Much of Chell's past is a mystery, but it is heavily implied she is the daughter of a scientist at Aperture Laboratories. She became one of thousands of human testing subjects, and the only one to escape after a long sleep, and lots of rigorous testing. As a result, she wakes up as amongst the many specimens to test an experimental weapon known as the Portal Gun.
