Interlude[]
Boomstick: Oh boy, I'm so excited! Today we've got the leading ladies of 90s fighting games duking it out! And you don't wanna mess with these two!
Wiz: Do try to contain yourself. But you make a very good point. When we think of characters that set the stage for many more ladies to enter the ring, we think of Chun-Li, the strongest woman in the world.
Boomstick: And Black Orchid, the God-slaying founder of the Disavowed. He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick!
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win... a Death Battle.
Chun-Li[]
Boomstick: There are a lot of lovely ladies out there who can kick your ass in a bunch of different ways. But trust me, you can never go wrong with the original ass-kicker, good ol' Thunder Thighs herself, Chun-Li.
Wiz: As the daughter of a martial artist police officer, much of Chun-Li's defining characteristics come from her family. After seeing a film featuring the legendary martial arts icon Bruce Lee, Chun-Li had a passion for martial arts.
Boomstick: And you can tell she made the most out of it. She learned from both her dad and this other guy named Gen. By the time she was eighteen she joined Interpol, those international police people, I think. And she did what I've been doing for years, and started looking into the disappearance of her dad, Dorai.
Wiz: Unfortunately for her, she would learn that the ruthless dictator M. Bison murdered Dorai. This ignited a fire inside Chun-Li, she wanted nothing more than to get revenge on Bison for his heinous acts, not simply the murder of her father, but the corrupt company he ran, Shadaloo. Chun-Li's time with Interpol was spent investigating Shadaloo activity, and she knew something was wrong with them all along.
Popup: Contrary to popular belief, Chun-Li is not the first playable female character in a fighting game. Yuki from Onna Sanshirou - Typhoon Gal debuted in 1985, predating Street Fighter's debut.
Boomstick: Good thing Chun-Li has the martial arts and police training on her side to take down bad guys. She's learned a lot of Chinese martial arts, so much so everywhere you look, it just says her fighting style is "Chinese martial arts". But she made the most of it and put all of 'em in a blender and made her own fighting style.
Wiz: Which includes all of her iconic attacks, the Hyakuretsukyaku, where she'll kick so fast that her legs appear as a blur. The Spinning Bird Kick, which continues to defy gravity to this day. She's got incredible physicality too, able to perform somersaults and flips to use attacks like Hazanshu and Sen'enshu without issue. Come to think of it, Chun-Li never seems to get disoriented performing techniques like that at the rate she does.
Boomstick: Well, duh. She's one of the best ladies in fighting. Don't forget she can do a backflip and kick you in the back. And she performs jumping kicks so effectively that you get pushed up each time she lands a kick on you. And we can't forget the Focus Attack, where she puts her attack into a single concentrated blow that's so powerful it causes her opponents to collapse. But she does need to hit her opponent with it.
Wiz: But don't forget Chun-Li can harness her inner willpower to perform attacks too. The Kikoken is her classic projectile, but she can up the ante with Kikosho, a blast so powerful it gave Bison a hard time during one of their battles. Her Kikosho even became one of her V-Triggers later on, her other V-Trigger, Renkiko, grants Chun-Li additional damage and extra hits depending on what attack she is using.
Popup: Outside of fighting, Chun-Li is also a skilled markswoman, ultimately finishing 6th in an international shooting competition.
Boomstick: And don't forget her Senretsukyaku, basically a super version of her iconic kicking move. And speaking of those, Chun-Li has Super Moves she can perform. While her Senretsu and Kikosho are also Super Moves, she has other ones too! When she wants to beat you up, she can unleash the Hosenka or the Houyokusen. They're like the perfect cocktail of all her classic moves.
Wiz: Well your pronunciation game seems to have certainly improved. But you're right, Chun-Li is well-versed in her martial skill, which has made her into one of, if not, the strongest woman in Street Fighter. She's proven she can go toe-to-toe with seasoned fighters like Ryu. And due to her constant hunt for Bison, Chun-Li has regularly battled some of Street Fighter's finest.
Boomstick: Oh and we can't forget the time she picked up and threw a couch at Vega. Who said all of her strength was in just those legs? Though many of her strongest accomplishments come from those legendary legs, she can kick people through solid brick walls without even trying. This can even work on the heavier street fighters like E. Honda, who weighs over 300 pounds.
Wiz: Chun-Li has dodged the iconic Sonic Boom technique, which moves fast enough to break the sound barrier. Plus she can easily dodge bullets. And it can't be understated that her attacks themselves are quite fast, since they appear as simple blurs to the human eye. But despite her immense capability, she is still light on her feet.
Popup: While she is kind and friendly, Chun-Li has demonstrated that fighting brings out her competitive side, which she often uses to befriend her fellow competitors in the World Warrior Tournament.
Boomstick: She's also pretty tough. She powered through constant cuts and bleeding from Vega's claws, and didn't even realize it until they were in the middle of their fight.
Wiz: Though perhaps her greatest accomplishment of all was she, and a few others, brought down the criminal empire of Shadaloo. Although she never did defeat Bison on her own, she certainly got close, especially when she used a Kikisho against him, resulting in the formation of a crater. With Chun-Li's considerable willpower and the fact she was fighting the man who murdered her father, she was likely going all out.
Boomstick: Taking the diameter of the crater, it's clear Chun-Li's Kikosho unleashed over five thousand tons of TNT. Damn, it's a wonder Bison even survived that. But unfortunately, Chun-Li never did avenge her old man. But at the very least, she made sure Bison fell to the people she knew could stop him.
Wiz: Despite being involved in multiple World Warrior Tournaments, she was defeated by other competitors, though admittedly this isn't Chun-Li's most notable downside. Though she is headstrong, Chun-Li can be drawn into dangerous situations without a second thought. Although her reasoning is well-intended, it can lead to her being defeated, manipulated by cunning opponents, or falling for traps.
Popup: Although she defeated Urien, it is implied that Urien simply let her win, and was holding back in their fight.
Boomstick: Yeah, Chun-Li is a goody-two-shoes without a doubt. But she never did finish all of her training, but it wasn't her fault. Losing her dad put the breaks on that training, Gen disappeared, which meant she lost her other mentor, she didn't stay with Interpol long enough to complete all of her training before beginning her parental vengeance quest, and never did become a fully accomplished officer.
Wiz: When it comes to fights, in particular, Chun-Li's fighting style gears her towards close-range combat, with only her Kikoken serving as a long-range projectile. While this isn't a major issue, those who specialize in projectiles, or simply long-range combat, can prevent Chun-Li from using her best moves.
Boomstick: Plus, since she is a woman of the law, she holds back from time to time. She's had the opportunity to kill Bison multiple times but never took his life, instead, she hoped he would surrender to the police. But time and time again, Bison would escape, leaving Chun-Li to chase after him.
Wiz: But Chun-Li never gave up, and never needed to bloody her hands. Although not responsible for Bison's demise, Chun-Li was still regarded as a hero for her accomplishments, and eventually retired from fighting to teach future generations the way of martial arts, while still doing police work on the side. She could finally live a more fulfilling life, one that freed her from the vengeance and pain she knew all her life.
Chun-Li: I remember the days when I was the only female fighter around. I'll have to train harder if I want to stay on top!
Black Orchid[]
Wiz: Few people alive know the truth behind the mysterious secret agent Black Orchid. Everything about her is top secret, even her given name. Although her history is well covered, there are few things we can definitively prove. She is the older half-sister of Jago, a warrior from Tibet. And, perhaps most famously, she's a killer.
Boomstick: Oh man, I love that song! But yeah, Black Orchid embodies all that is badass in a woman. If I could marry someone like her, I'd probably be set for life, no more ex-wives! Though since a lot of Black Orchid's history is top secret, we have to go by what we do know. American-born to a soldier named Jacob, who sadly lost his life fighting the good fight. Goddamn it, why do the badass women also not have their dads around? Parents are important!
Wiz: Orchid served in the Special Warfare Department, a wing of Homeland Security. Although her early years were defined by a troublesome upbringing, it was her potential that got her invited to the SWD, where she diligently served for over a decade, completing missions in Africa, Chechnya, China and Russia. She was easily one of their best agents, backed by her family's history, but one day she learned her father had been murdered.
Boomstick: And who was it that killed Orchid's dad? Ultratech, aka Evil Walmart, or just Walmart, take your pick. Anyway, Orchid was determined to get as skilled as possible to handle a mission against Ultratech, and once she had her decade of experience, Orchid went on a deep-cover mission to unravel the truth about Evil Walmart and find out what happened to her old man. Orchid was handling the mission pretty well, until she learned others in the SWD were being manipulated by the AI leader of Ultratech, ARIA.
Popup: During her time with the SWD, Orchid became multilingual, learning how to speak fluent Chinese and Russian.
Wiz: In true evil organization fashion, Orchid was framed for crimes didn't commit, and she lost her reputation and had to go on the run from everyone she previously trusted. Fortunately for her, being left to her own devices worked out, and she used both her experience from the SWD and her father, she was able to establish her own spy faction, the Disavowed.
Boomstick: Thanks to some technical data she swiped from Ultratech, she was able to develop her signature weapons. Her batons. While she did have tonfa back in the day, for this battle we are looking primarily at the reboot timeline of Killer Instinct, but we'll include info from the original timeline where it applies.
Wiz: Well, they are more akin to electrified eskrima sticks, sorta like Nightwing. They seem to be made out of some kind of electricity or plasma, it's hard to tell. Regardless, they are Orchid's primary weapons in a fight. And they're quite effective weapons too, able to cut through the likes of Fulgore units employed by Ultratech, which makes sense given both are derived from Ultratech technology.
Boomstick: If Orchid feels like zapping people or making the battlefield an electrical hazard, she can turn her sticks into makeshift electrical discharges, which would hurt more than the sticks themselves. But if her opponents are at a distance she can launch Lasaken, which is basically a small electric projectile from her screaming sticks.
Popup: By using Shadow Energy she obtains during a fight, Orchid can use her Eskrima sticks to conjure a vertical beam of electricity.
Wiz: Eskrima sticks. Orchid also carries stun grenades and night vision goggles, so she's well equipped to handle most scenarios without even needing to raise a finger, but when she does enter a fight, you better watch out. No Killer Instinct is complete without their Combo Breaker, a classic. But she has plenty of moves for dealing with her enemies in a fight. She has Whiplash, an overhead cartwheel that launches opponents into the air.
Boomstick: And she can do that to heavyweights like Fulgore. But my favourite technique of hers is Flick Flack, where she does a spinning handstand and kicks her opponents like a never-ending clothesline. Man, that sounds familiar. And when she wants to close the gap between her and her unlucky opponent, Orchid can zoom toward them with Tiger Slide, which sounds more like a Jago move rather than an Orchid move.
Wiz: Well, they do share partially the same blood. But Orchid does have something Jago doesn't, the Firecat. One of the reasons others saw potential in Orchid was due to a power she inherited from her grandmother's DNA. And it turned out to be that Orchid was able to manifest energy in the form of a cat.
Boomstick: Affectionately called the Firecat, but guess what! We can pet the kitty this time! But you still have to watch out, because the Firecat has a lot of ways Orchid can use it in a fight. Namely the fact she doesn't have to transform into a kitty cat every time. She can summon them from behind her to attack foes, kinda like that Strider ninja dude.
Popup: It is implied that Orchid being able to transform into the Firecat could be an extension of her life force.
Wiz: She primarily summons them through emotional action, again hinting at the life force connection of her powers. The power of these fiery felines is quite formidable, even just the flames they leave behind can burn down whole buildings. But Orchid herself can easily transform into the Firecat for pouncing attacks and even taking a bite out of her enemies.
Boomstick: Orchid has taken on some pretty big names in Killer Instinct. How about the fact in the original games she beats Eyedol, that cheap son of a bitch got what was coming to him. Orchid claimed victory against Gargos too! Plus in the reboot, she's been able to beat other tough guys like Shadow Jago, Sadira and the CEO of Evil Walmart herself, ARIA.
Wiz: This proved impressive, considering ARIA is one of the most technologically advanced fighters in Killer Instinct, but Orchid has proven time and time again she can defeat foes that seemingly appear well out of her league. Defeating ARIA also carries with it the fact Orchid can contend with her impressive speeds.
Boomstick: Remember how fast ARIA was? If you don't, she got jumped by Glacius and was able to avoid Ice McFlurry's attack in a nanosecond. And Orchid is pretty comparable, after all, she's won the Killer Instinct tournament before, which means she's faced off with most of the characters in the roster.
Popup: Although it is a No Mercy, and thusly cannot be avoided, Orchid, like the entire Killer Instinct roster, are capable of reacting to Fulgore's satellite laser.
Wiz: But Orchid isn't without weaknesses. For example, her Firecat abilities aren't an infinite resource, especially if they are tied to her life force, and exhaustion could render her unable to summon the Firecat or transform into it. It also appears Orchid hasn't displayed the ability to use the Firecat transformation for any longer than a single attack, so it's more appropriate to think of it as a brief transformation attack.
Boomstick: Orchid also doesn't have a lot of long-range options. While she does have her projectiles and her kitty cat, that's pretty much it. Orchid performs a lot better in fights with her close-range moves, but hey, she isn't helpless, and given her skills over a whole decade, I'd say she can figure out a way out of any situation. And she did lose to Jago, but Jago was possessed by Omen, so it's debatable if Jago did the fighting, or Omen made him act out of character.
Wiz: Black Orchid would fight to the utmost, ultimately revealing Ultratech's wrongdoings. Reuniting with her long lost brother, and ironically, joined ARIA alongside Earth's defenders during Gargos' invasion of Earth, being part of the Alliance that would cancel the invasion and defeat Gargos once and for all.
Boomstick: I don't even have a funny quip for the end here, I just think it's great that Orchid got a happy ending.
Black Orchid: One step closer to flushing out Ultratech.
DEATH BATTLE![]
The world is no stranger to invaders, conquerors, anyone who fancies the world as their personal playground. The strongest, bravest and most noble of souls put their lives on the line to defend their home, so that all may live to see tomorrow. Although it comes with recognition and attention, not everyone seeks the glory of being considered a hero, some wish to simply continue doing good deeds so that all may benefit.
With the world starting to emerge from darkness into a much brighter one, life persists and the heroes and villains are written into the stories of history, often deifying them that they seem grander than even they thought themselves, but some simply approach with modesty, humbled, but not embracing it.
In a vibrant village located somewhere in China, a group of children all perform in tandem, each following their instructor's command, using every ounce of their being to strike poses and gestures befitting a martial artist. Though they are young, each of these children diligently follow their instructor's example, who performs the moves as naturally as one draws breath.
As the lesson concludes, the instructor sits themselves on the floor, looking over the many students under their tutelage. It was a happy feeling, but alas, the children were dismissed by their instructor, and all of them hurried in different directions, leaving the instructor to her lonesome. Closing her eyes, she concentrated on her breathing as though meditating.
Very carefully and intently, she listened to her surroundings. The birds chirped, the leaves on the trees rattling in the wind, and the water occasionally dripped into the pond below. Everything was serene, tranquillity had been achieved, and for fleeting moments, it was ephemeral bliss. At the moment, she heard footsteps approaching her slowly, opening her eyes, she turned around to see a well-dressed man approaching him.
"They want me for another shift?" the woman inquired. However, instead of a quick response, the man was silent for a moment longer than expected, this got the woman's attention, rising to her feet. "This is more than a simple shift" the man responded. He reached and grabbed a tablet device no bigger than his hand and held it towards the woman. She approached the man and took hold of the tablet.
With a press, the device turned on, displaying a humanoid robot's projection, which certainly raised some questions, but the video was allowed to play out. "Greetings, officer. I have been informed by several parties that you are a woman of considerable conviction and accolades, especially in the downfall of Shadaloo. It is for these reasons that I wish to entrust you with a task, should you choose to accept it." The machine's voice was distinctly feminine.
The woman seemed taken aback at first, but the message did not bear any hostility, and so she continued listening. "Since you have taken down dangerous individuals in the past, I believe someone of your talent and skill should be able to handle an individual I have had difficulty in trying to apprehend for some time now."
The projection fizzled for a moment before showing a woman dressed primarily in green, sporting dark hair. "This woman was dishonorably discharged from the US Military for several offenses. However, despite my attempts to apprehend her, she has evaded me and avoided facing her crimes. Ultratech would be most grateful if she was captured. Unfortunately, I cannot provide any further information, however, she goes by the codename Orchid, you will find her hiding in Eastern Europe."
As the projection relayed the information to the woman, she carefully observed what information she could learn that wasn't covered in black ink. The scarcity of the information raised some concerns, but it was sufficient. The woman looked at the projection and affirmed she would proceed with the mission. The machine which appeared in the projection graciously bowed. "We owe you a great debt, Chun-Li." the machine spoke before the projection fizzled out.
Seeing that her police training and time spent as an officer was suitable for the mission, Chun-Li picked up a phone and pressed a few buttons before raising the device to her ear. In a matter of seconds, she was speaking with someone, and a short time later, a helicopter arrived, with its door opening, inviting Chun-Li to board.
Sometime later, in Eastern Europe, suburbia was completely desolate, buildings were broken and blown out, things were completely war-torn. However, despite the state of the area, one building, in particular, housed a secret outpost of sorts, disguising itself behind the destroyed buildings of the neighbourhood, hidden in plain sight. Although the buildings were abandoned, there was one person still there, a woman who was operating a series of computer screens.
Constantly monitoring activity and communications, the amount of information on the screens and the speed at which they were conveyed was extraordinary. The woman at the keyboard appeared in the zone, able to press the buttons on the keyboard at impressive speeds, all without having to lower her eyes. Suddenly one of her computer monitors noted the approaching arrival of a helicopter, which alerted the woman.
With little time to waste, Black Orchid closed off her computers and turned her attention skyward, where a helicopter arrived overhead, Orchid, raising her arm over her face, tried to get a look at whoever was inside the helicopter, and although she thought for a moment she saw multiple people, someone jumped from the helicopter and landed, it was Chun-Li, her blue outfit was very vibrant and eye-catching.
"So, you're Orchid, I take it. As an officer of Interpol, you are under arrest. I urge you to come quietly, or there'll be a bit more trouble than you'd bargain for." Chun-Li demanded, eyeing Orchid and seeing that her appearance matched the projection of her. "Getting straight to it, huh. Well, this should be quick." Orchid responded as she drew her batons, and activated the eskrima sticks.
FIGHT!
(Cue Paikuhan Active Skill - Dragon Ball Z: Dokkan Battle)
Attacking first, Chun-Li jumped into the air, performing a Hazanshu, the incredibly fast footwork took Orchid by surprise, who jumped backward to avoid getting hit, her evasion successfully avoiding Chun-Li's attack. Similarly surprised by her opponent's evasive skill, Chun-Li was quick on her feet, and jumped into the air, this time somersaulting further and putting her behind Orchid.
With her foe in an ideal position, Chun-li used Kakukyakuraku, striking Orchid in the back by straightening her legs out. The unexpected strike knocked Orchid to the ground, which gave her the feeling that Chun-Li was not a typical opponent, she had some martial arts skill behind her. If she had come from Ultratech, she was certainly the most impressive thing they've sent her way.
It seemed as though Orchid was rising to her feet, but Chun-Li hurried to Orchid to prevent her from doing so. Suddenly Chun-Li felt a kick hit her chin from below, and she launched up towards the ceiling. Orchid had sneakily managed to get Whiplash into the fight quite early. Luckily for Chun-Li, she managed to recover in the air, and used her momentum to approach the ceiling to her advantage, she tucked her knees and as soon as she touched the ceiling, Chun-Li pushed herself down to the ground, right for Orchid.
Making good use of her environment, Orchid used the Tiger Slide, her leg seemingly conjuring particles of energy as she slid along the concrete, avoiding Chun-Li's turnabout. The two were back to the same distance from one another when the fight began, it became clear to both of them the other had the means of navigating the battlefield regardless of who was advantageous at the time. Chun-Li and Orchid looked at one another, acknowledging the skill the other possessed.
"You know a fight when you see it. I'm impressed." Orchid remarked as she tried to keep the mood a bit light. "I admit you are rather skilled, but flattery will get you nowhere" Chun-Li added, though admittedly she appreciated the comment, but didn't want to accept it openly, considering it came from a wanted woman. She resumed the fight again, sprinting toward Orchid. But Orchid simply used her Tiger Slide once again.
Moving across the concrete rather gracefully, the particles from the slide caught Chun-Li off guard, and landed a kick on Chun-Li's leg, having successfully gotten in close, Orchid quickly readied her eskrima sticks to strike Chun-Li. In an unexpected move, Chun-Li stopped the sticks by grabbing onto them with her bare hands. Using as much of her upper body strength as possible, Chun-Li attempted to break them before they could see any use in this battle.
Unfortunately, Orchid was prepared, and activated the eskrima sticks, directly exposing Chun-Li to the electrical shocks. Releasing her grip on them very quickly, Chun-Li rapidly waved her hands around trying to overcome the immediate pain she felt, leaving Orchid the perfect opportunity to launch her attack.
Using her eskrima sticks, Orchid performs two stick thrusts, turning her body for the second thrust, adding extra momentum. Afterwards, Orchid redirects the momentum into two strikes downward. And finally, she thrusts both handles, performing an upward swing. The combo easily knocked Chun-Li around, but it had not overwhelmed her in the slightest. Orchid once again went to strike with her eskrima sticks, but they were blocked by Chun-Li's leg.
Looking at Orchid directly, Chun-Li easily read her face. Smiling a bit, Chun-Li quickly capitalized on it in the heat of the moment. "Hyakuretsukyaku!" On her command, Chun-Li kicked Orchid's arm away and proceeded to kick Orchid with her iconic technique, the rate at which Chun-Li struck Orchid was so fast that it was impossible for the human eye to even keep up with it. On her final kick, she firmly pushed it on Orchid, launching her back several meters. Orchid momentarily shook her head in disbelief, contemplating if what she had seen was actually real.
It occurred to Orchid the level of skill on display here rivalled those in the Killer Instinct tournament. But she didn't dwell on the thought much longer, she concluded that Chun-Li had proven her effectiveness. Orchid figured it was time to make sure she wasn't being left in the dust. Waiting until her opponent was ready, Chun-Li carefully observed Orchid, looking to see what her next attack should be. As Orchid readied herself, she held her eskrima sticks by her sides.
The two ran towards one another as Orchid once again went for a three-hit combo on Chun-Li. But Chun-Li suddenly went low a lot earlier than Orchid's attack, though Orchid attempts to redirect her attacks, Chun-Li was already in position, and perfectly set up her Tenshokyaku. With a kick to Orchid's stomach, Chun-Li launched her opponent skyward, she then jumped into the air herself, rotating her body around as though she was a spinning top.
With each turn, Chun-Li struck Orchid with a kick. This process repeated itself several times until Chun-Li finally adhered to gravity, descending to the ground. Orchid touched down too, putting one hand on her stomach from all the times it got kicked. But she didn't stall and quickly got herself moving again. Orchid once again used Tiger Slide to her advantage, but Chun-Li simply jumped into the air to avoid it.
But to add insult to injury, Chun-Li immediately dropped onto Orchid's head with Yoshokyaku, striking Orchid with her left leg, causing Orchid to hit the ground in the middle of her Tiger Slide. Chun-Li also used Orchid as a platform to give her additional air time, thus landing on the ground a few moments later. Orchid seemed to assume a pushup position as effortlessly pushed herself back up.
Seeing that Orchid was fairly tough, Chun-Li nearly commended her for it. But then also remembered she was here to arrest her, so she put that thought out of her head. Chun-Li sprinted forward towards Orchid. At that moment, Orchid harnessed the electrical energy of her eskrima sticks "Lasaken!" she shouted as a small but distinct projectile of electricity launched toward Chun-Li. Seeing that it was coming right for her, Chun-Li jumped into the air to evade the attack.
Suddenly, Orchid ascended into the air as well, striking Chun-Li with her left knee, the attack knocked Chun-Li to the ground, it wasn't an attack she expected. Orchid landed on the ground and saw Chun-Li still looking to gather herself. She immediately sought to capitalize on this and used another Lasaken to shock Chun-Li with electricity. Launching the attack, Orchid's attack almost reached Chun-Li until she reached her right hand out.
"Kikoken!" Chun-Li shouted as a small light blue ball of energy manifested and launched directly towards the Lasaken, the two projectiles collide, cancelling each other out. The reveal of Chun-Li possessing some kind of energy-based attack reminded Orchid of her grandmother and the power she inherited from her. For a moment, Orchid felt a slight kinship towards Chun-Li, regarding her positively.
With no time to waste, Chun-Li emerged from the projectile collision and unleashed yet another flurry of kicks, this time to try and repel Orchid from attacking. The speed of the kicks was difficult to follow, it seemed like she was kicking one thousand times in just a couple of seconds. Orchid's first instinct was to attack with yet another Lasaken, but instead of trying that same tactic again, she decided to unleash a few more tricks of her own, her training wasn't simply to sit around fighting people.
As Chun-Li's legs kicked at an incredible rate, making it tough for Orchid to approach directly. Noticing that Orchid was trying to figure out her next move, Chun-Li seized the moment and leaned backward before pushing herself into the air, expecting Orchid to follow her with the knee attack she used earlier. And she was right, Orchid jumped toward her, looking to catch her in the air.
Having made Orchid act as she wanted, Chun-Li rendered Orchid focused on her ascend and not her eskrima sticks, and unleashed a Kikoken, striking Orchid directly on the chest. The blast knocked Orchid to the ground, making her realize she lowered her guard to attack. Noticing Chun-Li landing on the ground and getting ready to attack again, Orchid needed a moment to get herself together. With a wave of her eskrima sticks, Orchid launched a Lasaken towards Chun-Li.
Seeing the projectile as a minor inconvenience, Chun-Li countered with her Kikoken, the two projectiles cancelling out the other. As Chun-Li resumed her approach, Orchid was back on her feet and had also started to approach. Refusing to back down, Chun-Li committed to her attack, tossing a punch toward Orchid. However, Orchid weaved her head to the side, avoiding the arm completely. With her guard completely open, Chun-Li's heart rate spiked.
(Cue The London March - Fatal Fury 2)
With a golden opportunity to land some attacks, Orchid thrusts the stick in her left hand at Chun-Li, striking her in the arm. Relenting to the pain from the electricity, Chun-Li opened her guard even further, letting Orchid make another attack, using the stick on her right hand to strike Chun-Li in the chest, ever so briefly shocking her. Again reacting to the pain with her body aching, it left Chun-Li open for a third strike.
Holding her eskrima sticks over her head, they appeared to glow brighter as they seemed to charge up. Using what precious moments she had before Chun-Li composed herself, Orchid strikes both of her eskrima sticks at Chun-Li simultaneously. The energy that had been charged into the sticks again shocked Chun-Li, and she felt another jolt of pain, despite ending as soon as Orchid pulled her sticks away from Chun-Li's body.
Staggering backward for a short moment, Chun-Li finally got herself together. Orchid had come in for another attack, her eskrima sticks about to strike yet again. Out of desperation, Chun-Li performed a Kikoken, which struck Orchid on her arm, causing her to drop one of her eskrima sticks, the yellow baton rolled along the ground. Acting quickly, Chun-Li kicked the baton like a soccer ball, sending it rolling towards the computers Orchid was using earlier.
Although partially disarmed, Orchid did not have complete reliance on her weapons, and just moments after Chun-Li's kick, Orchid used Whiplash, performing a cartwheel, using the momentum of her feet to launch Chun-Li into the air yet again, though she was sent forward, flying past Orchid. The Disavowed founder quickly followed up with a Lasaken, which travelled across the room and struck Chun-Li, shocking her in addition to the impact of hitting the ground.
The shocks were minor, and the fall fairly inconsequential, Chun-Li was able to persevere through it all. As she rolled onto her chest, Chun-Li looked forward, she saw one of Orchid's eskrima sticks laying on the ground. Seeing a chance to try and even the playing field, Chun-Li reached forward to grab it, only for Orchid to snatch it away from her.
"Gotcha!" Orchid remarked, as she confidently dual-wielded her eskrima sticks once again. A little annoyed, Chun-Li knew she needed to make the most of the moment, and took advantage of Orchid's cheap chatter, and swept her legs across Orchid's feet, knocking her to the ground. Falling on her back, Orchid tried to get back up, but Chun-Li planted her foot on Orchid's wrist, rendering the use of that eskrima stick borderline impossible.
With her other arm being her only suitable choice, Orchid swung her left arm to strike Chun-Li's leg, but that arm was kicked by Chun-Li's other leg, hitting her right at the elbow joint. For a moment, Orchid seemed to be immobilized, unable to use her weapons effectively.
"Now that you've settled down, let's negotiate your surrender" Chun-Li quite literally looks down at Orchid, seeing her as a captured target now. Though Orchid didn't show any sign of complacency, her face still showed she was willing to fight. This only further annoyed Chun-Li, since she felt pretty adamant the advantage belonged to her. "I will never abandon a mission so long as I live." Orchid retaliated, giving her opponent a look of unbridled determination. Chun-Li seemed almost confused, how could Orchid be so determined whilst being the one just moments away from handcuffs? And the truth revealed it, literally hitting Chun-Li on the head. Orchid had released her eskrima stick and lined up a kick to launch it at the back of Chun-Li's head.
Immediately, Chun-Li turned around, thinking some ally or third party had come to intervene. Such precious time wasn't wasted, Orchid used it to grab hold of Chun-Li's leg. For a moment, Orchid noticed how well developed Chun-Li's thighs were, and it showed that she had some incredible leg strength. But Orchid put those thoughts aside as she pulled on Chun-Li's leg, tossing her to the ground. Astounded by Orchid's strength, Chun-Li hit the ground as though a professional wrestler had slammed her onto the ring.
Getting to her feet first, Orchid hurried toward Chun-Li before she could get up, and used this chance to perform another of her techniques. As Chun-Li stood up, she watched Orchid perform another cartwheel. But this wasn't a simple cartwheel as Orchid spread her legs out and it turned into a spinning handstand of sorts. Orchid's legs spun around like a fan, each spinning kick hitting Chun-Li in the head and occasionally on her chest.
The use of Flick Flack was enough to put Orchid back into the advantageous position, and once she returned to a standing upright position, she once again drew out her eskrima sticks, ready to make good use of them once again. Recovering from the repeated attacks, Chun-Li thought about what had just been attacked with. The nature of which felt reminiscent to her. Orchid didn't waste much time and quickly launched Lasaken, knowing she could follow it up with something else if it was countered.
(Cue Heat Haze Shadow - Tekken 7)
Instead of using a Kikoken, Chun-Li sprinted toward the projectile and eloquently ducked under it, turning her body on its side. Orchid prepared to strike with her eskrima sticks when Chun-Li quickly lifted herself off the ground and spun her entire body. "Spinning Bird Kick!". In an act that seemingly defied gravity itself, Chun-Li spun her entire body around multiple times with her legs outstretched in both directions, unlike Orchid, however, Chun-Li was not using the ground to anchor herself.
Bizarrely, Chun-Li's attack went through without so much as a single bit of leverage helping her realistically pull off the technique, her spinning legs striking Orchid's stomach at a similar speed and power as her Flick Flack. The two moves seemed comparable, except one of them was outright ludicrous. Orchid couldn't quite understand what she was seeing. But before long, she was knocked enough times that she fell onto the ground in time for Chun-Li's attack to conclude and she somehow managed to land with both her legs on the ground.
This battle had shown Orchid she hadn't seen it all just yet. Chun-Li stood over Orchid yet again, though this time, she didn't say anything that would prevent her from focusing on the situation. Just as Chun-Li was going to apprehend her foe, Orchid got up and tried to put some distance between herself and Chun-Li, but the officer was quick to pursue her. And that's when Orchid realized she needed to do something that could buy her some more time.
Knowing she didn't have many options left, Orchid took her two eskrima sticks and attached the two. Chun-Li almost caught up to her as Orchid held her bigger eskrima stick and thrust it into the ground. Chun-Li made it just in time for her to receive a massive pillar of electrical energy, looking more akin to plasma. The beam briefly ensnared Chun-Li before she got launched and impacted the ground.
The pillar caused some of the damaged ceiling to collapse, causing some debris to land between Chun-Li and Orchid. The two were momentarily unable to resume the fight. This was a saving grace for Chun-Li, who was able to recover, but definitely noticed she was beginning to hurt a bit. She was tough, but there were a lot of things in this battle she hadn't expected. Chun-Li unleashed a Kikoken, tossing it toward the rubble in front of her. As her projectile cleared the way, suddenly a cat-like creature appeared, almost startling Chun-Li.
Seeing that the creature was headed right for her, Chun-Li concentrated instead of giving into fear. And she closed her eyes for a short moment before opening them, her hands becoming enveloped by blue energy. "Kikosho!" Orchid emerged from the rubble only to witness the massive Kikosho envelop the immediate area in front of Chun-Li. The Firecat failed to attack Chun-Li, overwhelmed by the immense power of the Kikosho. Orchid attempted to attack from a distance, but the Kikosho had damaged the environment, just as Orchid had done beforehand.
More rubble began to fall around them, and soon chunks of concrete were dropping. Chun-Li and Orchid realized their situation, and Orchid immediately sprinted towards one corner of the room which had a hole cut into the wall. Orchid leapt through it, disappearing into the darkness. Knowing it would be risky anyway, Chun-Li also plunged herself into the hole, where she seemed to travel down a pipe of sorts, for a brief moment, it felt like she was in a theme park of sorts. But the pipe soon came to an end.
Thereafter, Chun-Li emerged from the pipe into what seemed like a world of darkness. It was really difficult to see. Just then, a yellow light got her attention as she turned to see that same cat-like creature headed straight for her. Jumping into the air to avoid it, the cat-like creature continued forward, where it suddenly caused light to break through the darkness. It seemed the two were in a room of sorts.
Landing on the ground, Chun-Li watched suddenly as massive light sources switched on, revealing she was in some kind of abandoned underground base, Orchid standing at the light switch. "There you are, I found you!" Chun-Li declared as she resumed the battle.
Orchid walked forward and suddenly seemed to transform as she jumped into the air. Her appearance transformed into that cat-like creature once again. Chun-Li found that sight astounding, but knew she needed to act, and fast. Using a second Kikosho, Chun-Li held back the Firecat, which reverted to Orchid. She landed on the ground as Chun-Li's Kikosho left behind a crater. Orchid realized just how powerful Chun-Li was.
And with that information, she knew it was necessary to bring the fight to a close as quickly as possible. She sprinted toward Chun-Li, running faster than she had before. Chun-Li saw her approach and tapped into Renkiko, her hands glowed with blue energy. Orchid thrust her eskrima sticks toward Chun-Li, and withstood the shocking impact, knowing it was a necessary cost. Chun-Li reached toward the eskrima sticks with her two hands, and used her physical might, now empowered by Renkiko, to shatter and break the eskrima sticks to pieces.
Astonished, Orchid stepped back a few feet, now disarmed and without her most reliable weapons. At that moment, Chun-Li initiated her Super Combo. She commenced with a Hyakuretsukyaku, striking Orchid multiple times. To follow up, she launched Orchid into the air with a powerful kick. Chun-Li continued her combo with a Spinning Bird Kick, launching herself into the air. Suddenly, Orchid gathers herself and strikes Chun-Li before she can complete her combo.
COMBO BREAKER!
"What?!" Chun-Li thought incredulously as she hit the ground completely caught off guard by Orchid's sudden turnabout. Orchid descended upon Chun-Li and once again turned into the Firecat, pouncing at Chun-Li, the fiery energy passed onto Chun-Li, and her clothes began to burn. Desperate to avoid the Firecat, Chun-Li used a Kikoken, but before it could reach the Firecat, Orchid emerged from her transformation and dodged the Kikoken.
Sprinting toward Chun-Li, Orchid knew calling on Firecat again would be predictable, and made an earnest attempt to combat her without using it. Orchid tossed a punch toward Chun-Li, but she intercepted the attack and tied her arm behind her back. "This fight is over" Chun-Li demanded a quiet submission. Orchid nearly seemed to fall into police custody, that is until she dropped something. Chun-Li looked to see what it was, only for a stun grenade to blind her.
This dance could keep going on, and that thought was no relief for Orchid, who seized the moment, transforming into Firecat once more and lunging at Chun-Li and biting directly into the throat, puncturing two holes, now spilling blood.
Immediately, Chun-Li's breathing became heavy and she desperately struggled. As though life had been drained from her, Chun-Li dropped to the ground, her body affected by the flames from Firecat, and her breathing failing from the bite. Not wanting to see that sight, Orchid raised her arm over her eyes as Chun-Li's struggle came to an end, and her pain soon thereafter.
K.O.!
Conclusion[]
(Cue Touch Me and I'll Break Your Face - Mick Gordon)
Boomstick: Aw man...
Wiz: While Chun-Li and Orchid were both incredible fighters, putting their accomplishments side by side reveals several advantages for Orchid. Firstly, Orchid has had arguably more combat experience. While Chun-Li joined Interpol when she was 18 years old, it's unclear how long she was there. At the very least, we know Orchid has spent an entire decade serving the US Military and building up a pretty impressive resume before she founded the Disavowed and went to war with Ultratech.
Boomstick: Plus Chun-Li never did defeat Bison by herself. This is where Orchid has a pretty big advantage, since she beat Eyedol, Gargos, ARIA and so on. Orchid simply has a better track record against beings of comparable or greater power. And it doesn't help that Urien let Chun-Li win the fight. Orchid also won the Killer Instinct tournament while Chun-Li has yet to win a single tournament.
Popup: Although Chun-Li had a unique fighting style to combat Orchid, she has not conclusively finished her training to prove that her wider array of techniques would give her a decisive advantage.
Wiz: But let's get into numbers. When it comes to speed, Chun-Li would have no problem reacting to Guile's Supersonic attacks, but Orchid has shown she can beat ARIA, who can react down to the nanosecond, which is far beyond Chun-Li's speeds. While Chun-Li's Kikosho against Bison is pretty tough, Orchid is tougher still thanks to her fights with Eyedol and Gargos, who easily outclass the majority of Killer Instinct's roster.
Boomstick: And since that includes crazy robots, ice cream aliens, spooky ghost girls and cheap and hell bosses, safe to say Orchid is among tougher competion than Bison. Both of 'em had projectiles to deal with opponents, but Orchid had another advantage in the form of Firecat, able to summon it whenever she wants, or transform into it for an attack.
Wiz: Compared to the Kikoken and Kikosho, Orchid's Firecat summoning and transformation is more accessible and powerful, as Orchid only needs to will herself to summon or transform into the fiery feline. Plus, having those long-range options hurt Chun-Li's ability to fight, forcing her into defensive positions during the fight. And Orchid simply had a lot more hands-on experience with combat scenarios, allowing her to think of more distinct methods of combating Chun-Li.
Popup: Orchid is comparable others in the roster like Glacius. One of Glacius' most impressive feats is freezing an entire lake. However, given Glacius' cryokinetic abilities, its unclear if Orchid would be considered comparable to a feat pertaining to one of Glacius' inherent abilities.
Boomstick: Yeah... Chun-Li is one magnificent woman, but she just doesn't have a lot of options in this fight. I mean, Chun-Li does have some pretty epic moves that would surprise just about anyone, but Orchid has the right stuff in her corner to win this battle.
Wiz: While Chun-Li's martial arts versatility, skill and surprise techniques were handy, she just couldn't match Orchid's greater strength, speed, power, longer-range, ingenuity and transformative abilites.
Boomstick: Chun-Li just didn't have the right Instinct for this fight.
Wiz: The winner is Black Orchid.

Trivia[]
- The connections between Chun-Li and Black Orchid are that they are fighting game heroines who debuted as the first female character of their franchise. They were created in the 1990s and are considered among the most famous and well-received female characters in video games. Both have occupations of authority (Chun-Li as an Interpol Officer, Orchid as a secret agent) and seek to bring down an organization (Shadaloo and Ultratech) whose members were responsible for the murder of their fathers.
