History[]

Born to parents Lyle and Beatrice Morgan, Arthur was orphaned at age 13 when both his parents died, and as a result, he was found and raised by outlaws Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews, who eventually educated him. Having since then learned all his skills from his adopted fathers, Arthur became one of the founding members of the feared outlaw gangs in the last years of the Wild West, the van der Linde Gang (or Dutch's Boys). At one point, he was raised alongside John Marston, and both became feared outlaws under the thumb of the idealistic yet progressively deranged Dutch van der Linde.

By the end of the Wild West, Arthur and the van der Linde gang struggled to survive, hoping to earn enough cash to effectively retire from the crime life and start anew in Tahiti, but slowly, the gang suffers from internal collapse due to the machinations of the manipulative and racist Micah Bell, whom most of the gang hates. After a ferry robbery goes wrong in Blackwater, the van der Linde Gang moved into hiding for a few days where the law could not reach them, but the gang themselves encounter troubles with the O'Driscoll Gang, their bitter enemies. After discovering their plans to rob a train owned by business magnate Leviticus Cornwall, the gang successfully robbed the train themselves, earning enough cash to move to Valentine, but are discovered by bounty hunters sent by Cornwall as retaliation for the train robbery. At one point, Arthur performed an extortion job under loan shark Leopold Strauss which in turn inflicted him on tuberculosis. The gang are forced to move further east, where they stumble upon both Grays and Braithwaites, both redneck gangs of whom they do jobs for in exchange for money, even so far as to steal Braithwaite liquor and horses and destroying Gray property in the process.

The Van der Linde gang annihilates both redneck originals and discover that Jack Marston had been kidnapped, Arthur moves to Saint Denis with the gang to rescue Jack from Italian crime lord Angelo Bronte. They succeed, but Bronte turns on them by sending the law on them. Out of ego and rage, Dutch kills Bronte, disturbing Arthur and John.

After a heist on Saint Denis goes wrong with Hosea and Lenny killed and John arrested, the gang escape to a ship heading to Cuba, but a storm destroys the ship they were stowing on and separates the gang, shipwrecking them to Guarma. Arthur reunites with the gang with the help of Guarma rebel Hercule, the gang helps the rebels liberate their island from the tyrannical Fussar, eventually destroying Fussar's forces and his prized ironclad ship. In return, the rebels return the gang to the United States, where remnants of the van der Linde gang reunite.

Over time, Arthur comes to doubt Dutch, as the latter is slowly losing his sanity, as a result, he is replaced by Micah, whose manipulations continue to worsen Dutch and the gang. Unfortunately, as a result of his extortion under Strauss' business, Arthur suffers from tuberculosis; he dismisses Strauss from the gang for ruining people's lives with his business practices which lead him to the illness that now threatens his life. After sharing concerns with John over Dutch after the latter kills Cornwall, he defies his mentor by helping the Native Americans regain their lands from the growing American industrialization, resulting in Dutch leaving Arthur behind, leaving John to die during the gang's final robbery and refusing to rescue Abigail Marston from Pinkerton custody. With Sadie Adler's help, Arthur rescues Abigail, but not before the latter kills Agent Milton, the Pinkerton agent hounding the gang throughout the game.

By the end, the Van der Linde gang begins to deteriorate rapidly, as Dutch believes that a rat is amongst his gang. Arthur discovers that Micah is the rat, but as the gang suddenly dissolves over a confrontation over the betrayal, they are attacked by the Pinkertons. Knowing that his life has come to an end, Arthur sacrifices himself to ensure safety for John and his family (or leaving them behind to reclaim the money from their last score), eventually crossing with Micah one last time before he succumbs to tuberculosis. John later brings justice to Arthur's name by killing Micah and destroying his gang, hopefully starting anew with Abigail and Jack.
