Description[]
Metal Gear vs. Overwatch. Season 9 finale. They seek to improve the survival of others through combat, but few survive against the strength of their fists.
Introduction[]
Wiz: Here on Death Battle, survival of the fittest has always been an integral part of how the outcome is found.
Boomstick: So it's only appropriate that one of our season finales would feature two people who believe in this more than anything else.
Wiz: Armstrong, the powerful Senator from Metal Gear.
Boomstick: And Doomfist, Talon's terrifying cyborg striker. He's Wiz and I'm Boomstick.
Wiz: And it's our job to analyze their weapons, armour and skills to find out who would win a Death Battle.
Armstrong[]
Wiz: Following the downfall of the Patriots, the mysterious cable that ran the world, the PMCs they controlled all fractured, forming into entirely new ones with ambitions of dominating the war market.
Boomstick: One of them was World Martial, which was up to no good by aligning themselves with the terrorist organization Desperado, who also had themselves a benefactor in the form of a senator from Texas.
Wiz: A senator who, like most others, had a strong passion for what he believed in. Or didn't. I don't know, it's whatever people think most politicians are like. But if there was one thing was Steven Armstrong was, it was driven. Originally having studied at the University of Texas, and not some cushy Ivy League School, he first joined the navy to serve his country but when that proved too peaceful for a difference to be made, he went into a far more hostile battleground.
- Background
- Age: Likely 40s
- Height: 6'7
- Colorado senator in the US Senate
- Funder and de-facto leader of World Marshall
- Doesn't write his speeches
Boomstick: Politics! Running as a representative for Colorado, he was elected to one of the state's seats in the US Senate. But he didn't just want political power. He wanted an America that reflected his own dream of a country where every citizen would be able to fight for what they believed, not because of what others told them to.
Wiz: From the sounds of it, seems like he basically wanted a country-wide series of free-for-all battles. Which would probably fit with what most people perceive as America's constant situation.
Boomstick: Ah...the guilty pleasure of ribbing on America. I knew we were going to be doing that a lot with a combatant like Armstrong. Especially with his war-enabling mindset.
Wiz: Hence his secret backing of World Martial and by extension Desperado, all part of a strategy to revitalize the war economy. And being part of an organization that believes that only the strongest can succeed, Armstrong has himself a little trick up his sleeve. Or rather, under his skin.
Boomstick He's got nanomachines son!
Wiz: We're the same age.
- Nanomachines (son)
- Hardens in response to trauma
- Impervious to most forms of attack
- Super strength and speed
- Healing factor
- Energy absorption
- Shockwave generation
- Explosion generation
- Electromagnetism-based telekinesis
Boomstick: Irrelevant because of memes. You know, the things Steven's colleague Monsoon yaks on about. Anyway, whilst nanomachines have been present in the Metal Gear world before, the ones Armstrong have are of a whole other caliber.
Wiz: The nanomachines within Armstrong react to outside trauma, hardening so that the initiator of the attack ends up deflecting off of skin that's been hardened to the toughness of the hardest steel.
Boomstick: But Armstrong can use them for so much more than just making himself hard to hurt. For one thing, he can use them to hurt others because apparently, hitting others is technically a means of harming himself because that's how his fists get hard enough to become metallic missiles.
Wiz: The nanomachines also enable Armstrong to draw in large amounts of energy in order to keep them sustained, on top of giving himself a massive boost in power. It reaches a point where he is able to create massive explosions, crack and fragment the ground and unleash bellows that seem comparable to shockwaves.
Boomstick: He can even use some sort of electrical-magnetism to lift objects and hurl them like ballistic projectiles and that's when he's not throwing them himself.
Wiz: In the, frankly unlikely, event that he is seriously hurt, Armstrong has the ability to heal his injuries. He can even reattach limbs.
Boomstick: So those nanomachines, son, are pretty wild but they wouldn't be nearly as effective if Armstrong wasn't as good as he was at using them.
Wiz: Having played college ball, Armstrong is adept in tackling and grappling with his opponents and is capable enough to deliver powerful haymakers and vicious kicks.
Boomstick: And straight up wrestler style moves. Hang on a moment, I just realized we haven't made an America or Politics joke the entire time we talked about the nanomachines. I have tons of them...
Wiz: Nooope. Uh-uh!
Boomstick: What? Why?
Wiz: We will not conform to the basics of comedy. That's how Collective Consciousness takes control.
Boomstick: But I've got one with nanomachines being the same as Trump's tan...Oh, I see what you did there! Okay fine, that can be used instead of another politic joke.
- Feats
- Snapped Raiden's high frequency blade
- Destroyed Metal Gear EXCELSUS
- Threw pieces of Metal Gear EXCELSUS's body
- Required the Murasama to be truly hurt
- Posthumously ignited the War on Terror
- Defeated Jetstream Sam, Raiden, Bade Wolf
Wiz: Trust me, it's for the best. After all, Armstrong is pretty far from a joke. He's incredibly dangerous as an adversary, with not even super-enhanced cyborgs standing a chance against him. In fact, he's single-handedly responsible for the feat that gives possibly the highest output of energy in the Metal Gear franchise; destroying Metal Gear EXCELSUS with a single punch.
Boomstick: Like any American after using their car once.
Wiz: Boomstick!
Boomstick: Ha, I can't turn it off!
Wiz: Urgh...well anyways, Armstrong's punch blew EXCELSUS' body apart in a fiery explosion worth 120 kilotons of TNT (AugilaR101).
Boomstick: Damn, it's no wonder why Doktor believed a single well placed blow could have put Raiden down.
Wiz: He nearly did as well, even doing something that Doktor believed to be impossible as per the laws of physics; snapping Raiden's High Frequency Blade. As in, he caught a bladed weapon designed to destabilize molecules so that they can be more easily severed and broke it.
Boomstick: And why? Because his nanomachines are just that tough. In order for them to be effectively damaged, Raiden had to make use of an even stronger HF Blade. One that formerly belonged to his rival Jetstream Sam, the Murasama. Speaking of, that same Sammy ended up getting bested by Armstrong himself in the most intense job interview you could imagine.
Popup: Given what Sam went through, it's possible that Armstrong bested the other Winds of Destruction in similar battles when they came to join Desperado/World Marshall, although there's nothing truly concrete to support this.
Wiz: According to one of Revengeance's creators, if Sam had been able to hang on a bit longer, he could have outlasted Armstrong's nanomachines, as they have a finite charge to them. Also, if someone is able to outpace the rate at which the nanomachines harden or are able to target his heart, then they will be capable of besting the Senator.
Boomstick: But whilst he ultimately didn't live long enough to see himself be swept into the White House as the commander-in-chief, he was able to impart his way of fighting for oneself onto his killer, Raiden. Guess you really don't want to fuck with this Senator.
Doomfist[]
Wiz: Every superhero team has themselves an opposing force, a union of super villains they lock horns with. For the Justice League, it's the Legion of Doom. For the Avengers, it's the Masters of Evil. And for Overwatch, it's Talon.
Boomstick: Like that Apollyon chick from For Honor, Talon believes that the biggest builder of character is conflict. In order words, it's their goal to strengthen humanity by sowing chaos and strife throughout the worlds, in hopes that humankind will evolve to a greater level of strength.
Wiz: Considering that the last time humans got complacent with a more powerful race, that being the robotic Omnics, a massive war broke out and revolutionary science had to be developed or utilized to beat them, they might have had a point. Still, their actions put in jeopardy the lives of innocent people and could destabilize world peace, so that made them an enemy of Overwatch.
Boomstick: The two factions have clashed numerous times, especially against the man considered to be their de-facto leader. The latest in a long line of enhanced humans going by the name Doomfist. Pretty on the nose there, but hey, it's accurate.
- Background
- Real Name: Akande Ogundimu
- Age: 45
- Height: 7'1
- Member and de-facto leader of Talon
- The 3rd Doomfist
Wiz: It's also actually pretty ironic, since the very first Doomfist was actually a hero. In fact, the only probable reason his title was Doomfist is because that's literally what his name translates to.
Boomstick: Huh. Neat. And whilst this bloke was a hero, his successor was a villain, and then his successor was also a villain, and he's the one we're focusing on.
Wiz: Before he was the third Doomfist, he was Akande Ogundimu, part of a family that specialized in creating artificial limbs.
Boomstick: Which came in handy when he got really hurt and had to get replacement body parts. Unfortunately, this meant that he couldn't further his career into becoming a professional martial artist, since having cyborg prosthetics was regarded as an unfair advantage. Yeah, talk to the guy who got hurt as a casualty during a worldwide war against what's fair.
Wiz: With a void left in his life, Akande was offered the chance to be a mercenary by the second Doomfist, the Scourge, working for Talon. Once again alit with a drive for battle, Akande would eventually betray his mentor, strike him down and take the power and mantle of Doomfist for himself, quickly proving himself quite possibly Talon's most formidable agent.
Boomstick: He was already pretty good at African martial arts which are reminiscent of classic boxing but with the Doomfist gauntlet he become an absolute terror.
- Arsenal
- Doomfist Gauntlet
- The Best Defense
- Seismic Slam
- Rising Uppercut
- Rocket Punch
- Meteor Strike
- Hand Cannon
- Doomfist Gauntlet
Wiz: Well, with both that, and the literal Hand Cannon he has on his other arm, which fires out a shotgun-like blast with ammunition that can replenish over time. But the Doomfist gauntlet is what I know we all want to discuss.
Boomstick: Just look at it! It's majestic and thus packs one hell of a punch. Or several actually. He can lung forwards and release a shockwave upon punching the ground, hit his foes with an uppercut and most basically, charge up a Rocket Punch to varying degrees of power, the highest letting him send those hit flying backwards.
Wiz: Since his offensive options are primarily based on up-close damage, it's a good thing that he can chain all of these abilities together.
Boomstick: It could go any number of ways; Rocket Punch to launch them away, Seismic Slam to get after them and then an Uppercut for some extra damage. Or Uppercut, Rocket Punch, Seismic Slam. Or Seismic Slam, Uppercut, Rocket Punch. So long as he's fast enough to chain them together, it's one hell of something to get caught up in.
Wiz: Each of Doomfist's strikes also reward him with additional armour points, proving that the best defense is a good offense. I mean, it's the name of the ability so of course it is.
Boomstick: He even gets that same kind of boost whenever he successfully hits anyone with his ultimate ability; Meteor Strike.
Wiz: He literally leaps 360 feet in the air before coming down with a powerful punch capable of fragmenting the ground. Anyone caught in it isn't walking away from that unscathed.
Boomstick: Hey Wiz, why can't your robot be that awesome?
Wiz: It is! In it's own way.
Boomstick: Well, I know for a fact it can't do the Meteor Strike.
Wiz: It could! If I modified it the right way. Might probably rip me in half though...
- Feats
- Defeated a squad of OR-15s
- Dodged a blast from Winston's Tesla Cannon
- Said to be capable of toppling skyscrapers
- Violently fragments the ground with Meteor Strike
- Punched a way out of his cell w/o his Gauntlet
- Defeated Akinjide Adeyem, Genji, Tracer
Boomstick: Oh, you'd definitely be reduced to nothing more than a smear on the ground if you tried replicating Doomfist's abilities. After all, a different model of a Doomfist gauntlet was said to pack enough power to topple a skyscraper with a single hit, which would need a force worth 2 tons of TNT to pull of.
Wiz: If we want to take it one step further and say that Doomfist could be capable of destroying a large building like a skyscraper in its entirety, then he could be capable of delivering 11 tons of TNT.
Boomstick: He's also pretty fast on his feet, having dodge a blast from Winston's Tesla Cannon.
Wiz: In theoretical physics, a Tesla Cannon is envisioned as a means of firing projectiles at light speed. Whilst Winston's own cannon likely operates differently, Doomfist had personally shown himself capable of besting Overwatch agents Genji and Tracer, who are fast enough to either dodge or reflect bullet fire.
Boomstick: The guy leaves behind so much destruction behind him, he makes it look like an art form. Like the time he fought against an entire team of OR-15s.
Wiz: Which is actually pretty impressive when you consider the abilities a rebuilt OR-15 has. With their ability to draw a target in a different direction, fortify themselves temporarily, their high HP and long range, they're actually pretty useful for dealing with Doomfist. So defeating an entire group of them is an impressive feat and proves Doomfist can overcome odds stacked against him.
Boomstick: Well, what else can you expect from someone who punched a hole through a concrete wall? Even with the cool down on several of his abilities in gameplay and overspecialization of close-quarters fighting, Doomfist has proved himself to be a deadly foe for the heroes of Overwatch.
Interlude[]
Wiz: Alright the combatants are set, time to end this debate once and for all.
Boomstick: It's time for a Death Battle!
The Battle[]
Setting: Top of the World Marshall building
Armstrong stood with his back to Doomfist, smoking a cigar as Doomfist marched up behind him.
Armstrong: So, I take it you're here for the job offer?
Doomfist: Job offer? No, I am here to take your company's assets for my own.
Armstrong: Hmm...you're ruthless. Sure you don't want a job with us?
Doomfist: I'll have to decline. Prepare yourself!
The Talon agent raised his mechanical arm and clenched it into a fist as Armstrong flicked away his cigar and turned around, his body glowing orange slightly.
Armstrong: Now that is what I like to hear!
Doomfist pulled his fist back, charged up Rocket Punch and launched forwards with a war yell.
FIGHT!
The instant Doomfist's Rocket Punch had enabled him to close the distance, Armstrong swung out with a punch of his own which collided with Doomfist's, producing a massive shockwave that spread far out from the top of the skyscraper. The two stood there, their fists pressing against one another's as they attempted to overpower the other, looking at each other with battle-ready smirks. Eventually, their fists grinded off each other and Armstrong took the initiative to continue on offensively, striking out with numerous punches which Doomfist darted his large metal arm around to block. At one point, Armstrong brought his leg up and kicked Doomfist in his defensively-used arm, which sent him skidding back slightly. When Doomfist looked back up, Doomfist scored several hits across his face before he was able to duck beneath his haymaker and he came back up to drive his robotic elbow into Armstrong's cheek. As the Senator was briefly stunned, Doomfist crouched down and activated his Uppercut Punch, catching Armstrong on the chin and launching him up into the air. His eyes snapped open up there however and he reached out to grab a hold of Doomfist's hand, yanking him up into the air after him where he swung out an arm and caught Doomfist on the neck with his forearm.
Doomfist dropped to the ground whilst Armstrong landed on his feet with his back to the downed cyborg. He instantly turned around and raised his interlocked fists above his head to bring it down onto the helpless Doomfist, only for him to open his eyes and pull his legs up so that the could shoot them out over himself and nail Armstrong in the face with them. The Senator stumbled backwards as Doomfist was able to get back to his feet after the heels-over-head attack, turn around and come after Armstrong with a trio of punches that sent him back even further. Even when the Senator recovered and made a grab for his opponent, Doomfist jumped backwards out of reach. Once putting some distance between them both, he started using his Hand Cannon to fire shots at Armstrong, forcing him to cross his arms over his face his defend against them. He charged his arm with explosive energy before yelling and charging forwards, powering through Doomfist's shots until he had closed the distance and drove his energy-fueled fist into his face, sending him sliding across the ground. Armstrong jumped into the air, coming down towards Doomfist with an elbow, but the cyborg once again made use of his Uppercut to launch himself upwards to drive his fist into Armstrong's side. He tumbled back down to Earth, rolling back to his feet and breathing with a painful smirk.
Armstrong: Okay...I felt that one.
Doomfist: You shall feel more than that every soon my friend.
He slammed his fist into the ground as part of his Seismic Slam and Armstrong responded by doing the same, sending out a line of explosions to meet Doomfist's shockwave. The opposing forces tore the roof apart, leaving it a scorched surface and sending rubble flying up into the air before it started raining down. Doomfist noticed this and jumped backwards to plant his feet on one of the falling rubble pieces, before punching another one straight towards Armstrong. As Armstrong smashed it apart with a punch, Doomfist launched himself from the rubble piece and struck Armstrong across the face as he went past. As Doomfist landed behind Armstrong and the latter thus turned around and caught Armstrong beneath the chin with a punch. Armstrong kept his glare on Doomfist and reached out to grab two pieces of still falling rubble to clap them around Doomfist. The Talon agent shook off the fragments from himself before unleashing a flurry of punches using both his hands over Armstrong's chest and face with the finesse of a boxer. Armstrong snarled and threw out several powerful haymakers, only for Doomfist to strafe around them all before driving his robotic fist into Armstrong's stomach, and as the Senator got the wind knocked from his lungs, Doomfist drove his other hand into his face and at the same fired the hand cannon, producing a short range blast that sent Armstrong stumbling backwards. He blinked away the flash from the blast in time to see Doomfist charging towards him with a Rocket Punch and acted quickly, slamming his fist into the ground to send a volcanic line across the ground towards Doomfist, the resulting explosion from it launching Doomfist into the air. Armstrong darted forwards, grabbed Doomfist by his leg and yanked him down so he could grab his shoulder and slam his hardened head into his. Blood erupted from his nose as Doomfist was launched onto his back and as he scrambled to get back up, he saw Armstrong glowing green as he healed his injuries.
Doomfist glowered before jumping high into the air, drawing Armstrong's attention as he looked up and watched as the cyborg shot downwards from the sky as part of his Meteor Impact Ultimate. Doomfist collided with his opponent head on, cancelling out his healing and smashing him through the ruined roof, through several other floors and into a level midway in the skyscraper. There, their fight continued, although it more consisted of Doomfist overwhelming Armstrong with varying combos of his Uppercut, Rocket Punch and Seismic Slam. Thanks to the series of connection blows, Doomfist's armour continued to grow, serving him well for when Armstrong was able to swing an energy-charged punch into his face. As Doomfist went backwards, Armstrong conjured up a strand of electromagnetic electricity between himself and a tank parked outside the World Marshall HQ, using the connection to yank it all the way up from ground level to the middle of the building. It smashed through the floor in front of Doomfist and slammed straight into him, carrying him out of building and into thin air. Undeterred, Doomfist pulled himself over the tank and launched himself off it towards the HQ, his fist pulled back to slam it against the side of the building.
For a moment, it stayed standing after the shockwave ripped through it, before it began to tip over. Armstrong roared in surprise and anger as his entire building fell over, smashing down into the street and leaving it nothing but rubble. Doomfist landed amongst it, keeping his guard up as he surveyed his handiwork until he saw some of the rubble shift. He stepped to the side to avoid a piece of it as it, and the rest of the pule, where blown away by Armstrong with a burst of energy, revealing his white shirt had been reduced to fragments. He seethed a moment upon fixing Doomfist with another murderous look, before he viciously beamed.
Armstrong: Ah, what a fight! C'mon, don't stop now!
Doomfist met his challenge by charging forwards with a full powered Rocket Punch right into Armstrong's chest. The senator winced before grinning against and swinging a punch into Doomfist's face. From there they both pummeled away at each other, Doomfist's own strikes keeping his shields filled. As this happened, Doomfist watched as the nanomachines worked to harden to intercept his strikes. He narrowed his eyes and ducked beneath Armstrong's forward punch and time seemed to slow down as he aimed at the mass of veins over Armstrong's heart with a powerful punch, which was powerful enough to produce a shockwave outwards. Armstrong cast a look down at the fist, which looked like it had indeed directly damaged the heart.
Only it hadn't, given that Doomfist's robotic arm fractured and cracked due to slamming against Armstrong's quickly hardened flesh. Doomfist yelled in shock as Armstrong smirked, grabbed the nearly limb arm and tore it off, spinning around to smash it into Doomfist's face. The entire limb was reduced to scrap and Doomfist fell backwards, blinded by the fragments. Through his blurred vision, he saw Armstrong's hand shoot towards his face. The senator's fingers closed around his face, crushing it into a mangled wreck and killing Doomfist instantly, although Armstrong still tore him in half straight down the middle for good measure, splattering the viewpoint with blood and oil.
KO!
Outcome[]
Boomstick: Politicians really do have a tight grip on what they want.
Wiz: With both our combatants being their series residential powerhouses, this really did feel like a real trial of perseverance, especially with how Doomfist could refill his armour levels with direct attacks and how Armstrong's nanomachines ran on a limited charge.
Boomstick: So the biggest theme of this battle was who could whittle down the other first in time for a killing blow. And unfortunately for Doomfist, Armstrong pretty much had his number.
Wiz: Even giving Doomfist the benefit of the doubt and saying he could deliver enough power to completely destroy a building, Armstrong trumped him by having power that was 10 thousand times greater.
Boomstick: Just to clarify, it was 120 kilotons to just 11 tons, so pretty clear cut.
Wiz: As for speed, whilst Doomfist did dodge a weapon that is said to be theoretically capable of firing light speed projectiles, the consistency of Winston's own weapon varies between gameplay and cinematic.
Boomstick: For one thing, unlike in gameplay, the electricity didn't seek out Doomfist in spite of being in close proximity to him whilst it does so in gameplay, meaning we couldn't for sure say it was a scientifically accurate Tesla Cannon. So, unfortunately, Doomfist couldn't be said to be as fast as light speed, only bullet timer at best considering he fought Tracer and Genji. Meanwhile, Armstrong is somewhat in the same area as Raiden, who can move at sub-relativistic speeds. Much faster than a bullet.
Wiz: Indeed. Whilst Doomfist is the only one out of the two to have practiced legitimate martial arts, that alone wouldn't have circumvented the gap in strength and speed. Not to mention that Armstrong's nanomachines also have him plenty of other ways to combat Doomfist. He could send out shockwaves or levitate projectiles as a long-ranged strategy to counter Doomfist's more short ranged Hand Cannon and could possibly have even drained Doomfist's arm of its energy, rendering him helpless and himself with a little extra juice.
Boomstick: And even after that, considering that Raiden needed a top notch HF Blade to even hurt the guy, Doomfist was in even more of a pickle. Armstrong was right; you simply don't fuck with this senator.
Wiz: Doomfist was a deadly adversary to Overwatch, but to Armstrong, fell prey to the strength, speed, durability and powers given by his nanomachines.
Boomstick: He got Armstronged, arm over fist.
Wiz: The winner is Senator Armstrong.

Trivia[]
- Connections: Both are video game antagonists known for their overwhelming physical strength and close-quarters combat due to their augmented bodies; nanomachines and cyborg enhancement, respectively. Both also have a belief in survival of the fittest and are parts of terrorist organisations (Desperado/World Marshall and Talon, respectively). Coincidentally, they have fought similarly themed opponents; ninja cyborgs (Raiden and Genji), intelligent animals (Blade Wolf and Winston) and cocky speedsters (Jetstream Sam and Tracer). Both also used to participate in certain sports (football and martial arts, respectively) and wanted to strengthen the people of certain countries; America and Numbani, respectively. Both were also responsible for inspiring cybernetic heroes (Armstrong motivated Raiden to fight his personal battles and Doomfist engineered the creation of Orisa by Efi).
- Animation Style: 3D.
- OST Idea: 'Doomed against Strength', which is based on both their names and how they have a survival of the fittest mentality.
