Weaknesses and Faults

  • His iconic speed has limitations.
    • Some characters (like E-99, Infinite, and arguably Metal Sonic and Shadow) are faster than Sonic.
    • Can be slowed down by various means including; glue, ice, being underwater, conveyor belts, severe gales or artificial wind (including fans), and heavy shoes (Sonic Labyrinth).
      • Can't swim.
        • Still has nightmares of Labyrinth Zone [13]
    • Can still tire out if he runs too fast or for too long. [14] [15]
  • Super Sonic can lose 10 of his rings if hit by a powerful attack. Even when this isn't the case; Super Sonic can still flinch and experience knockback, which wastes what little time he has in this transformation.
  • Since he's primarily a close-ranged combatant; he struggles against enemies who can protect themselves with spikes, electricity, or fire shields.

Weaknesses

  • Noted to not be the strongest swimmer, Sonic is incapable of swimming properly and sinks like a stone in water. This may be due to aquaphobia (Sonic thinks that if he falls into water, he will be trapped with no one to get him out), though he does not demonstrate that fear very often. In some situations, he can bypass his weakness to water by running or sliding across its surface, leap out of the water with successive jumps, and survive extended periods of time underwater with Air Bubbles.
  • It has been stated that if Sonic does not sleep for eight hours during the night, it will spoil his running.
  • Sonic can also be drained out of his speed due to some other circumstances, such as wearing the Speed Down Boots or touching a Slow-Down Shoes power-up.
