Characters that are not owned by any single company, and are not protected by copyright laws. This can be due to the characters never being copyrighted in the first place (such as many characters from mythology), or from the copyright expiring (such as the cases of Oswald the Rabbit, Sherlock Holmes, Cthulhu, etc.).
