History[]
Bernardo’s parents emigrated from Puerto Rico to the United States, probably not long before 1957, and got an apartment in New York City. Bernardo possibly went with his parents, or more likely joined them there later. Even later, Bernardo’s sister, Maria, also joined the family there. Living in the Big Apple, Bernardo found that the city was not particularly welcoming to the new immigrants. The Puerto Ricans were insulted and discriminated against, leaving Bernardo increasingly bitter about his new home.
Out of self-protection, Bernardo organized a group of Puerto Rican young men into a street gang, called the Sharks. The Sharks immediately came into conflict with a gang formed by native-born young men, called the Jets. The police did not particularly like either gang, and wished to keep them under control, but if they favored either gang, it was the Jets.
Bernardo became very upset, when Maria attracted the attention of a young native-born young man, named Tony. Tony was particularly abhorrent to Bernardo, because he was a founding member of the Jets. Finally reaching the end of his rope, Bernardo challenged the Jets to a gang-fight, known as a rumble.
