Clarence Wendle (simply known as Clarence) is the titular protagonist of the namesake Cartoon Network series, Clarence. He's an optimistic young boy who has many adventures alongside his two best friends, Sumo and Jeff.

History

In the pilot episode, or in Pilot Expansion, in which Clarence as an elder told the tale, Clarence came to school as a new kid and gave out fliers to everyone in his class to come over his place. However, nobody came, leaving him alone as his mother Mary went away, until Jeff called saying that he wanted to come over. Excited out of his mind, Clarence allowed Jeff to come and welcomed him as a close friend, only to see that Jeff was an uptight square. Suddenly, Sumo came over and asked for Clarence to cut his air, and while they did, the two did all sorts of activities, stopping at seeing Jeff inside watching TV alone. They wanted to show him how to have fun, and trained him to open a piñata and all for the "mystery piñata time". As Jeff busted it open, they were all stung by bees, and in the end, became close friends. That's how it all started.

  • Laughed off falling from the attic ceiling onto the ground.

    • A perfect example for this is Tuckered Boys, in which him, Sumo and Jeff stayed up for an entire night while having to live through hallucinations until morning time struck, in which they fell asleep.

  • Easily guessed the price of detergent once while watching a show, and even Jeff got it wrong, and Jeff is the same person who is much smarter than him and Sumo.

  • Came up with a plan to steal Jeff’s toy and replace it with a fake replica.
  • Was able to use many things in his house to make his own casserole.
  • Crafted a very detailed “spaceship” from a cardboard box, wrote an entire story and trashed the house all in one day.
  • Made multiple traps he thought of himself while cracking corny puns, and his traps were actually formidable.

      • In the same episode, he and Sumo helped out in the boiler room, claiming that they “don’t need to get the coal out, but redirect the steam into the upper deck to keep it from destroying the main chamber pot”.
  • Helped Sumo and Jeff create a quick-wit movie based on turtles being the president... though it was kind of based off a movie they saw.
  • Schemed his way into making Sumo and Jeff into being friends again in many ways.

  • In Money Broom Wizard, Clarence was helping someone win a game, and obliviously threw a basketball across an arcade to where it helped Jeff win tickets.
    • Later in the episode, when Clarence showed Belson his disco ball, Jeff accidentally pointed his, well, laser pointer, at the disco ball and hit everyone playing laser tag unintentionally... and won.
  • In Nature Clarence, this luck hax helped him find Sheep’s Bridge, it made matches fall out of the sky, he found a “hot tub” out of nowhere AND had Nature Kate rescue him from peril all in one episode.
  • In Lizard Day Afternoon, as he chased a lizard, he was able to get free chips, find money in a bush and get a ride around the block in a fancy ride.
  • In The Forgotten, Clarence had a bus come to him immediately despite his doubt in it arriving.
  • In Goldfish Follies, he crossed the street while not getting hit by ANY cars.
    • Despite most of the episode confirming to be fictional, it might as well be consistent, given his other feats.

Flaws/Weaknesses

• Remarkably stupid; his moments of stupidity are more prominent than his brilliance.
  • Very naïve and wholesome... sorta.
    • In Detention, Clarence had a birthday card that said "One more year closer to death", before showing an image of the Grim Reaper. Likewise, he didn't understand it.
    • In Too Gross For Comfort, he got out a bag of marbles and called them "eyes".
  • Is playfully obnoxious to where it can worsen matters.
    • In Fun Dungeon Face-Off, he stole Jeff's fries just so he could trick him into playing with him.
  • Clumsy to high degrees.
  • Extremely airheaded and dimwitted.
  • Due to this, he can become very incompetent.
  • Easily distracted and manipulated due to his oblivious and child-like nature.
    • Sometimes ends up as a pawn in Sumo's street-smart schemes.
  • Despite his obliviously fearless nature, he’s prone to cowardice.
    • Like so, he can get frightened easily at times, has a plethora of phobias and mostly ends up freaking out before coming up with an idea.
      • In Spooky Eyes, he was afraid of ghosts after the one time of him having to go to the bathroom and seeing one. During the same episode, he ran away from an old man in a ghost costume instead of facing it.
  • Can become overly heroic, selfless and forgiving for others, even opponents or people who do mean harm to him.
    • In Balance, he at first treated Balance with respect no matter how cruel he was... until he went to the length of insulting his friends and as Clarence realized something was up with him.
  • Is very reckless and impulsive, not thinking before he acts.
  • In Puddle Eyes, he was blinded by mud and thought it was his skin, while using his imagination to figure out his surroundings, getting it all wrong while letting it go over his head.
  • In Neighborhood Grill, he had no idea Ms. Baker, or any adult at his school, had an actual life outside of the facility.
  • In Hairence, he used all of the green shampoo for a hair-made figurine of himself, and claimed “there’s no more!” as if he never used it all himself.
  • In Breehn Ho, he wanted to be a mermaid even if it wasn’t a playable character, and STILL thought his pirate name was Mr. Tobias.
• Pacifistic.
• Incredibly dense.
  • In Clarence Gets A Girlfriend, it's shown that he's not that much of a romance expert. When Sumo pretended to be his girlfriend for an example, he hinted at Clarence to put his jacket down on the puddle so he could walk over it. Despite this, he suggested jumping over it, said he can throw him over it, and said he should walk around it. After that, when Clarence started his date with Ashley, he saw a picture of two kids drinking out of one cup, so he tried doing that, but spilt the chocolate milkshake on her. In default, he threw the jacket over her out of worry so she could "walk on it".
• Sometimes lazy.
  • This side can make him messy, as shown at school in Belson’s Sleepover, when he revealed his messy locker of random items.
    • In most episodes that reveal his room, it's shown that the room is left unattended and unorganized.
    • He sometimes becomes bored very, very easily, thus turning into a slacker. This is consistent in most episodes.
• Can become very emotional over petty matters, even to where he can become psychopathic.
  • In Hoofin’ It, he became very sensitive for the annual pig race and how Butterscotch was being chased, going to the length of taking her place.
  • In Lil Buddy, he had to miss five minutes of recess and took it to heart in an overdramatic way, and blamed it on his Lil Buddy doll to where he buried it, only to become edgy and emotionless afterwards. Even after that, he got an entire Lil Buddy get-up to express his bipolar insanity at the time.
  • In Where The Wild Chads Are, due to his hunger for adventure and roughing it in the woods, he dumped all of their important supplies in a river just to get it, even lying to Chad just so it could drag on.
• Despite being oh-so powerful, Clarence is still a human kid, and can be killed by normal human means.
• Gets intimidated and/or distracted easily.

Trivia

• Clarence was originally voiced by Skyler Page, until he was fired in 2014 for alleged sexual assault.
  • It was confirmed by Skyler Page that Clarence is supposed to be a cartoon version of himself when he was a child. However, it is likely false due to characters, such as Jeff and Belson, being based off of staff members and Skyler barely working on the show before he was fired.
• He has 1 buddy star as seen in Clarence's Millions after Ms. Baker took his second one.
• According to Clarence, everything is amazing like a baby dolphin, as heard in Zoo.
• It is unknown why Clarence has only two front teeth while more is in the bottom, this was notable in The Forgotten.
• He's been sent to detention about 3 times, first since Detention.
• Multiple times throughout the series, his eyes are shown being much smaller than they naturally are.
• Clarence's name appears in the Steven Universe/Uncle Grandpa crossover, Say Uncle, only by either the series name and also the character.
  • However, the character alongside with Jeff, Sumo, and Belson would later made their only crossover (cameo) appearance in Uncle Grandpa's short "Grampies", as Belson is the only Clarence character outside that group who was able to talk.
  • He was mentioned again in a Steven Universe episode Onion Friend, only by having a similar appearance of a young version of Yellowtail (who married Vildilia) from the same show. Though much like Yellowtail and Onion, they both has the similar shaped head of Clarence.
• In Patients, Clarence's last name is Wendle.
  • Although in the end of the fourth comic, his last name was spelt as Wendell.
• While he appears to have no ears, he put his finger in his "ear" in The Break Up.
• The tan lines on Clarence is very similar to Greg from Steven Universe.
  • In Birthday, it's shown that he was born with it as he showed his friends pictures of him as a baby, however in reality, one cannot be born with tan lines, therefore this is considered as inaccurate.
    • In the same episode, his favorite color is brown.
• In Jeff's Secret, he revealed to have a rash on his back which shapes like the state of Texas, however this was not always seen or visible in all between the past and current episodes were he usually shirtless, this usually a coincidence.
