Darth Sidious, also known as The Emperor, whose real name is Sheev Palpatine, is the main villain of the Star Wars media franchise. He is the one responsible for the near-extinction of the Jedi, the cause of the Clone Wars and the creation of the Galactic Empire.

He has appeared in the 95th episode of DBX where he has fought against Master Xehanort from the Kingdom Hearts series.

History[]

Sheev was born to an aristocratic family on Naboo. Intrigued by the Dark Side and the Sith, young Palpatine spent his days secretly hunting for dark artifacts before running into Hugo Damask, a Muun businessman who would soon reveal to be Darth Plagueis. To prove his worth to the Dark Lord, Palpatine killed his father and pledged himself under Plagueis' teachings. Plagueis would teach Palpatine many Force powers, including the secrets of life and immortality, before Sidious had decided to take his master's place as Dark Lord of the Sith.

While training with Plagueis, Sheev resurfaced to the public and built up a political power among the people. After killing his master in his sleep, Palpatine would successfully achieve the position of Senator of Naboo, speaking for the entire planet in the Galactic Republic. Through cunning and skill, Palpatine worked his way to Chancellor of the Senate before using the Clone Wars as a way to solidify his position as Emperor of the Galaxy. During that time, Sidious would take on two apprentices, Darth Maul and Tyranus, before setting his eyes on young Anakin Skywalker. After converting Anakin to his cause as Darth Vader, the two purged the Jedi into nigh extinction as they ruled the Galaxy from their Empire. Over the next 2 decades, Palpatine would rule from the shadows with an iron fist before setting his sights on Luke Skywalker, whom he planned on becoming his final disciple and true successor. His plans were cut short, however, when Vader had a change of heart and killed his master by throwing Sidious into the reactor core of the second Death Star.

Palpatine's adventures did not end here, however, as his great mastery over the dark side of the Force along with the knowledge on how to cheat death by manipulating the midi-chlorians allowed him to revive himself in a clone body that contained his spirit. There was just one catch: Palpatine's spirit was too strong for the clone body to contain, causing serious degeneration. Residing on the Sith planet Exegol, Palpatine had to be moved and sustained by machinery before carrying out the orders of Operation Cinder. In 35 ABY, Palpatine issued a threat of revenge against the Jedi and the Resistance, prompting First Order leader and fallen Jedi Kylo Ren to seek him out on Exegol.

Palpatine promised to give Kylo control of his Sith fleet, the largest starfleet in the history of the galaxy, which he had spent the past several years amassing. He was later revealed to be the grandfather of Rey, and wanted her to give into the dark side and kill him so he could possess her body, using her as a new vessel for his spirit, and she would rule the Final Order as Empress Palpatine. When a redeemed Ben Solo stopped her from submitting to his wishes, Palpatine used the power of their Force dyad to revitalize himself and regenerate his damaged body before trying to wipe out the Resistance with his Force lightning. With Ben's help, Rey managed to destroy Palpatine for the last time.

  • Orchestrated his rise to power by having his predecessor removed from office, then having Count Dooku arrange the creation of the clone army before deceiving the Senate to give him emergency power to deal with the Separatist army
  • Considered to be the Sith'ari, basically the Chosen One of the Sith
  • Stated numerous times to be the most powerful Sith Lord in history. Some Sith Lords of comparable strength are some like Vitiate, who consumed Nathema, and obtained this much energy, enough to blow up Earth's Moon 10 times over, and after absorbing Ziost, he has likely doubled. This would place Sidious at Small Planet level. In addition, he has feats such as wiping out entire groups of starships, and the surfaces of whole planets with Force Storms. These Storms took Luke, Leia, and an unborn Anakin Solo through the Light Side to turn his creation against him.
  • Considered to be the greatest duelist of all time and perhaps the greatest Sith Swordmaster in history
  • Hid his Sith nature from the Jedi Order for years even in plain sight
  • Successfully turned Anakin Skywalker and Count Dooku to the dark side
  • Successfully took over the galaxy and reforming the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire

Flaws[]

  • Arrogant, and Overconfident. Tends to underestimate his opponents, especially Yoda and Luke Skywalker
  • Almost defeated by Mace Windu if Anakin did not intervene.
  • Admits that his master Darth Plagueis is more powerful than him, thus why he kills his master in his sleep instead of directly
    • Was unable to unlock the secrets of manipulating Midi-chlorians
  • Only engages in Lightsaber Combat to "humor" his opponents
  • Considers all of his underlings, including all of his apprentices; powerful force users, as nothing but expendable and easily replaced
  • Somewhat cowardly
  • His complex plan of having Darth Vader train a secret apprentice, Galen Marek, to gather his rivals ultimately lead to the creation of the Rebel Alliance and the fall of the Empire (unsurprisingly, he was defeated by Marek himself despite the help of his Imperial Guard)
  • Was overpowered by Darth Vader and thrown down the cavern of the second Death Star leading to his first death
  • His meticulous plans of the rise of the Empire nearly came to disaster numerous times
  • Some of his stronger abilities, such as Force Storm are only available to his Reborn forms (Clone Bodies)
  • When Palpatine revived himself from his first death, the clone body he used was physically impaired because it could not handle Palpatine's spirit (Sequel Trilogy)
  • Ultimately destroyed by his granddaughter Rey.
