History[]

Accelerator was born with incredibly potent abilities as an esper in Academy City. Enrolled in the Power Curriculum Program, Accelerator's potential was quickly uncovered and the child was brought to the Special Ability Institute. Here, Accelerator would stay until he turned nine-years old. Even as a child, Accelerator struggled to fit in with others, due to the volatile nature of his powers, which were still developing. More than anything, he hated being unable to stop people from trying to surpass his powers, which always ended up injuring them. 

At ten years old, Accelerator faced off against the entirety of Academy City's military forces. It is unknown what escalated the situation, but Accelerator would back down and further reject human interaction. It wouldn't be until Kihara Amata came to train Accelerator in understanding and controlling his powers, that Accelerator finally began to look up to someone. So much so, in fact, that Accelerator adopted his mentor's crude language and general attitude, which would go on to further define how he viewed himself.

Some time later, Academy City's leading scientist Kihara Gensei would propose an experimental undertaking to create the first and only Level 6 esper. He chose Accelerator as the candidate for ascension, and supplied Accelerator with an army of 20,000 clones of Misaka Mikoto. In order to 'power up', Accelerator would begin murdering more than half the clones, believing that they lacked sentience or a soul. In truth, Accelerator wanted to become powerful so that no one would ever think of trying to confront him again, as he had lived his entire life dealing with people injuring or killing themselves on his powers. He also hoped that the Misaka Clones would display some form of regret or fear, to prove that they were human. However, until Misaka Mikoto herself stepped in, the Sisters had no sense of value for their self-worth, and would continue being slaughtered by Accelerator until Mikoto and Kamijou Touma intervened, defeating him.

Accelerator's humiliating defeat at Kamijou's hands shook him to his core, forcing him to re-evaluate himself. As fate would have it, the Misaka Network was spearheaded by a young girl named Last Order, and Accelerator found himself on a crash-course with forces that sought to kidnap her and use her to revitalize the experiments he had enacted. Accelerator chose to protect Last Order, and even sacrificed himself in order to save her. As a result, Accelerator ended up taking a bullet to the head while combating a virus from Last Order's body, and was crippled. 

After recovering from his injury, Accelerator learned that he could no longer speak, walk or calculate like he used to. Heaven Cancellor, the notorious doctor in the city, equipped Accelerator with a choker that connected Accelerator to the Misaka Network, who would now calculate and provide support for Accelerator's motor functions from afar. With his calculating ability half of what it used to be, Accelerator found himself far weaker than he once was, but ultimately decided to continute protecting Last Order. As a result, the once genocidal maniac slowly but surely turned to the light, taking cues from Touma to become a full-fledged hero. However, Accelerator's self worth is still incredibly low, and he refuses to ever touch another Misaka clone again.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Accelerator - Accelerator's ability is based on Vector Transformation. In short, he has the ability to control vectors (magnitude and direction) and influence objects that have vectors such as bullets, heat, and electricity. 'Accelerator' is both passive and active in usage, being constantly applied to Accelerator himself to block out sound, sunlight, and other vector-based properties. This ability requires a great amount of calculating power from Accelerator, forcing him to take into account every vector he intends to manipulate, as well as any outside factors, such as wind turbulance, oxygen, heat, moisture, air density, etc. 
  • Redirection - While Accelerator can create vectors, his most common application of his power is Redirection. As Accelerator can apply this ability passively, without being conscious of it, he always has it active at any given time. With Vector Redirection, Accelerator can pick and choose which vectors interact with his being. For example, he can block out the sun's rays or sound if he doesn't feel like hearing or feeling them. In combat, Accelerator can calculate the vectors of any attacks coming his direction and change their direction and magnitude. In essence, Accelerator can break down the very scientific makeup of energy and physical bodies to completely change how they interact with the world. Shooting a bullet at Accelerator would result in the bullet tracing its' trajectory perfectly back to whence it came, either at the exact same speed it was fired or even faster, depending on Accelerator's intent. Normal attacks, such as energy blasts, physical blows, and the like are incredibly common and Accelerator can redirect these passively. For more complex attacks, such as Dark Matter that literally does not exist, or Magic, which do not follow the typical scientific laws, Accelerator must analyze their structure and properties before he can manipulate their vectors. 
  • Energy Manipulation and Creation - By controlling vectors available to him, Accelerator can create plasma storms, wield electricity, effortlessly send out massive shockwaves, and more. Essentially, he is only limited by what he can calculate and what is available to him at any given moment.
  • Vector Amping - Accelerator can drastically amp the speed (magnitude) of objects in his vicinity. He can kick small pebbles fast enough that they become beams of light, and he can amplify himself to superhuman levels of strength.
  • Flight - Accelerator can manipulate the direction of the wind to create twin, condensed tornadoes on his back that allow him to fly anywhere he wishes.
  • Gravity Control - Accelerator can also bypass Earth's gravity if he so pleased. He has been shown to suspend himself in the middle of the air freely, implying he is constantly allowing himself to be held down by gravity, not the other way around.
  • Bodily Control - By controlling the vectors in a person's body, Accelerator can tamper with bioelectricty, paralyzing someone instantly, manipulating their brainwaves, or even redirecting the flow of their blood to kill them.

Black Wings[]

After being defeated by his former mentor, Kihara, Accelerator somehow managed to lift himself out of his vegetative state through sheer willpower alone, sprouting black tornado 'wings' from his back. Despite the Choker being defunct at this point, Accelerator could use his powers without the aid of the Misaka Network. The Black Wings were the first step in Accelerator's additional forms, and would later show up again in his fight against Kakine.  In the Black Wings state, Accelerator is typically bloodlusted due to extreme trauma or rage, causing him to go berserk. In this mode, he does not require his Choker to function at all. In fact, he no longer requires physical contact to manipulate Vectors, and can even understand laws he otherwise has no way of knowing about.

White Wings[]

Similar to the Black Wings, the White Wings formed after Accelerator found some form of peace in protecting Last Order from Fiamma of the Right. In this form, Accelerator is mostly just a more powerful version of the Black Wings, but instead of being crazed and berserk, is fully in control of himself.

Equipment[]

  • Electrode Choker - After being shot in the head, Accelerator could no longer use his motor functions normally, and required an electrode choker, powered by the Misaka Network, to perform basic functions. The Nework calculates for him, but is only capable of matching half of his previous calculation ability. Still, even with this handicap, Accelerator could calculate matter that previously did not exist in the universe, and is more or less capable of the same things, just requiring greater effort.
  • Cane - Accelerator carried a cane around that doubled as a weapon, but he no longer needs it.

Feats[]

  • Created a plasma storm that could have covered the entire planet
  • Kicked a small piece of rubble, accelerating it fast enough to become an energy beam. Upon colliding with Kakine's own energy blast, the shockwaves were powerful enough to shatter windows and blow away entire cars.
  • Learned how to control Dark Matter, which is literally matter that does not exist.
  • With a simple touch, Accelerator can kill any human being. By reversing the flow of blood, Accelerator can blow people up from the inside with a single physical contact, such as when he did this to Misaka 10031.
  • Took the energy of the Earth's rotation and used it to throw a building at Aleister.  In the anime, this is not conveyed at all, but the source material, the Index Light Novel, explicitly states: "In that instant, the earth's rotation on September 30 slows down by about 5 minutes. His arm, having took away the enormous energy of the planet's rotation, converts it via vector control into a single demonic attack." - Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 13, Page 132. 
  • Can casually 'turn off' sound and sunlight if he doesn't feel like interacting with them.
  • With a single stomp, Accelerator can manipulate the earth to create a massive ravine. Theoretically, according to his vector limitations, his only limit in feats like this are how much he wants and how many vectors he needs to calculate. 
  • Another example of how Accelerator can casually apply his vector control to achieve whatever it is he desires.
  • Can control bioelectricity with a touch. How far he goes with this is, again, entirely up to his discretion.
  • Casually unharmed by "4,000 degrees". Considering the author is Japanese, he likely is referring to celsius. Converting to kelvin, it would come out to 4273.15 K, which isn't quite the surface of the sun (5,778 K).
  • However, his aforementioned Plasma Storm could reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees celsius, which would come out to more than 10,000 degrees kelvin, twice the temperature of the surface of the sun.
  • Accelerator's plasma storm being ten thousand degrees celsius: "Compressing the air created heat. Internal combustion engines used that fact. By compressing the city’s air with a ridiculous compression ratio, it had turned into a mass of heat exceeding 10,000 degrees Celsius. This forcibly caused the atoms in the nearby air to split into cations and electrons which turned them to plasma." - Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 3, Chapter 4
  • Doesn't always need to dramatically slow the Earth's rotation to punch a skyscraper. He can do that casually too.
  • Accelerator can use his powers on himself to not just hit hard, but he can also literally hold himself together after taking fatal attacks. 
  • Even if he's unconscious, Accelerator can somehow use his powers on himself and others to halt potentially fatal wounds from escalating.
  • Contained a blast that was referred to as planetary in power. The energy released from Gabriel is planetary, according to the light novel source material: "If Misha tried to force out an output greater than the hypothesized amount, the physical body she was made of would explode emitting a massive amount of Telesma. It would be like a planet exploding at the North Pole.".
  • Accelerator confirmed containing the energy: "The angel of science threw the gargantuan energy inside it at Accelerator, who manipulated the vectors inside that energy into a transparent shield and threw it around the ball of energy. Like a shell, it encased the explosion which had already expanded to 300 meters. Inside the shell, the energy from the explosion built up as the expanding light was trapped, unable to unleash its wrath on the land. It seemed impossible, but the light and sound intensified even more. But Accelerator did not give up, and mustered all his strength, strengthening the barrier around the giant orb of light. For several seconds, the mass of energy was contained inside the shell." - Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 21 Chapter 8
  • Accelerator's shields can casually reflect lightspeed attacks from Misaka Mikoto . According to the source material, "That distance was too great for Kamijou to reach her in one step, but it was well within the range of Mikoto’s electrical attacks that moved at the speed of light." - Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 3, Chapter 3.
  • Accelerator reflecting these attacks from Misaka 10031, whose attacks are also lightspeed: "She released a lightning spear from it. The spear of purple electricity moved forward at the speed of light and held enough destructive force to knock someone unconscious. She did not think that it would act as a fatal blow. As long as it distracted him long enough for her to get away, that was enough. However, the lightning spear she had fired at the boy rebounded and struck her in her own chest. “Gah…!?” The girl was knocked back to the ground with a shock that felt like she had been struck in the chest with a hammer. Her breathing stopped and every muscle in her body moved irregularly. The girl’s trembling lips managed to put together a single word. “Re…flection…!?” “Sorry, that’s not entirely wrong, but it still doesn’t get to the essence of what I can do!” - Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 3, Chapter 2
  • Accelerator can ordinarly reflect UV rays,] which move at the speed of light. In that panel, Kakine is mixing Dark Matter into the UV rays, hence why he is being harmed. As Kakine later explains, he was manipulating things Accelerator normally lets through his reflection. After the sunlight is weaponized, Accelerator adapts and begins reflecting it. 
  • Accelerator could remove gravity from himself or others if he felt like it. According to the source material: "The redirection ability could be done unconsciously through some simple calculations. He just needed to calculate the minimum required forces (gravity, air pressure, light, oxygen, heat, sound wavelength, etc.) and redirect everything else. If he really redirected all forces, he would be tossed out of the atmosphere because gravity was redirected." - Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 5 Chapter 1
  • An example of Accelerator's immense intelligence. He figured he could use his control of vectors to override Last Order's electrical signals in her brain to combat a complex virus that had been uploaded into her. With just one glance at the virus data, he was able to memorize the code and interpret bioelectricity as binary code. Then, comparing the differences in binary, was able to easily alter the bioelectricity to remove the virus.
  • After being defeated by Kihara, Accelerator somehow managed to stand up and keep fighting despite his Choker being depleted of energy. Accelerator's Black Wings allowed him to use his powers without the calculations of the Misaka Network or his own abilities. In this form, he vaporized Kihara and brutally murdered Kakine. 
  • Took a continential blast from Fiamma with the White Wings. According to the source material: "A tremendous shock shook the Star of Bethlehem. The golden light had exploded. "Accelerator moved his white wings even more and his speed of ascent shot up. With no tricks up his sleeve, he headed straight for the falling golden mass. There was a slight smile on his lips...." it further states, "But a great disaster did not assault the earth as Fiamma of the Right had expected. Nor was the earth dyed gold like the heavens. The great amount of Telesma that was fired down from the Star of Bethlehem was obstructed by something [Accelerator]" - Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 22 Chapter 12
  • Proof of Fiamma's attack being continential: " '…I should be able to sink an entire continent into the ocean with a single wave of my right arm. I should be able to dry up all the water in the oceans with a single strike!! You were nothing more than an adapter connected to that right arm until the designated time. You were nothing more than a potato shoot that is to be returned to the earth after the potato is collected!!' " - Toaru Majutsu no Index Volume 22, Chapter 11

Faults and Weaknesses[]

  • Accelerator's Choker/The Misaka Network. If his Choker runs out of battery or the Misaka Network is compromised, Accelerator will enter a vegetative state and be unable to fight. However, he apparently has safeguards to protect himself even when unconscious, and the Black Wings do not require his choker to be active for them to revitalize him.
  • Accelerator has no defense against power negation. Kamijou Touma's Imagine Breaker utterly humiliated Accelerator in all of their fights.
  • Lack of Oxygen. According to Accelerator, he could easily survive a nuke falling on him, but would die from the lack of oxygen. Later forms of Accelerator are possibly powerful enough to simply make oxygen from other sources, if need be, and Accelerator early on figured a counter to the nuke problem by simply carrying a bottle of oxygen the size of a hairspray can.
  • Pulling your punches. By pulling your attack away the instant before it comes in contact with Accelerator's AIM field, you can bypass his calculations and land the blow on him. HOWEVER this is NOT easy to achieve, as only one person in the entire Index Universe has ever successfully pulled this off, and that person was Kihara, who literally developed Accelerator's powers for a decade. Other people have tried to replicate his techniques and failed miserably. 
  • Dark Matter/Magic. While Accelerator can adapt to such attacks, anything that defies physics or is undefined by existing laws will give him trouble until he can apply new laws to them.
  • Physics-defying attacks. Anything that targets the spirit, soul, operates on a conceptual level, etc. Accelerator has no defense against such attacks and cannot adapt to these like he can Dark Matter or magic.
  • Anything that doesn't have vectors. Similar to the above, if something somehow straight up does not have any vectors at all, Accelerator cannot reflect or defend against them. 
  • Accelerator is a genius, easily capable of outpacing a supercomputer before his injury. However, Accelerator's mental state is not perfect, and he carries immense guilt over his murder of the Misaka Clones. Should this trauma be brought up, such as when Misaka Worst tormented him over his actions, Accelerator is prone to losing control of himself and flying into a berserker rage. He has similarly gone into blind rages when Last Order or his other few pillars of support are threatened.
