Description[]

Attack on Titan vs. Neon Genesis Evangelion. The biggest and most angsty monster killers will shake the world.

Introduction[]

Wiz: Eren Yeager, the Attack Titan.

Boomstick: Shinji Ikari, EVA-01's pilot.

Wiz: Throughout the years, anime has been responsible for many things that will be featured in this battle; means of scaled-up combat, teenagers with massive burdens and traumas...

Boomstick: And becoming the embodiment of the world's unmaking. Cause boy oh boy, did these two trailblaze in all those departments. He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.

Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armour and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle!

Eren Jeager[]

Wiz: Although the story of Attack on Titan has finally been fully adapted in both English and Japanese, we fell it necessary to point out that major spoilers are synonymous with this series.

Boomstick: So let’s start with what everyone knows; that humanity has been forced behind three walls to protect them from the unsavoury fate of being eaten alive. At the hands of what, you already know? Titans.

Wiz: With their massive sizes, near-unkillable natures and lack of need for actual nutrition, the Titans very nearly eradicated mankind overnight. Not even the three mighty walls – Maria, Rose and Sina – could protect humanity forever, especially with the appearance of the Colossal and Armoured Titans revealing that the threat of Titans could very much escalate.

Boomstick: With resources shrinking and humanity all-but ready to throw in the towel, you would have to be someone with an undying yearning for freedom to see the outside world to keep fighting. And that was the goal of a young boy, who desired to live up to the translation of his last name.

Wiz: This was Eren Yeager, and unfortunately, his desire for freedom would soon grow to include a desire for bloody revenge. That always tends to grow when you witness a family member suffer a brutal death.

  • Background
    • Age: 19
    • Height: 5’7
    • AKA: Suicidal Bastard, the Attack Titan
    • Affiliations: 104th Cadet Class, Scout Regiment, Yeagerists
    • Relentlessly pursues freedom
    • Proves the prowess of English Dubs

Boomstick: Show a little sympathy Wiz, he watched his mother get eaten by a Titan. And not just any Titan, but one with a shit-eating grin! How would that make you feel?

Wiz: Eren made a vow to eradicate every last Titan from the face of the Earth, joining the military to learn all things related to Titan-slaying. Closely followed by his adopted sister, Mikasa Ackerman.

Boomstick: Key word, “adopted”. At military bootcamp, Eren learned two things. One, how to better fist-fight, which would only become relevant later down the line, and two, how to use ODM Gear. Gas-propelled, grappling-hook bearing, multi-sword storing harnesses to combat the Titans at their heights, getting in precise, fatal blows to their napes.

Popup: Eren’s training gear was sabotaged by Keith Sadis, who wished to spare him the risk of dying in war. Eren was able to show his compatibility with it regardless.

Wiz: Graduating the 5th best out of his Class, Eren was all-but ready to take the fight to the Titans, on his way to joining the most active military faction, the Survey Corps.

Boomstick: But first he had to help take back Trost. And recover from that lost leg. And get out of a Titan’s stomach - oh boy.

Wiz: But even as he faced becoming just another casualty in the hopeless fight against the Titans, Eren discovered that to kill a Titan, you’d need to become one. And that is exactly what happened.

Boomstick: With a bolt of lightning, Eren transformed into what he swore to kill – a Titan. Standing at 15 meters tall, and initially known as the Rogue Titan, the Attack Titan was an extension of Eren’s vow to kill every enemy he can across.

Wiz: Boasting amazing strength befitting its size, Eren was finally able to put his hand-to-hand mastery to good use against the Titans, employing powerful haymakers, guarding and body-breaking grapples. Like other Titans, the Attack has the ability to recover from practically any injury, which is an ability Eren retains even as a human, short of a displaced head. Good thing to, since he often has to bite massive chunks of his own hand out in order to transform.

Boomstick: Which he can do fast enough to intercept an oncoming cannonball. Meaning he reacted at Mach 4 (Zamasu Chan).

Wiz: Upon getting his teeth on a “Hardening” serum…

Boomstick: Cough-innuendo-cough.

Wiz: Eren gained the ability to harden his Titan’s flesh. It can be as focused as making organic knuckledusters for his fists or as wide-spread to turn the entire body into a crystalline barrier normal Titans have no chance of breaking themselves.

Boomstick: And later, he got the ability to improve this, through the consuming of the Warhammer Titan, which is the power to create more refined structures of hardened material. Oh, and what is the Warhammer Titan? Like Eren, a Titan Shifter, and she was hardly the first he encountered.

Wiz: The Colossal Titan, Armoured Titan, Female Titan, Beast Titan and Cart Titan are all members belonging to this unique Titan classification, being humans who can summon Titan forms. Initially thought to be traitors to all of humanity, turns out their “betrayals” were far more selective than first thought.

Boomstick: Turns out, Humanity outside of the walls really wasn’t long gone, but in fact thriving. At least, the country of Marley was. Long ago, the Titans were once under the control of the Eldians, thanks to a slave girl Ymir mysteriously gaining the ability to create Titans, an ability passed on down through years of cannibalism. After the Eldian Empire used the Titans for conquest and oppression, one of their Kings decided to repent, trading off the power to the Marleyians whilst retreating behind the walls with their brainwashed subjects.

Wiz: Bit of a bad move though, since now Marley could use those same powers their own empire, all while deriding the Eldians still under and needed for their reign as devils in the biggest hypocrisy of the series.

Boomstick: They’ve sicced Titan after Titan on the tiny island the remaining free Eldians live on, simply for the sake of harassing them, and now have plans to completely wipe them out to claim the resources buried deep within the island.

Wiz: And so Eren found his target changed, from merely the Titans to the entirety of the outside world. However, his mission remained to obtain freedom for him and his people.

Boomstick: Even if he couldn’t die as a hero, and instead had to live long enough to become the villain.

Wiz: This intense drive for freedom led Eren to stage a master plan, so that he could come into the possession of the Founding Titan, the master-code to all Titan powers and the means to control them.

Boomstick: And where was this power that Eren obtained? Why, already in him of course – long before he even knew it existed! For you see, the Attack Titan actually had a unique power, a power said to be the exact opposite of the race-controlling Founding Titan. The ability to see the memories of all future holders.

Wiz: But Eren seemed to be the last holder, so what could he do?

Boomstick: Why, influence the prior wielders by choosing which memories to send back of course! That’s right; he influenced the past.

Wiz: More than that in fact. When finally connected to the Paths symbiotic with the Founding Titan’s power, on account of his half-brother’s royal blood, Eren was able to mentally time travel to the point where his father, the Attack Titan prior to him, was ready to take the Founding Titan from the Wall’s current ruler. When Grisha had a crisis of conscience, Eren, as a self-created memory, ensured that he went through with it.

Boomstick: Before completing this stable time loop by having his father turn his past self into a Titan and gobble him up, getting both the Attack Titan and stolen Founding Titan. Seriously, time loops are some of the most existential plot twists there are, especially because Eren never really had any freedom thanks to his future self.

Wiz: All that was left for him to do was convince the spectre of Ymir, the conduit for Titan powers, to rebel against the control of royal Eldian blood, and, to protect his homeland, activate the Rumbling.

Boomstick: The Rumbling is pretty much the Eldian Empire’s nuclear stockpile. Those walls erected around their last bastion are in fact Colossal Titans, which are sent out to stomp the entire outside world into dust in a process estimated to take only three days. No distance, no ocean, nothing will stop them. And if you somehow avoid getting trod on, you’ll just get cooked to death by the insane heat they produce.

Wiz: With the Founding Titan now in his control, Eren is practically a god, connected to the Paths dimension which is said to be unaffected by time, contains an infinite number of metaphysical strands between the Eldian people and even let the user glimpse or interact with alternate timelines.

Boomstick: But the real spectacle is the massive Titan form Eren takes to oversee this apocalypse. 350 meters tall and 700 meters long, it is the single largest Titan in existence, consisting of a gargantuan spinal collum serving as a lower half for a comparatively smaller skeletal body. And inside the head of that skeletal body is Eren’s own head, from where he directs both the Rumbling and what he summons as personal bodyguards.

Wiz: These are the past users of the Nine Titan powers. From the Armoured, to the weapon-bearing Warhammers, to the animal-attributed Beasts, even past Attack Titans, all commanded via lengths of hardened material to create a grotesque version of trench warfare.

Popup: The Final Titan is considered a combination of the Attack, Warhammer, Beast and Founding Titans.

Boomstick: And even if you’re able to blow apart this Final Titan, Eren will keep going with a Colossal Titan form of his own. Because, both literally and figuratively, he is a slave to his own desire for freedom.

  • Feats
    • Reacted to cannon and artillery fire
    • Stole the Founding Titan via mental time travel
    • Initiated the Rumbling and killed 80% of humanity
    • Lifted a giant boulder as the Attack Titan
    • Final Titan outclasses the Colossal Titans in size and strength
    • Used the Founding Titan’s power one last time without royal blood
    • Defeated Annie Leonhart, Reiner Braun, Bertolt Hoover, Lara Tyber, Zeke Yeager

Wiz: In fact, becoming the Final Titan ended up badly effecting Eren psychologically, filling his mind with information from the past, present and future. And whilst the Rumbling is an outcome he believed he had no choice but to see fulfilled, the murder of potentially billions of people was not something he handled very well.

Boomstick: He retreated behind a mental front of being his young, innocent self again, soaring through the clouds. Don’t be mistaken, he was still himself beneath all that, it was just very much regressed. Even then, Ymir could help out with continuing to direct his Founding Titan powers. Not to mention, there’s that damned mysterious worm-thing which will aim to reconnect with Eren in the event they are severed, so long as Eren went un-killed.

Wiz: This outcome was achieved through the combined forces of the remaining Titan Shifters, the wiser of the Marleyian Military, and Eren’s own friends, of whom he had made enemies with his change in demeanour and actions which, whilst understandable, where too horrible to let happen.

Boomstick: In the end, it was his ever-loyal companions, Armin Arlert and Mikasa who had to put Eren down, before he could wipe out the reminder of humanity. But as it turns out, like all masterful planners, Eren had accounted for this.

Wiz: Faced with knowing the horror he would unleash thanks to the Attack Titan’s power and his future self’s machinations, Eren gladly welcomed any attempt to stop him, even if that meant becoming the enemy to even those he loved most of all. Refused to remove their desire to stop him with the Founding Titan, Eren kept the visage of the villain not just to make it easier to strike the final blow against him, but also to ensure his friends would be hailed by heroes by the world which formerly disliked them.

Boomstick: Brandon Yates’ Zero Paths Left was a good choice by a paying fan, because Eren pulled off a Lelouch and united the world against the villain he became, giving his friends a chance to advocate peace for the Eldians via the goodwill killing him brought.

Wiz: Ultimately, it may have been a temporary solution, for human conflict is inevitable in our natures, but whatever his incarnation, Eren disregarded this fact. For the price of freedom is heavy for the one who seeks it for themselves or others, and even in the giant shadow of the Titans, the attack Eren launched to pay that price was bigger still.

EVA-01[]

Wiz: Okay…so if the previous part was chocked full of spoilers, then this one is chocked full of utter confusion, but make no mistake; still spoilers going forwards.

Boomstick: It all started with an Impact…except maybe not, because that was actually the Second Impact, and I’m pretty sure the First Impact was what gave rise to life on our planet, in what was called in the Bible the Story of Adam and Eve.

Wiz: This First Impact was the inspiration behind the Second, as a mysterious conspiracy group called SEELE believed it was the key to helping humanity reach a state of perfectness. However, trying to force the power of God is what often makes it work against you.

Boomstick: The Second Impact went haywire, devastating most of the world and even misaligning the Earth’s orbit so that seasonal changes couldn’t happen again. Over half of humanity was killed, as was most of the wildlife around the globe.

Wiz: Unfortunately, it is in human nature to try again at a mission despite catastrophic first failure. This time around, there would be knew components, and new control measures. One of these was a group of children, with deep, often unknown ties to the Impact conspiracy. And the Third Child is Shinji Ikari.

Boomstick: Wait, so is he the third of these kids we’re introduced to, or is his title the Third Child.

Wiz: The first one, because is more ways than one, this is ultimately a story about him.

  • Background
    • Age: 14
    • Height: 4’11
    • AKA The Third Child
    • Son of Gendo and Yui Ikari
    • Deep seated self-worth issues
    • Designed after Nadia La Arwall

Boomstick: In terms of parental abandonment, Shinji got the bucketload. His dad and mom are both key figures in an organisation linked to the Impacts, NERV, and they haven’t exactly been in his life. In fact, his mother seems to have disappeared off the face of the planet, and his father…well, he’s at the top of emotionally absent lists.

Wiz: So it was surprising for Shinji to receive a request to come and meet his father. And even more surprising when he came face-to-face with a giant mecha.

Boomstick: This was an Evangelion, and despite his own title, Shinji was chosen to pilot the Unit-01.

Wiz: And why? Because it was the EVA containing his mother’s very own soul. This is the reason behind the extreme compatibility Shinji has with the EVA, and why he’s able to pilot it in the first place. Oh, and did we say mecha? What we actually mean was the reanimated and modified remains of an Angel.

Boomstick: And what is an Angel? Why, those things destroying what’s left of humanity of course. Since it takes one to kill one, NERV took the lower half of the Angel Lilith, one of the Angels used to cause the Second Impact, and covered it from head-to-toe in armour plating. A Dummy Plug is where the pilot is sat, which is then inserted into the body of the EVA from the back of the neck. Once filled with LCL, the acronym of which is unclear, the Pilot is able to breath without oxygen and possesses mental control over the EVA.

Popup: Unit-01 is unique in origin to the other Evas, as whilst they are the clones of the First Angel, Adam, 01 was made from the lower half of the Second Angel, Lilith.

  • Evangelion Unit-01
    • Largest height: 200 meters
    • Massive speed and strength
    • Armoured body
    • AT (Absolute Terror) Field
    • S2 Engine
    • Arsenal
      • Progressive Knife
      • Pallet Rifle
      • Handgun
      • Gatling Gun
      • Positron Rifle
      • Sonic Glaive
      • Spear of Longinus
      • Spear of Cassius
    • States
      • Berserk Mode
      • God EVA
      • Initial Arousal Mode
      • The Radiant Giant

Wiz: Whilst the height in-universe for the EVA’s widely fluctuates, the highest recorded figure is 200 meters, whilst the smallest is around 50 meters.

Boomstick: So yeah, a towering colossus either way. But surprisingly nimble and agile when it needs to be. It can run across countryside in Mach speeds and even dive kick its opponents. And despite it looking rather lithe compared to other giant robots or Kaiju, its armour plating is strong enough to withstand small-scale nuclear blasts.

Wiz: Even then, the armour is simply there to keep the modified Angel under control, along with all the cybernetic implants. Really, the EVA’s ultimate defence is the AT Field.

Boomstick: And that’s an acronym that is known, and it is Absolute Terror. Maybe because it’s what protects you from things that are absolutely terrible.

Wiz: Well, more metaphysically, since an AT Field is the manifestation of one’s very soul, or what allows someone to define themselves as an individual, protecting them from the intrusion of another person’s feelings.

Boomstick: So, it’s an emotional detachment barrier?

Wiz: Well, yes, but still a very formidable physical defence. Even if it’s destroyed by another AT Field, or an incredible source of energy, it can quickly reform so long as the organism producing it is still alive.

Boomstick: So, the EVA’s got defence narrowed down, and as for offence, oh boy does it have an arsenal as large as itself! And that’s literally, because weapons normal people can use are scaled up massively for EVA use.

Wiz: Like a knife, which is built to vibrate extremely fast to enhance its cutting power, perfect for slicing through Angel flesh.

Boomstick: As for firearms, there’s a handgun and the Pallet Rifle. Modelled after a Steyr ACR, it is Shinji’s best means for fighting from afar. Oh, hang on, I’m forgetting about the minigun! ‘’And’’ the Positron Rifle.

Wiz: Using the entirety of Tokyo-3’s electrical power to fire just one time, it can pierce through an AT Field thanks to the properties of positrons, which are basically antimatter to electrons.

Popup: Concept art showed the EVA would have used two giant katana-like blades.

Boomstick: He even has a double of staff weapons, like a Sonic Glaive, which is basically the Progressive Knife on a stick. But the other two are basically weapons from the Heavens themselves.

Wiz: First, and most notably, there’s the Spear of Longinus. Once thrown, it will travel at relativistic speeds, can be summoned back to hand under certain circumstances…oh, and it can pierce through AT Fields with no issue whatsoever and pin godlike beings in place indefinitely. Even replicates of this spear can do this.

Boomstick: And then there was the Spear of Cassius. Possibly similar to the Spear of Longinus in abilities and purpose – hint, hint – although EVA only used it as a standard melee weapon.

Wiz: You be correct in thinking that such a massive mechanised organism would require a lot of energy to function, and you’d be right. A long cable connected to its back provides it with an indefinite power source, and when severed, the EVA maintained enough energy for 5 minutes of independence.

Boomstick: But through a bit of cannibalization, the EVA was able to gain itself a legitimate Angel core, an S2 Engine, enabling for truly unlimited energy usage. That would have come in useful for whenever the EVA entered its Berserk Mode. Or in other words, the spirit of Yui going totally ape to protect her boy.

Wiz: Soon, however, came the time to initiate the Third Impact, and EVA-Unit 01 was the key component in its completion. By combining the fragility of Shinji’s mental state, the Spear of Longinus, a small force of other mass-produced EVAs, the S2 Engine of itself and the other EVAs, the EVA-01 became little more than a god, and Instrumentality began.

Boomstick: In the most mind-freaking sequence ever produced in anime history, EVA-01 produced a giant Anti-AT Field, which broke down the AT fields of each individual human, turning them into LCL liquid and amassing them all together into a single consciousness. And it was ultimately Shinji pulling the reigns; thanks to the lack of any real emotional care from his superiors and peers, he decided to hell with other people, just put them all together.

Popup: The EVA achieved the Anti-AT Field before Lilith's introduction to Third Impact, implying that her role specifically was combining all the disembodied souls into the Black Moon, and to expand EVA-01's; this is supported by the Mass-Produced EVAs undergoing a similar process to EVA-01 with Longinus replicas, at which point the Anti-AT Field is said and shown to expand.

Wiz: But as he himself underwent Instrumentality, Shinji came to realize the utter hollowness of such as existence. In penance, he rejected Instrumentality, giving others the option too as well, even if they meant they had to live with the bittersweetness of other people.

Boomstick: And, you know, in a giant apocalyptic landscape overlooked by a giant girl’s head. But fortunately, someone saw fit to rebuild this canon. And Shinji along with it.

Wiz: Let’s just say that whilst Shinji’s, and company’s, cracks where still there, they were notably more secure than the original incarnation.

Boomstick: Heck, this time around, Shinji didn’t start impact because of his own flaws, or even knowingly. And instead of becoming an outright god, the EVA entered a different state of being; the Pseudo-Evolution. It gains a vortex-like halo, those Wings of Light, and upon absorbing Rei and EVA-00’s core, becomes the Radiant Giant. Like this, that vortex-like halo of its increases in size and potential, almost enough to invert the entire surface world, and be considered a near Third Impact.

  • Feats
    • Caused and controlled several different Impacts
    • Helped hold up a descending Angel
    • Uncovered the Black Moon with an AT Field
    • Tanked Israfel's self-destruction
    • Moved in perfect sync with Asuka’s EVA-02
    • Keeps pace with Pallet Rifle round dodging Angels
    • Defeated the Angels, Kaworu Nagisa, Gendo Ikari

Wiz: Unfortunately, shortly afterwards an actual Third Impact was triggered, continued off the Near-Third Impact stopped with the use of the Spear of Cassius. So yeah, not many people left in this new world too happy with Shinji, even though it wasn’t entirely his fault. Heck, maybe if everyone hadn’t been so damn mysterious, he might not have been tricked into triggering a Fourth Impact! Seriously, too many impacts.

Boomstick: This Impact was unique from the others, for it didn’t just involve the EVAs and the other components, but an Anti-Universe. I take back what I said before – this is the most mind freaking thing ever put to anime. Seriously, like End times a million!

Wiz: This is Minus Space, said to be the realm of gods. Here, physical laws do not exist and the space rewrites itself based on those inside of it, creating a false world for them to interact with. It’s even the home of an EVA which also embodies this selective-perception, and is vital to the completion of the Additional Impact.

Boomstick: This was Absent Father Extraordinary Gendo’s final chance to initial an Impact that would fulfil his goal of finally reuniting with Yui. But Shinji knew that perhaps causing the apocalypse just for a reunion wasn’t an excusable course of action.

Wiz: There was something at play in Gendo’s act, and it was something Shinji himself didn’t really understand. You see, the entire message of Evangelion, what it wanted to tell us, was that before we can give love, we have to love ourselves first.

Boomstick: Yep, it’s Only Love in the end. Gendo realized he could have had that, if only he’d been there for Shinji growing up. In perhaps Shinji’s greatest victory, he broke through the icy shell Gendo had built around himself and set him down the right path of atonement.

Wiz: And with his parents properly reunited, they helped Shinji complete a new vision – a world without Impacts, without Angels, and without EVAs. The real world, where he was finally ready to live his life with love.

Interlude[]

Wiz: Alright the combatants are set, and we've run that data through all possibilities.

Boomstick: It's time for a Death Battle!

The Battle[]

Setting: Tokyo-3

Eren, with his ODM Gear, swung through the tall buildings of the city, looking around himself with a raging expression.

Eren: Where is it? Where’s that “purple Titan”?

He got his answer almost immediately; as he swung around the corner of a building, he suddenly found himself being stared down by the visage of EVA-01. His jaw went slack at the sight of it, and from the cockpit, Shinji could see him.

Misato (V.O.): There’s the Target! Get him!

Shinji: But it’s just a dude!

Misato (V.O.): Well, wherever he goes, an Angel seem to appear! It’s too much of a wild card – eliminate him!

Shinji gritted his teeth is displeasure but set his mouth and put a glare on his face, which Eren also did as he got over his shock.

Eren: So…we meet at last.

FIGHT!

Out of the building Eren had swung around, the EVA’s open hand smashed out of it, intending to swat Eren out of the sky. With a burst of gas from his gear, Eren launched himself over the swipe. He fired a grappling hook and it latched onto the upper arm of the hand that had tried to hit him, and he reeled himself forwards. The EVA’s hand shot forwards to try and grab Eren, but he increased the reel speed and straightened himself forwards mid-air to glide between the fingers. As he went, he tried to slice the digits, but found that his blades shattered against them with futility. He grunted in annoyance as he hit the EVA’s arm running, pulling out two new blades in the process.

As Eren ran up the arm, the EVA tried to smash him with its free hand but Eren propelled himself forwards with a gas burst. He eventually reached the upper area of the EVA’s arm, pulling him up to its shoulder with his grappling hooks. He barely avoided getting slapped by the EVA’s hand and had soon managed to swing around towards the back of the EVA’s neck.

Eren: Die!

He rappelled himself towards the EVA’s nape – and coinciding with his knowledge on Titan anatomy – where Shinji in the dummy plug was stationed. Upon reaching the surface, Eren began repeatedly slashing away at it – with each swipe, a blade was shattered, and Eren replaced it as he spent his still-equipped blade. Soon, he had been able to gradually carve a gouge into the EVA’s nape, and was striking loud enough for Shinji to hear.

Shinji: How’s he doing that?

As Eren roared and went for a dual slash, the EVA bent forwards, out of reach of the attack and allowing its hands to rise up to try and clap around Eren. With a burst of gas, Eren shot upwards, but the edge of the pressing-together hands caught his legs. They were crushed/ripped off his legs as he shot upwards and Eren bit back a scream of pain. Having been clipped, his momentum went askew and he plummeted towards. Ignoring the pain, Eren noted how low he was on Ultrahard Blades.

Eren: Looks like I’ll need something stronger…but first, I need to get back up there!

With a burst of steam, his legs regrew and he fired the grappling hooks into the EVA’s knee as he fell. Shinji exclaimed in surprise as his opponent’s recovery and immediately had the EVA try swatting him. But once again, Eren was able to avoid the strikes and swing around the EVA’s giant body, all the way up to above its lightly damaged nape. This time around, he dropped one of his swords and raised his hand to bite into it.

With a flash of yellow light, which Shinji gaped at, the Attack Titan fell from the sky with a yodelling roar. His massive body collided and latched onto the back of the EVA’s head, providing heavy and surprising enough to force it to stagger forwards. Hardening his fist, the Attack Titan started punching at the gouge, causing a crack to spread out from it. Feeling the impact in his bones, Shinji yelled and the EVA reached behind itself a second time. This time, with the larger target, it was able to grab the Attack Titan, holding it upside down in a fist as it brought it to its visor. It struggled and roared in the gripe, biting and punching at the nearest finger, eventually snapping it in two. Shinji shrieked in pain and threw the Attack Titan into the air, and as it fell down, pulled the EVA’s leg back for a kick.

It failed to pulverize the Attack Titan however, on account of its whole body suddenly hardening. Furthermore, as the EVA’s foot travelled forwards through the Tokyo-3 streets, the hardened flesh of the Attack Titan spread outwards. A massive wall anchored into the ground and surrounding buildings, bringing the EVA’s kick to a sudden stop. The sudden stop caused the EVA’s other leg to kick upwards, and it comically toppled onto its back. Shinji squinted against the cloud of dust which the fall kicked up and saw the Attack Titan charging across the EVA’s chest towards its face. Acting quick, he had the EVA draw its progressive knife and stab down at the offender. The blade pierced through its shoulder and through its body, piercing it standing upwards on its own chest. But the Titan body suddenly hardened into another crystalline wall, keeping the EVA’s hand tethered to its chest. Eren leapt from the Hardened Titan, immediately summoning another to keep running to the EVA’s face with. Before Shinji could comprehend what just happened and tear his attention from freeing the EVA’s body parts, the Attack Titan was using Hardened fists to rain blows onto its face. The plating was cracked, teeth were sent flying and the lenses of its eyes were misted up, blinding Shinji, who was struggling to overcome the pain. An attempted grab at the Attack Titan with the EVA’s free hand missed as it ducked down, before leaping forwards to wrap its arms around the EVA’s throat. With this grip, and the Hardening wall it additionally summoned, the Attack Titan began to strangle the EVA. Shinji felt the pain in his throat and gagged, unable to coordinate the EVA to retaliate, and his vision started to fade.

Fortunately for him, the EVA entered its Berserk State. With a powerful roar, the Berserk EVA finally freed its hand and foot from the Hardened bindings and surged back to its feet, the Attack Titan dangling from its neck. Both EVA hands closed around the Attack Titan and pulled it away, looking down at it with pure anger. With a single squeeze, the EVA crushed the Attack Titan to pulp, and Eren was launched out by the sudden compression of the Titan body. He was unable to recover, stunned by the G-Force, before the EVA’s jaw snapped around his whole body, up to his neck. His head, severed from the rest of the engulfed body, flew through the air.

This, however, was only the head of a certain Eren Yeager, one in a world where Eren had not come to possess the power of the Founding Titan. The head of the latter Eren was suspended in the mouth of the Final Titan, from which he had a view of Tokyo-3 from a distance away from where he was stationed. He spied the purple, thin form of the EVA-01 standing on the grassy hills of the city’s outskirts, and knew Shinji was staring him down from the cockpit on instinct alone.

Eren: There really was no other way…for my victory…this was my one path.

With a mental command, he had his army of Colossal Titans march straight in the direction of EVA-01.

Misato (V.O.): Shinji, give them hell!

Shinji had the EVA raise its Pallet Rifle and fire a barrage towards the approaching Colossal Titans. The projectiles punched massive holes in the Titans, and proved powerful enough to send them tipping backwards into the ones behind them. As the first rank of Titans fell into disarray, EVA-01 shot the ones now viewable. Some of the rifle shots tore straight through their heads, ensuring they couldn’t recover. But those hit merely in the body started to rise back up and continue towards the EVA.

The pallet rifle ran out of ammo all too soon, and the EVA threw it far enough so it obliterated the face of one of the Colossal. It replaced the rifle with the Gatling Gun and soon unleashed a sweeping barrage around himself. These shots proved powerful enough to mulch the Colossal Titans several ranks in. However, the sheer number of Colossal Titans proved large enough to start coming from other directions around Tokyo-3, their clouds of destruction proving indicators. As Shinji could only prioritize mowing down a certain section, a group of them were able to reach him, smashing trampling the surrounding countryside to get to him. Shinji noticed too late to turn the Gatling Gun around, so brought himself time by having the EVA kick the nearest Colossal Away. Aiming the Gatling Gun, he fired a close-range stream which shredded the up-close Colossal Titans. However, the intense heat of the Titans started to melt the thin multi-barrels of the Gatling Gun and soon the entire thing had bent in half. EVA-01 threw the remains into the Colossal horde and pulled out the Handgun, scoring headshots on the nearest Colossals. When it clicked empty, the EVA grabbed the Sonic Glaive and started slicing through the still-coming Colossals – when it began to melt, he stabbed it through the necks of three Colossals at once.

Despite the dispelling corpses around him, Shinji knew more Colossals where still on the way. And so did Misato.

Misato (V.O.): Use the Positron Rifle! Cut a way through those freaks and get that long-haired freak!

Taking the weapon from its back, the EVA aimed it towards Eren’s Final Titan. Even with the Colossals slowly encroaching on him, Shinji calmly fired the Rifle. The beam of energy vaporized or blew back a triple line of Titans, all the way to the Final Titan. The beam passed harmlessly through the giant ribcage of its body, but the path towards it was made.

Dropping the Positron Rifle, the EVA bolted through the path, fighting against the head of the surrounding Colossals. Even as some stepped out of line to intercept, they were knocked aside with powerful EVA punches, with one getting grinded against the ground when the EVA slammed it down. Soon, it had covered the distance, and the Final Titan loomed before the EVA.

Shinji: You’re going - !

A flash of light suddenly emanated from above the Final Titan and the albino Beast Titan appeared, hurling chunks of hardened flesh towards the EVA. Shinji: - down?

Whilst tiny, the projectiles peppered the giant with holes and threw it off-balance. Past Warhammer Shifters appeared alongside the Beast Titan, firing from crossbows or hurling throwing weapons, all of which struck the EVA and caused it to fall over. Before it could rise, a Colossal Titan brought its foot down on its chest, and another on its shoulder, and soon EVA-01 has been buried beneath the feet of the Colossals.

However, with an activation of the AT Field, EVA-01 freed itself, pushing away the Colossals and clearing a circle around itself, enabling it to get back up. With the newly unveiled Field, Shinji blocked the projectiles from the Shifters but with the AT only set up in front of the EVA, the hand of the Final Titan was free to swing out and strike the EVA. It was sent flying up through the air, with Shinji screaming as it started to plummet downwards. It crashed onto the Final Titan’s back, and all types of past Shifters instantly swarmed it. In particular, several Colossal Titans formed from the spinal spires of the Final Titan and pinned the EVA down from all angles as the other Shifters attacked the EVA’s body.

Eren: I alone cannot overcome you, but this army can.

A series of massive shadows suddenly fell over the Final Titan and it looked up to see the Mass-Produced EVA Units flying towards the site of the battlefield. The Past Shifters turned to ready themselves for engagement, but that was when the Spear of Longinus shot straight down from the sky and stopped inches above EVA-01’s chest. The shockwave of its re-entry sent the Shifters flying, their tethers snapping from the Final Titan. Even the Colossal Titan Shifters were blown back and EVA rose back up, grabbing the Spear of Longinus in the process. The Mass-Produced EVAs grabbed EVA-01, hoisting it into the air, but as they did, Shinji lashed out with the Spear of Longinus.

The attack severed the Final Titan’s head and it dropped to the ground as the Mass EVAs configured around EVA-01 and stabbed it with the Spear, transforming it into its God state. From it, an Anti-AT Field spread out, turning the Colossal Titans to LCL as their AT Fields were removed. Up in the air, Shinji almost felt at ease watching the grotesque army beneath him burst to liquid.

That sense of ease faded when the severed head of the Final Titan exploded with light and from it grew a Colossal Titan body. Someone, it seemed to resist the Anti-AT Field, certain enough to grab the nearest Mass-Produced EVA and pull it down. This broke the formation elevating EVA-01 to godhood and it, and the other ATs, fell to earth. The Mass-Produced Units suddenly found their hands full as, out of the stump of the Final Titan still remaining, burst the Mysterious Organism. The Organism and the ATs struggled against each other, leaving the now standing EVA – free of the Spear – to face Eren’s Colossal Titan.

Shinji let out a war-cry within the cockpit and had the EVA charge forwards, grabbing the Colossal Attack Titan around the chest to try and tackle it. Instead, the Titan wrapped its arms around the EVA’s body from above before bringing its legs up to wrap them around the EVA’s waist. The grapple caused the EVA to collapse forwards and still holding onto the EVA, the Titan pulled forwards using the hold around its back and chest. A grotesque crack filled the air as the EVA’s full armour nearly shattered. In particular, its dummy plug was forced out the back of its neck. The door open and Shinji tumbled out, hitting the back of the EVA with a cry of pain and shock. Looking up, he found himself stared down by the scowling visage of the Colossal Attack Titan. Its jaws opened and Shinji saw the head of Eren Yeager within, listless and attached to cords of sinew. Shinji’s jaw dropped and he went clearly catatonic at the sight, even as the Colossal Attack Titan leaned down, clearly intending to bite him in half.

Instead, Shinji found the will to move, darting backwards as the open mouth lunged at him. And with its independence granted by the spirit of Yui and the endless energy of the S2 Engine, the EVA reared upwards, breaking free of the Titan’s grapple. Shinji jumped into the relative safety of the wrecked dummy plug, and the EVA interlocked its hands together into a double-handed punch straight towards the still-open mouth of the Attack Colossal.

Seeing the attack smashing through his Titan’s face towards him, Eren closed his eyes, accepting his obliteration into nothingness. The EVA’s attack finished blowing apart the Titan’s face, leaving its corpse to fall backwards. In the distance, the Mysterious Organism perished in turn, revealing the crushed Mass-Produces EVAs in the process. Every remaining Colossal Titan vanished, leaving the wrecked EVA, and its equally exhausted pilot, to kneel in the small sea of LCL. Standing on the LCL, the figures of Rei and Ymir beside each other looked upon the site.

KO!

Outcome[]

Boomstick: So that was an Attack on Evangelion, aye? Or is it…Execution on Evangelion? Evisceration on Evangelion has better alliteration though.

Wiz: This battle felt like a true slugfest in several regards, especially with Eren’s sheer metal-eating determination. But it was no real secret that his version pre-Rumbling didn’t really stand a chance against the EVA.

Boomstick: Simply put, the different in height was way to big and the Attack Titan didn’t really have a way of working around it. The last time it tried fighting a massive opponent, it got yeeted across a whole town. Eren’s ODM Gear would likely have been effective at climbing this colossus, but harming it was a different story. Even the Thunder Spears used by other ODM wielders would likely have been ineffective, considering the EVA’s armour can withstand nuclear blasts and the self-destruction of an Angel.

Wiz: That was a blast worth 112 megatons of TNT (KaiserWombat), and that was without the use of an AT Field. Thunder Spears, by comparison and if we really high-ball it, can harm Colossal Titans, with a transformation into one by Armin Arlert yielding only 1 megaton (Kinjorex101).

Boomstick: So it was likely to be, what many people call, a stomp. But we all know there’s something else to consider.

Wiz: Indeed - the power of the Founding Titan presented a much different debate. Not only is the Final Titan the EVA’s superior no matter their height, but it has control over entire legions of Colossal Titans and past Shifters.

Boomstick: So Eren had a lot he could throw at Shinji, and his connection to the paths meant that he could spend as he wanted planning a means of offense. It wouldn’t count as actual attack speed mind you, but still, plenty of brainstorming.

Wiz: For example, one thing we can hypothesize Eren doing to combat EVA-01 is by having the Colossal Titans acting as “bombs”. Once again taking Armin’s Final Transformation of 1 megaton, and combining it with how there was said to be tens of millions of them with an estimation of 90 million, then an explosion with all of them going off at once would be 104 teratons of TNT.

Boomstick: That would be enough to overcome the EVA’s standard durability and even the AT Field’s, but getting all those Colossal Titans up close to the EVA, or even Eldians to turn into the Titans, wouldn’t exactly be practical. Plus, the EVA’s weapons meant it could attack safely from a distance and compared to Colossal Titans was much nimbler.

Wiz: Especially since Eren’s Attack Titan reacted at around Mach 5 to block a cannon shot, compared to Pallet Rifle shots which travel at Mach 14 (KaiserWombat).

Boomstick: Hell, he likely could have scoped Eren in the Final Titan’s head with the likes of the Lance of Longinus.

Wiz: And speaking of, since we give Eren a form he could only achieve with outside help from Zeke and Ymir, then so too does Shinji get one from the Mass-Produced EVAs in the form of God EVA-01. Even without the Lilith-Rei, it possessed an Anti-AT Field capable of turning organic lifeforms to LCL and tore its way out of Lilith-Rei, which is so large, its wings move with energy worth 2 exatons of TNT (Kingo the sixth).

Popup: Using another calculation of the Colossal Titan’s transformation, which takes into account the whole body of the Titan instead of the blast radius, and multiplying by the probable number of Wall Titans, is 21 exatons. The flaws of the strategy mentioned before still stand and this still falls below the 2 exatons of Lilith-Rei.

Popup: Eren’s sheer determination may have allowed him to resist the Anti-AT Field, as he used the Founding Titan after losing Zeke’s Royal Blood and convinced Ymir to rebel against the First King’s will; this is largely hypothetical and ultimately does not impact the battle.

Popup: Adam’s Anti-AT Field could break down even single-celled lifeforms, so could have even worked on the Mysterious Organism.

Boomstick: So God EVA could ultimately crushed Eren, any of his Titans and singlehandedly turn the tide of the Rumbling. Or even singlehandedly as a normal EVA. Eren was a tenacious, multi-talented, manipulative individual, but he had to face the End since the EVA’s strength, speed, arsenal and godly aspects meant there was no chance for him to Rebuild.

Wiz: The winner is Shinji Ikari, pilot of Evangelion Unit-01.

Trivia[]

  • Connections: Both are anime teenagers with deep seated psychological issues who, having lost their mothers, battle against giant, humanity-threatening monsters named after mythological species (Titans and Angels, respectively), using massive beings they controlled from the backs of the neck (the Attack Titan and EVA-01 respectively). Both have also been the epicenters for certain cataclysmic events (the Rumbling and Third Impact, respectively). Both are also close to genetically modified humans (Mikasa, a human modified to emulate Titans, and Rei, who is a clone of Yui Ikari).
  • Animation Style: 2D.
  • OST Idea: 'Hunter's Impact', referring to Eren's last name, the various Impacts, and how both characters slay giant monsters.
