Samuel Thomas "Sam" Wilson, was born in Harlem, New York City, to minister Paul Wilson and Darlene Wilson. While he had a happy childhood, having a natural affinity for birds, Sam also excelled as a top-grade student. But a teenage Sam's life was turned upside down when his father, who accepted his son to have the same religious ideals as himself and provided him books on comparative theology, was killed when he attempted to break up a neighborhood fight. Consumed by grief, Sam joined the United States Air Force, serving two tours as a pararescueman to see the world until the death of his wingman Riley forced him to retire and become a grief counselor. Sam was later drafted by S.H.I.E.L.D. for his skills to test the EXO-7 Falcon, eventually joining the Avengers.
