History[]

The extent of Chancellor Ardyn Izunia is shrouded in mystery, so much so that not the recent Kings of Lucis, not even Noctis himself, has known. To the public eye, he is the outgoing, playful and jovial Chancellor of the Niflheim Empire, granted virtual access to all of resources from the Empire, courtesy of the ailling Emperor Aldercapt himself. In reality, Ardyn Lucis Caelum is the ostracized savior who was casted out of favor from the apathetic gods after being afflicted by the Starscourge, a dark power known to create Daemons of terrifying powers and sizes. Once destined as a healer and a savior of his people, Ardyn was ousted from his destiny from his jealous brother Somnus, Ardyn has been locked away for 2000 years, forgotten in Lucian history and being generally referred to as Adagium, a monster of untold power via the Starscourge. After being freed by Niflheim forces and having subjugated Ifrit, the Infernian to daemonization, Ardyn succumbs to his madness after realizing the extent of Somnus' betrayal and the death of his beloved, Aera Mirius Fleuret. He then agrees to help Niflheim by contributing to their upcoming Magitek technology and weaponized daemons for the Empire with help from the manical scientist Verstael Besithia. Ardyn has since plotted his revenge against the bloodline he is related to and the Gods who have casted him out for the darkness they disdained. Disguised as deceased officer Mars Sapientia, Ardyn infiltrates Founder's Day, the very day his brother Somnus founded the Kingdom of Lucis, to his disgust. He eventually ruins the celebration by unleashing Ifrit on the unsuspecting city of Insomnia, the Lucian capital, fighting through many of Lucis' elite soldiers, and ancient Guardians, weakening Lucis' defenses amplifying the Wall, even reaching to defeat Regis Lucis Caelum, the (by then) current King of Lucis.

But Ardyn's revenge is far from complete, and it drew out the soul of his hated brother, Somnus. Eventually, Ardyn prevails over Somnus, who has been driven with guilt and regret for his misdeeds even in death. Confused and outraged that Somnus asks for his understanding, the latter fades away, accepting his loss to his brother. Angered, Ardyn attempts to kill the downed Regis, but Bahamut, the Bladekeeper, stops him, and tells him of his foretold demise at the hands of Noctis. Whether Ardyn submits and falls into despair, or resists his fate and being tortured to submit, it does not change the fate the very gods he has since hated, created for him because in the end he will have his vengeance fulfilled. To this extent, Ardyn waited for decades until Noctis was of age, and has plotted to bring the boy king down. Although he has helped the boy in occasion, he has proven his true colors to become the very enemy Noctis was destined to defeat, he has caused the invasion of Altissia, the separation of Prompto from Noctis' group, and eventually, the latter's entrance into the Crystal though not before he reveals what he really is. He eventually succeeded, causing the world of Eos to fall to darkness for 10 years. The adult Noctis reunites with his group and encounters Ardyn to battle one last time, and succeeds into killing him, but Ardyn, as immortal as he was, could not even be killed by the power of the Kings of Lucis. In The Dawn of the Future novel, Ardyn still lives, apparently gone nihilistic. When Lunafreya Nox Fleuret discovers about the truth of his history and her ancestor Aera and confronted Ardyn for an alliance against Bahamut, the latter orders Ifrit to attack her out of anger when she mentions Aera, but Luna purges the Starscourge from Ifrit and forges a covenant with Ardyn, causing her to turn to a Daemon. Eventually, Ardyn eventually helps Noctis bring down Bahamut, who has revealed to be wanting to destroy Eos to achieve his ultimate form, Teraflare. As the Astrals fade away after a sacrifice that destroys Bahamut himself, Ardyn himself fades away from existence, with a smile on his face after being assured from Aera that he will be remembered. He is ultimately recognized as the Founder King by Noctis at his funeral.
