History[]

Originally a warrior of the Nightbrother clan on the planet Dathomir, inhabited by the dominant Nightsister witchcraft society led by Mother Talzin, Maul was taken under the guidance of Darth Sidious to be his Sith apprentice. Maul eventually makes his presence known to the Jedi when ordered by Sidious to capture Queen Padmé Amidala as part of their deal with the Trade Federation, managing to mortally wound Qui-Gon Jinn before Obi-Wan Kenobi slices Maul in half at the waist, with the bifurcated Sith falling to his assumed death.

But Maul survived, though his mind was broken from the ordeal as he ended up on the junk planet Lotho Minor. During the Clone Wars, Maul was found by his brother Savage Opress and brought to Talzin to restore his mind. Maul, feeling cheated out of the glory he was to play in Sidious's master plan, enacted revenge on Obi-Wan while establishing a criminal empire on Mandalore. Though he got his revenge on Obi-Wan, Maul's criminal empire fell apart when Sidious intervened. Sometime after losing the Siege of Mandalore, Maul took up residence on Dathomir and became the shadowy leader of a new criminal organization, Crimson Dawn, known for being ruthless in nature. Maul acted in the shadows and bided his time to make his move during the starting days of the Rebel Alliance against his former master's Empire. After meeting Ezra Bridger and failing to make him his new apprentice, he found Obi-Wan on Tatooine and was quickly cut down, but he passed peacefully once Obi-Wan assured him that the one he was watching would end the reign of the Sith for good.

Trivia[]

  • Despite it being debatably his most famous attribute, in and out of the universe, Maul is not the first Sith to wield a double-bladed lightsaber.
  • A copy of Maul was used to test Vader, and while he brought the Sith to his knees, he was ultimately defeated
  • Maul was designed by Iain McCaig, who designed him based on the concepts of his "worst nightmare", requested by George Lucas. One of his initial concepts featured a design where Maul was portrayed as a pale white figure covered in blood-red ribbons. The design was scrapped as Lucas felt it was too scary, though it was later used as a basis for the Nightsisters (specifically for Mother Talzin).
  • Darth Maul wears an earring in The Phantom Menace, but this was not planned. Actor Ray Park put on a small, silver earring before sitting down to do the Darth Maul makeup, and only noticed it later. But George Lucas said he liked it, so the earring stayed. In the same interview, Park said he saw the earring as an aspect of himself, not of the character - and in an expanded universe where every gadget and costume usually has a story, there has never been a canon explanation to give this particular detail a role in Maul's history. Ray Park also had a hand in developing Maul's fighting style, and asked that the hilt of Maul's double-bladed lightsaber be lengthened so that he could use it more efficiently.
  • Most people believe that Darth Maul is all Ray Park, but it actually took two performers to bring Maul to life. The stunts and combat performances of the Sith apprentice were provided by martial artist Ray Park, but he didn't provide the dialogue. Maul wasn't even voiced by Park; the character's voice was provided by Peter Serafinowicz, who's best known for his work in Guardians of the Galaxy. The voice actor didn't have all that much to do, as Maul has three total lines in the whole film.
  • Maul's last words to Obi-Wan were a foreshadowing of Obi-Wan's death in A New Hope, the first film in the original Star Wars trilogy.
  • In "Twilight of the Apprentice" Maul was originally supposed to be killed by Darth Vader but that was ultimately changed so that Maul survived until he met with Obi-Wan on Tatooine where he finally met his death. This foreshadowed Maul's death in Star Wars Rebels.
  • Ironically, while Maul in his last moments believed Luke Skywalker would destroy the Sith and avenge him, the one who would end up doing so was none other than one of his replacements as Darth Sidious' apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, the boy that Qui-Gon Jinn protected from him years ago.
  • In The Rise of Skywalker, Darth Sidious said that all of the spirits of the dead Sith were part of him but as Darth Maul was thrown out as Sith, his spirit probably never merged with his former master and was not wiped out when Sidious was finally killed by Rey.
  • Maul dying in Obi-Wans arms at the end of Twin Suns serves as a parallel to the deaths of Qui-Gon Jinn and Satine Kryze who also died in his arms in a similar pose.
    • Ironically, both Jinn and Kryze were killed by Maul.
