his brute strength, Godzilla raised his hands up, carrying Ultraman into the air, and then slammed him back into the ground. The impact force, and those that followed, once again shook the ground beneath the buildings and the watching civilians’ feet.
After three slams, Ultraman planted his feet back on the ground and yanked himself free of Godzilla’s grasp, flipping backwards out of the Monster King’s reach. Landing on one knee, he placed his left palm horizontally over the edge of his right hand, and from it a series of yellow energy arrows were fired. The Slash Ray projectiles struck Godzilla’s chest and stomach, piercing into the flesh briefly before exploding. This once again forced the monster to stagger, and as he recovered, Ultraman could see moderate burns on Godzilla’s chest. However, he also observed that the flesh was slowly returning to its natural color. Godzilla could heal from the damage of Ultraman’s attacks, but it took time. That was a good thing.
As Ultraman thought, he suddenly had to react. Godzilla’s massive tail was swinging directly at him. With impressive reflexes, the Warrior of Light’s arms shot out and grabbed the appendage, earning a brief screech of surprise from the Monster King. Exerting his full strength, Ultraman shifted his weight to the side with a grunt, and astonishingly, yanked Godzilla off his feet! With a full rotation and then another, the hero spun the monster around by the tail, and when he was facing in the direction of the sea, let go. Godzilla was tossed into the already-destroyed outskirts of the city, where Ultraman knew lives would be safer.
Not letting his opponent recover, the giant ran towards the fallen monster king, leaping up to tackle him. However, from the ground, Godzilla looked up, and Ultraman would swear the beast had a sinister grin. Blue light coursed through his body, once again releasing the Nuclear Pulse that had previously wrecked Hayata’s jet. While the heat and radiation weren’t much to Ultraman, the concussive force was a different story. With a groan of pain, the hero was sent flying off Godzilla, crashing to the ground on his back further inland.
Ultraman rolled over and pulled himself to his feet, turning to face his opponent, only to be surprised with a shock. Godzilla was coming straight at him at high speeds, sliding on his tail, with his clawed feet out ready to strike! Knowing there was no stopping the king in this state, Ultraman simply crossed his arms in a “V” shape and braced for impact. The kick connected, Godzilla gliding past Ultraman and causing him to spin. Disoriented, Ultraman was facing away from Godzilla when he came at him from behind, grabbing the warrior around the waist. With great strength, Godzilla lifted Ultraman up, fell backwards, and slammed him into the ground with a suplex!
Rolling over, Ultraman landed on his back, with Godzilla facing him. The monster bent over Ultraman as if to gloat, a blue glow in his mouth signifying the charging of his atomic breath. However, Ultraman was ready. Reaching up and grabbing Godzilla’s arms, he pulled the king down, and with a kick to the back, launched him overhead. The atomic beam blasted into the air harmlessly, then cut off, Godzilla once again crashing to the ground with a roar of shock.
Ultraman leapt to his feet and struck a fighting stance once again, but was suddenly alerted by a technological ringing noise. He looked down at himself, and was proven right: his Color Timer was now flashing red, signifying he was running out of energy. Looking up once again, he saw Godzilla already on his feet. Ultraman couldn’t afford to keep wrestling with the monster king. He had to finish the fight, and FAST.
Arranging his arms into the form of a cross, with his right hand vertical and his left horizontal, Ultraman’s hands briefly glowed, before his vertical one released a powerful stream of blue-white particles. Before the ray of justice could reach Godzilla, he quickly charged and fired his Atomic Breath once more. Pushing through the Specium Ray, the clashing beams reached a center ground between the two combatants. In their efforts to win, both pushed forward, directing more energy into their attacks. However, Godzilla’s ray slowly but surely began to push through Ultraman’s, who cried out in shock before being struck with the combined power of both beams. A large explosion consumed his form.
When the dust settled, the hero was left on his back, his warning light blinking more rapidly. He planted his hands on the ground and began to pull himself up, only to be met with a lash from Godzilla’s powerful tail.
The monster king raised his tail again and struck Ultraman once more, but the third time, the hero grabbed the tail and rode it into the air, managing to return to his feet. He shoved the appendage away, leading to Godzilla turning to face him. For a few moments, they simply stood facing each other, the Color Timer beeping rapidly. Ultraman had just remembered something, and devised an attack that might be able to finish this once and for all. This had to work.
Ultraman raised a hand, opened for a chop, and charged at Godzilla, who simply stood there, as if begging the hero to give him his best shot. The knife-hand strike connected between the monster’s chest and neck, leaving a thin cut, before Ultraman stopped behind Godzilla, turning around to look at the effects.
The monster king turned to face the hero, blood now beginning to leak from his mouth from the wound Ultraman had inflicted. If the hero did this right, Godzilla was about to collapse and die. But instead, the blood was already beginning to lessen, and the atomic beast challenged Ultraman’s failed attack with another roar of defiance.
The warrior of light once again looked down at his Color Timer. Its ringing was now almost constant. He gazed towards the outskirts of the town and the distant civilians, then at Godzilla, the people he needed to protect and the one he needed to protect them from. And yet, he knew what he had to do. It would break the hearts of the humans and leave them temporarily vulnerable to the King of Monsters’ wrath, but if Ultraman didn’t do it, he would never defeat Godzilla. He had to.
Ultraman turned his head to the sky, and raising his arms, took flight, heading straight up, and soon vanishing from sight.
Godzilla craned his neck up, watching as his opponent seemed to flee. He looked back towards the people on the edge of town, looking on in horror as their hero seemed to have abandoned them. He considered wiping them out, but something told him that Ultraman would be back to continue the fight. And Godzilla decided he wasn’t going to let that happen.
Turning away from the direction Ultraman had flown in, Godzilla looked down and charged his Atomic Breath once more. It gathered in his mouth, but in addition, the slit in his throat inflicted by the Ultra Haze Slash. Finally, it was released, both from his mouth, and erupting out through his throat, the slit becoming a hole. With the energy coursing around his vocal cords, Godzilla could not roar in pain; he could only continue his action. The two outbursts of atomic energy struck the ground with great force, until finally, Godzilla’s feet lifted off. Propelling himself through the air, albeit not as fast as Ultraman had, the monster king, in spite of his pain, kept firing and flying, eventually blasting through the sky in pursuit of his opponent.
As Godzilla disappeared into the sky, the civilians were left looking on in awe. Though Ultraman had seemingly given up, his fight against Godzilla had led to the atomic monster sparing their lives. The remaining townspeople would see another day, but at what cost?
Unknown to them, Godzilla and Ultraman’s battle was far from over.
Breaking through the clouds, Ultraman flew up and up, eventually arriving in the upper limit of the atmosphere. There, the blackness of space loomed above him and the curvature of the Earth stretched out below him. Immediately, he could feel the heat and light of the distant sun, no longer filtered by the atmosphere. As he heard the blinking of his timer gradually slow down, he contemplated the beautiful view of the world his kind had come to care so much for, and his will to fight with his life for it. He began to feel regret for flying away from the town without a warning. He needed to recharge if he was going to defeat Godzilla, but he could have at least given the people some way of knowing he’d be back. It was only a matter of minutes before his power was fully restored. He would make things right.
Ultraman’s superhuman hearing picked up the sound of jet propulsion, getting closer and closer to him. He knew that human craft didn’t fly at this altitude, and they wouldn’t directly approach him, meaning only one thing. Part of him thought that was absurd, there was no way Godzilla could fly. The other knew that the monster king had been full of surprises before, and it wasn’t out of the question. The latter was quickly proven right when Ultraman caught notice of a black dot, backlit by blue light, beneath him, quickly increasing in size. Within a few moments, it was clearly visible as Godzilla, making Ultraman realize he no longer had to worry about protecting the residents of the town - the monster king was now after him specifically. Was that a good thing, or a bad thing?
When he was only about a thousand meters from Ultraman, Godzilla cut off his beam. Immediately afterwards, the monster let out a screaming roar of agony, finally able to let it loose from the intense pain in the hole in his neck. Trusting his Regenerator G-1, he chose to continue fighting, propelling himself through the low-gravity environment as if it were water with his powerful legs and tail, closing in on Ultraman.
As Godzilla approached, the blinking sound of the Color Timer finally stopped, and the organ returned to blue in color. Ultraman was now recharged and ready to take on Godzilla once more. In addition, now that he was directly exposed to sunlight, he was in his element. He pounded a hand against his own chest, daring Godzilla to come get some.
Managing to get upright in front of Ultraman, the floating Godzilla slashed at him with a clawed hand, and then another, producing sparks, but not seeming to hurt the warrior. Ultraman responded with a single punch, suddenly followed by a rapid barrage of blows to Godzilla’s chest and gut, before finishing with a knee strike to the torso, knocking the wind from the atomic beast. Godzilla recognized that something about space was making the hero stronger. Fortunately, he wouldn’t have to deal with this for long. Levitating backwards, Ultraman flew around in a loop, resuming his flight pose and zooming at Godzilla, who braced for impact. The midair tackle connected, Ultraman driving into Godzilla with 40,000 tons of force.
As the warrior shoved the monster downwards, they began to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, an aura of heat forming around them. Neither one was phased by the intense pressure. As gravity began to return, Godzilla pushed off Ultraman and grabbed him by the sides. The hero grunted in surprise, but quickly recovered, grappling the atomic beast himself. What followed was a spinning struggle, as the two fought to make sure the other hit the ground first. However, both soon observed that they were going to land in the middle of the ocean. Godzilla in particular knew that they would now be fighting in his element rather than his opponent’s.
Faster and faster, the two giants fell through the sky like a meteor, until finally, they hit the ocean. An explosion erupted from the surface, before being silenced by the water. Massive waves surged away from the site of impact. Godzilla and Ultraman, dazed by the hit but neither of them out, sank through the sea, a distance apart, until finally, they touched down at the bottom, both on their feet. Quickly catching sight of each other, Godzilla growled and Ultraman grunted, before both struck fighting stances.
It was time to end this.
(Resume "Undefeated" from the beginning of the fight)
The two giants immediately charged through the water, Godzilla’s fists planted together for a ram, and Ultraman suddenly leaping up and assuming the position for a flying straight kick. The two blows collided, but it was Ultraman who pushed Godzilla back several hundred meters, until finally, they crashed into an underwater rock formation. Ultraman prepared to push back for another attack, but Godzilla’s claws quickly grabbed onto his foot. Lifting the hero of light upward, the monster king then slammed him into the ocean floor, much like at the beginning of their battle, and just like that, slammed him twice more.
Planting a foot on the stomach of the fallen Ultraman, Godzilla charged his Atomic Breath once again. This time, thanks to the cool water and time without firing, the hole in the monster’s throat was closed, and without pain, he unleashed it directly onto Ultraman’s chest and head, earning a cry of agony from the defender. Leaping off of Ultraman, Godzilla then arced the beam upward, taking the silver giant with it, sending him flying through the water. Kicking off the seabed, Godzilla swam forward at high speed, soon ramming the warrior and sending him even further back before touching down, letting Ultraman hit the floor a few hundred meters in front of him.
Ultraman groaned as he put his hands in the sand and flipped to his feet. Godzilla was already slowly marching towards him. The hero knew Godzilla was a beast of the sea, and with even less sunlight reaching down here, Ultraman was at a double disadvantage. He needed to end this, and quickly.
A thought hit him. He had been liberal with his energy abilities during this fight, mainly to conserve power. Or maybe he had been afraid to use them, seeing as how his bread and butter, the Specium Ray, had been overpowered by Godzilla’s breath. However, from what he knew, Godzilla had never gone up against some other abilities Ultraman possessed. Ultras tended to save their attacks for when a monster was weakened, for the conservation principle, but Godzilla would keep healing, and as far as Ultraman was concerned, this fight had gone on long enough. It was time to act.
Godzilla, too, was ready to finish the battle. He accelerated in speed as atomic energy began to crackle around his body, preparing for a Nuclear Pulse slam. However, before he could reach Ultraman, the warrior pointed out his hands, and two small white lasers shot from his fingers. Godzilla barely felt the effects of the beam until Ultraman raised one arm into the air, and the beam with it. Godzilla was lifted off the seafloor, initially struggling against the psychic pull, before suddenly, a white aura flashed around him, and faded, leaving him completely frozen in mid-water. The Nuclear Pulse went off, but did nothing to help, Ultraman standing amidst the sand blasted away by the shockwave.
Even in spite of his paralysis, Godzilla still managed to grunt in defiance, and movement quickly began to return to him through twitching. Ultraman wouldn’t let him break free. Placing his hands to his chest before raising them, Ultraman generated two spinning, serrated rings of light in his hands. He tossed them at Godzilla, one of them splitting into two identical Ultra Slashes, and maneuvering through the air, one circling around the monster king while the other two flew straight, they reached their mark.
Blood erupted into the water as Godzilla’s severed arms and tail landed on the seabed with a thump.
The monster king screamed a roar of agony loud enough to wake the dead as the Ultra Air Catch’s effects wore off. He landed on his feet, wobbling a little without his tail for balance. Knowing he would black out soon from sheer blood loss if he didn’t finish the fight and reattach his limbs, Godzilla decided to make one last effort. He began to charge his Atomic Breath, but then reared his head back, his entire body glowing blue, and then suddenly brightening to orange-red. Thrusting himself forward, Godzilla, obscured by blood, unleashed his ultimate move: the Spiral Fire Ray.
Seeing the beam coming, Ultraman tucked his fists in at his sides, a line of green energy forming between them. He then thrusted out his right fist, the energy transferring to it and being unleashed in a series of green spirals.
Once again, the two combatants clashed ray attacks. The wounded Godzilla and the exhausted Ultraman, in one last push, once again directed more energy into their beams, but this time, the outcome was the opposite. Slowly but surely, the Ultra Attack Ray pushed through the Spiral Fire Ray, until finally, it blasted through. The green ray hit Godzilla in the head, where it stopped the atomic beam, before being redirected into the monster king’s chest. For a few seconds, it pushed against his body, nothing seeming to happen. The beam cut off, and Godzilla stumbled back… before once again freezing in place.
Ultraman, leaping back, crossed his arms at the wrist, and the Ultra Attack Ray’s timed effect took action. Godzilla suddenly cried out as his body began to radiate energy, not blue or orange, but the same green as the beam. Initially appearing as cracks of light, the light of justice suddenly erupted from Godzilla’s arm and tail stumps, his mouth and his eyes. One final roar of fury and defiance echoed out from the monster king, before, in a flash of light, the energy atomized his body in a massive explosion.
Ultraman looked on as the dust settled, slumped in exhaustion. His Color Timer was once again blinking, and fighting for so long had left him thoroughly tired. But he had done it. He had defeated Godzilla once and for all.
Looking up to the sunlight above, Ultraman raised his hands above his head, and took off. Propelling through the water, he breached the surface, and rocketing to even greater speeds, blasted into the sky.
“SHUWATCH!”

Surge: Wow, our first Death Battle and we’ve already triggered a fanboy community? Oh joy!
Kit: Godzilla is an amazingly powerful monster, and easily one of the toughest opponents Ultraman has ever faced. He would definitely win some scenarios of this fight. However, overall, the Hero of Light’s stats and powers gave him all he needed to defeat the Monster King and more.
Surge: Ultraman’s maximum show of physical strength was less than Godzilla’s, but only by a few thousand tons. In addition, Ultraman threw Telesdon easily, implying his true maximum strength could be higher. Both weighed far less than each other’s maximum lift, especially with Godzilla scaled down to Ultraman’s size, so neither one of them would have trouble throwing the other around. In addition, they even use similar fighting styles. So in hand-to-hand combat, it was virtually anyone’s game.
Kit: And the Atomic Breath was in fact more powerful than the Spacium Beam! Even though they were the same temperature, Godzilla’s beam had far more force behind it, as observed when he used it to fly. However, the beam itself... wouldn’t do much to Ultraman. As you recall, the Ultra Armor was resistant to fire, lasers, and nuclear explosions.
Surge: Effectively giving Ultraman three times the defense against the Atomic Breath. The immensely powerful Red Spiral Ray would probably be able to hurt Ultraman more, but it wouldn’t down him as easily as Godzilla’s other foes.
Kit: In addition, other than strength, it soon becomes clear that Ultraman’s other stats and abilities are far superior to Godzilla’s. The silver giant can fly from Earth to deep space in seconds, and is used to fighting high-speed battles against even multiple opponents, as shown when he was fighting the One Hundred Monster Army. Godzilla’s speed, on the other hand, is inconsistent at best.
Surge: And even if stats are ignored, Ultraman had countless special abilities that Godzilla simply hasn’t dealt with in any of his previous battles, many of which could be used to end the fight in an instant. Ultraman could hack him to pieces with Ultra Slashes, freeze or even explode him with telekinesis, overwhelm him with teleportation, or separate into a bunch of duplicates and gang-beat him to death.
Kit: Now, I’m sure you’re thinking: what about Regenerator G-1? Couldn’t Godzilla heal from any damage Ultraman deals to him? Well, when it came to Ultraman’s ray attacks... a healing factor wouldn’t help. The properties of Ultra Beams, remember, break apart molecular bonds. It's even mentioned in Ultraman Mebius that Salamandora, a monster revealed to be capable of regenerating from a single cell, was previously destroyed on a cellular level by Ultraman 80's beams, preventing it from coming back.
Surge: Godzilla would have a much harder time regenerating when his cells are completely atomized, as shown in his battle with Destoroyah, who had a similar beam... that Godzilla didn’t fare too well against. Thus, the Specium Ray or Ultra Attack Ray, with this property Godzilla’s beams lack, would quite easily pierce his defenses and, if not killing him, inflict serious damage. So we have Godzilla’s heat-and-force beam, while stronger than Ultraman’s basic one, not doing much to his natural resistances, while Ultraman’s molecule-breaking beam utterly demolishes Godzilla, in addition to Ultraman having roughly equal strength and superior speed. I think it’s clear who would come out on top.
Surge: “BUT NO FAIR! YOU SCALED GODZILLA DOWN TO ULTRAMAN’S SIZE! WERE HE AT FULL SIZE, HE’D JUST STOMP HIM!”
Kit: Nope. In truth, Ultraman’s beams would still annihilate a larger Godzilla, and scaling him up would only give the Warrior of Light even more advantage in speed and agility. Besides, other Ultras have defeated opponents much larger than themselves before - most notably Ultraman Joneus, who simply manhandled the colossal Bagon, carrying it into space and killing it via atmospheric re-entry! ... Then there’s the Color Timer.
Surge: While Godzilla could win if Ultraman ran out of time, and there’s a good chance his energy would be spent fighting him, the time limit is in fact... inconsistent. Some Ultras have taken beatings for far longer than three minutes without their timers going off, and in at least one movie, a group of Ultras have fought for even a whole day in Earth’s atmosphere. Even if the rule was enforced, in a battle that had to end in death like this, Ultraman could simply fly up to space, restore his energy, and come back down... like he did in the simulation, really.
Kit: Now, many of you will bring up the sheer Earth’s-crust-puncturing force of the American Godzilla’s beam, or open the mind-screwing can of worms that was Godzilla in Hell. But, as we said, we’ve only used the Japanese tokusatsu movies for this battle’s Godzilla, for the sake of matching him up against the original Ultraman. Besides, if we were to use a truly composite Godzilla the way the fandom does, we’d have to use a composite Ultraman.
Surge: And that would include the likes of Ultraman King, Legend and Noa, who on their own are basically gods, and with their power combined... yeesh!
Kit: Finally, one point really needs to be made above all else. In the end, in spite of Godzilla’s power... this fight was, ultimately, just a normal day for Ultraman. He’s faced monsters as strong as Godzilla before, especially in his later years after his series. Keep in mind that he was 20,000 years old during the series, and a few thousand years have passed in the M78 universe since then, further adding to his experience.
Surge: Even if Godzilla was just as old, which we don’t know for certain since most of his life was spent asleep in the Pacific, Ultraman has been in far more battles than him, owing to his series being episodic while Godzilla is a movie monster.
Kit: Godzilla’s strength, force and healing factor made him a brutal and incredibly tough opponent, but in the end, Ultraman’s astonishing speed, incredible toughness, and most of all his unique and destructive abilities, allowed the hero to triumph over the monster.
Surge: This fight was titanic, but for Godzilla, it atomic bombed!
Kit: The winner is Ultraman.
