"Tsundere" originates from a combination of the words "Deredere", meaning lovestruck, and "Tsuntsun", meaning aloof or irritable. Originally used to describe a character, usually of a female gender, who started out with a harsh and outgoing personality, but would slowly reveal a slow, vulnerable interior over the course of the series. However, over time, the Tsundere became flanderized, and thus is now generally associated with a character who flips between these two states at the slightest provocation, and usually at just a specific person, rather than a general sociability problem.
They are not to be confused with Kuuderes, who are generally cold, more quiet, reserved, as well as calm and composed. Tsunderes can be both heroes and villains, or even in between (Anti-Hero/Villain). Very often, they are in love with someone, but are far too stubborn to admit it, for one reason or the other. To hide their feelings, they typically either yell at, or hit the one that they love, or both. Examples of Tsunderes include Rin Tohsaka, Taiga Aisaka, Asuka Langley Soryu, and Toph Beifong.
